Updated March 2022, Reset Mac OSX password using Single User Mode
- First you need to enter Single User Mode. Reboot the Mac and hold down Command+S at boot to enter into the command line.
- Run "fsck -fy"
- Run "mount -uw /"
- Run "passwd username"
KEEP IN MIND, "username" is the username of the account.
To find out, you can change directory to Users "cd users" then use ls to check the the files in the directory "ls -l"

If you want to maintain the previous keychain for migrating to a new machine, can you simply choose that after changing the pw?

Does the account have to be the admin for this to work? I tried this, but my account is not the admin since it is a work computer and it gave me an error code and did not work.

Turning on your mac using cmd + r
Then enter utilities > terminal `< type "resetpassword" command > enter a new password, and you're good
You don't need to use single user mode to reset an admin user password on intel based Mac devices

MacOS is built off of the FreeBSD kernel, so it has lots of Unix leftovers such as the root user, single user mode, and even a linux-like directory structure. MacOS has built several protection measures to protect the kernel, but the kernel itself remains relatively unchanged. MacOS is linux pretty much!

Try cd /usr if that doesn't work maybe it's a different os than what I made this video on and try

@@jlizzotte04 no editing was done. It’s was like a stream of consciousness. As opposed to a well thought out and structured training video. Obviously TH-cam has no rules and this is allowed. But why not present the highest quality video possible? Use on-screen text overlay to clearly show the commands you’re typing instead of making us squint at lines of code at the bottom. In fact, you could exclusively frame just the window with the commands. And do a run through in advance do you don’t film errors.
