SPIRIT’s ‘Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus’ is an often overlooked classic album.
    Production is lush for 1970…

Fresh Garbage what an awesome song! I met them around 1994, Randy California, super mellow dude, underrated guitar God. RIP.

"Twelve Dreams..." was not overlooked in it's day. While it wasn't a top seller, it was lauded by the critics and a favorite among college students. And "Nature's Way" got lots of airplay. I adored it. It was their best LP.

I'd say that all Spirits albums are overlooked...songs like "mechanical world", "Fresh Garbage", "Dream Within A Dream", "Aren't You Glad", "Give A Life Take A Life" & the crushing "Dark Eyed Woman" are all excellent classic songs.

Thank you, Patrick! Kidney Bingos is such a fun one! I'm so thankful for the records you have sent my way the last few years. I've gotten so much enjoyment from them and I don't care about the covers as long as the vinyl is perfect, which it is! 😉 Glad you were able to find those Throwing Muses singles! Sure would love to find their debut on vinyl. I almost had a chance when one of my local stores did a flip video and it was there, but it was snatched up before I could get it.

Hi Hanna! Nice selection of records. I noticed Iggy Pop's "New Values" on display behind you. I think that's very definitely an overlooked record. I had a friend who played me The Idiot when it came out. I liked it enough, but a little later it was the more radio-friendly tracks from New Values that really made 16 -year-old me an Iggy fan, and also really opened the door to other "outside the mainstream" bands. I think it doesn't get nearly as much love as the Bowie assisted records. Wire's 70s releases are rightly in the pantheon, but I really dig their 80s output, too. Keep rockin'! \m/

    • @TheOmahaIntrovert
      @TheOmahaIntrovert  ปีที่แล้ว

David + David's Welcome to the Boomtown is my favorite album of the 1980s. It wasn't really popular, but they went on to collaborate with Sheryl Crow on Tuesday Night Music Club.

I listened to some of the Blind Mr. Jones. As you described, excellent flute interwoven in some good rockin 80s guitars. There was a Jethro Tull - Benefit album sound to the flute mix. Still, Blind Mr. Jones is unique and wonderful as a listening experience. Thanks! Keep making more videos; you're good at this. You dig deep, and you are not afraid of the outlier recording artists.

TRUST is one of my favorite Costello albums, and I agree on HONEY'S DEAD and BOOK OF DAYS.

  • @stephenmunson1426
    @stephenmunson1426 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I sat in on the rehearsals and writing for some of the Mesh & Lace album and thought they were speaking and playing a foreign language. It was revolutionary to me at the time. I then went out and formed my own band. Was lucky enough to be at the recording of After The Snow which was exceptional but Mesh and Lace will always have a special place in my heart. The opening bass line of Gathering Dust is still the greatest intro to any song ever. Nice one, Reg.

Hey Hanna, totally agree about the Wire, in fact it may be my favourite of their albums. I love The Queen of Ur and the King of Um. I think Elvis Costello thought the sessions of Trust were too congested and confused and full of substance abuse, with New Lace Shoes being a brief moment of clarity, but I agree it deserves place among his best. It's an interesting subject; I realise that your channel is one of the few places where my favourite bands are discussed at all. Most of my favourite albums are under the 'undeservedly neglected' banner.

Hey there, Mike! Ah, interesting to read that A Bell is a Cup may be your favorite Wire LP! Don't hear that too often! Seems you appreciate the underdog bands like me. Hope you continue to hang around here. Agreed that it is a bit difficult to find other channels in this community who discuss post punk, alternative, etc. Love to gush about these groups whenever I can! Cheers!

I had the pleasure of seeing Modern English play all of Mesh & Lace live a few years ago..it was killer! I’m glad the Furs still play Book of Days songs in their set from time to time. Great choices Hanna! My #1 overlooked album is the one and only LP by Goya Dress called Rooms which came out in the UK on the Nude label in 1996. It was produced by John Cale and the Brodsky Quartet (who have worked with Elvis Costello) guested on it. Despite all the resources thrown at them the album just got completely ignored and never got a US release and the band soon broke up. Lead singer and songwriter Astrid Williamson went on to a solo career and the bass player and drummer (Terry de Castro and Simon Pearson) went on to work with The Wedding Present and Cinerama. Just an amazing album and maybe the most buried treasure of the 90s. Thankfully everything they recorded has been posted on TH-cam.

I am guilty of only owning No Other by Gene Clark (I recorded a cover of 'Silver Raven' on my channel). I look forward to checking out the one you mentioned and even more of his solo stuff. I bought that Furs album when it came out and I thought it was a nice return to form after the big mess of Midnight To Midnight. "Away" by the Feelies is one of my favorite songs ever. A Bell Is A Cup is soooo underrated! I bought it when it came out for 'Kidney Bingos' but I love the whole record. And I love to see my favorite Pete Townshend album on display (talk about underrated!) Great job, Hanna.

Elvis Costello to me had one of the greatest 6 year runs in music history. Trust is masterful and I’ve given it away more than any album Costello I’ve owned.

I started collecting Furs' albums from the beginning, but when they released Mirror Moves, I felt they made the 'great leap forward' in part to the superb production work of Keith Forsey. Also, the final track on the Rundgren produced Talk x 3 entitled All Of This And Nothing is one of the most haunting pieces ever written and soldified me as a fan. I fell off the fan wagon with Midnight, even though there are a couple of good tracks. Saw them in Napa, CA about ten years ago.

Hi Hanna 🎸 ! - Definitely agree that Psychedelic Furs made an excellent return to form with Book Of Days after the mediocre formulatic Midnight To Midnight. Nice to see Gene Clark get some love ! A brilliant writer. That Wire & The Ideal Copy were a welcome return in the late 80's. Both the 20/20 & Slowdive on the wall deserved much more success then they initially received. I like Stella's channel .. she has really good taste. Hope people check out the excellent 1981 album Dreamtime by the now sadly departed Tom Verlaine. My favorite guitarist. ✌️

The Finest Drops is an excellent song on the Wire album. Also, there is a reason that all other albums by Modern English are forgotten about. After the Snow is a perfect album. It is definitely in my top all time favorites list. Everyone knows I Melt with You, but the rest of the songs on it are excellent as well. One of my forgotten albums would definitely be Depeche Mode's 101. Everyone usually goes on and on about their studio albums, but I consider 101 one of the best live albums ever recorded. You should do a top 10 Live albums for one of your updates. We all know what #1 is going to be, and it is definitely one of my favorites also.

The Redskins - ‘Neither Washington Nor Moscow’ (soul influenced punky tunes), early Simple Minds albums are a revelation….a million miles from The Breakfast Club sound. Just found your channel and was sucked in by your Jesus & Mary Chain shirt. Stoked that you feel the same way about Honey's Dead as I do. So many great songs on that one, and the production on it rules. I'll have to revisit the Furs' Book of Days, as I wasn't blown away by that one, but loved their next album World Outside, which I feel is the most underrated of theirs. A band I love that gets little to no love here in the US is Cardiacs, making all their stuff underrated in my mind. haha! A few others I feel get passed over a bit are Cocteau Twins' Victorialand, Devo's Oh No! It's Devo, 7 Seconds' New Wind AND Soulforce Revolution, and Oingo Boingo's Boi-Ngo.

We have similar tastes in music. Funny stuff to share. I was recently rear ended on a fwy while listening to that Gene Clark record. I remember seeing JAMC for the Honey's Dead tour with Curve and Spiritualized and also being in my friends car when he got a DUI while blasting HD's opening track "I wanna..." Irresponsible teenage stuff! I remember digging that Blind Mr. Jones CD. I think it was produced by Neil Halstead of Slowdive. Speaking of which, I also remember lending Neil a Roland JC 120 amp to during Slowdive's self financed Souvlaki tour. I've accumulated a lot of useless memories. LOL

Great stuff Hanna. Honey's Dead definitely belongs. My favorite is Automatic which could also qualify. Love A Bell is a Cup and their "companion" album The Ideal Copy. Other "spontaneous" picks include: Sparklehorse It's a Wonderful Life, ANYTHING by The Billy Nayer Show, most notably Goodnight Straplight Sarentino, Abecedarians Eureka, (reissue) Nina Nastasia Dogs, Wall of Voodoo Seven Days in Sammystown (post Ridgway) Kid Dakota Listen To the Crows as they Take Flight, Television Adventure, Blancmange Happy Families, Pugwash The Olympus Sound, and Fish Karma The Theory of Intelligent Design. Great video Hanna. I am going to spin my Trust album now. Here are some albums I think don't get their proper due:
Garth Brooks - Chris Gaines Greatest Hits. Sure it is completely out of left field, but the songs are really good!
Damn Yankees - Don't Tread. Everybody loves their debut for good reasons, but this album smokes the debut.
AC/DC - Blow Up Your Video. Production issues aside, this album is awesome.
Eric Clapton - Behind the Sun. People complain about the Phil Collins influence on the album, but I think Phil breathed new life in the Clapton with the trilogy of albums they did. Some great work on this one.
Counting Crows - Hard Candy. This is the album that brought me back into the Counting Crows fan base. I saw them live on this tour and they were great. Awesome album
Hootie and the Blowfish - Fairweather Johnson. Like most, I brushed this album off when it was first released. Over time it has become my go to album for them.
The Offspring - Splinter. I think this album is awesome. The song "Spare Me the Details" is a favorite.
The Refreshments - The Bottle & Fresh Horses. Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy is a classic, but this album is just as good. "Preacher's Daughter", "Fonder and Blonder", and "Heaven or the Highway Out of Town" are highlights.
There are a few of many I could come up with. Rock on Hanna!

Wire got more UK media attention in the late 80s than late 70s. Interviews and videos on several TV shows. It was on the back of an outbreak of "10th Anniversary of Punk" nostalgia. Their reputation had grown, Pink Flag especially had ascended to classic status. Plus the REM cover of Strange added to the interest.
On the subject of flute - the first indie band I heard using a flute was Look Blue Go Purple. All-girl NZ group who were briefly brilliant in the mid 80s. Three EPs on Flying Nun, then went their separate ways.

That Television album in the background certainly qualifies as an underrated album. Adventure had the misfortune of coming out after the by now sainted Marquee Moon. Had it been their first album, it probably would have been seen as a promising start by a new band with an intriguing approach to songwriting. But maybe it makes sense that it came out after, because structurally it has a certain sense of rhythmic economy that to my sacred ears alludes to UK post-punk rather than the structured jams of Marquee Moon. It was also the first Television album I bought. But Marquee Moon was really where I got what they were doing.

    • @RebelScum312
      @RebelScum312 ปีที่แล้ว

as much as marquee moon deserves the adoration, i think glory is the best television song & my favorite with all the layers of suggestive, enigmatic & poetic imagery & guitar lines & rhythms, & there's also the sublime cover by lloyd cole & the commotions

I had an opportunity to meet Gene Clark back in the early 1990s. He was performing a concert in a small hotel bar of all things. He was very late to the gig and when he did show up he looked disheveled and very strung out. Amazingly he performed well despite his condition. After the show I was talking to a musician who backed Gene up. He asked me if I'd like to go up to Gene's room to meet him. I had brought a couple of items for Gene to sign so I was excited at the opportunity. When we got to the room there were about a dozen people congregating and talking with Gene. Finally I had my moment with Gene and introduced myself and asked if he would sign my records. He could barely hold the pen and I literally had to guide his hand down to the album jacket for him to sign. It was rather heartbreaking. A couple of months later Gene passed away. It was sad but based on my recent experience meeting Gene it was not surprising. Gene was a great talent who lived a hard life of substance abuse.

    Hi Hanna,
Interesting list. It's amazing how many records don't get the praise they should. One of my favs that fits in the category is Captain Beyond's self titled from 1972. You might check it out.
You asked about a cartridge upgrade and mentioned Ortofon. Hard to go wrong there. The 2M Red gets all the love because it's cheap. But step up to the 2M Blue (in your budget) or Bronze (slightly out of your budget) if you can. But there are other brands too that perform well in that price range. Just do a little research.

I too love the pre-hit Modern English, and Trust -- "Clubland," "Lovers' Walk," "Strict Time," "Watch Your Step." Dino Jr. Need to revisit the early Gene Clark, and Blind Mr. Jones is new to me! Crazy Rhythms is definitely a different, more driving approach that perhaps stands out in the context of what a massive influence they were. I was so excited for Only Life when it came out, but it's jangle pop was kind of samey so I burned out on it for many years. I've come back around to it since, and love all their albums, though don't give up on Crazy Rhythms!
I'm currently counting down albums from 1983 and thought of you, as there's lots of post-punk like Go-Betweens, Sad Lovers & Giants - Feeding the Flame, which I know you're aware of. Have you heard Opposition - Intimacy, as well as their 1981 album Breaking the Silence? Up there with Modern Eon and Comsat Angels for me!

Hey again! Blind Mr. Jones - Stereo Musicale is such an incredible listen! Hope you like it! I haven't given up on Crazy Rhythms. it's just not my favorite. 😉
Very cool you are working on a 1983 albums list! Also the year I was born! I have not heard Opposition but I'm definitely intrigued. You know I love my post punk from that era. Thanks, I'll check 'em out! You've never steered me wrong before! ☺️

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Ya, I'm doing that whole round number anniversary thing, did 1973 last month. Which means you have a big b-day coming up! Listened to Blind Mr. Jones, dig it, thanks!
Not published but here's a sneak peak at my Opposition - Intimacy (1983) blurb:
Opposition are responsible numerous lost post-punk classics, starting with Breaking The Silence (1981). Formed in London’s southern suburbs in 1978, their 1980 single “This Year” was influenced by ska/reggae through the lens of 2-Tone and the Ruts. Sessions from that period were issued as Lost Songs in 2005. That lineup broke up and they re-formed as a trio with Marcus Bell, taking on a darker post-punk direction. Opposition could easily be credited for being the architects of the shimmering guitar sounds later employed by The Chameleons, had anyone actually noticed them. A listen to “Breaking The Silence” and “Very Little Glory” will leave no doubts that they were trailblazers, and the later cuts like “In My Eyes” display their angry power. Their greatness was recognized by at least one industry executive, as they were signed to Charisma records and released a string of consistently great albums - Intimacy (1983), Promises (1984) and Empire Days (1985).

I have no idea what you are talking about for most of this video but well presented. I love Elvis Costello, I’ve heard of Modern English because of I Melt With You, but I’ve not heard of most of these other bands and never heard the term shoegaze before

A really interesting video, many thanks. I bought Trust when it came out and didn't like it as much as his first 4 albums, but I just listened again today (for the first time in 42 years!) and it sounded better - maybe it will grow on me. Tanx is fantastic, and I reckon as good as Slider and Electric Warrior. Listened to that Modern English album and it's fantastic, I'd never heard of it before. I don't know how well you know Graham Parker & the Rumour, a generally overlooked artist who I think is brilliant, his first two albums are acknowledged classics, and his fourth, Squeezing Out Sparks is usually considered his best, but his third and fifth, Stick to Me and Up Escalator are not generally considered as good , though to me both are also fantastic. I think the Comsat Angels' first album Waiting for a Miracle is a post-punk classic, but I rarely see it on lists of best post punk albums. A whole genre which is overlooked, imo, especially in America, is Reggae, except for Bob Marley of course, but there are so many fantastic Reggae albums which would be on my list of best albums, by bands such as Culture, The Congos, Burning Spear, etc. Thanks again.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this video. I really appreciate the comment. Yes, perhaps Trust will work its way into your heart and become a favorite in time! Glad I led you to check out this Modern English LP. It's brilliant indeed!
I just have Squeezing Out Sparks from Parker but I will certainly look those other 2 you mentioned. Thanks for that!
Check out my post punk videos where I feature and love Comsat Angels! Cheers!

Farm is probably the best produced Dinosaur Jr album. Love the guitar sounds on it. New to your channel... Easy sub. Keep it up!

Nice tips! I have a pretty huge music collection covering practically all genres and I can't say that I've given any of those 10 albums much of a chance. I love what you have on your NOW PLAYING display. The Buckingham Nicks album is one that I really loved as a kid ( was part of my mom's collection ). Definitely gonna check out the Jesus And Mary Chain, Gene Clark and Elvis Costello tips.

I have that Bangles album-New, sealed. I saw them at Purdue University on their Everything tour and Susanna Hoffs, low-fived me on her way to their bus. I'll never forget it, LOL. I have been a Bangles fan since and try to buy any of their vinyls I find. I dream of an autographed album that they signed to ME!

Where did you hear Blind Mr. Jones! There were probably 6-7 of us growing up in Lincoln who got into them. If I recall correctly that LP came out around the same time as the first 3 Verve singles. Also, yes that Feelies LP is just spectacular.

Great list, these are always fun. It's interesting to hear about why someone likes one thing over another and what makes those albums special to them. If I could be so bold as to reccomend a couple of things, check out Doubting Thomas, The Tear Garden and of course, everything from the Legendary Pink Dots. Thanks!

It’s fun watching someone much younger than me digging the LPs I love (and mostly own). One note, the first time I saw the Feelies in the mid-1980’s (Bottom Line?) I thought, wow, so this is what the Ramones would be if they were good musicians!.

Love all those albums you mentioned Hanna, a lot are underrated records. The Jesus and Mary Chain's Honey's Dead is my favorite from them, I like the DualDisc edition on CD/DVD from the mid 2000's. The Psychedelic Furs and Modern English are very underrated.
