  • I'm so ashamed of not having these albums that I love on vinyl. There are various reasons why, but really there's just no excuse!

Very brave and candid from you about these albums you do not have on vinyl. Not something to be ashamed whatsoever, I agree, there's nothing you "should" have but there's the albums you want to have. For me, all physical media is ok, not only vinyl but CDs and cassettes as well. Streaming is also ok for its convenience and easy access, although neither every song nor every pressing/version is available, but on the other hand the sheer amount of songs that's available is amazing if you think what we had in the '90s and early 2000s, before streaming was a thing. Thanks for another entertaining video!

In 1982, when I was 21, I was babysitting for a friend. He worked for Phonogram and had The Who box set Phases which was made in West Germany which he got from work. It includes all the classic Who albums, My Generation, A Quick One, Who Sell Out, Tommy, Live At Leeds, Who's Next, Quadrophenia, The Who By Numbers and Who Are You. He wasn't into The Who and he gave it to me. It is cut quite low but is clean and crisp, and it was free. I've just stuck Who's Next onto the turntable.

I’am on a quest to get the vinyl community’s attention on the English progressive band Family, who I saw back in the late 60’s70’s. I’ve recently realised that there music is worthy of some love and respect, as they were an excellent band that never got much traction in the U.S!

I'm impressed with Robert knowing his stuff with records and pressings.
I worked in records retailing in (US) the 1970s, and when Robert mentioned about "Band of the Run" Capitol pressings having some shortcomings, I recall very well how the Classical music fans cringed at the low quality LP pressings on the "Angel" label, which was the EMI/Capitol branch label for Classical music.
So, the claims of shortcomings with the LP pressings from Capitol in the 1970s is a valid one.

Robert lamenting about not having a particular Allman Brothers vinyl LP reminds me of the flood of Allman Brothers albums in the bargain bins [cut-outs] racks at Tower retailers in the late 1970s ~ early '80; as their record label, Capricorn Records, went out of business. With that, record distributors had inventory they had to unload, with retailers, such as Tower, selling those records for $1.99 ~ $2.99 (US), even for the double-albums.

  • @bloqk16

It's marvelous that Robert Fithen brought up the aspect about trading-in vinyl for CDs earlier in life.
A friend of mine did just that when The Rolling Stones was first released on CDs, as he was financially struggling at the time.
While he marveled at the clarity of the sound, there was something 'lacking,' too; so he went back to the used record store and, though it meant going into debt, bought-back the 'Stones vinyl LPs.

Heh! When you switched to outdoors, next to that big "tree" for THE WHO, I thought we were about to see a reenactment of the "Who's Next" album cover (supplant tree for monolith)
Okay, first off, I think it's only responsible to let you know that the 1996 MCA 180g "Who's Next" is, IMO, the best pressing. I get in-between the speaks with that one, and it's impossible for me to leave my Maxell chair (i.e. black leather recliner) until it's over! A sublime, yet powerful pressing.
As for DAVID BOWIE, well, that's my all time, life-long favorite artist, so I'm sure I'd have an extra STS for you. That said, I bought it with my allowance brand new in early '76 when I was just about 10, so the *black and white* cover is the one that seems right for me. And hey, when you think about it, taking the overt use of cocaine into account, the more white the better, right? I mean, as far as exuding the true essence of that iconic, great album.
The title track especially is a "white" song. The color LP jacket (although nice for sure) just doesn't fit. But again, I'm coming from a place of loving Bowie all the way back then, as it was happening. I have to speak from that honest, connected vantage point.
    - I almost bought that 1991 UK import LP of "Station To Station" back then (Ryko US stopped after "David Live at The Tower, Philadelphia" while the UK kept 'er going through "LOW,", I think it was - I just have all the RYKO US "sealed in a perforated clear bag" vinyl from '69-'74), plus promo posters, through to Heroes. Obviously have the original RCA LPs! Gotta have that original back cover art, the "MainMan" logo and most definitely the *US 1972 album covers* for "Space Oddity" and "The Man Who Sold The World" Those two Ziggy era covers embody those two albums soooooo much better than their "original Mercury counterparts"
Anyway, I've got most of the other great albums you mentioned on vinyl (though I still, and always will, go to bat for well mastered CDs) I love both. And I know I have an extra "Candy-O" on vinyl, but not sure about the debut. Might have a second one of those debuts with the ol' hype sticker in tow. I need to check.
*Oh, and before I go...right on about the original LP version of "Heart of Glass" 🥂
    Marc

@@RobertFithen Haha. Yeah, I don't think a reenactment would've been good, esp for the more impressionable TH-camrs out there.

Exile on Mainstreet was the very album that made me decide to get a record player about 11 years ago. I just woke up one day and said "I haven't actually heard exile as it is meant to be, with songs grouped in sides not just one long playlist". By the end of the day I had a turntable, amp, speakers, and 4 or 5 other of my favourites on vinyl too, such as the first big star, sweet baby james, and for the roses. Been hooked ever since, but thankfully kept most of my cds too.

It's good to hold onto the original releases on vinyl, as I've experienced some disappointing remixes that were done on CDs.
Example: Allman Brothers "Blue Skies." The original vinyl had the lead guitar prominently front-and-center doing its solo. The CD version of the same song, the lead guitar is now sharing the spotlight with the rhythm guitar; where the rhythm guitar is now diluting the prominence of the lead guitar solo.

We all have these lists. There are many essential rock albums I don't have because I never find clean enough copies. And yes, many Discogs sellers goof on getting the exact pressing right. I, on the other hand, obsess over it. (Gotta find the "P" for Columbia Pitman in those runouts, even if all Columbia plants used identical labels!) I did once get a clean Zep II RL for the price of a standard pressing on there, so I can't whine too much! You are right to wait on an Australian pressing of "(I'm) Stranded," by the way. I have a clean US original - it sounds dreadful. Muddy, muddy, muddy (and not in a charming "punk" way). And I LOVE that album, too.

The UK budget pressing on the Fame label of Parallel Lines has the original version of Heart Of Glass on it. I bought my copy back in December 1983. This was when budget pressings didn't mean lower quality. No Ronco, K-Tel or Warwick rubbish here.

I like the MoFi Cars version. I don't have any vertical swirl albums. I didn't even know what a vertical swirl was until I stated watching VC videos. I ordered the first pressing of the Cramps Songs The Lord Taught Us on discogs. The band name is white and the track listing is different. Of course, I got the more common version. I purged my Band On The Run and most of my other McCartney albums.

Just gotta make sure when you find the original LPs that all the doodads that came with the album are still in there. For example:
Band On the Run - poster
All the Women in the World Beware - hilarious two-panel poster showing the band as supermen with women chasing them. I think the poster was created by the fantasy cartoonist Frank Frazetta.
Live at Leeds - gatefold with a bunch of fascimiles of various Who artifacts (e.g. contracts, poster ads).
Early Elton John albums - came with booklets stapled into the gatefold sleeves.
The only original album(s) I'm interested in getting is the first one by the band "Them" on Parrot, with all the variations on the front cover (e.g. "Featuring Here Comes the Night", sticker pasted on album saying "Gloria Here Comes the Night", "The Original Hit Gloria").
