I've rarely clicked on a video and clicked "like" so quickly. You can *never* do enough videos on postpunk for me! I've really enjoyed all the videos you've made on that genre and I've discovered a lot of music from them, and expect to discover even more now. Thanks for all the great work you do on these!
Great video and nice to see you mentioned The Cabs (Cabaret Voltaire). I remember listening to them when I used to go to venues around Sheffield in the 1980's.
That is the first one I'm going to play tomorrow night and I cannot wait. I have a whole stack of vinyl lined up for the weekend and it will be a glorious time!
Thanks again for the shout out. Haven't heard all those artists but I'll check them out soon. I'm a big Cabaret Voltaire and Eyeless in Gaza fan. Keep the videos coming as you do such a good job. Cheers
Thanks again for the great titles, Mark! Really enjoying them! Glad you're a fan of the Cabs and Eyeless in Gaza, too! Solid bands. Hope you're having a great weekend!
Thank you so much for contributing your knowledge to us all! I have a massive catalog of music... but nobody can hear everything, so I really appreciate the suggestions... More than half of these bands remain unknown to me... so I have some work to do.. .My all-time favorite post-punk band is THE CHAMELEONS... who I think are criminally underrated. I know you know of them... but I always feel like they're just a secret when I see so many lists without their name appearing... Keep up the great work!!!
Greetings, John! Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed this video! Haha, you're right, there is too much music out there and nobody can hear it all. Such a vast art form! Dude, I so love the Chameleons, too! One of a kind band. Super underrated and I still don't know why that is. Such a shame. Till next time...cheers!
Oh and with Pere Ubu whom i just love, i have their 5CD box called "Datapanik In The Year Zero" which i found a coupla years ago & has their early stuff... fascinating band & of course Gang of Four...
I just spun Solid Gold by GoF this past week. Was great to revisit that one! I'll have to check out that Pere Ubu CD box set. Sounds interesting! Cheers!
Heyyyyyy! Thanks for the shoutout Hanna! That really was a mutually beneficial trade, and I’m happy you got to add the companion piece to your Contortions LP. Modern Eon sounds intriguing and love that band name. Love the passion that you have for the genre, and this is what the VC is all about for me. “Rad👍🏻👍🏻”🤣🤣
Hey Thomas! Look at me, I finally made it here! I'm really happy with our trade and what you sent my way! These pieces really enhanced my collection! Thank you again! Rad stuff indeed! 😁
Thanks for the video! All very good stuff. Asylum Party were an amazing band. Their best track, in my opinion, is Misfortune? on their 12" EP What Will You Learn. I highly recommend it if you don't know it already. To remain in France: the small output of Opera de Nuit is all fantastic. Hard to find these days unfortunately. Vinyls go for insane prices. I have a double CD that the band put out a few years ago with all their discography.
Another cracking video! I have 'Micro Phonies' on cd...it was marked down to 99p in our local Woolworths [R.I.P.] some years ago. I also bought the reissue of 'Rust Red September' a couple of years back...double lp on white vinyl AND it was only £10 brand new. A beautiful album. My mate lent me the original lp when it came out and I recorded it onto a cassette which I played until it practically wore out. Oh,and I also have The Cabs 'Groovy,Laidback & Nasty' lp + 12'' set. Keep up the great work!
Hi Angus! Great deal you got on that Micro-Phonies CD! Yeah! Glad you love Rust Red September as well from EIG. I'm glad I came around to their sound eventually! Now I'm obsessed! I hope to pick up more from the Cabs in the future! Cheers to you!
Hey Hannah. Welcome to the Eyeless in Gaza appreciation society :) certainly an acquired taste. Red Rust September is my go to. Such an original sound, so much so that I wouldn’t even attempt to describe who else they sound like. Modern Eon’s Child’s Play was a killer single when it came out (I had to have it). Passions….yes! What a band. German Film Star always makes my list of best songs from the 80s. Barbara Gogan…what a voice. Their third album Sanctuary is worth having as well. Far more polished than the previous two ( recorded at John Foxx’s Garden Studios) and features the addition of Kevin Armstrong to the band ( the album features a cover of one of songs called Love is Essential). Kevin is an artist worth tracking. If you are looking at overlooked post punk albums his first band Local Heroes SW9 released an album called Drip Dry Zone…it’s a must have. This vid really brought back some memories thank you…and enjoy the Cab Voltaire journey, it’s such an interesting ride. Cheers.
Thanks for being here, Brett! Yes, very well said that Eyeless in Gaza are an acquired taste! I'll check out the Passions' 3rd LP as you recommended, as well as Kevin Armstrong's work! I appreciate the recommendations! This post-punk journey is a fun one! Cheers!
This is great, thanks for all the new bands to check out. I immediately went and listened to Eyeless In Gaza's Photographs album. Cabaret Voltaire are one of my all time favourite bands.
Thanks for the comment, Jason! Very cool that Cabaret Voltaire are one of your favorite bands! So glad you were able to sample a little from Eyeless in Gaza, too! Hope you like their sound! Cheers!
Thanks, Paul! Yes, all of you know that I only discuss the music I am extremely passionate about! My love for post-punk runs deep! Glad you enjoyed this video! Hope all is well!
Crispy Ambulance, Aerial FX, 39 Clocks, Passions, Savage Republic, Dog Face Herman’s, Contortions, James White, Asylum Party, and Ideal are all new to me. It wasn’t till the very end until I got to the music I recognized which was Grauzone and Caberet Voltaire. Both of which I only have on comps. New music is why I love your channel and thanks for including the Thick Pigeons sound sample ❤
Ooh! .. The Passions! I saw them live back in the day at one of the Futurama Festivals. Around the time of when ‘I’m In Love With A German Filmstar’ was released.
Thought your start was hilarious and the Beatles tease, I want to see that video happen. I have encountered Eyeless in Gaza before and I remember liking what I heard. I didn’t know For Against was from Nebraska either. Modern Eon…loved the samples and thanks for including them. Ist Ist👏
Hehe, the Beatles-related video offering will happen but I'm not quite sure when! 🤣 I have a few titles I'm throwing around for that one! Yeah, For Against - probably the only notable post-punk band from Nebraska? I don't know. Love reading Jeff's interviews! I'm so glad you bought that new one from Ist Ist! ✔
Thanks for another great episode. This channel keeps me in check when I think I know everything about the punk era circa 1975 - 1990. And beyond. NOTE: This is the ONLY time I've seen the Ideal album since I got mine in Bremen, Germany waaaaay back in the day. Wow!
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words! I love doing the post-punk update videos. I seem to accumulate a lot from the genre! Just can't get enough of it! Yeah, I guess that Ideal debut is pretty rare! I don't really see people talking about it! Love it! Cheers!
Me and my friends had the chance to see James Chance aka James White perform on multiple occasions in NYC back in the early 80’s. Max’s KC, Irving Plaza, and a tiny place called Squat which wasn’t much bigger than a small nyc apartment. I also saw John Cale at the same venue. He was always great and I still have both the “off white” and “buy” albums. He had a fantastic backing band Including Jody Harris, George Scott, and Pat Place. Thanks!
Hi Robert! Ah, so very cool that you got to see James Chance live in the early 80s! Must have been wild and so fun indeed! I appreciate you sharing your concert memories! Cheers!
John Cale's gigs during the 70's until the mid 80's were some of the wildest and most outragous gigs ever performed by any artist. Luckely I discovered him eary 80's, and the two gigs I got to see him at that time, nobody got even close to his stage presence and unpredictable stage antics, and I've seen plenty: Iggy, Siouxsie, PIL, Echo & The Bunnymen, Stranglers, Hüsker Dü, The Fall, Gun Club, Sisters Of Mercy, Psychic TV, New Model Army, Pere Ubu, Rapeman (Steve Albini) to name some. Also saw the Cabs 1982 at the Electric Circus in London, promoting their Crackdown lp. That's all a long, long time ago, but still fond memories, and wouldn't want to miss any of them.
I went to those James White shows with the drummer of a band I know that you are fond of, “the Feelies”. He’s been a lifelong friend of mine and going back to 4th grade. We played together in bands beginning in grammar school. And he was very influential in my musical development.
Another great video Hanna! I thought I knew a lot about the post-punk era, but I didn't know any of those bands! I'll definitely check some of them out. Keep up the great work!
Hi Hanna! Thanks for another deep dive into one of my favourite genres. I’ve heard of many of these bands, but haven’t explored some of them. Early Cabaret Voltaire are pretty cool. Have you ever explored the Lounge Lizards, or a later Arto Lindsay project Ambitious Lovers. Not really post punk, more jazzy with some Brazilian rhythms at times. The vinyl pressing is stellar!
I love the Lounge Lizards spazz jazz! Not all that far afield from James Chance, just a bit more humorous and kitschy noir. Also, Last Exit was kind of in that genre.
You’ll be the death of my bank account!, just sampled and ordered ist ist. I’m a huge post punk fan from uk, love the dry cleaning behind you, they are amazing, she’s on the new sleaford mods album also an amazing band.
Hi Bob! Yeah, I'm a sucker from UK post-punk, too! And Ist Ist are from Manchester, what could be better?! 😉 It's cool that you spotted the Dry Cleaning LP behind me! REally got into them in the last year!
Hey Hanna! Two Cabaret Voltaire LPs you should try to find are “The Crackdown”, and “The Covenant, The Sword And The Arm Of The Lord.” 1983 and 1985, respectively.
Hi Hannah - I don't think you mentioned Sad Lovers & Giants in this video, but if you haven't come across them yet, DEFINITELY check them out, comparable in idiosyncratic quality to Eyeless in Gaza, and i also hear echoes of early Cure and Smiths. GREAT stuff.
I’m super stoked to see the Killing Joke album in the background. They are my favorite band ever and that album is a masterpiece. Loved that you brought up The Contortions. Such a fantastic and interesting band and album!
Hi thank you! Same story here, I'm into post punk now at about the same time. Huge Chameleons fan and I haven't seen all the video yet but I must recommend Sad Lovers and Giants, my favorite is Imagination but they have many others. Will be checking your Chameleons video next! Cheers
Hi Hannah, just sending overdue THANKS for turning me on to Eyeless in Gaza. I can't think of any other post-punk bands (or bands period, for that matter), who blended Middle Eastern themes with a new wave/pop sensibility. It's a unique sound as a result. The main guy's voice is not for everybody, but I've come to appreciate it along with every other aspect of their music. I would really recommend you and others check out the 1993 compilation Voice which surveys their music chronologically from 1980 to 1986. That was my entry to their universe after you mentioned them, and I look forward to picking up all the early albums you showed too.
Interesting picks Hannah!! I dig how you go for the odd & weird, as do I...cool how you go for the NYC No Wave stuff like James Chance & the Contortions and James White & the Blacks...there used to be these 2 cool avant garde clubs in NYC called the Cooler and the original Knitting Factory, used to go in the late 90s & 00's...ok, here are 4 bands/artists, not sure if you know em but I love em...60s band the Monks, Japanese band the Boredoms, John Zorn & Naked City & amazing Canadian band the Spoons...who I think would be totally up your alley...
German film star was a sizeable hit here in the uk, I love it so much I have 2 copies, just in case I scratch one! I do that sometimes, I have 2 copies of racing cars they shoot horses don’t they, and Leo sayer moonlighting, now that is random for an old punk!
Yeah, luckily I got this Ist Ist LP on eBay and didn't have to pay overseas shipping! Would still love to find their 2 albums at a reasonable price! And yes, Manchester really gave us some extraordinary bands! Cheers!
You are the only person I have heard talk of James Chance album Buy. Yeah, I loved that! Also, you may already know of Howard Devoto's post-Magazine band Luxuria. They only have two albums, but their first "Unaswerable Lust" is wonderful. I assume you're familiar, but in case you are not, well worth your time. I look forward to more of your programs. Thanks!
Oooo, I should look for that Dog Faced Herman's reissue - old favorite, I still have a couple disks on CD - makes me think of 'Pet UFO' too, I always pair them in my head, though the first is a bit more crazy
Hey! Glad I found you! I love this "genre". Thank you for your program. I have dozens of albums from post-punk, and will let you know if I think of something you might like. You rock!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert and no problem with the german lyrics ? then you should try out german bands alphaville & propaganda with their 80ies albums in english language
Wow i have some exploring to do with these artists you were showcasing today it's been a fun deep dive and I'll be giving some of these artists a try thanks to this video
Hi Hannah! Lots of great stuff here as I’m watching in segments so I don’t miss anything! Curious, have you ever listened to the Desperate Bicycles? 1979 post punk. I love it! You’d dig it.
Hi Hanna, Great to see the FALL getting some love behind you. That PIL Japanese pressing behind you is amazing. Eyeless in Gaza sound interesting. I will check them out. Great diversity in your picks/likes. Rock ON!
Oh yeah, that PiL Japanese First Issue is definitely one of my most TREASURED records in the collection! Hope you like Eyeless in Gaza, but they are an acquired taste! Cheers!
Great stuff Hannah! How about some earlier Cabaret Voltaire such as their first and second, Mix Up and Voice of America, and their live LP, Live at the YMCA? Plus try the pre Red Mecca outing 2x45. All on Rough Trade.
Hi Neil! Yep, 2x45 is definitely on my want list for Cabaret Voltaire next. I'm still working my way through what I've recently added, however. I'm sure I will be getting to those other CV offerings soon enough! 😁 Cheers to you!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert sorry Hanna, I got a couple of things wrong. I spelt your name incorrectly, plus 2x45 came after Red Mecca…it was 1982, it was a long time ago! 2x45 was their last LP to feature the great tape operator, sound manipulator, Chris Watson, who went on to work for the BBC. Also there are the fantastic 12” EPs called Three Mantras (1980) and 3 Crépescule Tracks (1981). I’m afraid neither of them have jangly guitars!
Great post punk vid. Props on those Asylum Party records I love those, oh also that Modern Eon record too. Found that on vinyl for 7 bucks years ago in Asheville. Love all those records on your back wall as well. Thanks for turning me on to Velveteen. Really like their latest. I'm on a lot of newer shoegaze shit right now. Sparkler, Blushing and Luster to name a few.
Hey there! Glad you're digging that Velveteen LP. It's so good! I'm really enjoying the new Flyying Colours release right now. Oh yeah, Blushing are so damn good! What a score on Modern Eon's LP for $7, too! Cheers!
Howdy Hanna! You definitely featured some overlooked (obscure) Post Punk titles this time. I was only familiar with James White and the Blacks, Contortions 'n Cabaret Voltaire. As usual you've given me a plethora o' new music to explore 'n I thank you.
Hey there, John! Sorry for the delayed response. I'm really behind on TH-cam as we've been doing a lot of bike rides in our spare time. Glad I gave you some new titles to explore here. Happy sampling!
Very cool video. I have that Thick Pigeon on vinyl, great album all the way through, heard "Misuse" on the local college radio station when I was in high school, and found it on vinyl while visiting NYC that summer. Hope you find one. Cheers Hanna!
Thanks for a fascinating tour around the backwaters of post-punk! It was such an incredibly exciting and innovative period in music, too bad there isn't really a modern equivalent. Oh, allow me to recommend the excellent Fire Engines comp 'Fond' if you've not yet had the pleasure...
My thoughts exactly on this period of music. That glorious era of post-punk: '79-'83 just leaves me in awe! Such innovation! I appreciate the recommendation on the comp, too! That's a new one to me. Will check out further this weekend!
Wow. What an orgy of obscurities! For Against deseved to be as big as REM. It's great to see some love for Asylum Party. Have you ever heard The Lucy Show? I think you would really really really like them - especially their 1st album Undone. Where's the Chameleons!!?? 😁Happy listening, Hanna.
I like early Eyeless In Gaza too! There's a CD comp on Cherry Red of early singles and B-sides called "Sixth Sense" that's pretty addictive. But they are a group that keeps evolving, and in the best possible way. I highly recommend the albums "Bitter Apples," "All Under the Leaves, the Leaves of Life," "Song of the Beautiful Wanton," and especially the 3-disc version of "Summer Salt/Subway Sun" from Beta-Lactam Ring in Portland.
Hi Andrew! Thanks so much for the additional Eyeless in Gaza recommendations! I definitely have been eyeing that Cherry Red CD comp! The Cherry Red want list is growing! I will certainly check out some of those newer albums, too. What a catalog, eh?!
Thank you YT algorithm, so glad this channel was recommended; I have been a atl rock/post punk fan for over 40 years; this is only the 2nd vid of yours I have seen but the records you have in the background blew me away. I bought "caught in the Flux in 1983, just after getting into post punk (the fall, G of 4, KJ, JD, Cure,, echo, chameleons, Wire, magazine, Bauhaus, chameleons, sound, lucy show, Cocteau T, Felt, Died Pretty, all the Paisly Underground stuff........) Been a fan of For Against since hearing about the in the Big Takeover in 1990. Can't wait to check out your other videos.
Thanks, Tony! Yeah, a lot of these records are more off the beaten path and probably not for everyone but I'm always happy to talk about any and all post-punk!
Interesting to see you discovering the music of my youth. Glad you discovered Eyeless in Gaza. I think Rust Red September is their best, probably because that was the only vinyl album of theirs I had when I was young. Check out the recent Cherry red box set for everything they did on that label. I have a suggestion for a more obscure band to check out I listened to again recently - the Laughing Clowns, from Australia. Also have you heard Josef K ?
This is absolutely brilliant - just when I thought I had post punk 'covered', no I very much haven't. Several additions here for my Discogs list, most excellent. Please keep them coming, great job you are doing here, spreading to good word on obscurities. I recently got hold of Caught In Flux by EIG myself. Yet to spin it, so will be very soon. I may have mentioned these bands before to you: The Passage The Method Actors The Dancing Did You may well have some already. If not, trust me - you will love them all! Take care 🙂
Hi George! I'm glad you got a copy of Caught in Flux! It's such a wonderful LP! I know of the Passage but I haven't checked out The Method Actors or the Dancing Did. Will be looking them up, thank you! And I'm always happy to do a post-punk update video! Appreciate you hanging out!
Recently stumbled on an OG press of Middle Class- Homeland from 1982 and absolutely loved it. I'm far from an expert but i think they could qualify for the next overlooked post punk video :)
So glad you got The Passions Michael and Miranda and their second album too !! and another great list, as usual. There's also this very obscure british band called Bona Dish that released a couple of cassetes in 81-82 and then disbanded. Then, several years later, there was a compilation called The Zaragoza Tapes with their whole catalogue. It's super rare, but a favorite of mine. They sounded kind of like those charming Postcard records releases, with a bit of early The Cure with female vocals ? It's unpolished and jangly in true indie fashion but very catchy. Also predates the type of sweet/sour indie pop of bands like Heavenly or Tiger Trap that got a respectable cult following in the early 90s
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Eyes of beautiful losers has a middle eastern sound to me.... seriously underrated band. When I first listened to it, I accidentally listened to it at 33rpm, it sounded brilliant!!!! LOL
Post punk fan support here! I'm going to check out For Against, new to me! Asylum Party and Ariel FX both sound really interesting. I'm also a fan of no wave and darkwave. nice acquisitions! Listening to these albums this week: Last Tourist s/t (new shoegaze from UK), PIL's Flowers of Romance, Drain by Troller, It will come to you by Actors, and Juju by Siousie/Banshees.
Hey Rando! How's it going? I hope you like For Against. Definitely check out December and Echelons from them first! Bet you'll dig! Ah, PiL's Flowers of Romance. That one took me an extra long time to embrace, but now I love it! I'm sampling Last Tourist on Apple Music now, thanks! Enjoying "Black Raven." Cheers!
Post-punk medium is strong with you. And that is a very good thing. Dug the selections especially 39 Clocks which I have here as well. Recommendation for you is Es "Less Of Everything" on UK label Upset The Rhythm, which releases tons of great modern post-punk from the UK. You should dig that one, take care!
Really great as ever, Hanna. Quite a few I’m not familiar with there, so I’ll be checking them out. Enjoyed the samples too. As I commented to another viewer, it seems you have two of us from Eyeless in Gaza’s home town. Must be something in the water, as they say! Some I enjoy AC Maria’s - One of Our Girls is maybe loosely post punk but a lovely record. Sure you’re familiar with Swell Maps, ramshackle but somehow melodic. Rip, Rig and Panic with Neneh Cherry (and featuring her stepfather, Don!) for a strange brew of funk, reggae, jazz, experimental. You may know them all, it’s difficult to keep up with your collection! Cheers, Wayne.
Hey there, Wayne! Glad you enjoyed the song samples I was able to include. Unfortunately I have to keep any song samples under 10 seconds or I get dinged by TH-cam. I love Swell Maps. Unfortunately I had to get rid of a newer reissue of Jane from Occupied Europe because the pressing was off center and there were pitch issues. It was so terrible. Hopefully I find a better copy at some point. Eyeless in Gaza - I am just head over heels for them! I'll have to check out Rip, Rig and Panic! New to me! Be well!
Excellent albums. I have a few of those in my collection as well, mostly as mp3. Huge Cabs fan. Have you noticed the Micro-Phonies poster in Ferris Bueller's bedroom in the film? I'd love that on my wall! Happy collecting and hello from Sacramento.
Thanks so much for watching! Yes, another comment below mentions the Micro-Phonies poster in Ferris Bueller. Very cool poster to own! Be well and see you next time!
Tight contest in the early 80s between Crispy Ambulance and Section 25 for the title of second-best band on Factory. Lowtide are a band I picked up on from one of your Shoegaze videos. They've done a version of Asylum Party's Julia.
That section 25 debut goes for a lot of money! I fear I will never come across their stuff. Oh, I'm so happy that you are loving Lowtide. I actually had no idea they covered Asylum Party's "Julia," so thanks for letting me know! I wonder if they are still together. It's been a while since they released an album.
Nice to see someone so passionate about postpunk! I like to broaden it somewhat and call my genre "guitarwave" of which 90% could be defined as postpunk/coldwave. Great to see Asylum Party in there! And For Against! If you are interested to look into the label IPR there's some more interesting bands on there with hand-printed (letterpress) record and CD packages by Bruce Licher (Savage Republic - Scenic). Interesting bands are Abecedarians, Half String, Red Temple Spirits. As I am from Holland I would like to recommend two bands: 1. De Div - Open Zee (mini album and singing in dutch witch could be interesting for you) 2. The Gentry - Fragments of truth (pretty unknown although John Peel liked them, album is very hard to come by, second album is also very good) Just putting my two cents in, thx Herbert
Hey Hanna, sorry if I haven’t watched your videos in a while.Great Post Punk video, been a fan of the genre since high school in the late 2000s,i’m definitely gonna check out IST IST and Cripsy Ambulance cuz I luv the music of Manchester…take care!
Always great to watch your videos! Since you talked a lot about Europe, have you ever listened to something from Italy? I suggest Chrisma, they were post punk ahead of their time in ‘77! You should give it a try!
Yes! So glad to see EIG in there - Photographs as Memories and Drumming the Beating Heart are incredible. And as you say Martyn's vocals are amazing - a slightly acquired taste, maybe. But still. Knives Replace Air, Picture the Day, One by One, Speech Rapid Fire, White Wash - oh and the incredible Veil Like Calm. PS I also rate For Against - and in particular, their track Sabres.
I can't remember if I had told you about this German band before, but check out New Days Delay. They put out a couple albums and an EP from 2000 to 2014. My favourite track is "Radioactive" from their first album; Splitterelastisch.
Great video per usual! I was researching some of the titles you suggested and stumbled upon this gem I think you minght really enjoy! 'Twin Tribes - Shadows' So cool to see this genre alive and well in 2023! - Cheers!
Thanks, Steven! I have heard of the name Twin Tribes but I guess I never properly looked them up. I will be checking them out this long upcoming weekend! Cheers!
Hi Hannah, great to see younger people keeping the spirit of great and relevant music alive. Great pick with the Cabs, saw them back in London at the Electric Ballroom in 1982 promoting their Crackdown album. Here are a few suggestions that might be of interrest fitting into the post-punk category: - Half Japanese - Charmed Life (1988), The Man Who Would Be King (1988) - Tuxedo Moon - Desire (1981) - The Flying Lizards - selftitled (1979) - The Cassandra Complex - Grenada (1986) The Earcom 2 - Contradiction ep, with Joy Division, Basczax and Thursdays (1979) - John Cale - Caribbean Sunset (1984), Music For A New Society (1982) Fad Gadget - Fireside Favorites (1980), Gag (1984) Grosse Freiheit - Die Moschusfunktion (1982) Maybe there is something you haven't heard yet, some of the albums are even uploaded here on YT. Please keep up the desire for discovering and discussing great music, there is still so much brillant music out there!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Your vast collection of records (post-punk and more) is impressive and I thought mine was impressive! Well, it is impressive actually, as I've been collecting since the 80's. I have an original of that Sad Lovers and Giants (Sorry, keeping that one) and though new to your channel, there are some bands I wonder if you're familiar with and maybe possible records you are looking for that I may have. (I sell records on the side). In any event, it's exciting to see other people out there with the same enthusiasm.
🙋♂️ Hanna - Very cool Modern Eon record ! .. Love The Passions & Barbara Gogan " I'm In Love With A German Filmstar " has such a beautiful introduction & was very innovative at the time with the echo on the guitar. The Foo Fighters have covered it. Microphonies is awesome 👌 .. The video to Sensoria hooked me. 3 recommendations .. The Scars ( From Scotland ) Author ! Author ! A classic from 1981. The Abecedarians ( Discovered by Bernie from New Order ) Both albums Eureka & Resin are great but CD 💿 compilation AB-CD with some remixes is best bet. From Atlanta .. 86 .. 3 great atmospheric albums. Pretty cheap on line. Great start to the day ! Thanks ✌️
Hey, hey, David! Yeah, it's a dream having this Modern Eon on vinyl! I still can't find any Abecedarians for a decent price. They've been on my wantlist for a while now since you and others mentioned them. That compilation you recommended isn't even available on Discogs. 86 and The Scars I'm definitely going to be looking up next! You never steer me wrong! Thanks, as always!
Yeah Post-Punk!!! Is that Epic Garden Music (behind you) the OG? LOVE that record. Love everything you shared. I might have a couple Savage Republic dupes. Hit me up. Have a Thick Pigeon I might part with, and a Stanton Miranda (related). So happy to have helped with the For Against stuff! My pleasure to help on everything. You run a great show!
Kurt, thank you so very much once again. Yes, that is a copy of Epic Garden Music behind me, but it's one of the newer reissues. I've never seen an original. It's an amazing record from an incredible band for sure! Oh wow, I'll be in touch about the Thick Pigeon/related stuff you may have! Very interested! Interested to learn what Savage Republic you have, too! And I'm thrilled to finally have a copy of December on vinyl. It's a masterpiece! Cheers!
Huge Savage Republic fan. For Against put an album out on the band's Independent Project record label, they did some of the most beautiful and intricate packaging.
Thank you so much for watching! What other albums do you love by Savage Republic? Yeah, the Independent Project label put out some amazing records! Cheers!
Hi Hanna, good night,I have Durutti Column's LC,brazilian press vinyl, and I have Cabaret Voltaire's The Covenant, the sword and the arm of the lord, french press in vinyl, congratulations by your video, cheers and have a nice weekend for you always!!!!!!!
Hey there! I think my copy of LC by Durutti Column is a Canadian press but I have to double check. Their stuff is hard to find on vinyl but I'd love to find more. Cheers and hope all is well!
Grauzone are quite popular in Europe, not only among Post Punk fans, cause their track Eisbar was a minor hit that was also played in every club during the late 90s/early 2000 (thanks to the Electroclash trend). When you start digging into German New Wave, don’t skip the first album and first singles from a band called Palais Schaumburg (my favorite!). Also, the marvelous Malaria!, DAF, Mau Mau and more that now I cannot recall. And it’s nice to see someone who shares the same thoughts on that Savage Republic album, I’ve had it for years now, but I still can’t get over those vocals, ugh…
Thank you for leaving a comment! I love Malaria! and would love to find something of theirs on vinyl. I need to check out some of the others you listed here! Yeah, I'm not huge into this Savage Republic LP but it has its moments! Cheers to you!
My older brother was a Fra Lippo Lippi fan before. He even saw them live here in Manila I think in 1987-88. The only cassette tape of his I have with me now is "In Silence" which I still listen too. With Cabaret Voltaire, the first record of them I bought and heard was "the Conversation" which is pure space ambient and not the post punk/industrial music one would expect. Thanks for some artists recommendations. Will try to find Modern Eon and 39 Clocks CDs/vinyl here.
Hey there! Fra Lippo Lippi were so great! I'd still love to find that first LP. It's interesting to hear the evolution of Cabaret Voltaire! Hope you enjoyed Modern Eon and 39 Clocks after sampling! Cheers!
OK. You're freaking me out now. Asylum Party is one of my favorite bands. I discovered them about 13 years ago and I told my musical partner that I wanted to do a modern version of the Asylum Party vibe. Then I discovered Soft Kill and they had went ahead and did it! You have great taste in music!
Thanks so very much! I tried getting into Soft Kill but maybe I just didn't sample the "right" album. What is your favorite by them? And we gotta spread the word about Asylum Party! Cheers!
Eyeless In Gaza! I got to see Martyn perform live in 2000. Love Drumming the beating heart and their most experimental album Pale Hands I Loved So Well. Modern Eon is on my want list. Friend of mine had Child's Play 7" back in the day
Jealous that you've been able to see Martyn live! Such a talent. I'm having a harder time getting into Pale Hands I loved So Well but I adore Drumming the Beating Heart!
Hi Hannah, thank you for all these bands, i wasn't aware of most of them, though i'm a long time fan of Eyeless in Gaza and the Passions. I would add two of my own : one obscure band, maybe more pop oriented, named Perfect Zebras, that i recently discovered (only LPs, never reedited in cds, but very affordable) ; and the canadian band Martha and the Muffins (especially their LP Metro Music). Hope for more videos like this !
Greetings! I appreciate the comment. I used to have two Martha & the Muffins' LPs but sadly I traded them in. I haven't heard of Perfect Zebras, though. Thanks, I'll look them up for sure! Cheers!
The Passions was a great recommendation, I'm really digging their sound. You should check out Savage Republic's album Live in Europe, I think you would enjoy that one much more!
I thought your video was going to be a clean sweep of artists for which I am unfamiliar. Until you pulled out that excellent final album from Dog Faced Hermans. Definitely check out their previous release, Hum of Life. Marion Coutts is definitely a unique talent. She presently is an author, sculpter, photographer, and filmmaker. Her book The Iceberg is a very interesting and moving read. Highly recommended. I love videos like this. Thanks so much Hanna for covering all of these unknown artists for me to check out. I pulled up a couple of Ist Ist videos and you are correct abot the Ian Curtis vocal similarities. One last thing. I don't recognize that Sound album on display. What is it? Gratitude.
Hey Todd - That is the 🇺🇸 pressing of The Shock Of Daylight EP on A&M Records .. I am 99% certain & Hanna can confirm. They toured here in Summer of 84. I saw them at Club Lingerie in Los Angeles.
Thanks, Todd! Yeah, I'm after more Dog Faced Hermans but their other albums are VERY difficult and expensive to get! Glad you were able to sample some Ist Ist, too! And looks like David below beat me to it...that is indeed my US pressing of Shock of Daylight! 😀
Cabaret Voltaire's 2x45 is excellent.
I've rarely clicked on a video and clicked "like" so quickly. You can *never* do enough videos on postpunk for me! I've really enjoyed all the videos you've made on that genre and I've discovered a lot of music from them, and expect to discover even more now. Thanks for all the great work you do on these!
Thanks, Phil! Really glad you're enjoying the post-punk focus! I'm happy to share my passion for the genre! Hope all is well and fine!
Great video and nice to see you mentioned The Cabs (Cabaret Voltaire). I remember listening to them when I used to go to venues around Sheffield in the 1980's.
Thank you! The Cabs are in heavy rotation in this house right now! Really glad you enjoyed this video!
The Micro Phonies album is so awesome. Very underrated. Do right is a great track.
The Cabaret Voltaire CD is genius.
Really loving the Cabs more and more each time I listen! Thanks for the comment!
Cheers!
Being a big Asylum Party fan and owning their original pressings makes me happy to see you expressing love for the band.
Cheers!
Glad youre keeping the postpunk faith. Great content. My list of bands to check out is growing. ! Happy listening.
I'm so late! Thanks, Paul! Ah, that's cool that you own comps by Grauzone and the Cabs! And I figured Thick Pigeon would be one you enjoyed! 😉
So much great ground covered here. And I love seeing those PIL and The Fall albums on proud display. ❤ Hanna
I'm so glad you were able to catch this post-punk update! And yes, gotta have PiL and The Fall on display for a post-punk offering! Hope all is well!
Ooh! .. The Passions! I saw them live back in the day at one of the Futurama Festivals. Around the time of when ‘I’m In Love With A German Filmstar’ was released.
How fantastic that you got to see the Passions during that time! Thanks for sharing/watching! Cheers!
Brilliant to see you exploring the post-punk genre again! I’m very much looking forward to watching this 😊👍🏻
Hope you enjoy this video, Christian! Thanks!
sooo many great ones here. contortions, fehlfarben, grauzone, cabaret voltaire. all big inspirations to me.
Thanks! I was really happy to talk about these LPs/bansd! Hope all is well.
James Chance live must be the best. He says he was always wanting to be James Brown making the crowd go nuts than any kind of pretentious artiste.
Another great video Hanna! I thought I knew a lot about the post-punk era, but I didn't know any of those bands! I'll definitely check some of them out. Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much, David! I was happy to discuss some of these more obscure post-punk bands! Happy sampling!
Thank you, Murray! I have always heard of Lounge Lizards but never looked into them. I need to change that. Check ya later!
Yes to the Lounge Lizards. I dig their debut. Jazzy with an edge.
Great stuff! Ive quite recently been totally obsessed with 39 clocks and Jürgen Gleue solo stuff under the alter ego Phantom Payn. Soo good!
Okay, I need to check out Phantom Payn! Thanks for letting me know! Cheers!
Hey Hanna!
Two Cabaret Voltaire LPs you should try to find are “The Crackdown”, and “The Covenant, The Sword And The Arm Of The Lord.” 1983 and 1985, respectively.
Hi Murray. Sir, I did feature the Crackdown in this video.
I'm sure I will be getting other albums by them eventually as I see them.
She has a SLAG LP on her shelf
I’m super stoked to see the Killing Joke album in the background. They are my favorite band ever and that album is a masterpiece. Loved that you brought up The Contortions. Such a fantastic and interesting band and album!
Hi thank you! Same story here, I'm into post punk now at about the same time. Huge Chameleons fan and I haven't seen all the video yet but I must recommend Sad Lovers and Giants, my favorite is Imagination but they have many others. Will be checking your Chameleons video next! Cheers
Great bunch right in my wheelhouse, love most of the bands you mentioned.
High five to that! I'm all in with post-punk! The addiction is real!
(Fletch wakes up) “Nurse, where am I?” “Dr. this is the records room.” “Do you have The Beatles White Album?” 😂😂
So much to discover! Thanks for sharing!
You bet! I'm really glad you stopped by!
I will for sure check out the Spoons! Thank you! And yeah, that no wave scene was so great! Cheers!
German film star was a sizeable hit here in the uk, I love it so much I have 2 copies, just in case I scratch one! I do that sometimes, I have 2 copies of racing cars they shoot horses don’t they, and Leo sayer moonlighting, now that is random for an old punk!
Love your music taste. Ist Ist very exy to purchase, also normally very limited copies pressed, always excellent music out of Manchester 👍
Thanks!
I need to find some of those For Against albums. I checked them out, and they sound amazing.
You rock!
I like the way you are introducing the video with great details and you are so great in your analysis. Greetings from Athens
I've gotten into a lot of new bands watching your channel Hannah, and for that I thank you.
Thank you, Gary! Always happy to have you stop by and the Technics is still bringing me tons of joy!
OMG!! Crispy Ambulance! Such a great album you shared!
Final comment. I think I have every one (maybe sans one) of the LP's you have displayed today!
Yeah, I'm soooo glad Drastic Plastic had that copy there that day!
I am not surprised that you have the majority of these in your collection, Kurt! Your collection is insanely good!
Wow, Fehlfarben, Grauzone & Ideal great stuff from Germany, well done Hanna!
Thanks so much! Definitely have added some German goodies into the collection!
It's awesome for me to read that you will be exploring some of these bands further. Happy sampling, George! Music saves!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert I'll have fun exploring some of these bands and I'm always up for checking out new bands that are in my wheelhouse
You are so lucky that you have Thick Pigeon on vinyl! Too cool! Hope you enjoy the upcoming long weekend! I appreciate your comments as always!
Crispy Ambulance is one of my favorites. Got a bunch of their stuff. I even liked their reunion album that no one else seemed to like in my circle
Awesome! I really can't wait to explore more from them. They definitely deserve more praise!
I totally agree that For Against deserved so much more! I have both Lucy Show LPs in my collection. Absolutely amazing band! Cheers to you!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert You are the Queen of Post Punk.
Excellent post-punk albums you showed off, Hanna! Of course, all of it is unfamiliar with me.
Thanks, Tony! Yeah, a lot of these records are more off the beaten path and probably not for everyone but I'm always happy to talk about any and all post-punk!
I totally dig the James Chance stuff…. especially “Buy”. Great video! Thanks!!😃
Right on! That's some funky stuff! I appreciate you hanging out!
I may have mentioned these bands before to you:
The Passage
The Method Actors
The Dancing Did
You may well have some already.
Yes, upon the recommendation of that one from a friend, I sampled it a month or so ago. Great one! Would love to find a copy one day.
ANother really nice selection. With Crispy Ambulance! Plus a bunch of new-to-me bands to search out... thanks! Thick Pigeon, whoo!
Half Man Half Biscuit: 'You're going home in a Crispy Ambulance!'
Thanks so much! Yeah, nice to have that Crispy Ambulance reissue! Enjoy exploring some of these other ones! Cheers!
Great vid ! Lots of new music to explore. If you’re looking for newer post punk , both Shame and the Murder Capital have put out new lps this year.
Yes indeed! Gigi's Recovery is such a great LP! I still need to pick up a physical copy! I need to sample Shame's latest some more! Thanks!
Excellent Hanna... Thanks for the mention... You've now got double the amount of Eyless in gaza than I've got LOL
Better catch up then! Hehe, seriously, thanks to your video, I'm now a big fan!
I had discogs open the entire time I watched this video! Some records I already have and some I need to get!
New to me! Be well!
Nice to see albums I’m not familiar with. I always walk away from your channel learning something new about music. Well done. Enjoyed the video.
Thank you! It's truly a blast doing these post-punk videos! Enjoy the rest of your week!
As I am from Holland I would like to recommend two bands:
1. De Div - Open Zee (mini album and singing in dutch witch could be interesting for you)
2. The Gentry - Fragments of truth (pretty unknown although John Peel liked them, album is very hard to come by, second album is also very good)
Just putting my two cents in, thx Herbert
On yeah, Cabaret Voltaire! Check the live Hai!
Hey there! Thanks for watching! Chrisma's Chinese Restaurant LP has been on my want list for a while! Cheers!
Thank you for the recommendation! I shall explore them further! Cheers!
Cheers!
Definitely do a post punk album rankings video- really like to see what your favs are!
Thanks for the vote for a favorite post-punk albums video! Cheers!
Hi Hannah, great to see younger people keeping the spirit of great and relevant music alive. Great pick with the Cabs, saw them back in London at the Electric Ballroom in 1982 promoting their Crackdown album.
Here are a few suggestions that might be of interrest fitting into the post-punk category:
- Half Japanese - Charmed Life (1988), The Man Who Would Be King (1988)
- Tuxedo Moon - Desire (1981)
- The Flying Lizards - selftitled (1979)
- The Cassandra Complex - Grenada (1986)
The Earcom 2 - Contradiction ep, with Joy Division, Basczax and Thursdays (1979)
- John Cale - Caribbean Sunset (1984), Music For A New Society (1982)
Fad Gadget - Fireside Favorites (1980), Gag (1984)
Grosse Freiheit - Die Moschusfunktion (1982)
Maybe there is something you haven't heard yet, some of the albums are even uploaded here on YT.
Please keep up the desire for discovering and discussing great music, there is still so much brillant music out there!
Top left album, next to the Sound, Sad Lovers and Giants...I have that LP! Nice channel.
Isn't that a stunning album? I wish I could find an original but this recent reissue isn't bad! Happy to have you here, thank you!
Thanks ✌️
The Scars were excellent. Saw them supporting The Human League on their Travelogue tour. Paul Research had Christmas tree lights on his Stratocaster.
Cheers!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Tragic Figures, Customs and Live Trek.
Brad Laner, who performs on the Customs album, also released many excellent records with his noise pop project Medicine.
@@TheOmahaIntrovert,ok,thanks a lot as always!!!!!!!!
So interesting to watch your channel always learning
That's one of my objectives - to spread the word about these excellent and worthy bands! Thanks for watching!
Cheers!
Best post punk album of all time: Metal Box. 2nd edition by PIL
Such a groundbreaking one. I'm thankful to have both the Metal Box and LP editions. Cheers!
I won't argue with that.
Cheers!
@@TheOmahaIntrovert Well the album that got me into them was Choke. And yes! Let the world know of Asylum Party!!!
Enjoyed watching this very much. Thanks.
Thanks so much for hanging out! Glad you dug this video!
Some great choices, have you heard The Scars-'Author Author'(1981) album? It was their only studio album and I have loved it for over forty years.
More Beatles content! no other channel does that, you’ll be ahead of the curve.😅
@@davidellis5141 thanks for the info David. Glad you saw them live!
@@toddhill7483 Sure .. The Comsats only came to Los Angeles once in support of Chasing Shadows in 1986 & I saw them as well.
