  • Video #723: Starting with a Skinner or Teardrop Blend that has good color contrast, is key to making Zipper Canes that work... More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
    In the previous video, I showed how to get more color contrast in your polymer clay color blends. This can be very important when making certain polymer clay canes... especially a Zipper Cane.
    If you don't have enough contrast between the darkest to the lightest colors in your blend, your Zipper cane design will lose its impact, visually. Colors that are too close to the same value, will blur together and the pattern will be difficult to see. This is especially the case if you reduce your cane to a smaller size.
    So... before attempting this Zipper Cane Tutorial, make sure to first watch the "More Contrast In Your Polymer Clay Skinner Blends" video, so that you end up with a pleasing result for your zipper cane.
    As you will see in the video, once you have a good Teardrop Blend with nice contrast, you can easily transform it into a Zipper Cane in just a few steps.
    The first step is to manipulate your cane into a long strip between 1" to 2" in width. The blend should go from side to side down the entire strip, rather than from end to end. In the video you will see what I mean.
    This strip is then cut in half, leaving you with two long strips that you will flip one side to side and stack on top of the other. Making sure that light edge of Piece Two is now on top of the dark edge of Piece One... and that the dark edge of Piece Two is on top of the light edge of Piece One. Again, this makes the most sense when you can see it done in the video.
    Then, to make this double layered alternating stack into a cane, you simply cut in half and stack... repeating until you have a rectangular cane that suits your needs.
    This Zipper Cane can then be reduced to a smaller size as needed, and sliced to be used for whatever you want. Zipper Cane slices make great earrings, beads, buttons, pendants, polymer clay background sheets, slices to add to bangle bracelets, frames, candle holders, etc., etc.
    Try this cane out in lots of different color ways.
    Have fun!

    It's nice to see you're still commenting on your videos and continuing to help people just starting out, despite the videos being a few years old! Great work

      Thank you I appreciate you saying that! I try to respond to as many comments as possible. Although many of the videos are several years old in my channel, the content is still relevant, so to the person who has just seen it for the first time, they deserve as much interaction as the people who saw it when it first came out. I can't always reach every question, but I do my best.

    i have made jewelry over the years working with metal, etc. I now have turned to polymer clay and I am a very first time beginner, who loves it. Thank you for your videos they have helped me and given me hope. I have also worked with natural clay and so polymer is totally different and a new experience.

    Hi Cindy, Just found ur channel and subscribe!!! :D Really love ur tuts!! I'll need a lot of time to watch them all :D
    Can you please answer one question I have? The little clay I've work on it is Fimo and I really hate Premo cause I bought 2 blocks of Premo (black and blue) and I never opened them until 2 years later and I had to throw them... It's impossible to make anything with them even warm it... it's just like plastic scraped... soo my question is... which is the longest time you have been able to work on a fimo you had opened before?
    Thank you!!!

      @PolymerClayTutor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I am not positive which colors I used on the brown cane, since it was so long ago... but just guessing by looking at it, it appears to be a teardrop blend from Premo Bronze to Premo Gold to Premo Pearl. Hope that helps!

    Hi I watch you all the time I have only just got in to claying am using fimo an just got a paster machine can I put any oven bake clay in it an can I condition sheets and put them in a box till I want to use them or will I have to re put them throw each time thanks if you read this xx

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might need to run them through the machine again to soften them up and make them workable, but it shouldn't take as long if they were conditioned well once before.

  • @elizabethfisher5825

    I used the same amount of clay but couldn't get the blend long enough to cut. Instead of a square I had a half of the square.

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My guess is that your clay was either thicker or wider and that is why the blend wasn't as long. You can cut your stack in half and stack again, so you end up with something closer to what you want. Go back and watch the video carefully again and see if you can figure out what you may have done differently. Good luck!

    Wondering if you can keep cut out designs in one place until it efficiently makes sense to bake. Saving a buck…..but if they don’t hold up it’s waste a buck.
