Several accidents on Hong Kong roads involving elderly taxi drivers in 2023 have sparked public debate on whether stricter medical requirements or even an age limit should be imposed on commercial drivers. Wong Po-keung, who is still driving his taxi after 55 years, said elderly taxi drivers help ease Hong Kong’s labour shortage. The 76-year-old cabby said the public should not discriminate against senior drivers because of their age, but rather consider the attitude of individual drivers.

I don't think there should be a set age you retire from driving, but there should be a set age where you start having yearly tests to see if you're fit for driving though.

I don't know legislation in other countries but as long as he's healthy and proves he can drive with tests like is mandatory here then what is the problem? I would rather had an experience veteran driver than a young inexperienced one. In fact 90% of the accidents here are caused by young people xD

I mean, Youngster tend to be rash and reckless so except that they have the highest accident rate.

Maybe the 76 year old loves driving so much. If he likes what he does let him continue. Staying at home can be boring for some ppl.

I MET THE 88 YO DRIVER, WHO PRACTICED SAI BABA DIET, THEY USUALLY HAVE STRICT DIET, ONLY VEGGIES WITH LITTLE SALT. HE HAS PERFECT EYES AND SENSES, AND NO HEALTH PROBLEM.LOOKS LIKE 65-70YO.

Singapore china japan korea my respect for these drivers. They can keep on driving as long as they can. I never get them to carry my suitcases of course- too heavy. Respect for ppl who work instead of retiring.
Is there a statistic on the correlation between age and driving? If there is, it will probably show the opposite. There are more younger driver causing major accidents than the older one. Wanna bet that I am right on this?

my mother retired when she 55. She want to continue her career as a teacher but her employer said shes too old... And these day she said Im bored watching the TV after doing house work. Even my aunt bored after their retirement. They wish they can continue to work.

I agree because in New York, there are elderly bus drivers, elderly taxi drivers, Uber/Lyft drivers as well.
As long as they are healthy and follow the traffic rules, it should be supported. That latter is a problem for most drivers in HK 😅
Bangkok has also many old cab drivers, I'm very happy when I meet one of them because they like to speak, talk how was Bangkok in the past, talk about politics and many other things. On the contrary, young people are taciturn, with lower social interaction skills.
I agree with him, it is easy for elderly to get Alzheimer's if they are doing nothing on a daily basis, and it could be so boring as their child has their own job and their grandchildren need to study most of the time. Don't give me old age is the cause of the car accident. Young people are also involved in car accidents because of their hot blood and ego. Yes, i agree with him. it is all about the individuals not the age.

If youre still driving over 70 you should have to take a test every year. Ive seen too many elderly drivers making dangerous moves almost causing accidents.

who couldve guessed that eldery taxi drivers are crashing when theyre pretty much filling the shortage of drivers, like obviously if theyre the majority theyll cause the crash. just like in germany where most crashes are by young drivers yet most serious crashes in germany are elderly losing controll. theyll always blame the majority of people. but never really look into whats really happening.
these are dirt rally drivers rather than f1 drivers
