Heart emerged from an era when lead guitarists received just as much if not more spotlight as the vocalist. AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, The Runaways, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith. Heart was no exception. Nancy got mad respect.
@@headlibrarian1996 Don't quote me on this but if I remember correctly, the band was pretty much already formed before Nancy came into the picture. I also remember reading something, that she preferred playing rhythm over lead.
I love when Nancy at the end of her opening solo, grabs a guitar pick from the mic stand, pulls back and telegraphs to the audience "hang on to your butts, here it comes"!
Nancy is a classical trained guitar player... Besides singing similar to Ann and harmonizes perfectly with Ann. Must be genetics.... They are Really Amazing!
@@sourisvoleur4854 I'm thinking that they did grow up with a best friend who helped them wrote their earlier songs and treated her like a third sister.
Ann and Nancy are both phenomenally talented. When you said, "I want to listen to live performances" before this one, I can't imagine anyone was worried. Ann just beat cancer and hopes to be back to performing soon. The inducting Led Zeppelin into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance was brilliant. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant cried it was so beautiful.
Nancy is also a phenomenal singer. Check out “These Dreams” to hear her. Unfortunately, the studio version is unique because she had a cold when it was recorded giving her rendition a sultry edge to it.
I saw Heart during their "Bébé le Strange" tour (1980). It was their first album after Roger Fisher left the band. The show was really good, and the sound was fantastic. Their sound crew did an awesome job. It was virtually free of distortion. Joe Perry (from Aerosmith) was supposed to be the opening act, but he was a no-show. I think he called in drunk....
Two historically talented sisters from Seattle. You have to give a lot of credit to their father a career army man who invoked his girls to regular sing a longs. Hard to believe Ann stuttered as a child. Both of these women are incredibly talented as you can plainly see and hear.
Nancy Wilson with the wind in her hair and her acoustic guitar virtuosity stole my heart in 1980, and hasn't given it back yet. (And she does vocals -- backing vocals on most tracks, lead on some, she's a very good singer compared to anyone except Ann...)
You mentioned old school raw talent versus modern commercialized fireworks, glitz, glamour, and autotuned voices. I'm with you. Modern commercialized work is like eating plastic tasting processed cheese - Synthetic taste with no depth. Ann is one of Rock's finest vocalists. She has so much power, nuance, sustainability, and control in her singing voice. Nancy is also incredible .. and she can sing too. In fact, Nancy sings lead vocal on about 18 Heart songs.
This was Heart's best song to perform live, throughout their career, it's just lots of energy. This performance is early, and with Nancy just rocking out on the acoustic guitar it makes the performance. It's not easy to play acoustic guitar that aggressively for several minutes, it takes a lot of strength and skill. Live performances are the best, especially at my age where I've been listening to these songs since high school, seeing a live performance gives you something different from what's been played on the radio a million times.
"I'm sensing a ballad ..." just give it a moment, dear lady :) First impressions can deceive sometimes :D Aah, Nancy - one of the greatest rhythm players we have seen in many a long decade.
I went to, and saw Heart at, Cal Jam 2 (Mar. 1978). I was just 15yrs9mos and it was my first concert. Got dropped off the night before (about 9 or 10pm)...my older brother got lost getting us drinks before Santana (fourth in the lineup) performed...and then hitchhiked home to San Berdoo after Aerosmith was done (about 12 to 1am = approx. 27 hours later). Luckily someone responded to my "shout" at the tunnel exiting under the track; "anyone going to San Berdoo?" They ended up living just a few blocks from me and got me home. My brother ended up being sent to a hospital for his asthma.
I know this band thanks to your precise description, I noticed that the volume of the singer's microphone was low, the sound of the instruments stood out much more.🌺
That was a dual lead guitar solo by lead guitarist Roger Fisher (on the right, by Nancy) and Howard Leese (on the far left). Howard Leese (keyboards, guitar) didn't get enough praise for what he did for the band. After Roger Fisher left, Leese took over the lead guitar position. He was very talented.
Every member of the band was exceptional. I had the privilege of seeing them live. They didn't need any show tricks or visual effects. They were just raw talent.
There are 3 elements that make a song "pure Heart sound". 1) Amazing vocals from Ann in general. 2) Stunning harmonies with Nancy/Ann that are breathtaking when isolated. 3) "Music drops" during a song that come out of nowhere and completely change not just the "vibe" of a song, but the energy of both the performers AND listeners at the same time. And "Crazy On You" and "Magic Man" are prime examples of these elements taking what would be a "decent/average song" to a completely different level of perfection.
But the 70s and 80s wouldn't have had all that great music if it weren't for the revolutionary changes in music that went on in the 60s. So for me, I have to add the 60s too.

Biss, your next Heart assignment is "Magic Man" - their best song ever, in my opinion! The song is 5 minutes, 30 seconds long, but many videos cut the song in half. I hope you can find the full version of the song. "Crazy On You", "Magic Man" and "Barracuda" are Heart's best works, IMO. I have never grown tired of them after all these years.
Heart is the real deal for sure. One of the best things to ever come out of Seattle! These were my high school years, and Ann & Nancy were all over the radio back then. Great stuff! Thanks for sharing tis one, Biss.
Hello my favorite biscuit you're beautiful as always when this song came out I've actually been into Heart since they're very first album had a mad crush on Ann and Nancy Wilson also they have a lot of great songs
I have a Heart greatest hits album and that acoustic lead in Nancy does at the beginning is on the CD as a separate track called Silver Wheels. It is meant to be a lead in to Crazy on You but it does have its own name.
A power ballad? I disagree. It's too up-tempo. Power ballads are slower-tempo, romantic rock songs to which people often "slow dance". "These Dreams" is definitely a power ballad.
So much that is great in that song. Love the extended intro that they do in that live version, and also the outro, which is probably a little better in the studio version.
I love the harmony guitar solos, there are a lot of this in the 70s many bands had multiple guitars drums bass sometimes two keyboardists created lots of layering in the music great fills. Sadly missing in more recent stuff. Always enjoy your reactions Biss
