@@jacktheeurocarguy what kind of bullshit is that? There are german cars, bmw-s included, that can be maintained for cheap, and non-germans that can ramp up the bills very fast. And when it breaks, it can easily total the car...so umm, yeah, owning one of these makes no sense whatsoever unless you like to gamble.
the name of the transmission is misleading. a normal sequential transmission is dog engagement with a groove cut selector shaft. It is cross gate (every change goes through neutral) operation just like a manual transmission. The SMG has hydraulic actuators for direct shift without going to neutral like Ferrari’s and is synchromesh. The operation is sequential but that is true for normal automatics and double clutch as well. A better name, idk, single clutch robotized direct shift SRD :) the most amazing thing is the SMG system does its own double-clutching - that is, blipping the throttle to match engine speed to the transmission speed to make shifts smoother - when downshifting. And it does it much faster than any driver could do manually with a standard manual transmission. That means when downshifting it crosses through neutral but it doesn’t matter, the upshifts need to be quick. Double clutching preserves the synchronizers and having a computer doing this virtually means the least amount of wear possible. Bottom line, it would be very difficult to choose between this and a manual.

Replace? Maintain more like it. If you know cars and can do a majority of the work I'd have to disagree with your statement. Even if you have to have someone else do the work, for $5K on top of your purchase price (which is way less than the $30k for a new motor) you can prevent catastrophic failure. Also being a horrible owner is a good way to shorten the life of any car.
@@gulgul2006 I'm not saying they aren't amazingly high performing motors, the rod bearings tend to fail though. It's an inherent issue along with vanos failure. I know about these cars pretty well, major failure of either can decimate components which could require a replacement. I'm not saying it will, I'm saying it could, and when you're buying it second hand, which we all are, you have to be ready to drop 10 grand. And if you want to prevent that, tear down the bottom end and address the problem, and rebuild your entire motor. Either way, these are ticking time bombs. Spectacular fun though until they do blow up.

Looking at a 2007 m6 with around 62k miles on it, anything I should look for durring the test drive? Or ask the dealer for specific things
Ashark7773 Gaming oil leaks, vanos rattles, smg should shift quick, if not there could be an expensive smg issue. Then any other normal car stuff!
I got 645ci n62 V8 4.4 SMG. Has 164k I'm looking to trade for m6 6 speed or 650i 6 speed.. done with smg..lol
Soon as I close on my house with garage I’m getting a M6 off car guru ❤
And hide it until first day of summer
E92 M3 is legendary FR
Shouldn't have sold the car bro 😂. We will do an M5 next time.
Great video
Is this car reliable?
If looked after properly then yes. Still fairly expensive to run though as you'd expect
No. But it’s worth it
Can you tell me what oil it was that you are using?
Akash Chandrashekar motorad 880090 192f thermostat with redline 5w-50 oil. That’s what keeps these motors alive forever!!! And gives you a few extra ponies.
@@jacktheeurocarguy you sure you shouldn't be using 10w60 fully synthetic oil???
After watching the video I agree and disagree on the oil viscosity..but I hope it lasts well for you..get a Blackstone oil report done to check the wear on the bearings..contaminates in the oil will flag up and give you early warnings if your rod bearings are worn...I used to own a bmw m6 here in the UK..had it for 3 years...had alotnof work carried out..if you want any advice messge me
dan wal i had a tiny bit of metal in the oil after 29k miles, all running 10w60. After 3k miles on 5w50, no metal AT ALL. Follow Troy Jeup on Instagram, all the proof you need is on his page!
@@jacktheeurocarguy 👍👍👍😎 enjoy the M6...I will be getting another next year..unfortunately we cannot get the manual here..stuck with the nasty jerky SMG...worst gearbox I've ever experienced..but hey some things in life are worth putting up with...😎

Sorry I only have the 2006 bmw 650i convertible :/
Everyone that I know that has owned one has had major engine problems. Great driving cars but pretty garbage mechanically. I wouldn't recommend one of these to anyone who isnt willing to replace the motor as soon as they buy it.
