  • Using the previous generation of FMVSS 301 Standards, the FMVSS 301R is a Full-Overlap rear crash test at 30 Mph (48 Km/h) with 50th Percentile Male dummies. This crash test was performed at Mobility Systems in Inglewood, California on 07/13/1989.
Both occupants are uninstrumented 50th percentile Male Hybrid II ATDs. (No occupant readings)
Results: Fail - Fuel leakage exceeded 5 oz. immediately following impact, a static rollover was not performed due to apparent non-compliance.
An accurate reading of stoddard that leaked from the vehicle was not obtained, however, 62oz. were collected post-test. (From the beginning of the collection period.)

Even for 1989, that's atrocious. Most midsize sedans even in the late 1970s could keep the occupant compartment intact in a rear impact at just 30, yet this has major damage to the occupant compartment. Even at 35, pretty much every other vehicle of the same size and era did significantly better than this.
This did as badly as a typical subcompact hatchback from the late '70s. And those were half the weight, had no trunk, and were 10 years older.
We give the Ford Pinto grief, but the 1977-1980 models, after the fix, actually passed this test. This did about as badly as the infamous exploding 1971-1976 Pintos. On a design that was 17 years newer, not to mention significantly larger.

Agreed - at 2:05 it looks like the trunk is pushed forwards (not collapsing as it should), while the cabin acts as the crumple zone...

@@runepedersenDK Indeed, the back didnt crumble it looks like it is just pushed into the occupant compartment.

@@runepedersenDK I noticed that too, terrible design. Also, the asymmetrical deformation.

@@markushallo9060 We got them over here in the States, I think they were first sold in the late 1950s. They were pulled in 1991 because of sales that had been plummeting for several years, in part due to poor safety.

1:01 How did they manage to misspell Peugeot on the label when the rear badge is almost directly above it?

When these were new, I thought they looked like what a larger smoother Corolla could be. The Mi16 we got in the US with the 150hp and manual was semi-badass. This test needed that trunk mounted wing for extra strength.

I remember well how even German motor journalists praised the Peugeot 405 (and they usually praise just domestic manufactures) as the French Mercedes...
Well - hardly any public crash tests then 😯

@@Timico1000 In English: in 1991, the ADAC did a 50 kph, 50% offset crash test on midsize cars such as the Mercedes 190, BMW 3 Series, VW Passat, Audi 80, and competitors. The 405 and Ford Sierra were the worst performers, due to extreme steering column movement, although they looked okay from the outside. Results are in ADAC Motorwelt 9/91.
