  • Today we would like to introduce one of our volunteers, Roger Wilkins. Roger has been a volunteer guide at the RAF Museum #London since 2012, but previously he was in the #RAF.
Roger joined the RAF as a National Serviceman and was the youngest RAF pilot to take part in the Queen's coronation in 1953. He saw action in the Radfan Campaign in Aden, flying 130 ground attack missions and served in the RAF for over 19 years in four front line squadrons: Nos. 1, 63, 43 and 2.
He flew the de Havilland Vampire, Gloster Meteor, BAC Lightning and the Hawker #Hunter, all of which are on display in London’s Hangar 3. Our Hawker Hunter, which Roger flew, even has his name on its fuselage.
Recently we got Roger back into ‘his’ Hunter after more than 50 years. It was a bit tricky getting in, but once in the seat, Roger was in high spirits: ‘If you fuel it up, I could probably fly it today!’. It was an absolute privilege to film Roger talking about what it was like to fly the Hunter and having him share his stories.
If, after viewing our video, you would like to meet Roger in person to hear some more of his stories, he usually volunteers as a guide at the RAF Museum London. Why not join his tour, while Roger takes you through his time flying the Hunter and other Cold War jets?
