As of pinning this comment, nearly 20,000 people have viewed this video. If you're joining us for the first time, I'd like to acknowledge a couple of missteps in the video to preempt any further comments-there are already over 100 mentioning them.
At two moments during the video, I inadvertently speak during the performance. I recognize the significance of Ren's words and ask for your understanding. Rest assured, in each instance where I overlapped with the performance, I've gone back to ensure no word was missed. So, before you consider adding to the comment pile, please continue watching; everything gets addressed. Thank you for your understanding!

Ren fans are intense... 😂 (in the nicest way possible) Such a great performance. I'm sure that by now, you've heard the full story about Ren's health battle, and mental health battle, which he so beautifully expresses in this song, and many of his other songs. Thank you for your honest reaction. I'm thoroughly enjoying your content 💛 As a Christian, I have often felt that I can't talk about my music preferences with other Christians, just because I don't really listen to pure gospel all day long 🙈 It's nice to find someone like you here!

Ren is completely self taught in guitar acpustic, base, piano and drums. He spent many years bedridden with misdiagnosed Lyme disease which has damaged his brain ,organs and body and left him with serious medical issues. He crosses all genres and speaks for the chronically ill. He is definitely a wonderful guitarist.
    Ren is agnostic but
Believes that both darkness and light exist in all of us.

His collaborations are wonderful, and I think it is valuable to know why he does what he does, and how he does it, and how he helps build us up from scratch, creating communities to help build each other up.
His rising tide philosophy is evident everywhere; every decision, every word, even a hip hop battle or his excitement over somehow charting then clear hope for the ultimate Rick Rock and come in at #2 to a beloved hero. He wasn't expecting to get #1.
I was "gone" when first encountered the old health vlog upload released before Hi Ren. It was after a many hour video on MCAS in EDS, and I was already reflecting on the thousands of times I experienced misdiagnosis.

Please check out the Tale of Jenny and Screech the full video next the 13:32 mins version. as an FYI this video is a one shot live video and Ren does these a lot which just shows even how much more talented he is. This took only 4 tries to get this masterpiece. Ren has had a hard life it took 10 yrs for him to get diagnosed w/Lyme disease and in that 10yrs he suffered unspeakable pain and suffering. The pain caused his psychosis and he was bedridden for most of his 20's and he also suffers PTSD from his pain/torture from Lyme disease and being undiagnosed for so long. Ren is an Agnostic who chooses to believe in the human race and our ability to do better. I hope you continue down the Ren rabbit hole there is a huge catalogue of music to fall in love with!!!

In the future, Be sure to back up and listen again to the lyrics you missed when you talked over them. For all of Rens music and videos, be sure to really listen carefully. His lyrics whether singing or rapping are important. some of his stuff is silly but most are important. Oh and sorry I do love your reaction, great insight. I am going to be 75 in a couple weeks. Maternally raised a christian, my mother was a devote catholic, she varied though and searched other religions, always curious, near her death she was more into God and her first beliefs. I could not and would not ever tell her she was wrong or our thoughts were different, or how I felt of her belief, it would have broken her heart. Over the years from my experiences I lost the christian, or any religious ideas. I went to agnostic when a teenager, and now I am atheist from my 20's to now. It is what it is, my life, my experiences, my wins and gains or losses have shaped me. Not religion or ideas from religions. I watch and listen to Ren no matter what direction he goes with his music because I like the variance in his lyrics. How he feels and sees things. I have no problem when hearing some individuals talking about their faith or what they believe, I will only be upset when it seems to be pushed on me or trying to convince me that I am the wrong one. As long as I am still a kind person, love life, people and nature, I think I am doing ok, better than ok. except for some old age physical issues my mind no longer dwells on disturbing issues.

This is the song that made Ren go viral. He's made several great but quite heavy songs, like Jenny and Skreetch, How to be me, Su!cide, Chalk Outlines, Money Game. But he's album Sick Boi (that made it to #1 in Britain, an incredible feat for an independent artist!) is all rap. Some songs are just him having fun and flexing, with a lot of flow switches and (sometimes very dirty) word play.

Your reaction and analysis were fantastic! You’re about to get a ton of information about Ren dumped on you by Ren fans!😅 Your musical knowledge was really interesting to hear! I find it so interesting to see how we all interpret things differently though our own beliefs and world views. I am a huge Ren fan and a Christian, which seems to be less common in Ren’s fan base. The first time I saw Hi Ren, it was a lot to take in. I recognized the talent, it was powerful, but parts were very jarring and it took some time for me to process them. Ren calls himself agnostic but enjoys the stories of religion. He has a lot of religious and spiritual themes in his music. And he speaks a lot on mental health. Ren is very intentional in his music but he also leaves a lot of things open to interpretation. I see Hi Ren as an internal battle with self doubt and mental health, as well as a spiritual battle. I can pull a lot of truth out of it from a spiritual perspective that maybe Ren didn’t intend. I can really see God using Ren to bring people together, make them think, and start some interesting conversations.

The line (or one of them) which many miss is.
"Ferocious, persistent, imortal like you, we're a coin minted different sides"
    ..
Its Ren recognizing *his* dark side.
    (Not "A" dark side)
He's already given us the clue with
"l am you, you are me, I am you Ren"
    .
*His* "demon" gained control, pushed him to the edge.
(It was largely a combination of misdiagnosis and incorrect medication.... 🤷🏼‍♀️)
    .
But then we see older, calm, reflective Ren, (who we learn later, has "learned to relax")
    .
He's learned to "stand on his own two feet" and proclaims that he is a force to be reckoned with when he sings at the top of his lungs that since he has *been* through more than many will endure and not only survived, but, going back to my original point, he *Recognises* his dark side, and has learned to live WITH it.
    .
We ARE (all) "coins minted different sides", dark and light.
Ren, having seen both his sides can reconcile their existence and his dark side will not win.
    .
He's not making excuses, it's HIS. He owned it.
    .
    That's why I respect him.
    .
    No excuses.

For REN, this was truly his reality. Ren had misdiagnosed Lyme disease for 7 years by conventional doctors who deemed him mentally ill, but when patients are experiencing neurological symptoms, they very often become misdiagnosed. Lyme disease can present itself as many neurological conditions including Acute Transverse Myelitis[3], Ptosis[4], Seizures, and Chronic Fatigue[1] and these symptoms can be often misdiagnosed or deemed psychosomatic. Second is dealing with the symptoms of Lyme neuroborreliosis, these neurological symptoms often leave patients feeling drained and debilitated as they begin losing their quality of life. Over time, patients find themselves unable to do the things they love as they struggle to get ahead of their progressing symptoms.

As a musician myself with intermediate theory knowledge, I really appreciate your music theory insight on this. I've watched a fair few reactions, and was expecting you mostly to talk about the theological aspects. But you're spot on with the diminished to augmented, the minor to major switches. Most musicians (including me) wouldn't have even spotted them, but I'm pretty sure Ren put them in there intentionally. So fair play to you for catching onto yet another Ren easter egg.

When I look at this live performance, I see it as the intro and start of creativity up thru the yodel. It is then interrupted by doubt, and the proverbial curtains part, and we witness the internal conversation between the 2 sides. it culminates in doubt declaring it's existence is in everyone and is everywhere and an individual is helpless to prevent that. Then hope steps up and helps return Ren to be distant and still, and states his ever persistence and presence as well. "We are coin of two different sides." The creativity is then allowed to continue (back to the yodels). This time, however, both sides are present, as indicated by the set lights flashing (they were not in the first yodel). The poem at the end is part of the performance in every version I've heard of it.
What I get most from that poem is the first line: "When I was 17 years old, I shouted out into an empty room, into a blank canvas, that I would defeat the forces of evil." I feel this shows how we do not start with the life experiences to understand the implications of creating balance within ourselves. We have naive expectations of black and white, good and bad, positive and negative. Meanwhile, we miss the importance of recognizing grayness. "We must not forget, that we are human beings."
My final thoughts are that navigating through life is a balancing act of that coin of 2 different sides. The expectation of either extreme (such as total salvation or absolute corruption) are deceptive, in that there will be internal struggles in everyone's lives at some point in time. Growth, development, and teachings are tools to give the individual to create that balance, allowing movement forward, rather than any other direction.

O..M..G (no pun intended but very apt). I have watched countless reactions to Hi Ren but your's stands out for me by a mile. You've picked up on nuances most others haven't which I thought I were imagining, I also think the little glance at the camera when he says that things are falling into place belies his need for validation about that as if he knows how he should feel and what he should say but isn't totally convinced. As a lifelong atheist I love your religious insight and interpretation which for me demonstrates the common ground regardless of type of faith or lack of it. You will get lots of recommendations to do next and you should most definitely do them all but I think Eden would be a very interesting one for you (it's not even a song!). Personally I think people commenting on the existence and merits of a god/gods are missing the point entirely, God bless you brother and welcome to the world of Ren. Peace, then Love.

Ren's said that he's not religious but that he enjoys employing religious imagery to illustrate his thoughts. Imagery from many different religions, not just Christianity. If you notice, he said 'gods' at the end.
This is about the accepting the truth that darkness is part of all of us and the World around us. We can't banish it. It's NOT about the victory of the light. It's accepting that dark thing will occur.and dark thoughts will come but they help shape who we are and the darkest clouds really do have a silver lining but that treasure is only reachable via the cloud. Anyone who examines their life with any real objectivity, can see this to be true, even though it's an unpalatable truth. However, acceptance of this fact helps to mitigate the dark and to make life that little easier. Btw, although I agree, I'm pretty much paraphrasing what Ren himself has said about the meaning of the song. It's also not about chronic illness, or mental illness, it's about the human condition generally. Of course, this is art, so all interpretations are valid. I'm just relaying what Ren's said about the song and it's meanings, to give you an idea of where he was coming from. Btw, Ren's suffering has been much much greater than the little nod at the end would suggest. Even today he's in constant pain and tires really easily, plus much else, that I'm sure others will tell you about. At his worst he was bedridden, unable to properly sleep, due to constant, unrelenting, chronic pain. Too tired to read socialise, watch tv, to participate in life, for 7 years!
However that pain and suffering also inspired intensive self-reflection and a similarly intensive gaze at the World around him, bringing some wisdom. It's also inspired a lot of his compositions, which in turn have brought him, and others, joy and even a certain amount of peace. :)

Very insightful and interesting reaction. I do think that Ren's inclusion of lyrics that are religious aren't meant to be taken quite so literally, but more for imagery and metaphorical purpose, to demonstrate the eternal struggle of the duality of human nature. But we all view things through the lens of our individual perspectives. You view this as a musician who is Christian, and I view this as an agnostic who is a writer and majored in psychology. So us coming to different conclusions is really no surprise, particularly when it comes to art, which by its nature is open to interpretation. Ren is also a very talented lyricist whose word choices are deliberate and often have more than one meaning, so varying interpretations to his work are understandable and valid. But I think we can definitely agree this is a moving video created by an extraordinarily talented person. Also, I subbed, because even if I don't agree with your interpretation, I find it interesting to hear. And I watched one of your FiR reactions previously, so I know I enjoy your videos. :)
Now, a little more on Ren, which might be helpful should you choose to go down the renegade rabbit hole (which I encourage!): the autoimmunity he mentioned comes from a tragic backstory. He contracted lyme disease I think about 8 years ago (not sure exactly), but it went undiagnosed until recently, during which time the disease managed to do a lot of damage to his body. This also caused major problems with him mentally, which lead him down a difficult road with mental illness. He still has chronic health problems but is finally getting some effective treatment. He managed to hit the UK Number 1 last year with his album "Sick Boi," all without a label backing him. He likes to do a lot of one-take videos, and "Hi Ren" is one of them (he had a mic on during the video, I don't think you saw it though). I know I relate to Ren because I've had a similar medical misdiagnosis that was difficult, but I believe his genuine openness draws people in as effectively as his talent even if they haven't shared that experience, which has created a very vocal and supportive fanbase. I mean, I don't write literal essay-length youtube comments for just anyone! :D Ren is something special though, and I think if you check out more of his music, you'll be pleasantly surprised and often moved. Cheers!

In this song the use of personification of evil relates to the base theme of "doubt and hope".

Yes, The tale of Jenny and Screech the full trilogy is outstanding but I would like to see you react to Blind eyed The Music Crowns version because you will appreciate the musical complexity and you can also delight in the beautiful falsetto of Sam Tompkins, who he met at a young age on the streets of Brighton when Sam was struggling to make his voice heard.

He's really just using biblical imagery, demon on the shoulder, Revelation type pictures to represent his dark side and the angelic/hope for his super light side. However, his message is about internal balance, the light side doesn't win the argument, everything remains balanced. It's really just a story of the struggle of mental illness with its extreme highs and lows. I'm not sure his religious background but I believe he's either atheist or a deist.

He said it in his Eden video...agnostic. He believes in a higher power but hasn't got the specifics. An atheist believes in nothing.

Liked your interesting thoughts and musical knowledge
Im a person of faith since I was 17 but prefer not to be labelled and have deconstructed from religion over the last 15 years
very much in the Wm Paul Young style
I watched this a year ago and have stayed for Ren's unique sometimes challenging and very human take on things
His musical abilities are so diverse its been a very good year of enjoying music for the first time in decades

You know thinking about Ren attributing his hallucinations to demons and such iconography makes a lot of sense to me because I have hallucinated due to medication starting when I was a toddler, and let me tell you, going to a hospital for something only to be given medicine that turned your parents into monsters right before your eyes is quite the core memory to have as a kid. Now in my case this was sporadic through my life and I think the last time it happened I was in my late teens early 20s, so I can't imagine having it happen consistently for years on end. I respect that he's willing to bring it forward to discuss through his music.
