  • David Van Reybrouck is considered “one of the leading intellectuals in Europe” (Der Tagesspiegel) and is a pioneering advocate of participatory democracy. He founded the G1000 Citizens' Summit, and his work has led to trials in participatory democracy throughout Belgium and the Netherlands. He is also one of the most highly regarded literary and political writers of his generation; his most recent book, Congo: The Epic History of a People, won 19 prizes, sold 500,000 copies, and has been translated into a dozen languages. It was described as a “masterpiece” by the Independent and “magnificent” by the New York Times.

Hannah Arendt's singular statement at first I am human is a gift so great as to not be recognized. Not a female, not a Jew, not a German, not a Caucasian, not a liberal, not a conservative, not left handed, no adjective precedes human.

How can I create community if I'm told I'm not allowed to speak to my neighbor, because I Might insult them and they could sue me? People spend more time in some type of counseling seeking help, because they are afraid of the possibility of saying the wrong word at work, in social gatherings, etc., instead of spending that time getting to know their neighbors and creating community.

Democracy and equality are the same thing, namely everyone having equal control by virtue of owning equal wealth.
And so, as everyone has a different ability to produce wealth, the only solution is for everyone willing to keep only enough for a comfortable life.

the problem remains - a small country with few millions or a big one with many many millions ... no amount of equality can be achieved beyond a point, at best what we have in a very few rich nations. We as a species have gone way beyond the biophysical limits, and that means there's not enough for everyone, and even less in the future. So Amsterdam or Timbuktu, we have reached overshoot.

No decline of the labor movement. It is instead rising. I grew up in a working class family where no one has yet painted their face red, white and blue. Instead they are active as labor attorneys or organizers doing some outstanding work. If you stop stereotyping us, you might find out what we are doing. We: means people of all types of backgrounds.

Watched countless similar presentations. High and mighty on democracy. Zero mention of basic needs of now 8 billion, Hannah Arendt would be shocked to learn we're at 8 billion in such a short time. In addition to no discussion of 8 billion there's no talk of the 80 million net new precious humans joining us annually. Of the requirement for the equivalent of one shiny new New York City worth of infrastructure etc etc etc EVERY SINGLE MONTH. YET we're on the same planet that struggled to feed 3 billion. To get here from there we've foolishly burnt through countless resources including land which is now degraded. Water that's increasingly unusable or depleted. At a time when we can with a few clicks watch much of the world in real time. See disasters as they happen. Watch helplessly as ice melts, water rise, greenhouse gases spike to 51 billion tons annually we do nothing. We talk high and mighty while doing little to nothing to assure that our only home in an endless universe does not become another dead rock whizzing around one of countless suns

Not all white working class men are painting their faces. Stop the media brain washing. My stepfather was a so called White (German born) working class man and an intellectual. Recently, I met a White middle class woman who is a senior in college. The first thing she said to me was not hi, but "I can't read, write, spell or do math." She was bragging. She is an art history major who doesn't quite know who Andy Warhol was. However, she is good at snapping "You can't say that," and attacking people for their sex and race, which is PC to her. Stop stereotyping, stop Uneducating people, stop being brainwashed and by all means stop social bulling and calling that being PC.
