Flemish author and poet David Van Reybrouck denounces the Western voting system in his book, "Against Elections". He says that in Europe we are suffering from democratic fatigue syndrome and warns that the EU could be over in less than a year. Instead of elections, he would like to see a lottery system: picking a random selection of citizens and getting them to help governments do their work. David Van Reybrouck explains his proposals to FRANCE 24.

I like this guys idea of random sampling. Lots of benefits few drawbacks. Something needs to change in our political systems, the politicians are just vote hungry and will all too often fail to do the right thing just because they will lose power or position.

Be interesting if companies did this too. The seats on the board of directors would be a lottery from amongst its shareholders.

I think if we had 12 people like on a jury that were voire dire'd (checked for bias) with a pro-counsel (person arguing for a bill) and a anti-counsel (person arguing against a bill), mediated by a magistrate who can act as neutral referee and non-partisan information. Each jury is chosen for one bill (proposed law) alone. A unanimous vote would be required. Bills would be based off initiatives (signatures from citizens) and interest groups (signatures or membership number counting).

Just come across this! For a first encounter with this fresh and innovative approach, I really think it's time for a rethink on how to practice and so preserve demicracy

the english cover unfortunately used sarcasm against Trump, it is bad for propagation of the authors idea. Sortition it is a method that left and right can agree on.

Democracy fatigue is real. Seven years after this broadcast, it seems more urgent. Elections are a bad idea. They are fancy popularity contests.

I think it’d work if there were opportunities for everyone to participate. In a nation of over 300 million, it’s hard to believe everyone has a great shot. But if you made it federal, meaning people who could serve in the Federal Assembly would need to have served in a State Assembly, that might work better. It also means you get regular people who are more interested in policy on a federal level than on a state level.

While he gives a interesting idea, just terrible in words and testing especially in days and years of coming unrest

The unrest wont end without a change in status quo.

Tattersail but this is illogical change to the status quo just as the female reporter saying. Unpolitical citizens are worthless to have in that room
