I got top surgery last week so I have some advice too! 1. I had soooo much trapped wind after I woke up from the anaesthetic that I couldn’t eat anything without burping or vomiting, that was for the whole first day so just expect some discomfort in that regard? 2. Make sure you poop before surgery, makes life a lot easier in the long run 3. Button up shirts!! 4. Take the painkillers they tell you to take otherwise you’re gonna regret it lol 5. Hydrate yourself, you may have to pee more but it makes life so much easier being hydrated 6. Mentally prepare yourself beyond everything because you’re going through a major change in your life, it’s going to take time to adjust, especially with the pain you’re going through I hope some of my tips help someone, I wish I’d known a lot of these things before hand!!
And in contrast I had top surgery last week and I had none of the same problems as you! It's very very different from person to person, more than you'd ever believe. I have a sensitive stomach so i thought for sure I'd be throwing up after surgery but i was pleasantly surprised
They might have put an anti-emetic in your IV if you told them that you have a sensitive stomach. I really stressed the nausea problem to my surgeon and he hooked me up.
I'm 13 years old and my parents are totally anti LGBT and I REALLY want to get top surgery in a few years. But my parents don't even buy me a binder! Fml
Regarding the question, why Grace usually says Ash instead of pronouns. It's something i do as well. My spouse is Nonbinary and they usually prefer singular them. However there exists no singular them in german. "them" basically is the same as "she" and my darling is afab, so it would feel wrong. That's why i started saying their name or "my spouse" or "my partner" when refering to them A LOT. I just prefer doing this then accidentaly outing them to narrowminded jerks or misgendering them. My 2 cents out. Don't know if its partially the same for Grace.
Maik Sowinski actually people created some gender neutral pronouns. I looked it up because I wanted to talk about my partner at the time, who uses they/them or she/her pronouns, and also because I wondered if there was something I liked. But because German is more grammatically complex they were really difficult to use and felt super unorganic. Like, if someone in my life used them I would really try and learn how to use them, but for me personally they wouldn‘t be practical and sound weird? Because there are so many and not really a standard one, that is easy to use, and that even people outside queer circles can understand, like with they/them. Maybe we should invent a pronoun that doesn’t have to be declined! It would not only defy the gender binary but also grammar:D
emptythecan this would be great. But from what i could gather there isn't really something that most enbys could agree on. I thought xir was in discussion for a while.
It sucks that she and they are the same, I wonder if some non binary afabs or just non binary in general people don't mind it because the verb makes it different, e.g. sie heißt (she is called) vs. sie heißen (they are called) because even though we imply a singular they in English we still use the verb form of the plural they. Tbf it would be cool if each language could just adopt a new pronoun for 3rd person singular English because I know plenty of people who struggle to remember to use they because it sounds like they're talking about more than one person e.g. xyz *is* called rather than they *are* called and the equivalent in German/any language with the same problems (xyz being used here in substitute of a pronoun because I didn't want to pick one already kind of in use and I'm not creative enough to come up with something else)
dreamflight6000 i was looking through the comments and saw your post I thought it was super funny. I also follow you and your families videos. Threw me off to see you ok this videos but it’s nice.
I’m also non-binary and this video is awesome because I’m considering getting too surgery in the future. I’ve got a doctors appointment next week to hopefully get a referral to a gender therapist. I love your journey Ash. You’re one of the few youtubers who makes me feel like I’m valid as a non-binary bisexual 💕
Grace said 'they/them' multiple times before Ash said anything about pronouns, so obviously Grace does use pronouns whenever it's natural to do so... What do people mean when they say there's a lack of pronouns? =/ Obviously it's one thing to talk about someone to a third party, but when the person is right there with you and you're also talking to them as part of the conversation, it makes sense to say 'you' in reference to them or use their name when it makes sense (like 'well for Ash it was' rather than 'well for them it was' when Ash is part of the convo and right there, y'know?) I think Grace speaks quite naturally in terms of referring to Ash personally, to the camera, to differentiate, and as a third person reference. Shoving pronouns in for the sake of it just sounds weird to me, tbh.
I got top surgery 2 weeks ago (DI without drains) and recovery was so easy for me! I still have the binder on for another week but i am able to reach for things, never took any pain meds or slept in a weird schedule. Even when I got home 1 hour post op I sat on the couch and watched tv till midnight and was able to get up myself and sleep normally. So my top surgery recovery was so easy I am v v lucky!
That's awesome, congrats! One other big thing that I'd suggest is to have lots of really smooth, soft foods for afterwards. After my surgery one of the worst things I remember is just how sore my throat was from being intubated... Even the applesauce they gave me to eat before I was discharged just hurt too much. All of that, paired with being a bit nauseous from the anesthesia... I honestly more or less survived on vanilla Ensure shakes for a solid week 😂
Make sure you rush order a binder with Velcro side on it, or a waist trainer. You'll thank me when your medical binder stops smelling nice. You need some baby wipes cause you don't get to bathe for about two weeks. Q tips need to be on your list as well as bactine spray, neosporine with pain killer in it. One of the back pillows with the arms should definitely be on your list as well as medical gauze, and the weird pillow looking gauze in you are having nipple graphs. Anything that weights more than a phone or a PS4 controller is right out the window. Your drains need to be checked and emptied regularly, and just over all don't think that you can wake up and go chase the world. Your going to stink, your going to want to have a shower, your going to feel like you have been hit by an 18 wheeler. But that first breath you take out of surgery with all that weight off of your chest is so worth it.
Ohh boyyyy the pain the pain A little background: I have Ehlers-danlos syndrome, same as your friend Annie Segarra. The "pillows of varying firmness" suggestion is my liiife. I dislocate my ribs easily, and this has been especially true since my foot surgery (a fusion) on the 18th. I have had a rib dislocated for the last ten. days. I have two memory foam pillows, three extra firm, three regular, a lumbar support foam thing, several throw pillows, a body pillow, and a bunch of soft throw blankets that I can stuff into nooks and crannies, like under my neck. If I sleep the slightest bit wrong (the "right" way is a moving target) I will wake up with dislocations or a migraine. I have a migraine about once a week. I am so sorry you've had such bad back pain from the surgery 😢😢 I hope your pain is being treated sufficiently. If you have any questions that have not been explained fully, or pain that is new or more intense than normal, please talk to your doctor or nurses and advocate for yourself. Don't put yourself through that pain like you did with the bandages! I'll be honest, I have an extremely high pain tolerance, but I would have called the doctor the first time it felt uncomfortably tight. If I've learned anything, it's that unnecessary pain can be very dangerous!
I was reading this and thinking, “wow, this person just had the same surgery as my friend Rebekah! And also has rib locations!” and it took me a long ass time to put it together lol (hello!!)
Aw I'm sorry your back was so sore! In future, put pillows under and between your knees! Also migraines, I get them a lot. Cold and dark is the way to go. Oh! And if you're sitting and your back is sore, sit on a pillow(if on hard surface) and if you're sitting on a couch or bed, put a pillow just under your butt, not all the way but enough to prop you up man a little forward. 👍
This video was posted the day before I got a mansculpting liposuction, and my experience has been similar! It's true that at first everything is too numb to feel much and it gets worse once the numbness wears off.
I've been forgetting Ash's name, at a rate of approximately every 15-20 seconds, thus the frequent use is helpful. Wait it's Greg right? Nope, Ash. It's Ash for sure. 😉
I watched so many videos before my top surgery last year and that was helpful, so I know this video will help others! Although it may have been awkward because all 3 of us were exhausted, tired, and hungry....I was glad I was brave and said hi to you folks at the airport in Philly. Like I said in person, KEEP MAKING videos to help educating people. We all need more of your voices, stories, and experiences. Love from this FTM dude from Oregon ;)
I learned to sleep on my back a few weeks before a surgery for which I knew I would have to. It's just a few nights where it feels weird, but when there's nothing else to worry about it's totally fine. And once I was on the route of recovery being comfortable on my back was a huge relief!
I've had other kinds of surgery and this is basically what to expect from surgery in general if anyone is wondering. The 1st day is the best day is SOOO true and it tricks me every time!
I'm sure this video is going to help a lot of people! Also may I take the time to comment on how loving your dog is with both of you and how sweet you are to each other. What a loving family.
Ugh, migraines are the absolute worst. I've had quite a few. I'm so sorry you had to experience one. In case you get another, the best thing to do is to go into a cool, dark, preferably silent room. Lying on cold tiles or wood is something I have found to be very helpful. Best wishes to you two. Lots of love from Ireland!
I do remember my back hurting so much, I was so uncomfortable. I couldn’t sleep on my sides and I’m a side sleeper. I hated every second of top surgery and I would never go through it again lol! Thank God this video was made for other people.
I'm (finallyyyy) getting my top surgery done in less than two months and this video is helpful! I"m really anxious about having to sleep on my back. Thanks for the feedback :D
I went to massage school and they say not to use your thumbs. The knuckles or sometimes even the arm. It might help your own discomfort while you try to comfort your honey. Good luck and please feel better.🌸
So I'm gonna say some things I wish I knew before, but keep in mind I had periareolar and I live in Belgium so I'm just speaking from my experience. 1. All the youtube videos I watched had these reveals and so I thought I only got to see my chest a couple weeks post op but when I was in the awakening room just after surgery and I woke up my first instinct was to look at my nipples and I just did it. there were no bandages or anything so I could see everything. I only had to put two dressings and a binder on when I was in the recovery room with my mom. And even after that I was able to see my chest everyday because a nurse came to take care of it. 2. The first few days nothing was swollen, red or bruised but after a week the skin below my nipple started looking red and it hurt. I thought it was infected so we called the surgeon and I was immediately put on antibiotics and in the evening we went to see the surgeon but there were no signs of infection. He explained to me that they not only take away the mammary gland but also a ligament and that's what was causing the pain. He said that that was totaly normal. 3. Don't expect everything to look right the moment after your surgery. If you're like me you panic about every little change but the recovery takes up to three months, so before that don't worry to much about how it looks. 4. It's okay to take your binder off sometimes (if your surgeon told you so). The doctors did tell me that but I wanted to be safe and kept it on for two weeks before taking it off. Just take it off for like an hour and breathe. 5. This one won't be for everyone but it happened to me so it might happen to you too. My surgeon told me at first that I had to wear the binder for six weeks and I also couldn't exercise for that period of time. But after my consultation after my surgery he said that it was healing pretty well and said that I only had to wear it for four weeks :). I'm just saying this in case you like me are really not looking forward to wearing that thing for so long (mind you I had surgery in the summer, so not the ideal time to wear two layers). 6. Speaking of summer, don't be dumb like me and have your surgery in the summer when you have exams. I had surgery June sixth and my first exam was June seventh. I was able to post pone my exam but I still had to take an exam on June ninth. This put a lot of stress on me because I wasn't able to study much and I could barely get to my school. 7. If you had drains like me I'm just going to say it but that shit hurts so much to take out. I read somewhere that it feels tingly. It doesn't. I hurts so so much, but I found a trick to lesser the pain. Take a deep breath and when the nurse pulls it out you blow on the top of your hand. Also I thought the piece of drain that was in me was small but it's about as large as where it is put in you to your nipple. I don't want to scare anyone but I think it's better to know the truth than sitting in pain and complete shock after the first one and having to do a second. 8. Next the pain medication. Do not wait until you are in pain again to take your medication. Have a routine! That way you are never in pain :). 8. Lastly as I said I am pretty paranoid so I didn't move my arms for one bit during the healing process. So when I could move my arms above my shoulders again I wasn't able to because they hadn't moved for a month. You can't move your arms a lot but please do it a little bit, just make sure they don't go above your shoulders and you should be fine. Also when you can start moving a bit just take it slow like Cameron said in the video like for example don't start running right away but start with walking.
💕 I’m now 5 days post top surgery. I totally agree with the rollercoaster ride. Pain hasn’t been that bad, except I feel the stitches pull occasionally when I get out of bed or move too quickly. It’s s great reminder not to do too much too soon though.🤪 Pillows are my friends right now as well as my medical reacher/grabber. Especially for picking things up that I drop on the floor or can’t reach, as I have T-Rex arms. 🦖 Also, my back scratcher has come in handy as the ace wrap itches like crazy on my back.
I tool for someone who doesn’t have a partner (or who does have a partner that just doesn’t have the power) is a trigger point cane. It’s a great self massage tool for every day life. (Side note : licensed massage therapist who definitely promotes this tool)
LandInTheTree they're apparently cool because I know a few people w/ them, but I canNOT figure out how to get the angles to do between my shoulder blades! lol or really, at all...
Katherine K try using a tennis ball or a lacrosse ball between a wall and your shoulder blade area ... squat and move it around putting more pressure against the ball against the wall. Try moving your arm around as well - when you raise your arm up it moves that “shoulder blade” and you might be able to get into those muscles under it ... or if you can get an actual massage from a professional lol
I can relate to a certain extent. Last year I had a breast reduction sergury, the pillow thing, I can relate to all the way. I couldn't lift my arms so I couldn't shower. Had to have someone help me with the drains and that that kind of stuff.
Pain from any surgery can be so weird....I had my tonsils out in July and one of my biggest areas of pain was my ears...I slept in my recliner for about a week.
Elaina Smith if you’re going to get top surgery (or any surgery, for that matter) you can ask your doctor about anti-nausea medication! some doctors give it to you regardless.
Ugh yeah the backpain is horrid, I wish I had thought of sleeping sitting up hugging pillows... I had to get up multiple times a night and getting up was very painful and I would have to walk around for a while to loosen my back up. The worst part for me was the drains though. I just smelled bad all the time and my cats kept almost stepping on them and it was excruciating getting the right side out the second most painful thing I've ever experienced (the first being a terrible flu I got some years back). We also should have practiced using an ace bandage beforehand cuz apparently my partner just did not know how to use one and the first time getting wrapped up after taking a shower had me crying from the anxiety of the person who is supposed to be taking care of me can't take care of me. I also vomited a lot the first day after surgery.
Recovery from surgery is a lot of ups and downs. I had adenomyosis (disease of the uterus) cured by a hysterectomy. Oh boy. The two days, I was in pain of course but I was SO happy to be cured that it just felt like I got beat up *a little* It was Day 3 that was rough. The next week adter that, also rough. 😖 No energy. The body takes time to come down from such high stress and when you are down, damn you are DOWN.
The tubes going in freaks me out. The thought of having thick tubes inside me makes me wanna faint. I'm a giant baby. But I think I might want top surgery one day. Can a tube just fall out of you? Ugh that whole part of it just freaks me out so much. Like, I feel llight headed just thinking about it.
You guys are the best I wish I had someone like Grace to take care of me . My back hurt the first few days but now I am so sore where I was cut open it’s infected and my armpits swell if I do more then I should . I took my binder off the first week because it hurt so bad .
I had surgery 2 weeks ago. I wish I knew that I'd be so bloated after that I'd look heavily pregnant for the next 9 days 😂😂 For me the worst pain was having to take off sticky dressings and tape off. Personally I felt very little pain other than that. I stopped pain killers the day after, and felt completely back to my normal self (walking around my house and stuff) 3 days after. A plus is that my sleeping has never been better, I think because I'm forced to stay to still 😂
Grace used 'them' several times before Ash even said anything, so I don't really understand where people are getting this idea.
koutashinji True. And honestly, I like it when Grace just speaks naturally and doesn’t force the pronoun political correctness.
Our best pronouns are our names! No one can assume them 😉
JustJ8 it would be hilarious if they did! Hey, Brian!
there's dead names tho! Calling somebody a deadname would probably be equal to that
grace using all the pronouns is a mood

Why be hateful when you could just be silent.

Them and Rose and Rosie are the best TH-cam couples by s long shot
Akkyz eww please no
Sammeee they are so adorable together.
Grace seems like such a good and supportive partner. I'm happy for Ash. You are a lovely couple
Best part - Grace describes zombie cooking then gives Ash "love you" eyes and kisses their neck. 😍
Next best:
Grace - Why don't you ever call me...
Ash - Noofulmooble?
Grace - Yeah! Why don't you ever do that?
Ash - I'm sorry, Noofulboogle.

Hey ash could you do a chest reveal?! I've been dying to see the results
Caleb Reilly they said they will when they feel more confident ^^
I love the love between these two. It's so obvious, you can just see it. Everyone needs this type of love and support.

I'm (finallyyyy) getting my top surgery done in less than two months and this video is helpful! I"m really anxious about having to sleep on my back. Thanks for the feedback :D
Five years later, how are you? if you feel comfortable sharing of course
Aww Grace is such a good caregiver it’s so amazing/sweet that they made ash meals in the middle of the night
This is freaking cute, you guy on camera are so sweet. Hope this is close to real life.
I remember that outro song from, like, when my mother first got a Macbook and I liked playing around on GarageBand. Nostalgia hit me in the face.
I love Echo!!! Amazing recommendation - all should go watch!
Ash is OFFICIALLY MY NEW PRONOUNS. AS/ASH. THANKS.
God bless you both. Glad to see you're feeling better you two are perfect together. 😍😘
Congratulations on your top surgery ♥️
I am getting a reduction, thank you for sharing
I went to massage school and they say not to use your thumbs. The knuckles or sometimes even the arm. It might help your own discomfort while you try to comfort your honey. Good luck and please feel better.🌸
Grace should start their own channel, I love their videos
It’s s great reminder not to do too much too soon though.🤪
Pillows are my friends right now as well as my medical reacher/grabber.
Grace was saying “they” “them” and “there” the whole beginning of the video. She was doing just fine the whole time.
“That’s what the people want” lol 😂
THANK YOU for sharing. Thank you❤
I LOVE Echo!!! I’ve never seen anyone else talk about her before. Neat
"Guard your lil heart" 😮❤
I had top sugery like 6 week ago with 16 years. I was the best and the same time most intimidating experience ever.
Using a car buffer, of all things, is actually pretty good for massaging.
They are super cute together!❤❤
I can relate to a certain extent. Last year I had a breast reduction sergury, the pillow thing, I can relate to all the way. I couldn't lift my arms so I couldn't shower. Had to have someone help me with the drains and that that kind of stuff.
Did y’all diy your headboard? Because I want it
Pain from any surgery can be so weird....I had my tonsils out in July and one of my biggest areas of pain was my ears...I slept in my recliner for about a week.
The puking part and the nausea scares me the most.
Elaina Smith if you’re going to get top surgery (or any surgery, for that matter) you can ask your doctor about anti-nausea medication! some doctors give it to you regardless.
same! i have a huge phobia of vomiting and when i heard that part i was like oh no
I don't wanna be bored or stretch my scars
This was so helpful because my boyfriend is soon about to do his top surgery and now I know what I have to get! Gonna buy aaaaall the massage thingies
I am recovering right now. This video is so true!
Digital drawing is hard! lol I love you guys you're both awesome never stop being yourselves, big hugs!
If your back still hurts i suggest the red Tiger Balm, it helps sooooooo much but a little goes a long way
watched this video the day before surgery. Now am 5 days post-op and... so itchy under this compression vest. thanks for giving a heads up on that :)
Recovery from surgery is a lot of ups and downs. I had adenomyosis (disease of the uterus) cured by a hysterectomy. Oh boy. The two days, I was in pain of course but I was SO happy to be cured that it just felt like I got beat up *a little*
It was Day 3 that was rough.
The next week adter that, also rough. 😖 No energy.
The body takes time to come down from such high stress and when you are down, damn you are DOWN.
I love you guys so much💕 you are both so amaziiiiing
That end screen music was freakin’ amazing
Grace, you are such a supportive partner.
:)
Just imagine if u guys have a baby! That'll be a lot more zombie-ing and 3 a.m. sweet potatoes for grace😂
KM!attheDisco I love Panic! at the disco lmao
KM!attheDisco SHER
Aww you guys are so cute💖💖
It’s a doggo 🐕
I would say inviting Ash too because inviting them and they sounds plural to me.
Comedy specials kept me alive during my (not-top but p major) surgery.
Srsly, keep your mind busy. The bad days are *so* long.
These two are the most adorable couple on the planet oh my gods
you two look so cute together! lots of love and support!
You guys are the best I wish I had someone like Grace to take care of me . My back hurt the first few days but now I am so sore where I was cut open it’s infected and my armpits swell if I do more then I should . I took my binder off the first week because it hurt so bad .
Woah! Ash looks so incredible good in this vid! Especially in the first part where their hair is kinda messy
The sleep schedule thing was the biggest thing I remember from being a caregiver.
This is so helpful, thank you
I have the same shirt!!! Love it i honestly wore a whole weekend showing it off!!
If there was a vampire movie Grace would be the vampire not trying to be rude
Jesus Nazareth A super cute and cool vampire though
sore back? dude i had a back surgery and did i complain? no.
I have a rhinoplasty coming up in December and I’m so scared but so so excited
Also, the drains... You can feel the "bubbling" under the skin when it drains.
Gabe Elijiah that sounds awful 😭
There's nothing on the end screen?
I had surgery 2 weeks ago.
I wish I knew that I'd be so bloated after that I'd look heavily pregnant for the next 9 days 😂😂
For me the worst pain was having to take off sticky dressings and tape off. Personally I felt very little pain other than that. I stopped pain killers the day after, and felt completely back to my normal self (walking around my house and stuff) 3 days after. A plus is that my sleeping has never been better, I think because I'm forced to stay to still 😂
I love them!!! 💕💕 y’all are so cute
Now I need the magnets. NEED. Just for the clicky noise.
My back hurting was THE worst part about recovery.
i love you both but what the heckie did you say in the outro
Awwww echo gilette is amazing
i should be doing my math homework
They are so in love with one another. ❤️❤️❤️
Grace was amazing supportive
“F that, no. I’m a effing trooper” is so meeeee
I like your centre-parted hair!
