No matter how many times I watch a first timer react to jinjer, that warm fuzzy feeling doesn't get old. Welcome to jinjer , where you're floored by Tatiana and then realize that the band itself is stellar.
And the best part? They're the most humble people you'd ever meet!

Wonderful reaction, Jenna. Tatiana and Jinjer in general opened me up to the world of harsh vocals. As a vocalist,Tati is just as expressive in her harshes as her cleans. And as the primary lyricist, she's very poetic. The instrumentalists are equally skilled, and write complex, yet approachable music. This performance was to introduce their new drummer, Vlad. Vlad is a classically trained pianist who only took up the drums when the band he was playing guitar in prior to Jinjer needed a drummer. I've seen Jinjer live 3 times, and they are as about as tight of an ensemble you will ever see. Tatiana is absolutely magnetic as a frontwoman, it's incredible.

Excellent and accurate breakdown of the lyrics. Tatiana is a Pisces, and so is the bassist Eugene.
Their music is progressive groove metal; they tend to stick to more complex time signatures. Lots of variety in their sound. I probably would never have discovered them if it wasn’t for reaction channels, but I got to see them live last November. They were also opening for Disturbed this summer.

Hello and welcome to the wonderful world of Jinjer!
I really enjoyed watching your reaction and appreciate that unlike many who've reacted to this video, you really "got" the lyrics and the duality of the vocals as well!
Like you, harsh vocals or "growls" as they're most commonly referred to, didn't used to be my thing, either, but bands like Opeth and ESPECIALLY Jinjer have opened my mind up and expanded my musical horizons. Tatiana is one of the greatest metal vocalists to ever do it, IMO, a beautiful clean singer as well as one of the best harsh or "brutal" vocalists in the game, she and her bandmates are immensely talented musicians!
I would STRONGLY recommend checking out their live performance of "Perennial" live from Wacken (the one where she's wearing a gold jumpsuit) next, as it is a perfect representation of how incredible they are in a truly live concert performance. Tati's live vocals on this one will blow your mind!
My next recommendation after that would be her one-take live performance of their reggae-meets-metal masterpiece "Judgement and Punishment", I think you'll walk away from those two even MORE impressed with her massive talent!
Anyhoo, really enjoyed the reaction, welcome to the awesome rabbit hole that is Jinjer, and I look forward to watching more of your reactions!
    Peace...

Welcome to Jinjer. Tatiana is a vocal goddess and the band is top tier. Tatiana's lyrics are usually quite poetic. She was a literature major in university. I recommend "Perennial" live at Wacken for a follow up. Good reaction. (Subbed)

  • @gingerbeardedone3318
    @gingerbeardedone3318 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Tatiana is producing the harsh vocals using a technique called a false fold growl. It doesn't utilize the vocal chords at all, but instead [as the name suggests] the false vocal chords. This is how she can produce that sound and then switch immediately to clean vocals with no rasp, and no perceivable damage to her vocal chords.
The Fairy Voice Mother does an excellent breakdown of how the technique works in her reaction to this video.

Tati's live one take of Judgement and Punishment is the next best video to see. I would bring up the lyrics to get adjusted to following her harsh vocals. The whole band is next level. She's really shy in person and becomes a beast on stage. Rock on and stay heavy!! \m/

  • @mikeholmes5308
    @mikeholmes5308 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Great reaction once again, you pulled out of the stunned moment better than a lot of reactors, with some cogent commentary. Tatiana's harsh vocals do have way more depth than the average artist who performs this way. Her various vocal techniques are all amazing. Some songs of theirs have more or less of the harsh vocals, ranging from all harsh to very little harsh, just used sparingly to punctuate thoughts.
I personally was not a fan of growling and so forth until I found Jinjer. Now I'm a fan of hers at least. And I 100% agree with you that her lyrics are really deep and interesting. You very much understood the duality of Pisces.
If you want to continue to get to know their stuff, I'll second several of the recommendations below. To prove she and the band can do it live (I've seen them perform live, and they are amazing), their performance of Perennial live at Wacken is great, her live solo session of Judgement & Punishment, the Teacher, Teacher music video, I Speak Astronomy... I could go on and on.

I think when she switches to her harsh vocals, you can still tell every word she says. There are a LOT of metal bands that I know they are screaming something, but I can't understand a word of it, and I've been in bands all my life basically. The “Superfecta” of Hard Rock and Metal: Band-Maid / The Warning, and Jinjer / Lovebites -- all pushing their core genres into the next realm! 🤘 🤘 🤘🤘
My simple take regarding her "Satanic" voice: If you were a selfless fish (Pisces) who wanted to see the world but was a bit skittish, and then got into the nets and was hooked by handsome butchers who proceed to rip away your scales and entrails (emeralds)... you'd growl too! So you see, sometimes the lyrics call for extreme vocals in a song.
Tatiana (who's not singing as someone possessed, so you can toss the garlic back into the spaghetti sauce) wrote an incredible story and sang about it the way it deserved to be sung... as with most of her songs. Some vocalist just keep singing in their nice and charming voice even when the lyrics call out desperation.
Not so with Tati. Her extreme expression - a rare ability - adds so much more to a song... especially if you follow the music with the lyrics and how the beautiful cacophony tells the story. Thx, Koality!

Jinjer are a band from the Ukraine, they're; Tatiana on Vocals, Eugene is the Bassist, Roman on Guitar, Vlad is the Drummer.
    Songs which I recommend are:
'Perennial' live at Wacken Open Air Festival from 2019,
'Teacher Teacher' the official music video,
'Judgement (and Punishment)' Tatiana's One-Take Vocal version,
'On The Top' and 'Pit of Consciousness' both live in Kiev,
    'Vortex' the official music video,
'Home Back' the official music video, this is a personal one for the band as it's about the invasion of Russian troops in the part of the Ukraine which they're from in 2015, obviously before the main Russian invasion a couple of years ago,
'Call Me A Symbol' the official music video, this was done as a commentary on the anniversary of the main Russian invasion of the Ukraine. There are many other great tracks from this excellent band, but these are good ones to start with.

Just a little breakdown of how that sound is made! It’s called a “false cord” scream, made using your vestibular folds. It’s very similar to how a dog barks. She’s essentially singing a mixed voice note that would be placed around the barrier between her mouth and sinuses maybe more forward toward her mask and moving the vestibular folds in the way of the air flow. The higher screams at the end are going to be placed more in the nasal passage. It’s done with the same abdominal tension and upper airway relaxation as a fast mixed voice vibrato

Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air 2019 is a great showcase of the flipping between growl and cleans. Pit of Consciousness live in Kyiv is pure metal mayhem. Also, Who is going to be the one? live is just Tatiana telling you how it's going to be. whilst Teacher, Teacher the orignal music video is simply the prettiest of music imaginable. The Vortex music video is very progressive. Retrospection is very hard but loving. Home Back is stark.

Tatiana is amazing but for me Courtney Laplante of Spiritbox is on another level. She has a voice of an angel but can also switch back and forth from scream to clean vocals every other word and she even does it mid word flawlessly.
You should check out "Spiritbox Circle With Me Courtney Laplante live one take performance"

It's one from my favorites songs to watch on reaction channel and it's not even most liked from all Jinjer pieces. Expressions of reactors, when Queen of Growling start making this beautiful sound, are priceless 🤘BTW I'm Nightwish fan😁

I love to see the reaction to this song! Thanks! That's all Tatiana, she's insanely talented with her voice. You said you liked just the music on it's own - so, if you haven't heard them yet, you should get listening to Tool. Have a great ride, and of course, spiral out!

Oh, and another one (you might even laugh at some of this girl singer's antics) is Spiritbox. Check out Rule of Nines to get started. And watch her (Courtney) as well as Tatiana in their isolated live vocal videos here on YT!

It's always fun watching people react to Tatiana and her vocal switches. To understand why she flips between the two for this song you need to understand what a Pisces is and then read the lyrics and understand that she's talking about being that Pisces fish. The last verse is all about being gutted and cleaned by the "handsome butchers" and the fishes scales being ripped away are green, so she says, "emeralds are ripped away" over and over again to indicate that more and more of the scales are coming off. Her lyrics are often times a lot deeper than people give her credit for, and she apparently just shows up and decides to make it up on the spot with no lengthy lyrical planning like other singers do. Another one where she flips a far bit from her softer "cleans" to her insistent voice is "Teacher, Teacher".

I did talk about what a Pisces is, and how I liked what she did with the vocals because it mirrored the lyrics and the essence of a Pisces. 🙂

Tati, is a beast. She is able to do that growl, thanks to having absolute control of her false vocal chords (or folds). We all have them like when you make a fake burb.

Tatiana is such an amazing versatile singer and best of all she is self taught and practiced her voice for many years and she also writes all the lyrics for their songs. And the rest of the band is also amazing musicians. You should check some of their live performances she does this switching on stage as well.

Pisces here also. Yeah, I agree with you as to when she changed her voice the first time I heard it. I thought she was using something to change her voice until I scrolled through the comments to see that it was her doing that. 😮

  • @coder4liberty

It's very common for people to say "I don't normally like harsh vocals but the way she does it I like". It's a good balance. A good example of her doing this live on stage is Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air. Perennial is about how people get seasonal depression when fall and then winter comes until spring comes back.
The technique she's using is false chord growling/screaming. The false chords extend over the actual vocal chords when you swallow to help keep food from going to down the wrong way. Singers who learn this technique learn to control those otherwise involuntary muscles to make sounds. The vocal chords don't have to be used with this technique although they can use them for additional sounds. That enables her to switch back and forth pretty quickly.

Two following two metal bands also have women who do growls:
    * Arch Enemy, with Alissa White-Gluz: th-cam.com/video/dsuhfOD7emE/w-d-xo.html
    * Spiritbox, with Courtney LaPlante: th-cam.com/video/yht0WDdzGJM/w-d-xo.html

It’s very much a different technique of clean va harsh. Harsh stuff when done properly is mostly in the false folds, and creating longer and bigger spaces in your throat and mouth will create a deeper sound when pair with a smaller mouth opening. Alternatively, smaller space and wider mouth opening leads to higher pitch stuff.

LOL I imagine all the requesters are watching saying "gotcha !!!!" Happens every time.
This one in particular, is about the duality of life and the human nature, hence Pices, like the astrological symbol.
The band is actually phenomenal though, and Tatianna is a goddess. Vocal range and power for days. Her false fold magic is something that mere mortals can only contemplate. She actually can pitch bend it, which is remarkable in itself because it means she has the false fold growl while she is still engaging her vocal tract underneath, its wicked. Grant from Unleash the Archers is another one that can do it that I know of.

Both are sung in her native language so turn on english captions for your reactions, Thanks and keep having fun!

Since you have gone through such a journey of music styles that you once believed would be outside your comfort zone, I am curious if you would also do a reaction to the power metal sound of Finnish band (with Greek vocalist) Beast in Black's official video for "Blind and Frozen" ? Their male vocalist has a rather unique sound that I would love to hear you react to in this series.

Ok... it's been a hot minute since you've checked out Jinjer... If you're ready for some more, even though harsh vocals aren't really your thing, I think experiencing Perennial (Live at Wacken) will do a couple of things for you....
    1) Prove that yes, she can do those vocal switches live
    and
    2) Show just how talented the rest of the band is as well.
There's a reason their videos get millions of views....

She has enticed a lot of young women to check out metal music. Their live performances are incredible. They're from Ukraine, so they often can't return home. They just have to stay on the road perfecting their performance. Their audiences at live shows are predominantly women and families. I've seen several women on TH-cam who had never been fans of metal still nevertheless travel to see them play live. They are one of the most, if not the most bootlegged bands on TH-cam. Thousands and thousands of videos from their live shows have been uploaded to TH-cam since 2010. Even still today, every time they visit a city new video of their show gets uploaded by fans.

I'm not normally one for harsh vocals either, but there are a few bands that are different and Jinjer is one of them; Unlucky Morpheus, Nemophila, The Agonist, Arch Enemy, and Carcass are the others. One thing I've noticed about Jinjer is that the more women react to this band, the more the reactor loves Tatiana. Roman, Eugene, and Vlad are all fantastic musicians, but women always gravitate to Tatiana. It's interesting.

Tati is one of the best, if not the best, female False Cord Screamer; there are others that can do similar screams though usual not at this level. Metalcore singers tend to be very versatile singers, but they are not the only ones that can do it. Examples of female singers that can do harsh vocals/scream: Floor Jansen of Nightwish (yes that Floor, the only Nightwish song she does it is "Yours is an Empty Hope" though in her previous band ReVamp it was more common), Alissa of Arch Enemy (Death Metal band as well as their previous singer Angela), Courtney of Spiritbox, Jessie of Ankor, Mayu of Nemophila, Yukina of Hanabie, Yasmin of Face Yourself (Deathcore Band), Otep from Otep, and The Fairy Voice Mother (vocal coach/reactor, her Jinjer Pisces reaction is top tier and includes an explanation and example of False Cord Screams which you would never expect from her). You have survived Tati/Jinjer so you can handle pretty much any singer/band I have listed with the exception of maybe Yasmin/Face Yourself (just because they are Deathcore and more intense/brutal).
