Never thought a heat gun could maintain a steady temp like that. And the oven from faced insulation is really smart. Thanks for this video, I learned something from it.
@@slowdownx3919 theoretically it should if you make a cabinet that doesn't let the heat escape and use a high quality heat gun and direct the air away as to not mess up the powder layer on the parts. But heat from an air gun is delivered differently than heat from an oven as one uses coils that heat up and a blower to push that heated air out while an oven uses induction coils in an enclosed insulated area to heat up said area and bake the parts. But theoretically yes it should be if you can get the heat gun to hold between 350 and 450 degrees to allow the powder coat to cure on the parts but that would have to be fully tested
I think the difference between someone the DIYs and someone who doesn't is the smile and chuckle at 3:03, invariably things go wrong in projects, how you roll with it keeps it fun and entertaining.
For sandblasting the frame and wheels I use a cheap 2 man tent ⛺ and a good respirator. These are generally well sealed. You can tip it up in such a way to reclaim most of your media from the corner of the floor. Also for heating I use an electric hot plate, works just fine
@@AaronColton93 Thanks, Aaron. I'm almost done with my first dirtbike rebuild after viewing yours and many other similar guys rebuilds for inspiration.
Make the oven but don't put a door on it. Instead leave the floor unattached and slip the "oven" over your parts and the floor. This allows you to stage all your painted parts in the oven when you have access from 5 sides, reducing the risk of scrubbing any paint as you are putting them in the oven.
@@eschrader Yes, you make a box out of 6 pieces of foam. The 4 sides and the roof are all connected together. You then take those 5 pieces and slip it over the floor and the parts.
Then you have to build a sturdy hanging rack. I prefer a opening lid via duct tape hinges, and an extra inside wall that is movable to reduce the size of the box for multiple small items. A 2' x 2' x 4' box can quickly turn into a 2' x 2' x 2' box or smaller.
Great video!! two things I saw which is not recommended was. #1 from cerakote is the catalyst should not be used in plastic spray gun cup /Harbour freight does have a 4 oz spray gun with a aluminum cup, I use them. # 2 you need better protection when your blasting you can see in the video the media going every where I would recommend you stepping it up by using the respirator better safe than sorry/ That fine media is very dangerous, many men dies from over exposure to it. protect your self and be sure, respirators are not mad I use a 3M one I think 30.00

I'm just glad that 99% of what I cerakote is knives and Leatherman so I don't have to build an oven. I just grabbed a digital temp control from AliExpress for $20 and hooked it up to an old standalone oven I found for free on marketplace

Olfa makes a long blade utility knife that's great for cutting foam board. Cool video man and thanks for showing a better option for the oven! One place I worked at many years ago did a lot of powder coating for parts we made for the military, mainly having to do with the illumination of FOB's. The oven there was about big enough to put a vehicle in and about 10 foot in height. Lol. It was awesome but so was the electric bill that went with it I'm sure! I don't know what the isolated cost was to run it at least 5 days a week 24 hrs a day.(3 shifts), because we had a lot of welding machines and fabrication equipment too. I've been wanting to do a lot of parts on my bike as well but couldn't afford to pay someone. This is such a great alternative! Cheers
For longevity it might be better to set up your heat gun on the outside with a metal tube poked through the wall or even just the front end of the gun itself pushed through. That way you are not continually heating up your entire gun over and over as I am sure it eventually wouldn’t like it.
hmm, you would have to filter or you are sucking dust/pollen/pullution into your "booth". That is why commercial systems have extensive filtration for this.
5:54 That’s oddly specific that you “like to mask any holes under 6mm”… But that brings up one of my other questions what sort of heat resistant masking do you use?

Mine in a low setting maintained about 230F for three builds this year. You could also create a solution supporting the heat gun on the outside of the oven.
I would have made a frame out of wood to attach the thermosheet to. Would make it more sturdy. Do you have issues getting parts and seals to fit afterwards? Spraying on a coating would add some thickness. I imagine it could hinder reassembly and function. Especially engine parts

They also make hotwire foam cutting/sculpting tools and you can get cheap quality ones for a little next to nothing. I bet that would work out ok too. My video shows how to do it even cheaper.. Quite a bit cheaper. I don't use a sandblaster but your oven is pretty ingenious. Where mine is something most people have. Another thing people can do is air cure cerakote. May advantages to it compared to oven cured. Holds up to UV rays and higher temps.
