I was wondering what that little piece of pipe between is all about, too. Does it just make it stronger or are there holes and a pathway for exhaust to go between the 2 headers? And if so, what would be the point of that? wouldn't it defeat the purpose of headers? And why only on 2 of them? SO many questions and so few answers! lol
@@craigconcrete5936 Hi Craig. Great question. It actually is a 'balance pipe'. It scavanges exhaust back pressure between the two cylinders and then it all dumps into a common collector downstream. It improves the flow of exhaust gasses and helps the E.C.U. to manage the fuel mapping by providing it with stable information.
@@craigconcrete5936 Hey Craig! My pleasure. If I'm not mistaken, that middle balance pipe is synonymous with the cross plane crank configuration of the inline 4 used in the R1. A better surface prep and cleaning with acetone would give it a better appearance. Also it's easier to achieve an even color with a weed burner
It worked with uniformity in my oven with conventional bake on so no one place was getting direct heat
They do this the first time you ride the bike hard on fresh headers. But give it a month & they'll look exactly as they did at the start.

not if you use a hotter torch
