Brendan is so soft spoken and gentle with this lady. Love that. I watch these shows where they force time limit's which causes people involved to snap at the hoarder. Hoarders like familiarity. Their world is their home. Their junk is tied to a sense of loss in life. Its not a 2-day process. Too bad she didn't take the therapy deal. Therapy can be painful but does help a person realize why they are messed up.

Two years ago I moved from a 1,100 square foot home to a 700 square foot apartment. I HAD to get rid of a lot, even though I was never a hoarder. It really made me think about what I needed and what I didn't. Lots of trips to Goodwill for sure! And I feel so much better about it-less for my kids when I "depart".

Hopefully she eventually got some help for her addiction. And sorted her home out.
When I cleaned up I found letters from 15 years ago in my cubord. And a trailer load of donations. Saving to sell online it’s annoying to upload then wait I put a full box of brand new items of clothing on for like 15 from this size to that size it sat for like 2 weeks no interest. I’m like out it goes I don’t want all this left in my house.

I easily go into eco-hoarding. My trick is just to make a quick craft from it, use it as my art therapy for the day, and I feel SO MUCH BETTER about getting rid of the upcycling materials the same day. I feel claustrophobic around clutter, and I also hate wasting. This is a win-win for me.

I want to personally thank this show. My son (18) used to be so messy. Very messy. I always had to get onto him about cleaning up his room and bringing his dirty dishes out, etc.
One day, I noticed how clean everything was. Didn't say anything.
    But he kept it immaculate.
He started getting involved in keeping the rest of the house clean.
One day not long ago, I asked him what happened. I pointed out he used to be filthy and why did he do a sudden about face and change.
He was about 10-12, and he came into the kitchen and I was watching "some show" where the house was full of trash and someone either died or almost died (he couldn't remember which) and he said that something clicked in his head that you will die if you don't keep stuff clean (I assume it was the episode where the older lady tied herself to a chair at night to sleep, slipped out and fell into her diapers and could have died) and he started keeping everything clean.
Now he's a bigger neat freak than I am. He gets annoyed if I accidentally bump something out of place in his room XD

Gabor Mate, Psychiatrist is an amazing resource for all of us. Something happened during childhood , a trauma. It might have been something we’d not even notice. It’s core issues are she felt unseen and unheard by her parent(s). She does need therapy but it has to relate to coping skills. Learning new way to handle stress, feeling overwhelmed. She’s aware and wants to change. Physical problems connected to this. Positives in her life are her friends, she has a job and she’s seeking help. The man was so supportive and kind. His approach to her was so good!! Her friends were really supportive. 😢😢

Hanging on to and purchasing Teddy bears to help you is a level of emotional immaturity that is rather sad. Unfortunately it's common amongst hoarders. This person has never gotten past her childhood traumas and is living with them in her adulthood. She has become her mother because it's all she knows. To change would take an enormous effort on her part as she would have to reject a huge part of herself. I don't find these shows entertaining, I find them sad for the most part.

The main problem with hoarders is their brain is cluttered so their life is cluttered. EVERYTHING is important and EVERYTHING is valuable. In reality 90% of their hoard is cheap cheap cheap. They REFUSE to listen to a professional organizator. Their scrambled brain cannot phantom anything other than their own way of thinking which is why they're in the mess they are. They cannot let go of something as simple as a rubber band or paper clip. Their stuff is shuffled around from room to room or tossed in a garage; nothing is ever thrown away permanently.

I've seen hoarders in these clips fight to hold on to a piece of paper soaked in mouse urine, every item is precious whatever condition it is in 😬

@MargaretUK Oh yeah. They hadn't seen or thought of it in years, but now it's precious.

Most people who "don't know Jesus" have done so by choice. Why can't people just respect other people's religions?
