These poor old Scanias of 82/92/93 series had no glow plugs, but they started! I once drove a 93 with more than 400,000 km behind and it was all good. Hated the 5-speed gearbox coupled to a 210 hp engine - not humane! Before it I drove Renaults, G260 being my favourite. As the name indicates, it had a 260 hp engine. Most wonderful was the 18-speed gearbox (most gears were useless in normal use, two delivery rounds a day, but if you had to go further, the 18th gear made it possible to gain 115 kph, I reckon it's about 70 mph). And the torque of that engine!
In Sweden all the guys who drove trucks back in the day tend to agree that Scania made the best engines and Volvo made the best transmissions, if only the two made a truck together
I got an old (1954) Steyr Tractor 1 Cyl. 15 HP, which had the problem by cold start by user. Here it is the same! This engine has a direct injection, what happens here is the guy puts full gas and the Cylinder which did not fireup had a lot of fuel dust inside the cylinder, with every turn it comes more and more and the starting goes bad and more bad because of the overfilles chamber. SO if you would start an diesel you have to see what happens and if there is to much white smoke (injected diesel not fireing) you have to take off the throttle and the engine will start very quick, because the overfilled diesel will kill your flame which already starts to come by injected fuel. That is the reason why the engine is still blow white by running, to clean the chamber and then run all cyls. At my tractor it was the same, chamber overfilled, just crank without gas and after tuck tuck, just give a little fresh fuel and he come quick, if all the time full throttle no chance it is overfloatet and no engine will start! have fun!
CreRay: Old Scanias don´t have glow plugs so there is a forced fuel injection for cold starts. You have to push the rod which is on the side of the high pressure pump. This causes that the pump pushes all of the fuel that it can to the injectors.
That would only effect it at full throttle though; too much fuel isn't the best way to start them, if it doesn't ignite the injected fuel cools the cylinder, but may be more likely to flash/ burn...I wonder, with my old ones, I crank them for a bit with no accelerator, then just push it down a little, it like if u gat one just started and floor it, it will often die and u need to crank some more.
tpvalley yes,is true, full throttle cold start the un ignited fuel condenses in the cylinders, and it is dangerous, because one spark may ignite the fuel out of synchro, and explods out of the exhaust pipes.this effect causes amount of clag.
nomon95 U know its compression ignition right? Not dangerous, just knock. Mainly just passes through as vapour. But as I say it cools the cylinder; when fuel is injected at first u get a tiny pressure drop as the fuel cool the charge, then it ignites as the remaining heat is enough.
Forced fuel injection works only when the gas pedal is fully pressed. When I heard that the engine revved up, I released the gas pedal and the forced fuel infection went off.
Hm, looked like my old Nissan Cherry - who after a cooooooold night was problematic to start to put it blunt.. I got the old bird working - after a while but it smoked as VESUV when it started..
Complimenti bellissimo video io ho fatto dei modellini in scala se ti va di vederli su TH-cam antonello vicino autobus di tutto il mondo se ti va puoi farlo girare ad altri colleghi grazie
If we say the bus is a 6 cylinder maybe only 4 of the cylinders have enough heat to actually fire and the remaining 2 are missing and are generating heat until they are able to combust the fuel. Hopefully that explains it I'm not good at things like this lol
+Harinder Singh Diesels need compression and heat in order to fire, and you knew that right? So, usually all engines wear unevenly, meaning that maybe one or two cylinders have a bit less compression than the rest, meaning they heat up slower (Compressed air heats up), and that way the rest of the cylinders start firing sooner. If the engine is otherwise in good condition, it can easily start if at least 2 cylinders are firing. And when they do, the block starts to heat up, giving heat to rest of the cylinders and that way enabling the fuel mixture to ignite. At least that's how I think of it. And how I know that an engine can run with only one or two cylinders? I've tried it with my trusty N15 Nissan almera. Although it has a gas engine, I've managed to get it running with only one cylinder.
***** Not all of it, a lot of it is condensate. While it may not reach the upper atmosphere, it will carry pretty far and get into your (or other people/animals lungs). The stuff that does fall to the ground is hardly harmless either. On a small scale, it may not mean much, but on a larger scale, it can pollute ground water and land. Along railroad tracks and highways for example.
What's a starter good for if you're not going to use it? Do you think manufacturers were stupid enough to make these not reliable? Cranking for 15-20 seconds is absolutely normal for a starter. Besides, he did it only once and let it cool off thereafter. Gosh, i'm sick of people thinking they have any power over people's decisions. You don't even know the situation, yet go on and tell what's wrong and what's right. Who are you to do it? The guy in the video owns a bus goddamit, he must know what to do with it.
Ooooh love that hard core cranking of the engine and love how it smokes too. I bet that diesel smells good in the cold.
love the smell

Just lovely to see and hear how the enginge slowly comes back to life :D
I would love to smell all those lovely white smokes. Diesel smoke always smells amazing
I love the puffs of black smoke as it blows the residue from the engine

Its a fast starter fore one with no glow plugs on it in cold conditions. Im impressed. Love the real diesel sounds.
