When he says the word "tefuched", it's a Hebrew word for "you shall fear". When he was a kid he dated a Latina girl whose parents were not pleased about his Jewish descent. "You will fear someone different from you".

Tefached is the correct spelling but yes the word can be translated to mean “you shall fear” or “be afraid” and the meaning of the song is correct

Nu-metal was such a fun time and I am happy to see it make a comeback. My husband worked with the original Disturbed singer which is crazy and then David came, and the band took off. Saw them in 2001 at Ozzfest and was stunned at their stage presence.

David Draiman is such a beast ! even after 20+ years of career, he is just relevent like crazy! Even in 2023, live, he still sounds pretty much as good as a studio recording, which is VERY surprising! Respect the man so much

I've always loved David's voice. He tells a story by the way his vocal sound shifts. I'm in awe of Colm Wilkinson, Michael Crawford, and Michael Ball's voice shifts to tell a story. An Icelandic band - possibly worthwhile looking into is Sigur Rós - song #4 (Njosnavélin).. I find their music haunting.

Good call with Sigur Ros. You never see people react to them...they might be considered a bit inaccessible because it's so different but once you get that there is so much talent there it becomes fascinating and I'd love to see other people break it down a bit.

David always had a beautiful voice. You're right, it has matured even more beautifully over the years and so did his control of it. I don't know of another rock/metal vocalist that can slide so easily from head voice to distortion and back on a dime, nor have I heard anyone else actually put vibrato on distortion... which I understand is incredibly difficult to do. Thanks Ken...please try "The Light" and "The Game" soon.

Disturbed are a band I've just started to listen to a bit more, although I had known their "Down With The Sickness" via my son and, of course, their "Sound Of Silence". I believe I read somewhere that the lead singer, David, originally had vocal training when he started to train for the priesthood, which may account for that religious sounding part that I think you described as "cantorial"?
Hearing a vocal coach reacting to this kind of music is interesting (I'm subscribed to a couple now) and informative. In the last few months I stumbled upon Jonathan Young and his amazing vocals. I've listened to many covers by him of songs that by-passed me when they were released (and usually find I prefer his version!). Due to listening to so much by him TH-cam kindly pushed one of your older reactions to him in my direction, which is how I've ended up a new subscriber here now ☺ I also love his original music and would be interested to hear any reactions to some of that. 🙂
You say a lot of music from around 2000 passed you by at the time and I totally get that - it did me as well. Once my children hit their teens and started to discover music for themselves (around the mid 2000's) I started to be introduced to some of the current stuff - especially via my son who definitely acquired his mother's rock leanings at that time! - but a lot of it still passed me by. I spent my teens and twenties listening to what is now classic rock (Led Zep, Deep Purple and the like). Throughout my thirties music kind of passed me by as I brought up my children then in my forties I went back to the classics. For a long while, during some more troublesome times for me, I stuck with what I knew but now I'm retired , my children are settled into their own lives and I've started to discover a lot of stuff that previously passed me by and I'm wandering the rabbit holes of TH-cam, taking many surprising diversions! 😄

It's so funny to think that the gateway to Disturbed appreciation is a Simon & Garfunkel cover haha but once you realize that Drammond is exceptionally talented the rest of his music suddenly becomes more palatable to a wider audience :)

The reason he can make those sounds and growls with beautiful singing is because he had surgery done on his vocal cords for a physical problem he had and needed surgery done. So he had the surgery and can sing, growl, and do what he does and made it perfect

I'd love to hear you react to some Slipknot. Corey Taylor has one of the largest ranges "in popular music" at 5 and a half octaves. His clean singing is amazing but he also has great tones in his growling. I'd recommend one of their more mainstream songs to start with. They are very intense at times, but also when stripped away completely soul smashing. As you aren't a huge fan of growling I'd probably recommend Dead Memories, Snuff, or maybe The Devil Inside - but that one's a bit more intense, although an amazing example of Corey et all's insane talents.

Disturbed from this era/time reminds me of Korn and other bands similar... Grungy early-rapping-spoke-style rock, where nearly everything is basically an open yell.
I don't even really consider Disturbed metal(though many do)... its really just heavy rock.
The musicianship and overall composition of their songs are decent. Definitely a huge change in early vs late styling with them.
I still consider this Good to average... but back in the time... it was part of the forefront of publicly available "heavy rock" really.
Besides that; @Ken Lavigne I would love to see your take on Haken, a progressive metal/rock band that has been around since '07... LONG songs, but VERY good songs. Their average song is about 10 minutes+, and almost Dream Theatre like in compositions typically.
An iconic/popular song of theirs I would recommend is Pareidolia. Link is > th-cam.com/video/kr_gROZmTtA/w-d-xo.html
(might want to include a flashing lights warning on the music video if you react to this one in particular.)
OR... If you want a nice LONG song... I REALLY like Celestial Elixir. It mixes in everything from metal to polka to olde' rock musicianship. Link is > th-cam.com/video/mdh6upXZL6c/w-d-xo.html
(there ARE live versions of the song but balances sound slightly off and detract frm the overal sound. I personally much prefer the remastered recording.)

So funny. I was 32 in 2000, was a huge Metallica fan, and I still missed all of this because I despised the "nu metal" scene. I discovered Disturbed just a few years ago and now I LOVE them (and anything with David Draiman in it). I guess now I understand this type of music better.
