- Danny Kingad booked his ticket to the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix finals with a narrow split decision win over Reece McLaren at ONE: DAWN OF HEREOS. The Australian contender looked to impose his Brazilian jiu-jitsu prowess early on in the bout, taking the Filipino phenom down to the ground before quickly transitioning to full mount. However, Kingad showcased his improved ground defense, powering out of the predicament to end the frame on his feet. Kingad then rallied back in the next two rounds, landing multiple takedowns of his own and unleashing powerful ground-and-pound. After three rounds of action, “The King” was awarded a split decision win much to the delight of the hometown crowd.

Danny Kingad is a fierce fighter and he's only 23 so there's A LOT of room to grow, facing Demetrious Johnson. If he wins, he could become a world renown fighter. Though it may seem as a long shot, if he improves his BJJ and ground game, he would be on par with DJ, except that he would lack experience

Its a close fight, and I go with either of the two to won that night, if it was round by round I see Reece will clearly won, but since the scoring system of one championship is different from the other MMA organization, wherein, near KO and submission was on top, followed by damage inflicted, striking superiority, takedowns/takedown defense and at the bottom is aggression.. I see kingad ahead from damage inflicted, and striking superiority and he even got points from takedown defense.. I don't see Reece got a near submission that night but still impressed enough seeing his beautiful ground work to nullify the striking of kingad.. But still hats off to Reece McLaren giving us a good fight to watch..

No, I've never met the guy. Him mouthing "red corner" isn't admitting Kingad won, it's him coming to the realization that the decision's probably going to go to the hometown fighter, which is exactly what happened ... You can tell from his body language changing as the decision is being read out

It may not be there best attribute but to say that Team lakay has no ground game is an understatement!

Its not that they have no skill or whatever in the ground. In fact they are one of the best if not the best in the Philippines. Its just that there are reasons why they are having a hard time when it comes to fighting internationally. Dont get me wrong though they are world class and ONE is blessed to have their warriors.
IMO one of the biggest contributor for them losing in the ground more often in their losses is muscle memory.
They came from a wushu background and eventually switching to MMA . Not a bad decision professionally, economically, etc but it also meant that they lag behind years even decades of knowledge in the ground game compared to fighters from other regions. Furthermore, getting used in using brute strength to get out of bad situations is hard to take off of ones system. This is evident of the older lakay fighters. While you can see that the younger ones are more flexible and skilled in ground games.
Still dont worry as time goes on with team Lakay's involvemenf fighting international MMA there are bound to be improvements. With talents teaching new talent and learning from one and also other's mistakes
I also hate countrymen(Filipinos) badmouthing them and pointing out that they lack ground control heck without them we dont even have somebody to cheer for in international MMA scene.
Oh maybe aside from naturalized or half Fils.
mc larren is a good grappler but not an elite grappler.
Mclaren put him down almost everytime... he has been robbed because he controlled the action in the 1st and the 2nd... kingad won because they judge the match as whole... not round by round!

Wushu specialist can fight and win againts bjj black belt. That was cool.
Team Lakay is Team stand up. They don't spend time to polish their grappling skills. All they do is spin get taken down, give their backs, survive and hope they can stand up. Very few knows how to grapple.

It doesn't matter if you're good in your ground game if you're facing danny kingad that guy got some ground combat skill added with his physical strength, when he's facing a BJJ specialist..the announcer always that a bad position for Kingad..but, The King is always able to show that he can deal with it.
