    I have been using the Mamiya 7ii for a while and it is absolutely amazing! I used to have a Pentax 67 before for many years and the sheer size and weight really put me off. But I still lugged it around on my travels. All that changed after getting this camera. Great video and subscribed!

      Thanks so much man! Hahah I totally agree, I must admit however there was a time where I was really curious about getting the Pentax, but the weight definitely put me off - beautiful camera though. Think the Mamiya is the way to go

    Do you prefer 35mm or 85mm for portrait?

    • @bendroege
      @bendroege  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Inhee TV I would say generally an 85mm would be a better portrait lens, but I reckon a 35mm is way more interesting and is a bit more artistic 🙏🏼

    Is it still a good camera for documentary portraits?

    • @bendroege
      @bendroege  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Quality wise technically yes? But if you’re we’re going to shoot a project, I think it might be better to look into some alternatives. I would personably prefer to use an RZ or Pentax if that was my goal. But it can definitely be done!

    • @bendroege
      @bendroege  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me it’s just the minimum focus distances are quite long, maximum f4 lens and range finder system makes portrait shooting a little hard to be honest. But it really is all personal choice depending on your style

    I bought my Mamiya 7ii five or six year ago with a 80mm and 150mm lens all in totally mint condition for aussie $2.5k. Hardly used it and was astonished how much they are selling for now. I should've bought a few of them instead of shares! So I thought I better start using the bugger. Recently bought a nice 50mm to go with it. Shooting velvia and FP4 and the results are very nice. These lenses are so good.

    • @bendroege
      @bendroege  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow a Mamiya 7 for 2.5k is insane, let alone the mark 2! Haha it does seem like that, they can be a great investment. That's so good to hear you have a few lenses, very very jealous haha. I think I might pick up an 80mm sometime soon. Yeah I bet Velvia would look so nice, only shot the 35mm version so far but need to give it a go. Man you could make a decent buck selling your gear though haha. Thanks for watching!

  • @momoxh
    @momoxh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    great video dude! I'm about to buy one of these, one thing I noticed that when you rotate the focus ring on the lens, the yellow frame in viewfinder moves, do you need to recompose when the frame moves?

    • @bendroege
      @bendroege  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! That’s awesome you’re thinking of getting one, highly recommend. This scared me initially, but no you don’t need to recompose at all. It’s just the focus of the lens that moves into the right spot (hope that makes sense). So essentially that yellow frame has to be in the centre of the viewfinder for ur subject to be in focus. Once you get one you’ll see it’s super super easy to use 😜

    Hi, Is it worth buying the Mamiya 7 II + 80mm f/4 £3500-£3800? User says it is immaculate. Is it too risky to buy as they are old. User says he bought it new in 2003. Is this camera recommended for portraits and travel? Do these cameras break as they are old and has electronics.

    • @bendroege
      @bendroege  ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems within the market rate! But I don’t think it’s worth it. The mark ii has minimal advantages, but it’s possible it would last longer. I’d recommend getting the mark 1 and saving a few bucks. But max id pay for that is £2500. They’re normally very reliable cameras and I’ve never had issues with mine! It’s the best camera for travel and landscape work for sure, but for portraits although still good id recommend other setups like the Pentax 67. Hope that helps :)

      Ben Droege Do you process your own film or do you use a lab?

    • @bendroege
      @bendroege  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use a great lab man. Used to scan myself but found it too be very time consuming

    • @DanielLongPhotography
      @DanielLongPhotography 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ben Droege Makes sense, when I started photography it was in school and we would develop the film and prints ourselves. I miss that and look forward to when I can set up a darkroom for a bit of fun.

    • @bendroege
      @bendroege  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's so cool. It's really sad that a lot of schools no longer teach it. Even when I finished not too long ago it was already being phased out. A home darkroom would be so ideal, good thing is there are so many easier options now that make the process much simpler.

    • @bendroege

      Highly recommend it. And thank you man! It definitely is way too overkill, the 645 is probably a more practical option come to think of it. Cheers!

    Awesome video Ben back in my wedding days I wanted a Mamiya RB67 but the price stopped me I ended up with a Bronica ETRSi stunning camera. The Mam 7 looks great mate.

      Paul Taylor Photography Thanks Paul! The RB is also a great camera, still very pricey too which is a shame. The Bronica also looks very nice! Thanks for watching :)

      @@bendroege When I started shooting weddings I used and old 35mm SLR and was constantly pestered by guests wanting to know what made me a pro when they had the same camera. As a newbie to weddings It knocked my confidence a bit then my dad said go buy a medium format with a waist level finder and no one will bother you, I did, they didn't. I'm not a believer in gear making you a better photographer but I have to admit having the Bronica meant you were instantly given respect and the freedom to do the job.

    • @bendroege
      @bendroege  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paul Taylor Photography haha there’s always people who think they know better 😂. I fully agree with that, having a flashy camera isn’t everything, but it definitely shows others that you take things seriously

    Great video. But it always baffles me whey non fashion photographers think fashion photographers shoot everything at 2.8 all the time. That is a myth. Most fashion photographers shoot at f8 or larger as they look for detail. Also in MF DOF drop off is way quicker so even f5 works like 2.8

    • @bendroege
      @bendroege  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Yes totally agree with you on that one. I guess I kind of made the mistake of lumping portrait photographers in the same basket as fashion photographers which is not often the same
