Remedy - Shared Universe Explained (Control and Alan Wake)

  • With the release of the "AWE" DLC for Control, the beloved character, Alan Wake, returns. It seems that Remedy is trying to set up one giant shared universe for their gaming properties, but specifically for Control and Alan Wake. Whether or not Quantum Break or Max Payne/Alex Casey will factor into this remains to be seen. For now, let's just deal with what we know.

    Max payne is connected as well.
    Alan Wake is a writer of detective stories. Although the name of the detective is different, if you listen to the books chapters they describe events from "MAX PAYNE 1 &2, Also the voice actor who reads the chapters is MAX PAYNE. Now to QUANTUM BREAK Quantum break features a copy of ALAN WAKES novel DEPARTURE, and a chalkboard with a full breakdown of the plot of ALAN WAKE. Now ALAN WAKES typewriter is an object of power and its stored at the oldest house in CONTROL.
    Sam Lake wrote all of these games. So in essence MAX PAYNE, ALAN WAKE, QUANTUM BREAK, CONTROL are set in a shared universe. oh and btw The Director in CONTROL is the voice actor from MAX PAYNE, You're welcome 🙂

      This is even more relevant today. Max Payne (Alex Casey, Wake's book character) is in Alan Wake 2. Same face and same voice as Max.
      Wake wrote him into existence to help save his ass.

      Alex Casey is a spiritual successor to Max Payne, that's it. Quantum Break has some Alan Wake easter eggs and Mr. Door mentioned in Control and appearing in AW2 is a spuritual successor to Martin Hatch. Not exactly shared universe level connections other than on conceptual level

    “God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it?”
    Nietzsche’s works express a fear that the decline of religion, the rise of atheism, and the abscense of a higher moral authority would plunge the world into chaos. The western world had depended on the rule of God for thousands of years - it gave order to society and meaning to life. Without it, Nietzsche writes, society will move into an age of nihilism. Although Nietzsche may have been considered a nihilist by definition, he was critical of it and warned that accepting nihilism would be dangerous.

    • @Rasengan9000ttt
      @Rasengan9000ttt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I finally understand what he meant. I thought Nietzche was celebrating the death of God when really it was morning. I for one do not believe science can disprove God because in Christianity and many other religions God exists on another plane and doesn't have to physically be in our world to influence it. Its metaphysics, something physical science that relies on tangibility in order to establish fact. Both Alan Wake, Control, and Quantum Break if Remedy had the rights deal with being that exist in other planes be it time, darkness, or in other dimensions. I think Hatch from quantum talked about God in one of the live action cut scenes, and for those who haven't play it I'm going to give a big spoiler... hatch is an entity called a shifter. I forget exactly what they are but they are extremely powerful and it seemed like QB was teasing them as a boss fight but it never happened. Hatch in essencine might be an enity one might see as either an angel or a demon or perhaps even a God. The documents in QB seem to describe the shifters as demonic and you see the carnage they leave behind in the Monarch building.

    The appearance of a scarab beetle would be unlikely, but as you read yourself, it was NOT a scarab beetle. It was a scarabaeid beetle and the exact words from Jung were, "It was the nearest analog to a golden scarab that one finds in our latitudes." Even if it was a golden scarab, applying Occam's Razor here to avoid any logical fallacies would still lead to the only reasonable conclusion being some kind of coincidence (given a lack of concrete evidence to the contrary, the explanation that requires the least amount of assumptions is most likely to be correct). The fact that it was an entirely different species altogether, and one that was endemic to the area, only furthers this point tremendously. Jung was brilliant, but if his conclusion was that there was so paranatural explanation for this, then he was very susceptible to logical fallacies.

    There are also theorists that believe (me included) that Quantum Break is connected. A quantum ripple in QB referenced the small fictional town of Ordinary however that was set in Wisconsin, not Maine. Several Graffiti can be found simply say AWE, short for Altered World Events and the company in control has been referenced in the game but it was called the Federal Bureau of Altered World Events. Even in Control there is one small, possible connection. When talking to Dylan Faden he will talk about the dreams he's been having, one of those dreams involves him interacting with a man he calls Mr. Door. Mr Door explains to Dylan that there are multiple worlds beyond his own, one where a writer wrote about a cop(Alan Wake), one where the cop was real (Max Payne) and how Mr Door is in all of them at the same time "constantly shifting".
    Many people believe that Mr Door is Martin Hatch, the fact that Martin can shift inbetween worlds because he is a shifter and his last name is Hatch similar to Door make it incredibly possible.
    I'd love to see how these games are all connected somehow but since it's very unlikely that Rockstar and Microsoft Studios won't be giving back the game rights of Max Payne and Quantum Break to Remedy, the chances of a sequel involving these makes it quite slim.

    • @coolsenjoyer
      @coolsenjoyer ปีที่แล้ว

    Jung's work is really interesting and I can see why a game like control would be inspired by it.
    Important to not however is that the way he practiced psychology (archetypes, meaning of dreams, effect of our minds on the real world)
    Cannot be scientifically tested (archetypes, dreams having explicit meaning) or are in direct opposition with scientific observations (his writing on the perception of the observer changing the physical world).
    To me Jung is worth studying for the interesting ideas he brought to the table but his claims have to be taken with a heavy serving of salt.

    If we follow Jungs logic, and consider other members of the Scarabidea superfamily as scarabs, then it's not a rare occurence to see one in Western Europe. Rose chaffers themselves are quite numerous in urban areas, not to mention others like the maikäfer or maybugs and other "true" scarabs. There are 173 species of this family just in Switzerland see here: alpineentomology.pensoft.net/article/21179/ So while combined with the occurence of the dream it is certainly intersting, it is a strecth to say, that it is unlikely to encounter one. Also beetles are sensitive to polarized light, ( their carapaces also polarize light, so it is easier for them to find each other) so it is also not uncommon for beetles to fly into reflections of glass planes. Sorry for the long cmment, I know its only a side story in the whole video, but I am passionate about these things, and i thought maybe someone would be interested to know it.

    • @maxderrat
      @maxderrat  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      LOL I love this question because I'm having a hard time figuring out how to articulate my response. It's making me laugh at how confusing it is.
      Alan Wake and Control occupy the same universe in the same way that Marvel characters interact with each other in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). They are two separate properties under one label; let's call it the RGU (Remedy Gaming Universe). The gimmick/MacGuffin/theme/thing that connects Alan Wake and Control together is the multiverse theory.
      There is one moment in Control where Jesse talks to her brother, Dylan, and Dylan talks about how "there are many worlds, side by side, on top of each other, some inside of others." He also says: "In one world, there's a writer who wrote a story about a cop. In another world, the cop was real." This is in reference to Alan Wake writing the character of Alex Casey, and how in another world (presumably the world of Quantum Break), Alex Casey is a real person.
      It's confusing, I know. Did what I say help at all?

    • @HOTD108_
      @HOTD108_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@maxderrat I think I understand what you're saying, at least mostly.
      Does that imply at all that there would be infinite copies and alternate worlds/timelines of the events we see in these games? Like what's seen in Rick and Morty.
      If yes, how would dramatic tension and emotional investment be maintained? As in, why would the outcome of the story matter if in an alternate timeline an equally valid opposite outcome occurred. For example, imagine if Metal Gear existed within a multiverse, the tragedy of Big Boss or Raiden would be rendered invalid because in another reality, he doesn't experience that tragedy and everything is fine. Am I making sense? Sorry, I'm on the autism spectrum too and I get my ideas muddled sometimes.
      I really love your videos btw, Max, they really give me hope about myself.

    Alan Wake & Control are in the same "same" universe, not two separate realities, Qautom Break is up in the air at the moment. It all comes down to the theory, that your thoughts have mass, they did many studies & experiments on this real life, this is the fundamental law of physics that all the multi-realities follow looking at the Remedy universe. The dark place is one of many such dimensions "Thresholds" are portal locations or places where two or more universes collide from the universes structural weakness from the membrane of the space-time continuum, normally they do not open or get weaker unless their is an Object Of Power or Altered Item is near, it is theorized Alan's typewriter is one of such items, it explains the events of the Alan Wake game, typing out his thoughts becoming reality as the A.I. or O.o.P is the battery powering it all near the threshold of the Dark dimension, without it, your thoughts alone can't do anything as the local laws of physics will prevent it. Maybe also the collective unconscious is a singularity? The God itself. The first dimension, where everything exist beyound comprehension in a single point, like a projector projecting "images" or universes into higher & higher dimensions ad the best way to describe it.
    So far I really dig the remedy universe the developers are putting together, I have a deep interest in multiverse, quatom physics & fantasy magic from many IPs like Elder Scrolls. Seeing a becoming franchise where science & magic go hand in hand, this type of genre needs to be explored more where us sci-fi & fanasty fans being polar oppersites can get together on.

      At least, that's my best definition I can come up with on the spot. When you try and do away with all the "pattern recognition" fallacies and the phenomena survives, you are left with a little Hello from the fractal universe.

He was wrong on some things, but decades ahead of his time on others. I've read a lot of Freud in addition to graduate-level neuroscience and it's stunning how intelligent and ahead of his time he was. We all have been heavily influenced by Freud on a cultural level in ways people don't even realize because so many of his new ideas were obviously true in hindsight and had incredible explanatory power. Clinicians are learning that they need to return to Freud in various ways because newer styles of therapy that are more goal-oriented produce worse results. I just recently read a study where they were trying to get high-risk for psychosis adolescents into a cognitive behavioral therapy or an open psychoanalytic type therapy condition and people only went psychotic in the CBT group.
      People take, like, one class of psychology in high school and then hop on TH-cam to call big innovators "the most lizard brain psychologist" like they actually have taken any kind of critical look and aren't actually just restating the opinions of hack teachers in low-level classes.

    This is SLIGHTLY incorrect.. Alan didn't just "Hear" of the FBC.. he WROTE them into existence. He wrote it all, himself, created a Hero, a reason, an enemy, a path to freedom. Alan/Thomas is the sole reason Control happened in the first place, he's the reason Jesse exists, Dylan, and this is backed by the fact that Alan's story character, Alex Casey, is now a living, breathing FBI agent looking into the FBC and Cauldron Lake/Alan himself.
    Cauldron Lake can create reality out of fiction. :3

      Also, Quantum Dream definitely factors in, Dylan mentions Mr. Door, another moniker for Lance Reddick's character, and there are several images, and documents related to the events of Quantum Dream. Control 2 was just announced, and with Alan Wake 2 coming, I cannot wait to see where this all goes.

    Only thing I'm trying to figure out is if the whole "Wake is Zane" thing is real and intended, why wasn't "Zane" voiced by Jim McCaffrey in the DLC? They had him in the original Alan Wake and they had him in Control (playing Trench) so I wonder if it was just a scheduling thing or if they purposefully phoned in Zane's voice for that one scene in the DLC.

    Isn't it ironic how both speaker and listener believe that the speaker is speaking profoundly when speaking nonsense? This whole presentation is a subjective emotionalist foray into imagination, with no basis in fact, and yet many listeners will be convinced that such rhetoric constitutes knowledge, intelligence, or wisdom. However, there is no content here but arbitrary postulations rationalistically disconnected from any referents in reality. Fictional writing can be of value to man as entertainment for relaxation or enjoyment but when people choose to believe in fiction as if it referred to phenomena in existence, it ceases to serve man and becomes a blockage to his consciousness. Mysticism is the employment of emotion as a standard of determining truth. Truth can only be reached by observation with explanation. With the explanation conforming to observation at every step. Fact and fiction must be clearly delimited otherwise we end up with the nonsense of mainstream philosophy, psychology, etcetera, with presenters like Max Derrat. Influencing an audience into irrational ideologies is not a service, but rather a hazard. This presentation is only of value in understanding the mass hysteria known as postmodernism.

    Pretty interesting. Thank you. But I think you are too early to claim that the DLC actually confirms Zane=Wake. First of all, it’s not the first time someone wore Alan’s face *cough* Mr. Scratch. Second, This House of Dreams pretty much states that Zane went into his own universe with Barbara long before the Alan Wake game. And what appears as Thomas Zane in the diving suit is actually the Bright Presence entity, the sworn enemy of the Dark Presence. Third, this Zane in the DLC acts suspiciously and completely different from Diver Zane. He seemingly wants to escape with Alan, makes claims to take care of Scratch and what is the biggest flag, he says he is a filmmaker. While we clearly remember Tom the Poet. And it’s intentional. For a moment Jesse says she remembers Tom is a poet (she even knows some of his poems), but then she corrects herself he is a filmmaker. Whatever is going on isn’t way clear to make any claims. And it’s a big question if that doppelgänger is the Bright Presence or the Diver from the Alan Wake game. Its excuse that the Diver is some role completely contradicts what we know. Zane was an avid diver, such that the Bright Falls’ residents nicknamed the tiny island he owned on Cauldron Lake as Diver's Isle. Someone is confusing Alan in the state he is in. And I’m sure we will know the answer in the next story.
