Loathe is the opposite of sleep token, they take their main roots in djenty riffs n such but the risks they take actually make sense and their sound especially on I let it in is just amazing, there is so much going on but it’s produced greatly, instead of feeling big and empty it’s big and full. Pop and metal can totally work together. I think Voyager is fun and my favorite Devin Townsend album is Addicted, which is almost platonically pop-metal. This album just seemed to combine the most cliche’d and toothless tropes from the genres it pulled from in an uninteresting way.

    • @cianhudder7499

    • @nu-metalfan2654

@topofsm. PoP and Metal can go extremely well together, it’s just most bands don’t do it well, or just use the wrong styles of PoP or Metal.
I think the classic and traditional style of Metal doesn’t mix well with PoP at all though. The speedy riffs and guitar solos don’t mix well with certain grooves imo.
I also think the modern, Metalcore and Djent style of Metal doesn’t really mix well with PoP.
The styles of Metal that would most go really well with PoP would be Alternative Metal, and Nu-Metal, I think those styles of Metal with the bounce riffs would complement some PoP really well.
For example take some of KoRn’s riffs and add in Kesha’s vocals from her early stuff and it would probably sound great.
You also have to find the right style of PoP as stuff like Adele, Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith etc etc I don’t think would mix well with Metal at all.
Stuff like Britney Spears, early Kesha and the like I think would mesh really well with heavy bounce riffs.

my take on the production is that nothing punches through, everything feels so equal in the mix
like when i hear albini touch an album i recognize it instantly.
listening to the new liturgy and i am weeping joy about how punchy those drums are.
i also pick out black metal as genre where everything bleeds together for a wall of noise, a whirlwind of instruments into one steady drone is intentional, so hearing those drums spike through the mix feels so cathartic. same can be said about something like oranssi pazuzu's 2020 release, the way it crashes side to side in your ear is only adds to the experience, really amping up the "whirlwind" element and keeping you swayng through the confusion. hypnotic.
djent is a genre all about technicality and skill, so to hear nothing stand out is just "missing the whole point"
Edit: lmao brad brings up liturgy seconds after i post this, i was really just drawing a comparison to albini first and foremost

    • @Arcanineisthebest
      @Arcanineisthebest ปีที่แล้ว +1

Wow, well, the pop-oriented prodiction is the only thing carrying this through. The vocals punch through and shine perfectly constantly, it's so vocal-heavy it's almost a mistake...are we listening to the same band? , the other elements are blended together to appear like an extension of the voice, maybe that's why you think it's muddy? But that's their trick. Every gimmicky band has a trick, this one is theirs. To design every single element as an arrow pointing at the vocals. The musicality is watered down as hell, nothing interestin going on and the vocals are the same as any show off-ey dude from the 90s. Why are they so famous then? Why are they exploding the way they are? It's 10000% cause of the production making you feel he's an amazing singer. What else could be? Their genre bending? Lmao even normies are cringing at the hip hop parts, you've probably seen the reactions.
This is not a djent band... This is an alt rock pop band that listened to Pink Floyd once. The downtuned guitars and screams are very popular to sprinkle in here and there in alternative and indie music, but perhaps that's confusing all the normies and metal dudes who think downtuned guitars and screams are just a metal thing when here it's used for ambience. AND they're mixed like part of the ambience too, they're not front and center like the music you are used to.
I don't know why I took so long just to say that, yes they suck, but also you're wrong, kind of objectively.

P sure we're on the same page here as I was alluding to the fact that this fails in the djent category.
I tend to fail to know what's popular and what's not. I often think my bands are mainstream until i crawl out from under my rock and talk to peeps. Idk, not much worth to put in it. Not much to touch on there.
I personally dislike clean vocals and prefer more dissonance in most music I listen to. tbh, probs why i love albini productions. c:

production on this album feels more popish where you need the instruments to have a much wider range frequency wise, but metal already has enough instruments to balance the sound even with no/very raw production.
so what this album really suffers from is an identity crisis. it feels like at times it wants to be either a pop album or a metal album, no interesting inbetween like it’s supposed to be

Pop and metal can work, case in point: Poppy. I Disagree is an album that makes that combo work, because it’s not just pop and metal, it’s very specific blending of pop and metal sub-genres that Poppy found common ground with in her songwriting. Sleep Token just jams rnb and metalcore together without bothering to find that common ground, and it comes out awkward and lame. I Disagree in comparison is alternative metal and power pop, industrial metal and dream pop, it’s looking for genres that can actually work together, and the end result is an album that makes the combo seem natural.

my thoughts on the vagueness of the lyrics as someone who’s written songs for 9 years: it’s not so much that the lyrics are vague, but that they’re written in a way that makes them sound as if they’re unsure of what they’re saying and the message that they want to get across. if they’re a band with a lot of lore and want to make a concept project, they need to solidify that concept, to be sure of what they’re talking about, and to know what they want their audience to receive. the writing (and the vocals) is what bothers me the most as someone who’s mainly a lyricist when it comes to music. it was just so clear that they didn’t really know what they were trying to say, and it feels almost disrespectful to their audience that they didn’t feel the effort was worth it to actually be certain of the concept that they were basing all that writing on. and it really comes through that they were uncertain really comes through.

The best way to describe this album and band is that it’s meant for people who really aren’t into metal but can get into it by listening and relating to this music. I don’t listen to any metal bands at all but this album popped up and I really liked it. I know that’s also the main reason why a lot of fans of metal don’t like this band but because it can be received and liked by a wider audience it probably will make this band and album massive in the coming months and years.

    • @Feverm00n

I think bands that serve that purpose are so immensely valuable. I finally managed to enjoy elements of metal I used to find unlistenable thanks to Lorna Shore’s latest album.
And I was highly motivated to learn to enjoy metal because I’ve loved metal(and/or hardcore)-adjacent music for most of my life.
Transitional genres and artists are extremely helpful, imo. I definitely wouldn’t be starting down the metal rabbit hole without a number of artists and genres that purists probably find cringey & revolting, haha.

As a huge metalhead, I think there are a lot of solid songs from Sleep Token that have an ominous, enjoyable, and heavy feel to them. They just aren't on this album.. I think it's more that metal fans generally don't like when a band gets popular RESULTING in these kinds of changes when it comes to their sound. They sound like they're experimenting in this album, but they're experimenting with the kind of music that a lot of metalheads generally don't like. It sounds super pop-ish and IMO doesn't line up well with the -genuinely- metal af concept that the band is supposed to follow.
I don't really care tbh bc I just save the songs I like and move on, but I can understand why other metalheads would turn their nose up at how Sleep Token is moving forward with their style.

Is metalcore considered a subgenre of hardcore? Or is it not a subgenre because it’s distinct enough to just be kind of in its own world then?

I think I might try to listen a bit more of this album on my own, but the first impressions it gave me is that it can go from being "Suicide Squad Official Motion Picture Soundtrack" to "Doom Eternal OST" out of nowhere. And I agree with someone who said it feels like the Tiktok-ification of metal, like it feels really cheaply structured (with quick payoffs and vague lyrics) and the singing feels like it's it made to be lip-synced to by. Still, the genre mixing is interesting but I think it's not well done, and the thing about the mastering and mixing is a valid criticism that brad made cause it doesn't let you really immersive yourself into the music.
