I think the review of this album on Apple Music is a refreshing read that doesn’t kiss Metallica’s ass, "St. Anger is certainly not Metallica’s best album musically, but it is their most compelling album psychologically. There's plenty of great metal and hardcore albums with trashcan production.
The problem here is that the band takes turns either sounding like generic groove metal or generic alt metal, this being coupled with lyrics that a 15 year old would write and no solos is what makes it truly garbage in my eyes, and better production would not fix those problems

It kind of was. Not that Metallica stopped making music or that they haven't had further influence, especially regarding DMCA and music on the internet unfortunately, but their relevance in the metal scene was nearly completely nixed after St. Anger. They'll always have the legacy of their first five albums but only reason many people still listen to anything new they put out at this point is to see if they're still making bad music.
EDIT: also the fact that they've only made three new albums in the 20 years since St. Anger, compared to seven albums in the 20 years preceding it

There's a really high quality remake of this by just one guy here on yt and with a normal sounding snare and slightly updated production a lot of the songs actually graduate to decent quality, notably the title track. To me this album's biggest sin is that its the most glaring example of metallica's biggest weakness: tone-deaf songwriting. They tried to capture the lightning in a bottle that was the nu-metal wave of the late 90s and early 2000s and in doing so revealed just how out of touch they were. Weirdly enough though, the songs have actually aged rather well, which isn't hard to see if you look up recent live performances of the title track. From a comment I read listening to that remake for the first time, "If this had been some unknown band's first album it would've been a huge success for them, but the reality is this came from Metallica."
Edit: its also worth noting that this was when it became obvious that metallica was surrounding themselves with yes men in the studio

I'm glad I never took the risk to go through this album and get to vicariously experience this sonic torture while getting some laughs out of it. Thanks dude ;)

Highly recommend checking out the St. Anger cover by a band called Gurschach. They are from the Bay Area in California and they actually make the song not only listenable, but jammable

I relistened to St. Anger about a month ago because I wanted to get into Metallica's discography--I liked the first three albums a lot and then decided to return to it. It was both a better experience and a worse one at the same time. Better because a few songs positively stuck out and I wasn't really bothered by the snares. Worse because I forgot I had skipped half way through most songs and forgot how excruciatingly long the project was for each song. For a band that typically has some of the best long-run tracks, this was a pain to get through again, WITHOUT skipping.

Can’t believe y’all voted this album just to hear Brad trash it when he could’ve listened to Koi No Yokan a deftones masterpiece 😭

Maybe it can still happen. That album is a spiritual experience.

I love how Brad's body was trying to defend him from the music by knocking his ass out halfway through the album.

Watching the documentary changed my perspective on this album. I like what it stands for and how it fits within Metallica's history. It had to be made. Could it sound way better? Hell yes. The drum sound (how does one go from Black Album's drum sound to this monstrosity is beyond me), song length (some of the sections were legit copy-pasted in pro tools just to make the songs longer) are the main problems. The "live in studio" version kind of fixes the first one. There were a few guys who rerecorded the album back in 2015 I think and it's pretty decent.
Unnamed Feeling is to this day my favorite Metallica songs and I wish it was constructed in other way, because the lyrics are amazing (besides the "been here before" part)
