I love a science breakdown! My vocal coach did the same with me as the science stuff helped me understand what my body was doing/needed to do, and the better I understood it the easier I found it to recognise the feeling within the body and replicate it

I normally don't subscribe to reactors who are listening to performances that they have heard before, but you are different (along with two other reactors) because you highlight things I have never heard before. I have seen over a hundred reactions to this song (I am not exaggerating here), and none of them have pointed out some of the things in Avi's performance that you picked out here. Kudos to you, another subscription and a fervent wish that you will react to more PTX performances.

something I really appreciate about pentatonix that NO other group I've seen able to recreate is their ability to mimic synth and distortion in these kinds of songs because of their precision and melded arrangements
Kevin and Avi are so amazing together. Definitely standouts. On The Sing Off the judges could not stop talking about their drum and bass section and how impressive they are. They sound like a dozen guys the sound is so full.
No matter what I can't help but pick Avi out of the songs. Just phenomenal voice. Ilways felt there were two kinds of bass. Those who can sing the notes and those who were the notes. And Avi is definitely the second. No matter what he sings he still has that rich quality that makes it all the sweeter when he does dip to his lower range.

Singapore, Star Vista is prob the BEST thing I've heard & experienced EVER.. from anyone!!! Choral intro with perfect harmonies, gut punching bass & overtones, inhuman level beat boxing/percussion & ohhhh, Mitch, wow! Their timing & that syncopation.. unreal!! Have to prepare for full body chills every time, it's off the charts nuts!!!

I read somewhere that apparently Kevin uses a lot of inhale perc techniques to allow longer phrases. It would be, I guess, the beat boxer version of circular breathing.
Yeah K.O. has actually shared that even back when creating celloboxing when 17yrs old performing in Carnegie Hall that during his beatboxing he really is breathing both in and out so doesn't sound like he's "breathing"... his rhythm sense is insane! Avi is a natural basso profundo I /love/ his timbre! I don't know any other singer that has his rich timbre and can do overtones!

right?! Ive seen this video hundreds of times but have an entirely new appreciation for it after watching this. The singing from PTX is always great but so often its avi/matt/kevin that do things my brain just cant comprehend.
I honestly really appreciate as a non-singer all that you pointed out! Every technical thing you were able to explain and really pulling apart some of Avi’s notes was incredible for me. I have a hard time sometimes hearing the different notes he hits and you helped me understand more of his skill!
Pentatonix and Ben Bram arranged this one, themselves. The arrangement is actually what their Grammy is for, not the performance or video. The Grammy name was changed from Best Instrumental Arrangement to Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Capella *that year*... presumably so they could get the nomination. Could you do New Rules x Are You That Somebody? Matt is their bass in that one and it really shows how Kevin and Matt also mesh phenomenally while doing the Timbaland beat. When you were talking about how you don't need the flashy bass tricks, my mind automatically went to Matt.
Avi's solo in this was so short, and yet is one of the highlights (LOWlights?) of this piece.. and my favorite part of the whole thing. Thanks for taking the time to elaborate; it was worth every break. You have to listen to this dozens of times to catch all the amazing detail and hard work they put into it. I never picked out the reverse perk/kick you mention @4:00 until just before watching your review. Cool that you caught it too.

I love how, although each one of the team has a totally star quality voice, they are all willing to sing as a group! No one is pushing themselves forward. They go forward and backward depending on what’s good for the arrangement they have worked out for the song! I mean they ALL have the ability to be the “ front “ of the group, don’t they, yet they are willing to blend! Absolutely perfect! Love them!
Normally I have a hard time lasting through a comprehensive analysis of a Pentatonic music video due to pandemic attention disorder. Yours was very different from others that I have watched because your speech pattern is relaxed and not rushed. *Ben Bram* was the chief arranger of this PTX Daft Punk medley; he's also the person who brought Avi in last minute to the Sing Off competition as he knew the (already assembled) trio still needed a bass and beatboxer. Kevin arrived similarly at the eleventh hour - they weren't even a group until the day before the Sing Off audition/

I really, really love how you explain the complexity of what the vocalists are doing with their incredible instruments! I hardly understand a word you are saying, but it convinces me more and more how lucky we are to have these five together...even after Avi left and Matt came in. I remain very biased toward Avi, but who on this earth could have come in with Matt's talent? I also really appreciate how you talk about arrangement. We get so lost in the talent of the performers that we forget the talent of arranger(s), who have to also know the talent of each vocalist to put together THE perfect arrangement!

I'd be SO curious to see what you think of Pentatonix's Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy for Avi. The more operatic sound of it is really interesting, and also absolutely insane for some of his parts. I'm not a singer at all, but I feel like just hearing it sounds so difficult haha

I love your point about how they are all working double time to fill out the sound the way they do. For 5 people they sound like an ensemble live. The amount of sound from these 5 is incredible.

FYI, ring lights have been around for ages, but generally weren't widely available in affordable sizes. If you look at the video for Dionne Farris, "I Know," from 1994 you'll see the ring light in her eyes. They are popular because they give soft, even lighting. Very flattering!
Peter, I watched this video of you when it first came out in 2021 which was shortly after I "discovered" Pentatonix. Loved it then and I think loved it even more on this rewatch.
This is by far the best reaction video I’ve seen of both PTX and this song in particular. I learnt so much, enjoyed every minute. New subbie here and I will watch your back catalogue immediately 😀 you picked out so much detail that my eyes and ears couldn’t. You’d explanations are spot on, get as technical as you like!
If there is one Pentatonix arrangement where Avi and Mitch seem to be enjoying themselves more than the rest, this is the one. Scott seems to have that extra smile too.
There are so many PTX reactors out there now (possibly rivaling baking on the hot quarantine activity list?) but it seems like the majority just listen, maybe ask us some questions that feed the comment section, say they’re amazing, and leave it at that. A handful of my favorites are the ones who appreciate all the technical intricacies of their singing and tell me why, especially when they point out things I haven’t noticed in all of my obsessive listening. This just put you on that short list. I can’t subscribe because I was already subscribed for your singing, but this was tops and I really hope you do more!

You may already know it, but I'd be very interested in seeing you react to their cover of Gold (original sung by Kiiara). It's stripped back production-wise and just an all around impressive arrangement - Mitch's vocal control and range, Avi and Kevin absolutely in sync with each other, and Kirstin and Scott providing the perfect accompaniment. It's even more impressive compared to the heavily-produced original.

Great review! The first time I watched their video singing this I paused it so many times b/c I couldn't believe what I was hearing and Avi's bass made it overwhelming to take in all at once. I was tingling b/c it was so "deep" on so many levels. Kevin has a drum kit in his mouth, amazing... and Mitch, Kirstin and Scott kept me pushing through.
It's no wonder this got them a Grammy Award. This song is "Other Worldly" and hard to believe that it was completely done at Kevin and Avi's apartment and edited on the kitchen counter and NOT in a proper studio. That just blows my mind!! The end of this song is pure madness but so awesome. Check out their "Carol of the Bells" really great and vocals are all over the board and a lot to break down. If you want just a fun mash up, check out 90's Dance Medley. It gives you an appreciation of how seamlessly they go from one song to another and never miss a beat, a word, a note, a breath... OK, never miss ANYTHING.

When you were explaining the vocal chords having to come back together and why it can be hard with certain syllables made me realize that that’s how tongue twisters work or how some words you can’t say right after eachother fast.

Thank you SO MUCH for explaining that what n makes a great bass singer isn’t just how low they can go. I have seen these bass battle videos, and I’m not judging or pitting one guy over the other- but it just seems like they chose the winner by whomever can hit the lowest. Whereas I think warmth and tambre- and in PTX specifically (with Avi and Kevin) is that they don’t sing to show off. Just like you said, Avi could go lower off he wanted to, but it wouldn’t fit the song. PTX obviously wants to push a cappella more and more mainstream and when you just throw low notes into a song, and it kind of sticks out, it sounds kind of campy or cheesy. Plus, Kevin is such a true musician. He doesn’t show off either and he definitely could- is all about the music and song
I agree, and to take it a step further, I'm so glad Peter that you mentioned that the depth of a bass isn't always about how low you can go. The arrangement of the song and the genre have a very large influence on it, and the role of the bassist in a group like this isn't just to sing his part, but to thoughtfully come up with arrangements that fit the song. There have been so many times in other a capella groups where the bassist sings something in a very low octave that is inappropriate for the song and just doesn't fit. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. It isn't about showing off the incredible range of the bass - it is about how all the parts fit together in a the chosen song to sound cohesive.
Yes that is what has turned me off from voiceplay. I think they’re creative and talented but it seems that Geoff is always trying to show off his bass. It comes off sounding cheesy to me and also not pleasant to my ear, but of course their fans fall for it thinking that he must be the best since he can go the lowest out of the a cappella groups. You know you hardly ever even see Matt in these bass battles since some don’t consider him a true bass since he can’t go as low as Tim, Avi or Geoff but his singing voice along with Avi’s is just so much more pleasant when they sing solo parts. They’re both smooth and crystal clear.

I've never looked up why Kevin has glasses and not contacts with the rest. I like to think that it's not that he didn't want to touch his eyeball, but that Kevin in those contacts was just too powerful for the world to handle. Avi destroyed a 3 block radius.

Singapore, Star Vista is prob the BEST thing I've heard & experienced EVER.. from anyone!!! Choral intro with perfect harmonies, gut punching bass & overtones, inhuman level beat boxing/percussion & ohhhh, Mitch, wow! Their timing & that syncopation.. unreal!! Have to prepare for full body chills every time, it's off the charts nuts!!!

I read somewhere that apparently Kevin uses a lot of inhale perc techniques to allow longer phrases. It would be, I guess, the beat boxer version of circular breathing.
Yeah K.O. has actually shared that even back when creating celloboxing when 17yrs old performing in Carnegie Hall that during his beatboxing he really is breathing both in and out so doesn't sound like he's "breathing"... his rhythm sense is insane!
Avi is a natural basso profundo I /love/ his timbre! I don't know any other singer that has his rich timbre and can do overtones!

right?! Ive seen this video hundreds of times but have an entirely new appreciation for it after watching this. The singing from PTX is always great but so often its avi/matt/kevin that do things my brain just cant comprehend.
I honestly really appreciate as a non-singer all that you pointed out! Every technical thing you were able to explain and really pulling apart some of Avi’s notes was incredible for me. I have a hard time sometimes hearing the different notes he hits and you helped me understand more of his skill!
Pentatonix and Ben Bram arranged this one, themselves. The arrangement is actually what their Grammy is for, not the performance or video. The Grammy name was changed from Best Instrumental Arrangement to Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Capella *that year*... presumably so they could get the nomination.
Could you do New Rules x Are You That Somebody? Matt is their bass in that one and it really shows how Kevin and Matt also mesh phenomenally while doing the Timbaland beat. When you were talking about how you don't need the flashy bass tricks, my mind automatically went to Matt.

One thing I hear that hardly ever gets mentioned is how Avi makes the sound like a bassist running his/her fingers up and down the fretboard.
Avi's solo in this was so short, and yet is one of the highlights (LOWlights?) of this piece.. and my favorite part of the whole thing. Thanks for taking the time to elaborate; it was worth every break. You have to listen to this dozens of times to catch all the amazing detail and hard work they put into it. I never picked out the reverse perk/kick you mention @4:00 until just before watching your review. Cool that you caught it too.

I love how, although each one of the team has a totally star quality voice, they are all willing to sing as a group! No one is pushing themselves forward. They go forward and backward depending on what’s good for the arrangement they have worked out for the song! I mean they ALL have the ability to be the “ front “ of the group, don’t they, yet they are willing to blend! Absolutely perfect! Love them!
Normally I have a hard time lasting through a comprehensive analysis of a Pentatonic music video due to pandemic attention disorder. Yours was very different from others that I have watched because your speech pattern is relaxed and not rushed. I glad I found this video because I learned a lot and heard things that my untrained ear did not detect before. Thanks for the great video and keeping focused longer then 3 minutes!

I don't know if other Pentaholics watch reactors looking for the emotional response to PTX's skills, but I do know it sometimes draws me. On the OTHER hand, listening to a reactor who has the technical background to share appreciation for, and explain to us laypersons why, PTX is amazing is fantastic! Thank you so much!
Avi and Kevin definitely work so well together. Avi would often do supplemental sound effects, and sing bass at the same time.

*Ben Bram* was the chief arranger of this PTX Daft Punk medley; he's also the person who brought Avi in last minute to the Sing Off competition as he knew the (already assembled) trio still needed a bass and beatboxer. Kevin arrived similarly at the eleventh hour - they weren't even a group until the day before the Sing Off audition/

I really, really love how you explain the complexity of what the vocalists are doing with their incredible instruments! I hardly understand a word you are saying, but it convinces me more and more how lucky we are to have these five together...even after Avi left and Matt came in. I remain very biased toward Avi, but who on this earth could have come in with Matt's talent? I also really appreciate how you talk about arrangement. We get so lost in the talent of the performers that we forget the talent of arranger(s), who have to also know the talent of each vocalist to put together THE perfect arrangement!

I think you are my favorite commentator on Pentatonix. Your musical knowledge not withstanding, you have intelligent comments that aren't slathered in TH-cam slang or "Bro" language. You hear what I hear and are the first person to review this video who caught the same things that I did about Avi and about Kevin. I think that they are greatly underappreciated. With Avi gone and Matt taking over if you haven't listened to new rules yet you should. I know you would love the interaction between the vocal perc and bass. It would be fun to watch you break down one of their Song Off performances and compare it to a recent one to show us the growth. Daft Punk was a Grammy Award winning performance for PTX way back in the day and even so it's so incredible!!

I love your point about how they are all working double time to fill out the sound the way they do. For 5 people they sound like an ensemble live. The amount of sound from these 5 is incredible.

FYI, ring lights have been around for ages, but generally weren't widely available in affordable sizes. If you look at the video for Dionne Farris, "I Know," from 1994 you'll see the ring light in her eyes. They are popular because they give soft, even lighting. Very flattering!

There are so many PTX reactors out there now (possibly rivaling baking on the hot quarantine activity list?) but it seems like the majority just listen, maybe ask us some questions that feed the comment section, say they’re amazing, and leave it at that. A handful of my favorites are the ones who appreciate all the technical intricacies of their singing and tell me why, especially when they point out things I haven’t noticed in all of my obsessive listening. This just put you on that short list. I can’t subscribe because I was already subscribed for your singing, but this was tops and I really hope you do more!

You may already know it, but I'd be very interested in seeing you react to their cover of Gold (original sung by Kiiara). It's stripped back production-wise and just an all around impressive arrangement - Mitch's vocal control and range, Avi and Kevin absolutely in sync with each other, and Kirstin and Scott providing the perfect accompaniment. It's even more impressive compared to the heavily-produced original.

Great review! The first time I watched their video singing this I paused it so many times b/c I couldn't believe what I was hearing and Avi's bass made it overwhelming to take in all at once. I was tingling b/c it was so "deep" on so many levels. Kevin has a drum kit in his mouth, amazing... and Mitch, Kirstin and Scott kept me pushing through.
It's no wonder this got them a Grammy Award. This song is "Other Worldly" and hard to believe that it was completely done at Kevin and Avi's apartment and edited on the kitchen counter and NOT in a proper studio. That just blows my mind!! The end of this song is pure madness but so awesome. Check out their "Carol of the Bells" really great and vocals are all over the board and a lot to break down. If you want just a fun mash up, check out 90's Dance Medley. It gives you an appreciation of how seamlessly they go from one song to another and never miss a beat, a word, a note, a breath... OK, never miss ANYTHING.
I think they even recorded part of it in the bathroom. I will have to check. But, I know that this post drop from their record deal and pre RCA. Definitely done in their apartments.

Thank you SO MUCH for explaining that what n makes a great bass singer isn’t just how low they can go. I have seen these bass battle videos, and I’m not judging or pitting one guy over the other- but it just seems like they chose the winner by whomever can hit the lowest. Whereas I think warmth and tambre- and in PTX specifically (with Avi and Kevin) is that they don’t sing to show off. Just like you said, Avi could go lower off he wanted to, but it wouldn’t fit the song. PTX obviously wants to push a cappella more and more mainstream and when you just throw low notes into a song, and it kind of sticks out, it sounds kind of campy or cheesy. Plus, Kevin is such a true musician. He doesn’t show off either and he definitely could- is all about the music and song
I agree, and to take it a step further, I'm so glad Peter that you mentioned that the depth of a bass isn't always about how low you can go. The arrangement of the song and the genre have a very large influence on it, and the role of the bassist in a group like this isn't just to sing his part, but to thoughtfully come up with arrangements that fit the song. There have been so many times in other a capella groups where the bassist sings something in a very low octave that is inappropriate for the song and just doesn't fit. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. It isn't about showing off the incredible range of the bass - it is about how all the parts fit together in a the chosen song to sound cohesive.
Yes that is what has turned me off from voiceplay. I think they’re creative and talented but it seems that Geoff is always trying to show off his bass. It comes off sounding cheesy to me and also not pleasant to my ear, but of course their fans fall for it thinking that he must be the best since he can go the lowest out of the a cappella groups. You know you hardly ever even see Matt in these bass battles since some don’t consider him a true bass since he can’t go as low as Tim, Avi or Geoff but his singing voice along with Avi’s is just so much more pleasant when they sing solo parts. They’re both smooth and crystal clear.

I've never looked up why Kevin has glasses and not contacts with the rest. I like to think that it's not that he didn't want to touch his eyeball, but that Kevin in those contacts was just too powerful for the world to handle. Avi destroyed a 3 block radius.
