    This video series is an absolute masterpiece. I played this game for the first time in 2023. It freaked me out so much that I put it down half way through. I then discovered this video and the explanation of the lore just won me over. I continued playing, then also watched this series to the end. This playlist really should get millions of views for how well it is done! Even people who have never or will never play this game would appreciate this, I think. Well done, @Gameological Dig!

    The thing about SOMA unlike the previous Frictional games is that it actually makes you think. I'd argue that both the Penumbra series and Amnesia series were more outright scary than SOMA is in terms of gameplay but neither of the previous titles come even close to instilling you with the same sense of existential dread that SOMA does. (spoilers below)
    It's everything from the fact that humanity is extinct, to Simon's original predicament at the start of the game, to the monsters who were all regular people at some point some of which can even be found and named in Pathos-II's staff registry, to the WAU's misguided attempts at keeping humanity alive in whatever form it can, to finding out that you and everyone else are not strictly speaking human anymore, to the seemingly hopless and maybe even futile attempt at launching the ARK just to leave SOME trace of humanity after we pass, to the irrationality of humanity as shown with what happens to original Catherine, to the ending and Simon's fate which is a whole new form of horror in and of itself.
    SOMA may be a pretty scary game gameplaywise but it's true HORROR comes from it's story and the world and setting that it builds for the player. It's one of those games that sticks with you, even long past the point where you've finished playing it.

    Really cool video. I watched this after I beat the game and it pieces the narrative together in a really nice way that wasn't able to while playing. All the information presented here is consolidated to provide a much more clear picture of what exactly happened to the world and characters in SOMA. This attention to detail is impressive and a great complement to the game itself once you've beaten it. Can't wait to listen to future episodes and really delve deeper into SOMA and its mysteries. Wow this is great, I was only wanting to know how long it takes to get out of your system but found a pretty great story about it instead. Who'd have thunk

    I don't even think the robots are simulating people. Eg. if the WAU scanned Carl's brain and then initiated it, or adopted it, then that robot really WAS Carl. Simon really was Simon. Poor Simon, he never quite grasped the whole situation. I'll keep watching these videos hoping that you'll have some explanation to how these robots could speak, in their scanned person's own voices no less? Unless that too is what Catherine tried to explain to Simon, of how we manifest feelings of being the same as we were, idk?

    I'm surprised that Amy (or Karl) didn't go insane stuck there for a year, though maybe the WAU also had some way to maintain mental faculties.
    Also, kind of an oversight by them that they didn't account for the WAU reanimating something inside their chain of pneumatic seals.

    Shit is so fucking depressing man, the more you progress in the game the more you know that there is no “help” coming, no salvation, there is literally nothing and no one left. Copies of humans fighting for other copies of humans against other copies of humans this is so bleak.

    I want to just think the bomb shelters worked. And everyone was just okay. And the whole game was a nightmare... but it wasn’t... nothing worked... everything was left to rot in a limbo.

    The only thing that sucks about playing SOMA is you will never be able to play it for the first time again.

  • @atanamorell2
    @atanamorell2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Lol..I just dropped by to say how oddly calming I find this game to watch. Then I saw the first, well-liked comment that "SOMA is so depressing". I mean, sure. But story aside, it's one long, very cool ride through a beautiful liminal space. Both the uncanniness of exploring mostly abandoned human living spaces and artifacts at the depths of the ocean and the fact that humanity is making a huge transition between physical existence and a digital reality combine well together for metaphysical flights of fancy.
