BenQ HT2050A DLP Projector | Optical Assembly Cleaning

  • The BenQ HT2050A in the video was sent in after the owner was able to repair most of it but ran into an odd visual issue. No matter where he cleaned it seemed to make no difference. After some digging, I found that there was a small piece of debris that just happened to be in the best possible spot to cause this issue.
    I could have sworn I recorded the original disassembly and testing but I don't know what happened to it. Many times I "pre check" something just to make sure I am presenting it properly but I always record the work just in case I see something interesting. If I ever find the footage, I will update this video, but if you need the disassembly steps for an HT2050/HT2050A or HT2150, check this link. • BenQ HT2150ST DLP Proj... (HT2150).

    Ahaha a piece of hair! I've faced this issue a lot of times, but was not a piece of hair, but a burnt light tunnel on the corners or all the mirror effect from those glasses disappeared. Symptoms are those shadows or dim image.

    Hey, do you ever test the results on a black screen? Because to me dust is most noticeable when there is not much light. And it tends to ruin my experience when I can see dust blobs in darker scenes.

    Hey Frank, thanks for your amazing video! I'm facin an issue you may have encountered before: after replacing the bulb the lamp LED remains solid red (i tried with two diffrent brand new buls). Any idea what can cause that? the lamp is connected but seems something is wrong...Thanks for your support :)

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd guess a color wheel or ballast issue. I have videos on troubleshooting both. You can search color wheel and ballast for the videos.

    One little fibre can cause so much distraction. This would have driven me mad and I would have to try to remove the blemish, my minor OCD would not let me ignore it....lol.

    Thanks for the video! I think I'm just about ready to try clean my own projector. One question: is there a reason not to use a can of compressed air? I don't have a puffer, but do have several cans of compressed air. Thanks!

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The reason I dissuade people from using canned air is that it can cause the surface to get very cool if the can tips too much. That can cause damage to polymer lenses and other surfaces. Also it can cause moisture to build up.
      Canned air does work just fine if you are careful but lets be honest. Most people would not pay attention and cause problems and then blame me :)
      I would also suggest using a clean/dry paint brush or other soft bristle brush to loosen the dust. I find that a brush, a vacuum and then some compressed air works really well. The things to watch out for are pushing dust into the optics or over-speeding a fan when blowing air on it. If you take your time you should be successful.

    I prefer Epson..there very high quality easy to work on etc…

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      maybe at one point. These days they are terrible. They last 5 years if you are lucky, no reasonable out of warranty parts support and their own repair prices are ridiculous They made the optics so that you have to break them apart to replace the polarizers. Their flat flex cables are made to plug in once and that is it. They are literally building them to be unrepairable. . I think epson is a terrible brand anymore.

    I Turned on my ht2050a last night and it starts up and I get a solid red “lamp “ light ….and absolutely no projector bulb light coming out……so I’m “assuming “ the bulb has just blown??? …it’s only about 1.5 years old with not a lot of use i never got a warning message or nothing….I’m thinking of replacing the bulb ….250$ at benq but the one in your link is 135$ ….I saw your video on aftermarket bulbs and I was wondering how you feel about the bulb assembly in your link? ..is it a soiled replacement?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suspect your diagnosis is correct. I always suggest the lamp first since it is the easiest to change and easiest to return if its not the lamp. The link I have is to a good aftermarket lamp. They use the correct brand bare bulb(osram) and have the correct IR/UV block filter. I actually run the same brand(different model) in my own projector and it works great. The lamp assemblies to watch out for are the lamps advertised on Amazon. That is a literal mine field of garbage in my experience. Since you are out of manufacturer warranty, the lamp in my link would work very well for you. Don't forget to use the coupon code if you decide to buy it! Also, thanks for watching the other video, I love to hear people being more educated on this product. You can save money and still get quality if you know what to look for. Cheers!

      It is probably still in the DMD area. You wont see spots if there is dust in the lens and the lens is pretty well sealed anyway.

    Frank I have a beloved 65 inch HP DLP I bought in 2006 and have used 6-8hrs a day almost every day (Sometimes more sometimes less) I have gone through 4 bulbs, 2 days ago when I turned it on its picture was alll Black and white no color all and sources are affected HDMI Componet and Anttena. all the menu's and remote functions Just everything is in Black and white. there is a little change (kinda bluing ) if I change video mode from Vivid to warm or Movie but still B&W only. I tried disconnecting/reconnecting/all cables and Hardresetting set with no change. Any Ideas on the Cause? is it finnaly Dead? I loved/love this TV any Help would be appreciated, Thanks.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like your color wheel might have thrown all its segments. That is the usual cause. Unplug the projector and kind of flip it around to see if you hear the noise of loose glass sliding around inside. I have a bunch of videos on checking color wheels. I don't have one on your HP but the theory applies to all models. I highly suspect thats what happened.
