Thank you, it’s just what I needed to hear, I have a 60yr old visitor from Thailand today, he squats into this position with ease and remains there for ages, not so for me but now your clear instructions here have given me hope.
@@The_Savage_WombatI’m 6 feet 230lb male in my mid 30s, and after working up to it, I can do an Asian squats for short periods of time. I’d like to increase the time, and I’ve noticed improvements in daily life from focusing on it.
Very interesting video. I am one of the lucky ones, male 73 who doesn't have any of the contra indications you mentioned and by doing the Asian squat multiple times every day my flexibility and strength has improved. Before I do any Asian squats for the day I always do an exercise similar to what you showed holding onto the stair banister. My ankles are now much stronger and their improved flexibility has made a notable difference in my walking. If you can work on the Asian squat without the concern of the contra indications you mentioned I would highly recommend it. Being an avid cyclist helps too as cycling is a great sport for your health. The key for most people is to stay active early in adulthood and never stop.
Wow. You Go girl. I'm doing pretty good today I try to do 30 regular squats every day. at least for a while. I can sure feel it too. I'm 58 and I'm going on 5 years whole foods. I never realized how important movement is.
I am sixty four and started deep squats two months ago. No more lower back pain and can restock lower shelves at the food bank with no issues. Do them everyday now a few times a day. 😊 Plan on doing these from here on in.
I’m sixty, I’ve very long legs , tight ankles, tight lower back, and scoliosis… I’m trying to reach complete asian squat since march, using some easier alternative versions. And it works 💪💪💪 Thanks a lot for this video ❤
I often thought that, as I hiked 800 miles of the PCT at age 70, no one ever mentioned that the most practical requirement for trail fitness would be the Asian squat as required on those early morning potty breaks. It became very comfortable at some point, but it took a while.
Please spend more time showing each position. Your suggestions are very helpful but there is very little time for my aging brain to register the exact position!!!
Hi, thank you for this guidance on the 3 alternatives. I have osteoporosis and arthritis so the 3 alternative options are real possibilities to achieving the squat. Can you advise how long to hold the 1st and third positions in particular and what would be a sensible number of reps in a session. Many thanks again.
Should someone with both knees replaced attempt the Asian squat? I function very well with them and it’s been two years since the last knee replacement.
Would you please repeat what the meditation pose with the small stool looks like? I can't quite get it from this video -- need a longer exposure. Thanks.
Not just the Asian kids, but every kid in the world does deep squat!! Just in the wester culture , the kids grow up and never squat, goes with electric roller, play on video games. I had students in twenties, who were not able squatting their own body weight . So, parents keep up asking your growing up kids to keep up play outside, and squat !!
☝🏽I was hoping someone would comment on this. No need to show an actual Asian baby accomplishing this. In fact, I find it amusing that it’s even referred to as “an Asian squat.” It’s just a full squat with heels on the ground. Any human can do it, with practice. And many people around the world do, not just Asians. But the instructions were great for those of us who can’t do it ( &, er, I am Asian lol).
If I sit on a low stool or even squat, I can't get up. 😕. I hike a lot and am starting to do regular calf muscle exercises, but still don't have the strength to stand up.
If no pain just keep practicing. Use her alts and work up slowly. Also try a toilet stool (not for peeing) and put hands on knees while sitting fwd to get up. Bonus it’s functional. Then low stools and or kneeling she showed on firm bed if easier then floor for now. Work on muscles used to stand up w/mini squats. Search Margaret’s name and them on YT or see her playlist.
Since you're focusing on calf muscles, make sure you work the opposing muscles or you will be unbalanced and it'll cause pain. Sounds like you need to do toe raises to strengthen your tib muscles. And your glutes. ALL THREE. and quads.
I grew up in Indonesia with squats! A year ago I tore the meniscus in my left knee, and it is still painful at times. Should I try to go back to the squats I loved or should I protect my knee and abstain?
Can you pls consider doing a video with progressions for learning the Asian squat for your viewers who don't have any contraindications? I am 60 and have been trying for a long time to master it, but I can't do it without rounding my back (to keep myself from falling over backwards). Thanks!
@barbatamellow3870 check out videos from the Asian guy at Upright Health. His videos are excellent and he caters for all ages with great explanations. I'm 73 and I'm almost there!!
I’m 71 and have op but have been doing Asian squat as long as I can remember. I’m always mindful of keeping my back straight. What do you think. Thanks.
I am 77 and have always been able to sit in the Asian squat but I can't stand up again without pulling myself up or getting over onto my knees (all fours) and pushing up from the ground. What can I do?
How do I know what is causing the pain? I went to a walk in clinic but he prescribed antidepressants for neuropathy pain. And yes, they did seem to work.
How long should I hold my squat? I do not have any knee, hip or ankle issues. I am 75 and walk rigorously several times a week, but squats seem so important.
Is this reasonable for people with short legs? I am 4 11 and I just think because I am very older late 60s that I’ve shrunk her and I don’t have any room down there. Any suggestion I can get down and up with no problem but when I’m down there there’s not I’m almost to the floor.
3 healthier alternatives to the Asian Squat.
Agreed. It's a generational thing. 😊
How do you loosen the muscles around the knees so that you can do the squat?

How tall is he? How much does he weigh? I'm curious if tall people can do it. I haven't seen any.
@@The_Savage_Wombat Wombat he is 5ft 8” tall and quite thin, about 160lbs, I will ask him next time he visits me.

@@Greenwoodland I'm much older and a bit taller and bigger than you. It's very difficult for me but I can do it a little now.
THANKYOU Margaret. I have severe cartilage loss on my knee, and finding the classic Asian squat hurts it. I’ll do your alternate positioning

Why is it bad for someone with osteoporosis? I do this squat frequently and have been diagnosed with osteoporosis . Thank you
Good question. I cover this question and more in my free osteoporosis course. melioguide.com/free-course/
Great video! I’ve been practicing this position in the hot tub at my gym. There’s a bench at just the right height and I feel supported by the water.
