    Description:
MLB playoff baseball is the best. Teams play 162 regular season games. After that, there is zero room for error.
Your championship hopes come down to one strike. One Error. One hit. One play. And unfortunately for some teams, their dreams ended in one of the most gut-wrenching plays imaginable.
I’m DeQwan Young, and today we present the 10 most devastating losses in MLB history.

The 1992 Pirates losing the NLCS to the Braves on the last play of Game 7 should be on here. It wrecked the Bucs, probably forever despite a few Wild Cards a few years ago.

Great point about the Indians having not won since 1997. I was there that game 7 and it truly was like a kid beating a legend with 2 outs to go. While 1986 and 2011 might be more heartbreaking due to being one strike away (and let’s remember the rangers have NEVER won a title compounding that game 6 choke), I appreciate number 1 being 1997. Having said that here are some omissions (that certainly beat Chambliss’ walkoff in terms of heartbreaking ending, after all the royals rallied to tie it 6-6) that come to mind:
1978: Game 163 Bucky Dent homerun and final out after 14.5 game yankee season comeback (you wanna talk devastating?)
1986 ALCS game 5- Henderson’s homerun one strike away against Angels
    1992 NLCS Game 7- Cabrera’s walkoff 2-run single 1 out away
2001- You could choose games 4 and 5 as perhaps two of the most devastating losses in W.S. history, but of course game 7 (which my yankee fandom, the 3 previous titles, the title since, the 3 games in NY, and Gonzo’s steroids aside.. should still be on this list: that was truly heartbreaking, circumstances aside
2002: Giants blow 5-run lead with 8 outs to go, extending their San Fran drought to 48 years
2014 AL WC game- Oakland blows it again and again
2016 W.S. Game 7- obvious, but yes that rajai homerun off Chapman to tie it not coming to fruition (especially in
Cleveland) must have been the most devastating letdown imaginable.

I’d also add the 2016 Cleveland Indians. They led the World Series 3-1, yet the Cubs pulled two wins out of their hats. Even with a botched play by the Cubs that allowed two runs, and Rajai Davis’ game-tying home run off an exhausted Aroldis Chapman, they went down in their own ballpark, which sounded more like Wrigley Field with all the Cubs fans singing “Go Cubs Go”.

2014 A’s loss to Royals in wild card game. #1 in everyone’s power rating in July, Oakland remade its roster for the stretch drive including acquiring the “unbeatable in one game” Jon Lester. They collapsed and just did make the playoffs and twice handed Lester two run leads. He gagged them both and the upstart Royals went on to win the World Series. The traditionally strong A’s have sucked ever since.

    1. ANGELS blow 3-1 lead in 1986 ALCS to Boston Red Sox, when with 1 out left in top of 9th in Game 5 and Angels up by 1, Boston's Dave Henderson HITS TWO-RUN HOME RUN to give Red Sox the lead. Then after Angels managed to tie score in bottom of 9th, Boston wins in extra innings to send series back to Boston for Games 6 and 7.
Angels manager Gene Mauch FAILED to win a pennant again. The manager with most wins in MLB history without winning a single pennant. And closer Donnie Moore actually committed SUICIDE a few years later. So this HAD to be Number 1! How could you miss this?
    2. Cleveland blowing a 3-1 lead to the Cubs in the 2016 World Series. Possibly more painful than 1997 WS loss (by the way, that Game 7 in 1997 happened to be the birthday of Indians manager Mike Hargrove: not a happy birthday for him)
    3. Pirates losing Game 7 of 1992 ALCS on two-out, two-run single in bottom of 9th by Atlanta pinch hitter Francisco Cabrera (who hardly played that season: he only had 3 hits in 12 games!) . How devastating was this for Pittsburgh? Star Barry Bonds left for SF Giants the next season, and they did not ever have a winning season again until 2013!
    4. Los Angeles Dodgers blowing 2-0 lead in 1985 NLCS when Ozzie Smith (!) hits walk-off homer in bottom of 9th in Game 5, then in Game 6, Jack Clark blasts three-run homer with 2 outs in top of 9th with Dodgers. OK, Smith was no slugger, but Jack Clark was. Still, Dodgers were ahead by 1 run and had first base open when Clark came to bat, but they elected to pitch to him. Bad.
    5. Powerful 1988 Oakland Athletics lose 1988 World Series to a weak-hitting Los Angeles Dodgers. It started with the Game 1 loss when their ace reliever Dennis Eckersley gave up winning pinch hit homer to a crippled Kirk Gibson. This was one instance when a far better team lost to a relatively weak team. (In this connection, you can also add the earlier NY Mets' loss to 88 Dodgers in 1988 NLS as a devastating loss: Mets were 1 inning away from taking 3-1 lead when Dodgers' Mike Scioscia tied Game 4 with two-run homer off ace Dwight Gooden: Mets eventually lost Game 4 in extra innings and the entire NLCS in 7. Dodgers postseason run was remarkable for beating 2 powerful teams in postseason, both of whom won at least 100 games)

There is no way you can leave out the Angels. In fact #3 should have been the 2014 season with the best record in baseball getting swept by the Royals in the ALDS. #2 '86ALCS against the Red Sox. Losing the lead and game 7 with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth. #1 game 6 of the '02 World series down 5-0 in the 6th and coming back to win it in the ninth inning, and then game 7 convincingly
