  • Since the videos have slowed down I've decided to make the biggest single massive improvement by just using left over materials we have lying around.
    The upstairs hallway gets painted.

You can use a ladder with the stairs to make scaffolding. Fix boards to steps so they do not shift

For the lose plaster you can inject some adhesive behind the plaster to fix it in place.

I believe the skirting boards on old houses were bigger downstairs because that is the more formal part of the house where you would receive guests.

For the dents in your banister melt some ice cubes in the dents, the wood will swell back up and you can sand it smooth.

Excellent idea abt replacing the skirting boards & the spindles! 28 years ago, I spent months of my spare time stripping 6 layers of paint from 14" skirting boards in a 2.5 storey victorian house. I then repeated the process on the spindles, doors & architraves. Regret it now as I have chronic arthritis & I also didn't wear an adequate face mask. Paint everything white until you can replace those dangerous wooden bits.

I've been renovating a 7000 sqft house for the last 5 years. The first thing I did was renovate ONE ROOM AT A TIME!! THis way the house is still livable and doesn't look worse. Do yourself a favor and try not to make a huge job out of it. Remember, you intend to live there for a long time so you have the time to move along at a slower pace. :)

So glad to see a video pop up today. You’re doing great, even when cash is so tight. You’ve got your health, don’t have to travel anywhere near as much now you’ve moved in. Things will improve, in the meantime do as you can.Be safe and keep healthy. Have a happy holiday month, and remember to make memories, as all the other big stuff aren’t what you remember it’s the small stuff that you do remember always.
All the best to you and your family,Maureen.

Dream big! Keeping these houses’ original features is important.
Do what you can yo match your budget to get it livable and the rest will come later. It’s a lovely property.
I feel your pain. My house whilst not as old and not as “needy” has its quirks. I’m just working with them. And I love that skylight! Is that the right word? I nearly bought a house with one 3 times the size but that place was waaaay too much for a novice like me 😂

Would love to have seen your wife's reaction to the paint- what a difference! You're right- slow and steady progress. One channel I watched broke every task into 15 min segments and committed to spend at least 15 min a day. Even when she felt unmotivated, she did the 15 min and often found once started, she gained momentum and did more.

In my house they drilled holes in the bottom and top plates to feed wires through. You still end up with damaged plaster but maybe not as bad. I’m sure the patches won’t be too bad. You did a nice job avoiding the crown moldings. Hang in there. The paint is looking great.

    • @FromLeedsToWest

My brother set up a little power contraption on the dining table where he wired up the hall & landing switches to so he could test out how he thought it worked. Hopefully, when he finishes plastering all the holes he's made tomorrow, it'll work in real life. I now have tons of mist coating to do. At least most of my walls are stud so little chasing, but it's important to know where the wires are going for hanging paintings etc - not like my house where they shoved them where ever like down the side of the door so changing architrave could be lethal. House is looking good. It's always amazing what a difference a coat of paint makes. Well done on the subscribers.

    • @FromLeedsToWest

That’s not a bad idea. Actually physically testing it out to get your head around it is a great idea. Should have done that myself.
With the wiring any chasing should only be vertical or horizontal from any switch or plug. A good rule of thumb when coming to putting up pictures. Luckily for me I know where everything is now.

hi, because those walls were solid plaster on solid brick, not hollow walls. UK house construction is a lot different to American timber frame. Our plastering is also typically full skim over all the wall instead of taped seams then mud only over the seam.

We have watched through them all, really enjoyed them & noticed the improving quality of the videos. Thumbs up on all videos, made several comments & then went through every available comment & thumbed up every single comment !!! We also recorded the subscriber numbers against the time & date so have a search for our comments to see the numbers increasing. I just wish i had done this earlier as it would have been good to note the channel growth. Plenty of others have been doing similar so it all helps :) 11.3K subscribers as at 7:18pm 30/1/2025 keep on pumping that algorithm. a little money from youtube could help pay for his "wish list" of those oh so desirable 3rd set of hinges in the centres of his doors ;) Best wishes Andy & Lisa xxx

Do you think people make youtube videos purely for your entertainment? Do you work for free? There will be hours & hours of time spent making these videos why shouldn't he be paid for it.
He's trying to make a home for his family any way he knows how & earning some money from youtube Is one way. He's not going to be a millionaire any time soon if that makes you feel better? You could have just stopped typing after the nice things you said instead of accusing him of nefarious behaviour.
