Just put it in front of the HD500 like you normally would. Basically the 4CM is just like using the amp as a power amp and the HD500 for effects and preamps. Then you can add the amp's preamp in the effects loop of the HD500.
This is the video that line6 should have made! Kley, many thanks. You time spent making this video was well spent and will assist many of us HDxxx owners. Love the Tele too!! Regards from NJ Mark
@HerbieRoadhouse - You can use two amps to get stereo sound. It has two outputs. If you only use the Left out put then it will be mono. If you use both it will be stereo.
Yes that is totally possible, and largely the point of the 4 cable method. Essentially in the chain I set up your amp's preamp is located in the HD500's effects loop. So you can put the effects loop on one of the footswitches and toggle it in and out. Or you can setup different patches that use either the HD500 for preamp or the amp - whichever you want for that sound.
Thank you. Give it a shot, can't hurt anything. I don't know what kind of speaker is in the frontman, but it may not be ideal for the HD500. I honestly haven't tried it very much to comment.
Right, the HD500 is actually serving as the preamp and you have to put the Amp's preamp in the circuit to get it in play. Not including an FX loop will be as if you plugged straight into the power section.
Your amp's preamp is only in the circuit if you have the effects loop activated. If you make a patch with no effects loop, or deactivate the effects loop, then you'll bypass the amp's preamp.
I agree - I currently use a Wampler Ecstasy and a Timmy in front of my HD500 running into my amp. It works extremely well. I've also used the built in amps in the HD500 and they respond very well also.
What amp are you using? The way most multi-channel amps work gets most of the gain from the preamp section - which is what you are inserting in the FX loop of the HD500. It should work. Does your amp have a manual detailing how to use its FX loop?
There is no signal loss, and I don't always use it at 100%. Between the master volume and the effects loop send and return levels combined with the amp preamp and master volume there are a lot of places to adjust the volume/gain. It takes some tinkering to get it all dialed in just right, but it is definitely doable. I tuned it all by ear so that the changes between real amp and patches was where I wanted it to be.
@Arbiterisl33t69 - It basically gives you tons of routing options. It allows you to use any mix of the HD500's amps and/or effects with your amp's preamp. You can use the effects both in front of the preamp or in the effects loop regardless of using your amp's preamp or the HD500's amps. You can basically do anything... If you just plug your guitar into the HD500 and that into the front of your amp you are pretty much limited to only compressor, distortion, or modulation and your amp.
Yes, in this demo I am using the tube amp preamp/power amp - but I am using the effects as I would desire. The dirt are in front of the amp and the delay/reverb are in the effects loop. If I wanted to use the HD500's preamps you have the option to.
Yeah you sure can. I usually use a few overdrives and a fuzz in front of my HD500 - which I use for delays, reverbs, modulation, and the looper. If you're looking to set up something similar you definitely can. That would be: Guitar - OD - Fuzz - HD500 4CM into amp. You only have one effects loop on the HD500 so you can't get really crazy and put a few analog delays and reverbs post preamp with the 4CM.
@Arbiterisl33t69 - I'm not too knowledgable on your specific amp, but if it has midi switching then you should be able to use the HD500 to switch channels. I know the HD500 can do that, but I don't know a darn thing about midi other than that. Good luck!
The only time it would be less than perfect is if you want to use a delay pedal in front of the HD500 with a high gain amp preamp. The delay would get washed out. But if you're focusing on overdrives, distortions, and fuzzes you are good to go. Just put them between the guitar and the HD500 guitar input.
Hey, great tutorial. I have Mesa Boogie f-50, and i want to use the 4CM. Around 00:40 you said that i can choose to choose the POD's preamp. How do i then bypass the preamp on my mesa with the 4CM? Thank you!
Hi, great video , really help full. I have a question about it, I have the same options for recording that I have in the HD desktop ? like, I can play one time and record the same guitar in two different amps, Like, Left I have a mesa and right I have a Marchall. thank you !
Excellent video, just a quick question......would i be right in saying that if i hooked my setup the way the showed and recorded it into Logic pro via USB, would i have more of a tube amp sound than what the HD500 provides ? i have a peavey 6505 head, so would i get some 6505 colour in the mix ?
@pratikbhosle123 - You can just put them in front of the HD500 as you normally would. Both of those would be fine going in front. If you wanted them to go into the effects loop, I'm not actually sure how that would go... But for traditional use, just put them in front as normal.
Thank you for this! The key piece here is the FX LOOP "device" must be in your signal chain or it will not work! Worked perfectly on my EVH 5150 III. I had to set the Return to +24. There's a little bit of signal noise but it would be similar if you had "real" pedals there anyways.
I revisited this vid because I can never remember how to hook it all up if my life depended on it, guess I need to label all my cables with tape and markers haha. First time, I tried it on a Mesa & it was weird. This time I tried w a different brand, & had better results. Kudos...
hey bro how versatile is the pod hd500? im about to send my boss gt-10 and im thinking of getting a new multieffect pedal... i also have a telecaster and well your sound really good... what model is it? i have a telecaster j5 thanks
Have you done any direct recording using this method? Sure is a good idea you have there and seems it would make for an easier time than messing w/mics and cabs.
Great sounds again. I was totally distracted by who ever is behind you in that chair. I can't imagine what she was doing but it looked like she was concentrating pretty hard haha.
@ephiphone35 - It is mind-blowing versatile. I haven't even really explored everything it can do - I primarily use it for the amp sims, delays, and reverbs - which it does excellently. Add in the modulation and filter/synth effects and you can cover a lot of ground. The tele is a homebuilt Warmoth creation. I ordered the neck from Warmoth - it is Goncalo Alves. The body came from Mighty Mite. Most of the hardware came from azguitarparts
@Arbiterisl33t69 - yeah it sounds great, especially with routing the effects using the Amp's preamp. I wasn't able to really tweak it properly when using the HD500's preamps with the amp's power section. IMO its best to use that with a FFR setup. But this is my favorite way to setup my HD500 with an amp.
I would like to buy the HD500... I got a Gibson Les Paul studio and a Laney 120RH head with a 2-speakers cabinet by Jet City 333.... I play stuff like Zep, AC/DC and Pink Floyd....would you reccomend me the Pod HD500??
yes, i think you can add a seperate effect pedal! but there are so many distortion pedals in the HD500 that you will find one that sounds familiar to yours!
Was thinking of up grading from my Boss ME-25 to a Firehawk or even a Helix Line 6 but I have all this input's on my JMD-1 Marshall amp and the Boss...gonna try this before I invest!! Like this idea...sounds good and like your playing!!! Thanks for the info...
Hi, did you notice any difference regarding the tone of your amp or the way the amp reacts when using the 4 cable method. I did this with older units but never got it right and it all sounded digital including my amps distortion. Your input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
HI, i get a question. I just have started to work with guitar rig and the midi controller behringer fcb1010, I like so much all the sound posibilities....Using fx loop in the pod hd500, ¿ can I use send and return input/output to get the fx from the computer without use a two ways channel selector pedal? I have: 1. Computer (guitar rig software) 2. GUITAR LINK UCG102 interface 3. MIDI cable to USB 4. Midi controller (fcb 1010) Thanks for your help.
Quick question. Is it possible to close the fx loop all-together and eliminate your amp's preamp and then use the HD as the preamp. I have a great amp, but I'm not crazy about the clean end. I'd like to use a fender patch on the HD500 as my clean.
Hallo Kley, nice video! I have problem with HD 500, mabye help me? When I put FX Loop in the chain my output dies (balance and unbalanced) doesn't produce any sound. So that 4 cable method not working. Can you help me????
Killer Faces! :) Really nice vids dud, im just about to get my hd500 and its seems i have the whole tutorial of 'how to play' this fx unit! Thanks a lot :]
I've been looking into using this method with my Acoustic setup. I have an LR Baggs Venue DI with a series FX loop. would I use the Venue in the same way you'd use your amp and then just send the XLR output of the DI into my mixer? And if so... where would I position the compressor? Before or after the loop? Any help would be appreciated :)
+Михаил Клинко Hi Mike, all my HD500 presets are located here: line6.com/customtone/profile/kleydj13/ The sound at 8:10 combines two delays, something I use on almost all my presets. One a digital delay set to .8th repeat and then a fairly high mix and repeat. The second a tape delay set to 1/4 repeats with more morederate mix and repeats. Turn them both on and play 8th notes in line with the tap tempo.
so in this vid all d break up and sound is coming from the amp itself and ur ust adding the delays wid d 500? does using the pedal with your tube amp affect the volume or tone of the amp at all?
I run my guitar into my amp then run a cable from the out (send) of the amp into the input on my pedal board (boss me-20), then I run the L/R out on the (boss me-20) to the L/R effects return on the amp. This allows me to keep the sound of my amp into the pedal board and the effects are returned after to the amp in stereo L/R. Your way is also good.
(im a bit of a noob here so please bare with me) I amp combo I'm currently running is a Hiwatt Maxwatt G40 (for what it is it sounds pretty damn good.) Just wondering if the 4 cable method is achievable with the pod hd500, or if not.. if ill get a decent enough sound out of it just running it direct into my amplifier? thanks
Nice..i was planning to use in one patch just the amp distortion with a reverb...(with no amp modeling). The fact is that i read on line6 forum that when you use the amp you have to switch the 1/4 output to amp insted of line. That's a problem because if i play in a live situation i would like not to switch manually every time. Any ideas? Thank you
You mean no FX loop on the HD500 right? So i can basicly do everything you say in this video, but not choose a fx loop on the pod, and i will bypass the preamp? :)
So if I wanna use presets or downloaded tones with the 4 cable method, they will sound better if I insert the FX loop after the amp in the preset patch?

I'm working on something similar...but with 6 cables:: Instrument > 500 > (500 send to) Pedalboard Part A > AMP > (AMP send to) Pedalboard Part B > 500 (return) > AMP (return) ...yeah, it might be a bit before I get to that...
Thank you, I chew on my tongue when I concentrate - always have. I tried to stop once but then I couldn't hardly play a lick. It may look a bit odd but I honestly don't care. :)

@nobleblood100 - That's only half of it. You can also use the HD500 preamps so you can essentially turn your tube amp into any other tube amp.
This is great! Thanks for posting and taking time to explain the 4 cable method. Great playing, too. Really good stuff.
Thank you. Give it a shot, can't hurt anything. I don't know what kind of speaker is in the frontman, but it may not be ideal for the HD500. I honestly haven't tried it very much to comment.
Nice playing dude. Thanks for uploading this really helpful for us who are just starting out using this method

With your boogie I'd start with the Combo. I used pwr amp for this demo. Try all three and see which sounds best to your ear.

I actually bought it that way. It was an aesthetic choice. I believe it is called the Fender G.E. Smith bridge. Just think it looks cool :)

I'm not sure about distortion pedals, but my Pod HD500 handles my Fulltone OCD overdrive quite well between the guitar and HD500.
@RESCUE94 - I have and I really like using it. It is probably the most versatile sound I could get while maintaining the tube warmth.
Have you done any direct recording using this method? Sure is a good idea you have there and seems it would make for an easier time than messing w/mics and cabs.
@rperez818 - Thank you, I'm glad it was helpful. It is such a powerful way to use your equipment!

No TRS Cable, just two standard instrument cables. FX loop is in line mode.

beautiful sound, so beautiful, nice guitar and preamp also.

thank you so much man! I have much control on my amp now. I try setting from romanian site but didn't work. Man you're awesome. Rock on \m/

great work and playing
When using this method, suggest the preamp models and disable the cabinets option. Eliminates coloring of your amp and readjusting preamp eq
Might not work as well, but you can definitely try it.
@Surykatka1994 - Thanks, the faces are an integral part of the tone ;)
Good luck!
Hi, did you notice any difference regarding the tone of your amp or the way the amp reacts when using the 4 cable method. I did this with older units but never got it right and it all sounded digital including my amps distortion. Your input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

if you wanted to use your own overdrive pedal, where would you put them in this four cable method chain
Hi Kley, was struck by the sound of the guitar which started on 8:10.
Could you, please share this present?
Thank you, Mike
+Михаил Клинко Hi Mike, all my HD500 presets are located here:

Yeah it would be easy. Just send the L and R outputs to each amp. Then in the chain put what you want to be stereo on top or bottom before the mixer.

great tones!
Nice U2 sound...thank you very much...
hello!!
are using a TRS cable???
and the fx loop switch you use on line or stomp???
thanks!!!!
I run my guitar into my amp then run a cable from the out (send) of the amp into the input on my pedal board (boss me-20), then I run the L/R out on the (boss me-20) to the L/R effects return on the amp. is it possible to use your amplifier's distortion instead of the POD's with this method? I'm sorry I'm really new to this.
you can use everything you have with this setup
thanks a lot, thats excatly what i was looking for.
(im a bit of a noob here so please bare with me) I amp combo I'm currently running is a Hiwatt Maxwatt G40 (for what it is it sounds pretty damn good.) hello, can you set up a dual tone where you use your amp pre amp in the first tone and hd models in the other tone ...
when i will play with two amps from the Pod- need i then also live two amps for left and right sound???
You mean no FX loop on the HD500 right? So i can basicly do everything you say in this video, but not choose a fx loop on the pod, and i will bypass the preamp? :)
So if I wanna use presets or downloaded tones with the 4 cable method, they will sound better if I insert the FX loop after the amp in the preset patch?
hey men which output type you use? studio/direct or combo front
Hello! You use the front Amp mode or direct / studio mode?
Thanks for the video, very informative.
Very nice playing and thanks for the vid. Can you please explain to me why your mouth is doing that? Are you chewing gum?
Hello.. any idea why i dont get any of the effects after the fxloop working?
I figured you were chewing your tongue. All guitar players have certain habits I understand. I one more question. Could you get SRV tone by getting a SRV strat and adjusting the settings accordingly?
holy blair witch project... the information in the video is great..
Thank you.
Do you change your output setting
so when we use the 4 cable method, the hd500 function is just like a stompbox?
Why did you cut off the bridge surrounding the pickup?
Thanks!
Nice!
Thanks for a good video Ricardo! God bless you! My best wishes for you from Russia!
Does it matter if you have a solid state amp?
You can but then it will only work with the amp's preamp.
you are awesome this is super helpful
O really? I would have thought the drive pedals would go before the cable going into the front of the amp the input?
Great video dude, just a question WTF happened to the chick in the back at 5:45?? hahaha
