Thanks a lot. Got some Qs: 1. What do I need to change to run it on 110v AC (actually it's around 127v) 2. How do you make it variable? for say 3v, 5v, 9v, and 12v ? I recommend people add some protection like a fuse before the circuit on one of the wires(lines).
Use 105 j in parallel to 1 Mega ohm 1/4 W, use a bridge rectifier IC or a bridge rectifier using 4 IN 4007 diodes, use filter capacitor 1000 microfarad 50 V, use a regulator IC as per your need(7812,7809,7805 for 12 V/09 V/05 V dc respectively....as per your need).....donot forget to attach a heat sink to the IC.....avoid using a zener...in case you use donot use zener below 1 W......use a very low value 2 W fusible resistance for protecting the circuit against ac spikes....keep the entire thing within a plastic/pvc/MDF box with ventillations.....connect the phase(live) with the open end of the pf capacitor otherwise current shock at the dc output is 100% guaranteed.....to avoid mistake,use a 3 pin plug such that live and neutral remains connected at fixed places.
I want to power a mini electric skimmer (fish filter) that works with 240v and has 5 watts output.my thinking is this electric machine to be portable ,so i want to power it with a power bank that gives 5v .Is this stupid think,or possible to do? If so what should i buy to do that?

Lo único que si se puede admitir, es que no esta sujeto a un pcb. Pero en mi parecer, el diseño esta bien. Lo único que le falta tras la carga, es un indicador led.

Was that 470 kilo Ohms resistor which is connected parallel to capacitor???? The colour code was Green blue Yellow which is 560 Kilo ohms. For 470 kilo-ohms it should be Yellow Violet Yellow !!!!
It's there solely to stop the cap from staying charged and shocking you back through the exposed plug blades once unplugged. However, this circuit has so many different ways of killing you, I can't see the point of having that one tiny nod to safety.

Basically you are using a resistor to step down the voltage and then use a bridge rectifier to convert it to DC. Could you let me know what would the cap 22J do with the resistor in parallel? The efficiency and capability of such a stepdown circuit is low and with load the resistor is bound to become very hot. Not a practical design for commercial use. Is there a better way without using a transformer to stepdown 220v to 5.5v?

If the capacitor shorts, then it would fry all the components in the circuit and possible blow your usb device. This is not a safe circuit for charging or for personal use. Be careful.
Ring Neck is there any way to increase output current to 1 to 1.5 amp? in this circuit? I want to make 5 V mobile charger which requires that much output current. For above 500 mili amp if transformer is the only solution than why all mobile chargers are so lite? So there has to be some way to get higher output current without using transformer.

This generally happens if you get within 2m of this circuit .. You become charged and start vibrating.
