I think that there should be a soap opera about how yngwie left dimarzio for seymour duncan... The beginning of the video makes it sound as though he made some kind of contract with Lucifer at the Namm show
Yngwie threw a Dimarzio HS 3 at Thomas Jefferson [the interviewer] and said ''make me one of those and label it Seymour Duncan''...and give me 25% of the sales...love malmsteen interviews!
Why is Everyone Making such a Big Deal with Yngwie Switching pickups ! He has to make a Living and He is a Music Impire. The Music Indusry is a Business. I have never know a Guitarist that Gets Hated on for Everything that he Does. Leave Yngwie Alone He is a LEGEND and doesn't have to Prove anything to anyone.
Probably because he spent 25 years saying dimarzio were the best. He even had a signature pickup with them. He has said many times he will only endorse products that he believes in 100%. Now he is saying that Dimarzio are shit. That is why people find his move a bit strange. Also a bit odd that the Black Star playing in the background to this video was recorded with his Dimarzio pickups. If they're that bad, why would Yngwie allow that?
@@douglasnisbet1189 exactly! One thing is to say, I like this one more now because XYZ and another to basically trash the pickup that was integral to your sound for over 2 decades.
For those that are complaining that his tone was better on the 1st 4 albums, let me tell you this: Listening to the albums, I agree whole-heartedly. However, the latest few albums don't sound bad because of his guitar pickups or tone, they sound bad because too much compression was used for the over-all sound of the whole band in the studio recording. I attended his concert this year in Ventura, Ca and can tell you that live, with the YJM Fury pickups...the tone was sublime. Absolutely clean and beautiful just like or even better than the DiMarzio's. I know, because I have all of his albums and I have a version of the YJM Strat with the DiMarzio's.
but have you tried the Duncans ? i just tried the Dimarzios and they are good , but i'm very curious about the new pickups ... i think too that he's sound in the new albums is shit , but as you said , it could be due to poor production ...
The Dimarizio's ALWAYS sound compressed in a weird way, almost plastic, fake or contrived. Seymour built me two custom sets one for my Gary Smalley strat and one set of one off JB and Jazz for my 10 pound Les Paul and I have not used any other pickups for over twenty-five years. Seymours pickups and work ethic is what making music and understanding artists needs are about!
YJM isn't egotistical or arrogant, he's just confident in what he knows and what he can do. Many people said the same about Bruce Lee being cocky and arrogant. No he just was confident same with Yngwie. Both artist who are masters of their craft.
I had the Dimarzio YJM pickups in my strat. You need an overdrive pedal for them to rock & also a noise gate. The fact that his new pickups are hum canceling sounds like an improvement. I have Duncan's & DiMarzios in my Guitars. They are both good it is just a matter of picking what is right for you as a player. Yngwie Rocks!
MY favorite part is at 1:22, i totally get what he is saying there! A pickup for me has to not only have a great tone but the way it "responds" to my playing is even more important! I found that only with dimarzio's or boutque handwounds like MHD pickups. It is a feel thing that way the pickup tracks fast playing. dimarzio has that down IMHO! the Air Zone/Air Norton set is my favorite. does everything i tell it to...
That's been the main thing I've loved about DiMarzio since I've been using them, which began way back around '86. I noticed right away that they tracked way better, the response, the cut-thru. With the exception of very few Duncans, I find they generally do not have the responsive performance of DiMarzios.
@Liturgyofwar I've heard the pickups in person. My best friend (who is a Malmsteen FREAK) installed them in his strat, replacing the Dimarzio YJM pickups. He has since put the Dimarzio's back in. Although I think these are the best sounding single coils SD makes, to my ears, they lack the punch of the DiMarzio YJM's. Personally, I've always prefered the sound of DiMarzio pickups compared to SD's. Of course as you know, tone is subjective. What's one man's trash, is another man's treasure.
@zakk1983tdm dude yngwie is always evolving and he becomes greater the older he gets !! Don't doubt about him , he is the greatest guitarist ever !! when he was with alcatraz he was a 21 year old kid , he is 47 now , do really expect he would sound exactly the same ??? ofcourse not !! that would be unnatural, but what is great about yngwie is that he does whatever the fuck he wants !!
i was actually quite surprised to see he wasn't with dimarzio anymore. i love the Hs-3 and YJM pick ups and they produce such a nice tone and sound. it was hard to believe that he chose to move to seymour duncan because of probably money. it just goes to show what money can do. but funny thing is that he still plays exclusively hs-3 and yjm pick ups by dimarzio right now from what i hear.
I play funk classic rock an R&B bearly kow who Yngvie is I played these today and they were the best sounding pup I have heard, the were soooo clean , great dynamics took gain really well , no hum wow there are really good pups
Agree! that tone is dimarzio and so much better than the newer duncan fury's as matter of fact YJM was using the dimarzio FS-1 fat strat pu's back then with steeler and alcatrazz, he went to the HS3 later.
These pickups sound Really good, but there's many people that is very "familiarized" with the sound of Yngwie in his very first albums. They use to call it "The Dimarzio Era". It was a kind of perfect combination between composition, technique and the tone of those Dmz's... that made that happen.
Go with small dog companies like Lindy Fralin. They're not mass produced and you can specify a slight over, or underwind to get the tone you're looking for. I went with the blues Specials and they sound fantastic. I was looking for a slightly flatter tone without the piercing highs, but they still have all these beautiful harmonics popping out no matter where your guitars volume knob is.
Well all his iconic albums and songs that his fans know and loved were recorded with dimarzios....nice quiet pickups that suck up even loads of distortion like sponge without mudding the sound. The Hs are very musical pickups, ask Eric Johnson...you can cut through the mix without blur and muddiness....i dont know how great those new SDs are but personally wherever i find an Hs3 and even an Hs4 or Hs2....second hand ill snatch them in a hurry....
@Xcorgi I agree with you for the most part. Dimarzio makes the best humbucker pickups in the market... when it comes to single coil pups i think duncan has the upper hand...
Interesting that Yngwie is straying from his long-term relationship with Dimarzio. I like that he's going with Seymour Duncan. They've always been my personal favorite. Every new guitar I've bought immediately gets loaded with 'em...
@Xcorgi I prefer duncan, but that could be due because i'm use to them, but i'm sure demarzio makes good pickups, pretty much any replacement pickup company thats been in business for 20 years or like dimarzio more, make good pickups.
I feel that another four golden Ferrari neck pendants would be in order...as it stands it is rather understated after all Page , Clapton, Beck and Moore all wear ten Porsche, Rolls, Lamborghini, Maserati and Lotus ones right?
anyone know wht happen??because the yjm pickup became hs4..feel sad too..bcause i am on in a million people who use yjm,hs3 picup..anyone please tell..it sound great too
@immerrocknroll No, he just wasnt happy with his pickups and asked Dimarzio for many years to produce better pickups. They never bothered, so he simply switched.
@NickMass35 Actually, he doesnt say it here, but he said he asked Dimarzio to get better pickups for MANY years and they never wanted to bother. So eventually he went with Duncans ;)
I guess haters are just gonna hate... funny how they usually don't know what the hell they're talking about. Was Dime "shitting" on Dean when he switched to Washburn? Or maybe Clapton was "shitting" on Gibson when he switched to Fender. Obviously you need to re-examine your definition of loyalty.
@brilliantsavage he's talking about his gear, which makes more sense with the 'sword and armor' analogy. if he was to talk about his art, the knight would have to talk about his fighting ability.
Ok thanks thats just great , I'm happy for him ( Yngwie ) and SeYmour and anyone else involved but is there a Part 2 to this because after nearly 10 minutes of listening intently and waiting I still havent a clue what the f%$k they sound like
@thechosenonedead I wasn't justifying his change of supplier, I was justifying his change of pickup; you are absolutely right about him doing it for the money, i suspect.
"...but if we DID plug it in, you could play one note, go off and have a bit of lunch or something and come back, and that one note would still be going on..."
@davejohnsonmusic Also, they will work better with a real amp like my Louis Electric KR-12 where you can actually hear the wood of the guitar. If you like metal though, than just stick with the Duncan's or Dimarzio's
I put some Furys in my squier and the damn thing catches fire when I pick it up.
Awesome! I am happy it worked out well!
I think that there should be a soap opera about how yngwie left dimarzio for seymour duncan... The beginning of the video makes it sound as though he made some kind of contract with Lucifer at the Namm show

MAX CASH Hi Max...I haven't personally tried the Duncans but I've heard them in use, live by the master himself at 3 concerts. They sound tremendous!
then Yngwie's new producer should really get fired ...
did you noticed if he was using he's new Fender distortion pedal ?
MAX CASH I couldn't tell. I imagine for the latest concert, he was as that was just this past July 3rd.
I've always liked his playing, his sound(tone) was always very clean.
which is ok too.especially for playing classical music, which he loves very much.
Seymour the best pickups of planet.
In Brazil you'll meet Seymour Duncan in the Andréllis Custom Shop.
absolutely. his tone on alcatrazz and the first 2-3 solo albums was unreal. he has not been able to better it in terms of tone, nor playing.
The "Dimarzio Era"
seventh sign and war to end were equally amazing in tone and feel
8:29 dudes talking about the pickup while Yngwie is still staring at it,and he says "Yeah" even though he doesnt know what the statement was xD
The HS-3 tone is holy, period.
The Dimarizio's ALWAYS sound compressed in a weird way, almost plastic, fake or contrived. he's talking about Seymour Duncans...but isn't the music in the background played in the DiMarzio loaded Strats?
great to see that level of pro craftmanship

What I was waiting for, thanks

I recently rewired my 2012 YJM strat to complete cloth covered vintage wiring. Including changing the pickup wiring.
With every interview my respect for Yngwie just grows and grows. I don't think he's got an ego problem at all.
It's a real credit to SD engineers to be able to translate "feel" and "emotional" considerations into pickup structure and wiring.
@ThePrincevassago Some of the Japanese only versions, such as the Edwards Alexi model come/came with a SD Blackout.
@zakk1983tdm dude yngwie is always evolving and he becomes greater the older he gets !! yngvie is just enhancing his sound and making a little coin its all good! Seymour will produce a killer yngvie pickup!
Agree! that tone is dimarzio and so much better than the newer duncan fury's
as matter of fact YJM was using the dimarzio FS-1 fat strat pu's back then with steeler and alcatrazz, he went to the HS3 later.
great guitarist and artist(that's why he played with Al Di Meola - Sons of Anu Black Utopia ) both my favourite))
I think Seymour Duncan pays him more easily.
This is the reason. Nothing else!
For me, he had the best tone to the Trial by fire period.
These pickups sound Really good, but there's many people that is very "familiarized" with the sound of Yngwie in his very first albums. They use to call it "The Dimarzio Era". It was a kind of perfect combination between composition, technique and the tone of those Dmz's... that made that happen.
Very cool video. Yngwie rocks!!!
BEST PICK UPS EVER MADE PERIOD NO DEBATE...........

Hey Mr. Duncan
I have a Hm Strat with a Full Shred in the Bridge, would 2 YJM pickups work well in the 2 single coils in the neck and middle postion?
8:36 Did you hear all that gold? The man has got some class
Yngwie Malmsteen: interviewed by Thomas Jefferson.
Yngwie is not just a amazing guitar player he know a Lot of pickups all the electronics.
@Xcorgi I agree with you for the most part. Dimarzio makes the best humbucker pickups in the market... when it comes to single coil pups i think duncan has the upper hand...
Where is the background music from?
Interesting that Yngwie is straying from his long-term relationship with Dimarzio. I like that he's going with Seymour Duncan. They've always been my personal favorite. Every new guitar I've bought immediately gets loaded with 'em...
whats the song in the backround at 2:15?
Did they make 3 pickups for bridge, middle and neck?????
Anyone know which version of Black Star is being played throughout the video?
@Xcorgi I prefer duncan, but that could be due because i'm use to them, but i'm sure demarzio makes good pickups, pretty much any replacement pickup company thats been in business for 20 years or like dimarzio more, make good pickups.
I feel that another four golden Ferrari neck pendants would be in order...as it stands it is rather understated after all Page , Clapton, Beck and Moore all wear ten Porsche, Rolls, Lamborghini, Maserati and Lotus ones right?
Yngwie's tone was always the best of all the neoclassical guys - Him and Uli Roth . I bet this pu rocks - I got 2 try some .
anyone know wht happen??because the yjm pickup became hs4..feel sad too..bcause i am on in a million people who use yjm,hs3 picup..anyone please tell..it sound great too
I wish they could make a Yngwie humbucker. It would be so awesome. I think i might have to buy this set anyways.
Yngwie's pickups are humbuckers. So they already make them. He hasn't used single coils in almost 40 years.
i dont understand why he is no longer with diMarzio? can anyone explain? why couldn't they enhance their pickups, he was with them for years!
@immerrocknroll
No, he just wasnt happy with his pickups and asked Dimarzio for many years to produce better pickups. They never bothered, so he simply switched.
Sono curioso di ascoltare il suono di questi nuovi pick-up, spero che siano veramente migliori dei Di Marzio soprattutto per quanto riguarda i legati!
@NickMass35
Actually, he doesnt say it here, but he said he asked Dimarzio to get better pickups for MANY years and they never wanted to bother. So eventually he went with Duncans ;)
Yngwie looks so amused by the pickup at 8:12, look at his face while he's staring at the pickup
what happenned to his DiMarzio YJM?
He may look weird to some, he may have an ego, but this guy can play and is one of the best of all time, period.
I don’t think he has an ego overall. It’s more like he enjoys being a rock star. It’s sort of like a cosplay character vibe that he likes.
in all of his interviews, he always has a pick on the hand
I guess haters are just gonna hate... funny how they usually don't know what the hell they're talking about. Was Dime "shitting" on Dean when he switched to Washburn? Or maybe Clapton was "shitting" on Gibson when he switched to Fender. Obviously you need to re-examine your definition of loyalty.
When did Yng start using SD's?
interesting......
A rare case of someone not just being a guitarist, but a musician.
yeah and erics fav was a dimarzio HS-2 wired for one coil on. Eric definitely knows tone so dimarzio cant be that bad
"play with legato, pick, play with your teeth. i do all of that" hahaha
I'm lucky. My favorite has already been designed (Duncan JB). ☺
"the fury will soon be unleashed somewhere near you!" AHAHAHAHAH
i like my seymore duncan little 59 for sat tone and dimarzio pro track and fast track 1 for clean...................
What happened to his Dimarzio deal?
@brilliantsavage
he's talking about his gear, which makes more sense with the 'sword and armor' analogy. if he was to talk about his art, the knight would have to talk about his fighting ability.
What happened with DiMarzio? Did his contract run out with them or did Seymour Duncan offer him a better deal?
you recorded this with a potato?
seymour pickups = the beast pickups
the best pickups you can fit into your fender guitar.
Yngwie is awesome
guy: we went through and we were really dissapointed just instead of here
yngwie: yeah..
LOL
@nemogre I have no idea....I just want one with a higher output! :D
@TheAxe4Ever
Did you hear how the actual pick up sound, or are you staing this merely cuz you're assuming?
the comments bellow are more entertaining then the interview itself. ;)
Ok thanks thats just great , I'm happy for him ( Yngwie ) and SeYmour and anyone else involved but is there a Part 2 to this because after nearly 10 minutes of listening intently and waiting I still havent a clue what the f%$k they sound like
A advertisement for Seymour Duncan pickups while the music in background has all been made using DiMazio hs3 .😂
@AtanasovPeter I agree he was a better player back then, but actual tone does depend on amps, pickups etc..
Yngwie malmsteen welcome to the seymour duncan family
@thechosenonedead I wasn't justifying his change of supplier, I was justifying his change of pickup; you are absolutely right about him doing it for the money, i suspect.
"...but if we DID plug it in, you could play one note, go off and have a bit of lunch or something and come back, and that one note would still be going on..."
funny how they play blackstar in the background on Di Marzios?
hell yeah!!
Was Yng rolling one?
is that an esp alexi at the background
So are these pups one trick shred ponies or are they good for cleans, too?
Many country guys love 'em because they have a warm, bell-like sound when used clean.
+Seymour Duncan Cool, thanks for the insight!
imdartson good all around.
GRANDE YNGWIE!!!
When you believe that your pickups are made from the Gods of heavy metal, but instead they are made from Aunt Betty and her gals.....
shut up Allah ✊🏿
I never settle ????? What did you do at dimarzio for 20 years with a pickup that did not cut it for you ???
sound isnt from your fret finger to the pickup.
it still goes to the bridge...
Ahhhh finally know how to pronounce Yngwe now!
@davejohnsonmusic Also, they will work better with a real amp like my Louis Electric KR-12 where you can actually hear the wood of the guitar. If you like metal though, than just stick with the Duncan's or Dimarzio's
今後イングヴェイさんのようなギター🎸プレイ生まれるかなあ。あの時代は良かった。でなく、後も、どこかの国で生まれてほしいなあ。
Wow
@willemkerpel1 Yngwies by far...
@Jumajuice8 it happened, his name was jason becker that kid had way to much power much like icarus
@TMUSICIAN
Please explain further.
I like how the pickups are made in a factory by people who look like my aunts in Wisconsin.
