Like or hate Justin Bieber, he absolutely did not deserve what he got during the 2010s. I still remember the days online when it was extremely normalized for people to share gore edits of him or casually joke about throwing parties if he ever committed self delete all because he was a kinda annoying snot nosed kid who happened to get popular, and people had the audacity to be shocked and appalled when he had his public outbursts. His music wasn’t fantastic and his stans were most people my age’s first exposure to rabid fans, but this corny ass sound is almost camp in hindsight. I’ll never call myself a Belieber, but this guy was a literal child when he went through all that and I hope his millions are paying for some good therapy because damn.
I mean he ain’t no great musician artistically wise but he’s undeniably incredible talented. He was literally HIM in 2014-2016
Nah, there's a video of him up on youtube spamming the n word with hard r, and he never received backlash for it. Not saying he deserved the treatment he got in the 2010s but he wasn't innocent either

You could argue basically every 2010s pop is proto-hyperpop because that's one of the biggest inspirations for it. Hyperpop was ironic and overblown 2010s pop for a while

Like usher used to literally be a poster boy pop star, his name was almost shorthand for success he felt so important but now it feels like he just doesn't matter and I wouldn't be surprised if he was a pop star the young people never hear about
Usher will still remain as one of the pop artists from the 2010s that I consider, let's say, quite a bit above average.
I'm curious as to why he hasn't kept going though. Soundalikes like Chris Brown and Jason Derulo kept having hits for what has seemed like a fair bit longer.

I never really looked back and realized just how many songs off this album I was OBSESSED WITH as a 7 year old child. So many songs man.
I know most of these songs secondhand because I didn't have an mp3 player for a good bit and my friends would always play these songs over their shared headphones.
I was a HUGE BELIEBER around the time that this came out and I listened to this again as a 29 year old. It aged terribly but it still holds a special place in my heart because it’s so sugary sweet and PEAK early 10s.
The Baby/Slipknot mashup is pretty much the only way I’ve made Baby out to be listenable to me.

You can hear some elements in Kesha but tell me that “California Gurls” or “Love The Way You Lie” (two of the biggest songs of the year) are Proto hyper pop and you’d just be lying. There’s a reason why the Dylan Brady remix of California Gurls had to change so much in order to fit in with hyperpop
I mean, BrokenCYDE (increasingly a guilty pleasure) has always been the better comparison for the Gecs sound than any of the pop songs that came out of the 2010s.
Maybe Lady Gaga Artpop (a lot of people said that) but ironically that album flopped when it came out.
Lowkey I think one of the reasons for this is vocal fans wanting to keep Hyperpop relevant to more general music fans, since it’s been losing steam recently.

In 7th grade there was a Justin Bieber concert that went on till like 2am or sometime late for a weekday. Next school day the people that came like 1-2 hours late to school were pretty much lamented knowing they went to that Justin Bieber concert. Knowing that they most likely played songs from this album and My World 1 just reassures my anti-JB takes.
