What is "making it" exactly? Fame? Awareness? Actual career success? These kids seem just as obsessed over the vapid empty things as hip hop artists of the past. The difference is now they can blow up off of social media without a major. Making legitimate tracks on an iphone. Theres definitely some real artists coming up too but just like concious rappers of the past if they aren't generating controversy or fulfilling the pop formula they get buried in the noise.

In my opinion some of the modern stuff is borderline "avant-garde" type territory. Everything new is a reaction to something preceding it. I don't think someone like 645AR would exist without carti, wayne, and thug. A vibe is a vibe. If they're doing it right kids these days are rockin autotune like jimi hendrix did distortion. Interesting inflections and nuances.

Kind of random how this was recommended to me but the shift started when rappers started focusing on one liners here and there with a good hook on a sick beat ... That quickly changed to a good hook on a great beat... Which transitioned to a good beat. The reduction of investments from major labels caused this shift of doing experimental music with major successes or flops; to going with a for sure sale and okay reviews. Good video 👍🏽

Exactly, Pop rap started with Diddy producing these RnB hip hop joints, the Jay Z with the braggadocious raps that setup an environment for the bling bling era with a lot of Vanity from the likes of Lil Wayne and Kanye West. Of course, we get the advantage of cherry picking the best songs. When you’re listening to the music of Now, whenever Now may be, you’re forced to sift through everything coming out, and it’s easy to get fatigued consuming that much content

@@oxproductions2563 but ppl were saying that about the music coming out in 2016, and in 2011, and in 2007, and on and on. I'm sure if you go back far enough you'd find people claiming this whole "music" thing is a fad. "In a few years time these rhythmic thumps, bump, and grunts will be little more than a source of embarrassment for the now-grown youth," this straw-proto-man would confidently proclaim, taking the award for "wrongest person in history" with them to the afterlife, cuz no way anybody taking that away from them.
The point is, every generation reaches a stage where they're old enough that they no longer know what's "cool" anymore, yet still young enough to live in denial about hitting this inevitable milestone, and so opine on whatever the kids are into these days, repeating nearly word for word what had once been said about their "golden age" of music when those artists were the emerging sound of the day. And in a decade or so, the teens and twenty-somethings of today will be saying the same thing about whatever today's 8 year olds listen to when they grow up

As a big fan of hyperpop and industrial hip-hop I think that you're spot on thinking that the people creating the sounds are dope but the copycats kinda ruin it. We only need one Carti, Yachty, Future, etc. The same thing happened to Nirvana in the 90s. An artist's unique sound does NOT need to become a whole subgenre. That totally takes away from what made the original hit so hard.

    • @devinkk
      @devinkk หลายเดือนก่อน

exactly. people are afraid to be themselves...or never wanted to in the first place. I mean nirvana didn't create the genre, they built on Bam Bam, The Pixies and many others but they were able to make it pop enough and then it opened the floodgates. but it's different then though too because you can't just wake up one day and learn to play guitar and form a band and have a record out by the end of the day with a rock band and a four-track lol

I used to be a "rap purist" until I realize that's just born out of gate keeping and hating. These new guys are extremely talented at creating a certain sound along with visuals that separate them from the rest.

Message doesn’t matter because our society doesn’t value much of anything apart from immediate gratification and elevated pleasure. Music is a reflection of the culture at large. Intentionality and depth of meaning are no longer honored, thus the extremes of the opposite are. The message is a part of the emotional connection a listener experiences and most listeners use rap music as an escape from their actual reality in exchange for exaggerated hedonism. It is blissfully ignorant to say there are not degrees of maturity within art. And the best art that has stood across time was deeply meaningful… because it had to be to have such an impact. At the end of the day, it depends on your perspective and the scale at which you are comparing to.
(BTW; This only applies to music consumers not casual listeners.)

The attention span of the consumer shouldn’t drive how artists make art. Art should come from authenticity and inspiration. Then let the people react and respond to it, for better or worse.

The problem with the newer acts and the voice effects, is the all of the bad ones. The ppl who still sound bad, lack breath control, etc.
At least when older artist did those things they still added a bit of their own to make it great (tpain could sing regardless, rapper's "funny" slang/voice was mostly due to cultural differences ie snoop and them sounded like cali guys vs run dmc for example). These new artist have nothing that seperates them/makes them unique besides class fr because sadly internet culture has ripped off and watered down everything. So even once you get past/over the voice effects, theyre still just talking about the same stuff as the next person compared to older music and the stories they told.

Ian def sounds like if the industry got tired of Yeat cause he ain’t continue doing the sound he was on 3 years ago so the industry wanted to capitalize on that by blowing Ian up and throwing him on beats that not from his region but more trendy type retro ATL beats even down to the DJ hosts on his album/tape. Ian’s voice sound in his music is too similar to what Yeat was doing before but you can hear it when Ian talks normally vs his music voice that it’s forced

What people don’t understand is that the vocals we hear in modern rap r not 100% computer manipulated. It takes a lot of work and talent to manipulate vocals WHILE recording. Most of the highlights and better sounding bars that just hits is because the artist knew what he was doing and how to make the end song sound how they imagined in their head. Its all about knowing how to use the tools you are given, not the tools using you.

Everyone hating on a rapper in the comments needs to go ahead and mention some who you think is making good music too. That way we can know whether or not to completely disregard your opinion. Like if you say Ian sucks and is making bad music but then say Ken Carson or destroy lonely is killing it I know not to take you seriously. Don’t just be hating with no solutions

Or if you say something like (just an example) vonoff1700 is trash but nettspend is good I would assume you don’t actually prefer rap music over a guy singing melodies with a lot of autotune. Some of this stuff is barely rap music if at all

I’m not tryna hate but Lazer Dim, Nettspend, Osamason, and Xaviersobased are some major artists I just can’t get with. Now that’s just me personally but everytime I listen it’s like I’m trying to beg them to say something good but it’s just not for me. Ian is kinda the same but IMO his flow is kinda slidin even though his lyrics are basic as fuck

the real talent, the real want to put in effort to put something thought provoking out, has died. It's unfortunate, i just make music for myself now and i feel a lot more fulfilled. What people fail to realize is hiphop and rap in itself was a form of music that was created by black people as a sociopolitical movement. So the serious topics, the skill to flip words around and use metaphors and similes was the goal and it was the peak of talent in the culture, it also pissed the government off, which i love, because people that weren't of our environment got educated on what was really going on. They DO need to have a message in their raps, but hey, i enjoy new age rap, if young black guys can still provide for their family, cool bro. I do wish mfs put in more effort and cared about what they were putting out into the world more. I wanna add in, these niggas songs are so easy to preform, there's no excuse for people to get on stage and just listen to their music when people paid to hear you live.

Hiphop Generationally changes! The 70s was about MC'ing and vinyl chops, which sounds nothing like the 80s which was more about production and catchiness. 90's Rap got more interpersonal and aimed for real life matters but it got shunned cause story's were different. For example people hated Andre 3000 cause he made "Different sounding music" now he's is hip hop. I just think when the unexpected happens that it is more provoking and interesting. I don't think its cause they're not making sense, it's that communication style changes. An example would be trends. This new Generation is ACTIVE IRL meaning twitch streamers are the new rappers. Rap music is built for a generation to feel apart of and if you don't understand then you're not in the "circle of awareness". This means trends reflects lifestyles! In other words you're old and your not the focal point anymore! Growing up my rappers were Lil Wayne, Gucci mane, Early odd future with the wild music videos, ROCKY integrating Soundcloud producers who had a new electronic take on hip hop and Kanye in his PRIME. Basically we were all online and slowly integrating themes into our social lives and these artist facilitated towards our movements. I remember being young and seeing how Soulja boy made the superman go viral or seeing my older cousins freak out if the Jabbawockees were in a music video and the films step up and stomp the yard were major. Socially music felt important, like you either with it or you had no idea about it but it's not as important as it is today. Now hip hop is reality tv with so many characters. Everyone wants to be the main character instead of playing a role in sound but you need Characters to explain a story! Now we're just watching everyone introduce and explain character arcs and lores. I think thats so cool it makes the music a lot more fun to be apart of although thats also whats cheapening it! It just made hip hop Jarring cause how many times do we have to listen to someone re-invent the wheel but people like Yatchy make it interesting cause he's important but he's doing his own thing completely, In the world of newer artist, for example Yeat created a language that adults don't understand but trust me when I say his target audience fully gets it, are well aware of where he is coming from and feel apart of his arch! It's all digital tribes and who's at the centre of it! It's dope to see this Generation do their thing!

On the production side we need to appreciate the engineers and yea the producer gets his praise but engineers to because without hood mixing and master most of these songs would be shit and another thing to add on to what u said about voices in hip hop/rap.2016 was also a shift of linguistic meaning rappers won’t prounce every word right like back in the day. And this shows in young thug music heavy and a lot of big artist and even upcoming artist allways shoutouts thug even yeat said his style was inspired by thug and if u listen u can tell in they way they pronounce words and flow.we are in a age that people can feel the emotion.

Its funny how the majority people who try to strip away skill from hip-hop sounds/subgenres they don’t like literally cant make any decent music at all fake voice real voice or trying to carbon copy ppl ..
Its easy to intellectualize it when ur talkig on paper.. any one who thinks it takes no skill.. jump in the booth make a banger and then come let us know its ez
