Great to hear I could help Aaron! It's such a shame the exposure compensation dial isn't a customisable one...would be so much better if they'd have included that. Thanks for watching.😁👍
No worries, I was surprised at how many things were actually different in the A7C, so decided to document what I found...the more I use this camera the more it is growing on me...especially the autofocus tracking...it's ridiculously good! Thanks for watching 😁👍
Great video. I still can’t decide between the 7c and the 7iii , I’m mostly looking for a camera for pictures, not so much videos, which one would you recommend? Thank you in advance 🙏
Thanks Luis, I'd say if you use the EVF a lot, then the A7iii would be better, if you photograph a lot of moving objects that you need to track, then the A7C. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Great video I'm looking forward to buy the A7C next week with Tamron 28-75 G2 lens. That lens provides us to customise the focus ring to our preference like RF lenses. What lens would you suggest for this camera. I'm looking for a good cheap lens that can get me started with Full frame and also good for photo and video.
If I was just getting this, I'd get the wide angle tamron 17-28mm, the 50mm 1.8 and a telephoto, like the 70-200mm. But it all depends on what you are photographing/filming. When I first started out, I had the kit lens for a long time, then I bought a 50mm f1.8, then over the years i got more lenses as I could afford them. Photography is about building up your kit slowly because as you develop, you'll have different preferances. I started with zooms, then went to primes and now I'm moving back to zooms again. For video, I mostly use the 17-28mm and the 50mm. That will pretty much cover everything you'll need.
This was such a fantastic comparison, thanks! I'm in the middle of figuring between a used A7C and a used A7III, and this video has gotten me leaning towards the c now. Thank you:)
@@mikesphotography Oh it got complex 🤦 I have an A7rii...want to get into pet photography so need faster AF and animal eye AF. But also love the croppability of this 42mp sensor. Plus the photo quality is so damn amazing. So finally...decided to hang on and wait for used A7IVs to pop up in the market next year, didn't seem worth the effort to do a half-upgrade right now just for the AF!
Lol, picking a camera is always a hard decision to make. That sounds like a good choice though. The A7iv focussing system is fantastic and the evf has had an upgrade, so photographing animals will work really well with that camera. 👍
On the A7iii it is on the back on the top right of the camera, unfortunately with the A7C it doesn't have one ... but if you don't shoot video, you can customise the record button just in front of the exposure compensation dial to AEL. Great to hear you like the AEL pano idea ... it has really sped up me shooting panoramas when hiking. As always thanks for watching Linda 😁👍
No worries. I'm glad you've found my channel as well. 😁 Lots more to come some make sure to subscribe and turn on all notifications so you don't miss anything. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Great video Mike. Very helpful. I’m considering upgrading from my current Sony ZV1 so the A7c looks the better option as I mostly make hiking videos. In your opinion, would the additional cost of the upgrade be worth it?
Thanks Anthony, I'd say yes because of the versatility you have with interchangeable lenses...THe A7C is fantastic for shooting videos and that is basically what it is made for. I love shooting video with mine... Thanks for watching 😁👍
Thank you for the review. 1. Does the A7C turn off the screen if you connect the HDMI? 2. The Sony 24-70 2.8 lens has the G button on it's side. Can it be customizable for the apeture?
No worries, I hope it has helped. In photo modes and 1080p video, the backscreen still turns off when a hdmi is connected, which is really annoying. As for the lens button, you can't set aperture to it, but you can set a custom "my dial" setting where you can switch the dial functions on the back of the camera, so with a press and hold of this button, you can shift the aperture to one of the back dials that you might not have it assigned to. DOes that make sense?
Hi there, im confused if I should get a7c or a7iii. Im getting a camera for real estate photography and I would have to use Godox V860ii-S. Because of electronic front curtain shutter turned on, does A7C works fine with the Godox V860ii-S?
For photography, I'd get the a7iii. The a7c is good, but more videocentric... The a7iii also has a faster max sync speed of 1/250 and a faster top shutter speed of 1/8000. Whereas the a7c has a sync speed of 1/160 and a max shutter speed of 1/4000. As for the electronic front curtain shutter...I've never had a problem with it...
Hi Mike, hadn't found you at this point ... In a bit of a muddle , A7c just arrived already happy with a7iii. Just wanted something lighter, but my paws are a bit big , and might miss the customisable buttons. seems to be just one..... any thoughts? I'm turning in to another Mike friend of mine he keeps buying new cameras lol.
Haha! It is all about buying new kit these days!! 😆 You can customise the movie record button as well as the rubbish button ... and also the af-on button ... but I do agree, there is space for more buttons and I don't know why they left them out. It would have been a perfect little camera if only it had two more ...
I've yet to see anyone mention this but one thing that the A7C has that the A7iii does NOT is Imaging Edge Desktop over Wi-Fi and background FTP transfer. The only other cameras that do this are the A7R iv, A9 ii and A7S iii. It can be quite handy for studio work or even having a small laptop nearby to review raw files on shoot.
Thank buddy for this video I'm now convinced which camera fits my needs cause i I've been confused about which one to get first which is A7C, and i wish u talk and do some photo and video about in future, thanks again❤💯
Your video helped me alot but I'm still confused whether i should buy a7iii or a7c my need is for both picture and video but a little bit more picture my previous was nikon d750 which i have sold kindly guide me.......
Very thorough comparison. The max 1/4000 shutter speed on the A7C puts it immediately on my do-not-recomend-to-friends list as this would preclude them to ever use f1.8 glass wide open without recurring to ND filters even with ISO set to 50 (sunny country here).
That's a good point Afonso...In that direct sunlight you'd definitely have to stop it down a little with the aperture or use an ND filter...but in reality, it's only one stop of light between 1/4000 and 1/8000 second. Thanks for watching. 😁👍
This video has softened my opinion of the a7C, the autofocus pulling looks a lot more natural for one, and the other firmware improvements do look nice too... I was never considering switching from my a7iii to it, but when the rumours were of a $1200 body and only the Ronin SC existed, I was getting kind of excited about getting one as a video focused 2nd body that wouldn't have a protruding EVF that fouls the gimbal roll motor. Fortunately DJI fixed that issue with the RSC2, so I ended up getting that, and even though I still don't like that it was easy for people to get a new a7iii body only for $1600 or so, this is $1800 and retailers have put the a7iii back up to $2k, I don't mind it quite as much - still don't like the front wheel removal or EVF for it to be a replacement to my a7iii though. These two remind me of the G85/GX85 differences but with the screen types switched around... I can't wait to see what the a7iv ends up like.
It definitely is a more videocentric camera than the a7iii and if you're after a second body, this would do the trick. I got it primarily to sit on the tripod for my talking to camera pieces for these videos and online courses...but I'm using it for a lot more than that and it has really grown on me...it's not groundbreaking...but it has a lot of cool features that are fantastic for videographers... Thanks for watching 😁👍
Thanks so much Rylan! That's a tough one. I've been using the A7C for photography now for the past month and it is really growing on me. The flippy screen is actually great for photography for low down and high up shots and also being discreet and shooting from the hip...Also if you have the lenses with the buttons on the side, I've started customising these to my dial where I can switch quickly to a different dial setup, so now, I have all of my principle settings all in easy reach... For travel, the A7C is a little better but not my much...as it's only 100g lighter and only missing the bulbous EVF on the top. If you can find an A7iii at a bargain, I'd get that, but if they are the same price, I'd go for the A7C... Thanks for watching. 😁👍
Oh man, that was great! I've been asking everyone about customizing the record button and I'm so glad they included that. Great to see the slight menu improvements as well. I agree about the white balance, I really just need awb and custom. Having separate fn menus for photo/video is very helpful. Definitely not perfect, but this more than meets my needs. I'm sure this new line of cameras will evolve very well over time. Thanks for being so thorough and showing what it's actually like to use this thing. Subscribed
Thanks so much John, really appreciate your comment and you subscribing...welcome to the club!! 😁 It would be great if they would have given the option to scale down the menu lists to just what we use on a regular basis...it's so annoying having to scroll through a huge list, especially when you only use 1-2 settings in that list! Thanks for watching 😁👍
That could be an option...I might have to get one and try it out...I suppose as long as the connectors line up between the two different ports, it should work. 👍
Hi! Thanks for the very informative video. I just got my a7c after upgrading from an a6000. I bought my a7c a few days after they started offering it at the Sony store in Bogota, Colombia. They didn't have any floor models and I wasn't able to pick it up before purchasing it. One thing I noticed after bringing it home was that something shifts internally in the camera (very slightly) when you move it around while it's turned off. It's different than the a6000, which doesn't have anything internally that you can feel shifting, whether on or off. I wasn't sure if it was the shutter or something else. It has worked fine when I've used it so far. What was your experience with the build quality?
Good question, mine does the same. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I think it is something to do with either th IBIS or the new shutter...more than likely just the IBIS design. The build quality seems pretty good...I like it and it seems to be in line with all of the other sony kit. Thanks for watching. 😁👍
Great video. I am planning to buy a camera for doing TH-cam videos(B rolls) and travelling. I would take some photos and videos. I am confused between A73 or 7c. Kindly advise.
If you're mainly going to be shooting video and travelling, I'd go with the A7C. The gyro stabilisation in Catalyst browse is really good and when combined with a gimbal it is fantastic! you're losing a few custom buttons, one dial and the joystick, but you're gaining a much better autofocusing system, the flippy screen and that gyro data. 👍
Really appreciate your inputs. I am currently having Canon 700D DSLR camera and I see it struggles with auto focus issues. So kind of annoying to do any kind of tech videos as it does focus hunting and its quite bad. So my requirement would be to shoot product tech videos and photos for my hobby. So kind flip screen is a deal. So would you help to advise on R6 VS 7C? With an decent lens
If you're on a budget, stick with the kit lens and maybe get a 50mm 1.8 from sony for that really nice shallow depth of focus look. Mid range budget: The Tamron lenses are great for what they cost. I'd get the 17-28mm and then the 70-180mm...both fantastic image quality and light for the range they give you...and then the 55mm 1.8 to fill the gap. If you have lots of money, the 16-35mm and the 70-200mm f2.8 lenses are amazing...but soooo expensive. 👍
I just picked up the A7C and the Sigma 24 -70 2.8. Question: What do we do for an Intervalometer? I'm wondering if they make a USB C or bluetooth model . . .
There's an inbuilt intervalometer so you don't need one. 👍 Tab 1, 3/14, interval shoot function. I use that all the time for timelapses and it's great. Thanks for watching. 😁👍
That's the only thing they haven't addressed ... So annoying as in theory it should be pretty straight forward for them to have a feature where you set the exposure time... The sony Bluetooth remote works in the bulb mode...you press it once to open the shutter and then press it a second time to close the shutter. Hopefully some third party companies will come out with some USBC remotes soon. 👍
Thanks so much!! It's all about the Foos!! 👍 Haha! It is actually growing on me...just wish it had that third dial... that's all... Thanks for watching 😁👍
Its a great video, Finally the best comparison/review with lots of information about menu and custome buttons. Thank you so much. I am beginner to full frame, mostly look for a7iii for better price during holiday season, if there is not offer I will go with A7C
Thanks very much Sarith! The a7c is really growing on me the more I use it. Just a shame about the missing custom buttons and the third dial... Thanks for watching 😁👍
@@mikesphotography Did you manage to make a choice ??? ahahah I'm on the same boat...A7III with nice EVF ? a7C with flip screen ? wait for a 2500$ A7IV ?
Tbh for me personally - since I don't have a lot of money - price was the deciding factor. I got the A7III for about 1500, which is 600 less than the A7C. I got the A7III with a Sigma Art 24-70 lens for 2100. This was an unbeatable price for me. Otherwise I would have gone for the A7C. For flippy-screen and comfort of use I will stick to my beloved Canon M50. Great and very detailed video!
So there’s no way to adjust iso, aperture and shutter speed individually? Is there any kind of compensation for that? Like on Nikon, you can press and hold a button and the dial becomes the iso
@@mikesphotography man. I think this is a deal breaker for me. I need to quickly change all 3. Wish they replaced it with the exposure comp but I guess a lot of people use that. I don’t. I’d rather control compensation with the 3 dials
And if you don't mind losing your data after hours of shooting/recording get the A7C, if you don't need HSS for flash photography, if you will not be holding the camera because of poor ergonomics, if you don't need an EVF, if you don't mind getting stuck with a camera that will be outdated in the next 3-6 months, then by all means the A7C is your baby.. If you only want video capabilities, I see no reason spending so much on FF when you can do so at a way lower cost on an APC or even the sony REX cameras. I wish to own a sony but it's a scary investment. I will play it safe by sticking with my Nikon d850 and look forward to getting the z6ii. BTW, this is the best and more detailed comparison I think I seen after Gerald Undone... plus, Mike is the best photography teacher on youtube..
Interesting points Josh. Would be interesting to find out more about these...I just tested the godox AD200 and HSS works with that... The more concerning one of your points is the losing your data after shooting...is this because you've heard of the camera not saving data properly or because it only has one card slot? I think this would be a good camera for someone who wants a full frame now but has little girly hands or for the occasional videographer...for anyone who already has a full frame, it isn't worth the extra investment, unless they are looking for a smaller second camera...then it would be worth waiting for the A7iv. Changing brands is always a tricky decision to make...when I switched from canon to sony, it took me a while to decide whether I'd made the right decision or not, especially after owning the fantastic canon 70-200mm f2.8 mkii and seeing the price of the sony equivalent... Great to hear your thoughts on it though. 😁👍
@@LUITESLIFE You're right. That's why I am still considering getting a Sony ff and for Sony's color. However Sony's E-mount was originally designed for APS-C cameras and in maybe some years from now, sony might consider doing what Nikon did. For now will hold on to my DSLR until I get a clear picture of where the mirrorless technology is going.
If you want the best picture quality, go for the A7riii with professional lenses, like the G master range. If you start with the 24-70mm f2.8 from sony, this will give you some top quality images if you know how to take a good photograph. Thanks for watching 😁👍
15:01, brilliant we got back touch shutter. My old A5100 had it, then it disappeared, and appeared on A6600, and now on A7C, too, the first touch shutter Sony camera. All Nikon Z and Canon R cameras have touch shutter, now Sony has that, too, excellent.
Great video Mike. It would be really interesting if you could to a stills rolling shutter test to see how well it performs under artificial light and how slow of a shutter speed you have to use to eliminate banding. I would be also interesting to see if compressed mode or if any 12bit vs 14 bit can improve silent shutter performance. No other reviewer has addressed this yet.
No it doesn't unfortunately. I think the new focussing system is more to do with hardware in the camera than the software. A7iii is currently on firmware 4.01 and this hasn't made any significant changes to the focussing system. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Your microphone! Would you kindly share what you’re using? Richness that’s noticeable that I’m seeking. Sadly it’s nit in your equip list. Thx for sharing the awesome work.
Thanks very much Kevin! It's the rode NTG3...then I play around with the audio track in audition afterwards...some compression and a bit of EQ bringing up the bass and treble sections just a little...the mic is a little expensive, but well worth the investment! amzn.to/3ogagEF I'll definitely add it to the list...not sure why I forgot to put it in...🤦🏻♂️ Thanks for watching!
Such a great review and comparison. I believe you’re the first person to cover the external monitor with auto focus issue. By any chance, does the touch focus work on the camera viewfinder while a monitor is plugged in?
Thanks very much! The touch focus reverts back to what it is in the A7iii when in the video mode. So literally just a touch to move the focus square when in the flexible spot focus area. No tracking. 👍
Still enjoying your A7c Mike? I am getting dangerously close to buying one just for having a more portable camera on hand. Or should I wait until the a7iv arrives, ha,ha! Could G.A.S. be kicking in, I wonder?
Lol! I really like the A7C but I do miss a few of the features from the A7iii, like the extra buttons and the extra dial, as well as a much better evf and the ability to go up to 1/8000s instead of 1/4000. That one stop on the fast end does make quite a difference. If I was you, I'd wait until the A7iv comes out because if it just has the features of the A7C, it will be a great camera...and if it has more...that will be even better!! 😁👍
Awesome video, Mike. I feel the pain of those flappy port covers, not a deal breaker of course but they get bothersome. Another thing is the multi port change. This video was full of useful information. Thank you. Stay safe and sane.
It was definitely interesting to go through the whole camera to find all of the differences...the little A7C is actually growing on me the more I use it. 😁👍
Hey Kalych, yes there is but it is only for the two dials on the camera, not the exposure compensation dial...it would have been great if the expo comp dial had been a blank dial like on the A6400, then it could have been included in this menu option. Thanks for watching. 😁👍
Is the lack of a joystick a dealbreaker? I've never used Sony's full frame bodies before, but coming from the APS-C line where I like using Zone focus area it can be cumbersome to have to use the d-pad to move the focus area around. I feel like the joystick is a major improvement and one of the things I was looking forward to most about the full frame bodies. I'm not sure I'd give up the ability to have a flippy screen though either. Also hypothetical, would you still get the a7c if the a7iv is released next year?
Yep, the omission of the joystick is a little annoying, but I think they're thinking we'll use the touch screen to move the focus square with the a7c...🤔 ... but having a flippy screen back is a nice change after using those annoying sony limited articulating screens for so long. That is a good question. If I was a hobbyist, I'd probably wait for the A7iv...but sometimes you can be waiting for so long that it becomes really annoying...my guess is that the A7iv will be out may/june time... Thanks for watching. 😁👍
@@mikesphotography Many thanks! All great points! I have the a7c pre-ordered (cage and screen protectors too), and for a moment I doubted myself if it was the right choice. I ended up reasoning also that if it's going to be a complement to my future a7siii, I don't mind a cheaper and lighter body. Even if the a7iv launches next year, I have a feeling it'll be at a higher price than the a7iii launch price.
If I was going to jump to full frame, this camera would be it. Ultimately I’m going to stay with my a-6400 since it’s such a good camera. I’m glad Sony is trying different things and it’s good to see improvements along the way
Most definitely Curtis! This is the kind of evolution we want to see...and even though sometimes they seem like small changes, when added up over time, they make a big difference...it'll also be interesting to see what they do with the A7iv as well...🤔 Thanks for watching 😁👍
Thank you Mike for your many fantastic tutorials. You refer to a Bluetooth shutter controler, could you please tell me which? Yours Christian Busch, Copenhagen
No worries Christian, I am glad they are helping! There is this one which is really good but a little expensive amzn.to/3pm41j8 This one is a little bit cheaper but I'm not sure of the compatibility...in theory it should work but I'm not 100% sure... The first one definitely works though. I hope that helps! 😁👍
Mike Smith I’m a hybrid shooter! Mostly video these days. The biggest gripes I have with the a7iii are the lack of a flip screen and recording limit. Apart from that the camera has become painfully slow. I’m a one man army so I really need the flip screen and no record limit. + the smaller form factor on a7c is appealing also because I travel a lot! Haven’t sold the a7iii yet but will do very soon! Thoughts?
Yep, I think this would suit you much better...it takes a while to get used to the fewer custom buttons, but once your muscle memory gets up to speed, its a great little video camera...and the tracking focus is fantastic in the video mode as well. 😁👍
Such a detailed comparison. I'm new to this field but I'm more interested in doing photography. I need your opinion in this regard as I'm a beginner. Which camera should I buy A7iii or A7C? Anyone can add their opinion :)
It depends on what type of photography you are going to do ... I'd say maybe go for the A7iii. It really is designed around photography and works really well ... and the viewfinder is so much better than the A7C. The A7C is better if you are shooting moving subjects, for instance photographing family members, sports or birds, but you'd have to use the monitor on the back instead of the viewfinder ... it is useable, but not as good as the A7iii. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching 😁👍
@@mikesphotography Thanks for elaborating Mike :) Is it possible to take pictures of moving objects from A7iii? Definitely picture quality would be different. View finder is the major plus point in A7iii and I'm more interested in buying this :D
Hello Mike! Great review! I’m torn between the A7iii and the A7C. The sale will end on the 31st, I have 4 more days. I will use it mainly for stills, photos (family portrait, weddings), never done video work. I love A7c’s flip screen and compact size and new AF but only 1 card slot, I heard a lot of people that after doing so many weddings their SD card never failed. I love A7iii’s 2 card slot and bigger EVF, but I felt like it’s too heavy for me (coming from a6000).
I hope you made the right decision and got in on the sale! Coming from the A6000, the A7C would be best for you. I've never had an SD card fail on me and I used to shoot some all day video tutorials for some big companies. I had 4 cameras filming for about 4-5 hours a day for weeks at a time and never once had a failure. I think as long as you format them in camera so the camera sets them up as it wants, you shouldn't have a problem...also buy decent SD cards as well, not the cheap ones. You can also set up the FTP function in the A7C so it backs up your photos as you go to your phone, or an FTP site. th-cam.com/video/AS3kzvKcXZg/w-d-xo.html&t Thanks for watching 😁👍
Hey Mark, I bought it as a main camera for filming these tutorials and reviews, but it growing on me the more I use it...especially that focus tracking...it just seems to lock on and not let go for photos and video! 👌 This would definitely be a great second cam to the riii. 😁👍
Thank you Mike! You are really convincing me that I do 'need' the a7c! Did you actually try out the kit lens? As I have the Tamron 17-28, 28-75 duo plus a handful of small primes, I guess I should skip it and use the money saved for more glass.....
Haha! We all "need" more cameras!! 😆 I did have a go with the kit lens but it seemed pretty restricted at 28-60mm... After a few months with the a7c, I really like it, but it is basically an a7iii in a smaller body...with better focussing. I am going to make a video on this soon, talking about how I've been getting on with it. I'd say if you already have the a7iii, for photography, there isn't much difference, but for videography it's better, especially the tracking focus...sticks like glue! 😁👍
The more I use the C the more I like it over the A7iii. The focussing is so much better, and having the flippy screen is something I've wanted for years. I'd say waiting for the A7iv announcement would be a good idea if you can afford to wait and don't need the camera straight away. Hopefully they will blow us all away with some great features in the A7iv. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Haha! You definitely get the award for the most attentive viewer! 👌 The batis lenses are fantastic...I film all of my talking to camera pieces with the 25mm batis and love having it on my camera as a walk around lens in low light. 👍
Just tried it out...I'm in the PAL setting, but I'm sure it would be similar...in 25fps 4k, 25fps 1080p, and 50fps 1080p it works, however in 100fps 1080p or S&Q mode, there is no gyro data unfortunately, so it's back to IBIS for the slowest slow mo. I'm going to do a video on catalyst browse really soon to find out all the quirks like this...👍
Can u pls try it out catalyst browse particularly in 1080p 120fps normal video mode with slog2 pp ? I saw a video where it says 120fps is not supported. Pls help me with this query. Thanks in advance.
I have the a7iii for a year now and I got the a7c as a second body and mainly vid.😍 ao happy with it! The only think I don’t like is that you can’t customize the back wheel like in the a7iii...(or can you? I didn’t find it) but now waiting to see what the a7iv offers😍
At 6:54, what is even better that the A7C got rid of the silly SCN mode and replaced it with one more custom mode, which is absolutely brilliant, just configure your 1,2, 3 modes to your preferences, and you will never go back to PASM. The Dynax 7 had three custom modes two in 2000.
The one thing I don't like about the custom modes is that they don't update automatically. SO if you're shooting through the day and you change your aperture, shutter speed or ISO, then click to another mode for a while and then back to that custom mode, it will revert to the settings you had when you first set it up. It would be so much better if it just remembered your principle settings from the last time you were in that mode...then that would make it so much more useable for me.
There are 6 customizable buttons on A7C and around 10 on A7m3 PS Specifically the down button on the wheel is free for customization when you get the camera.
That is true, but I did say not including the D pad/wheel on the back... as they both come in that format of not having the down position assigned to anything. Thanks for watching. 😁👍
@@mikesphotography agreed. The real interesting part is the movie button. This brings the A7C ergonomics in line with A6000 - they have exact same count and layout for still with Movie button treated as custom button. I basically customized the recycle bin, movie button and down button on the one I tried and it worked fine. I am not sure you mentioned the left/right eye selection in the video. That is an interesting feature. When you set the camera to seek left or right eye it actually shows preview which eye it will lock on to. This is very useful if you have several people. In that case you can use flexible spot or other small focus area to point to the person face and then lock focus on the correct person and eye..... Have a great day.
Interesting. Yes, it definitely has potential...and it is growing on me the more I use it. That is one thing I forgot to mention...The left/right eye selection is another good function. 😁👍
Thanks for the detailed comparison! I'm considering replacing my A7m3 with an A7C for unlimited video recording, but that electronic front curtain shutter being always on makes me worried, hmm.
The other thing with the A7iii is that the max shutter speed is 1/4000 compared to 1/8000 in the A7iii. on sunny days when using it for photography it does make a difference as to how wide you can set the aperture. I'd say if you are solely using for video, then go for the A7C, but if you want to use it for both photography and videography, the A7iii is still better. Thanks for watching 😁👍
@@mikesphotography I used two halogen 1000k watts ...and white balance 3200k And some pics while shooting automatically shakes tried so much steadily then also happened these...plz sir let me know
Looking to upgrade, kinda deciding between the E-mount and L-mount. L-mount because I'm trying to get deeper in the video industry and Panasonic is the only manufacturer now that has respectable video in a mirrorless (not counting the A7Siii - that's out of my budget). Unfortunately AF performance is so bad, even in stills. Sigma AF performance for the L-mount is poor. The L-mount alliance is a joke, and Sigma is more of a E-mount alliance company if anything, since almost all mirrorless lenses were developed based on the E-mount protocol first. That said, Sony has proven they can put 10 bit in their bodies, but who knows when the A7iv will come, and whether it will even have 10 bit. The A7C is tempting just for the improved autofocus. I do hate the ergonomics, but I wonder if it's a price I have to pay while I slowly invest into the E-mount for the A7iv. For a video-centric full frame, I really wished they had something like Panasonic, where you can scroll through white balance kelvin instead of shooting white balance cards, which is horribly slow and cumbersome on the A7Sii and A7iii. I just want it on a customizable dial.
Yes, the focussing system in the panasonics is pretty rubbish. I watch a few travel vloggers and the ones that shoot with the GH5 really do struggle with their focussing on a regular basis...as soon as I see the focussing hunting around or just sitting on the background, I say to my wife, I bet they are using a gh5...and 9/10 that is exactly what they are using. It's a shame as the panasonics are fantastic cameras apart from the focussing. The focussing system in the A7C is good...and yes, let's hope they give us 10 bit in the A7iv... I think it will be released around June/July 2021...but I could be completely out on this one... Thanks for watching. 😁👍
First ever review that i saw that actually shows what the camera is like to use in my own hands. Would love to see a review from yourself about the tamron 28-75 vs sigma 24-70. I just got a7iii but i am torn between gm 16-35 vs tamron 28-75 vs sigma 24-70mm. they are all f2.8 - So confused as what to buy!
Because im on apsc shooter before so I choose the a7c because the lightweight and very handy for travel photography and street like a phone so small LOL not being professional look but powerfull
I chose the a7III over the a7C because I had the a6000 and the overheating was bad (shooting weddings). When I saw a7C in that small body and the single card slot, I said no. Scary stuff for professionals.
By "shooting" do you mean, photography or videography? If I don't have the AC on my A7C does overheat after about 30 minutes of constant filming, but it is 35 degrees here with about 85% humidity, so that does take it's toll, but for shooting documentaries, short films and tutorials, it is fine...and also, filming in normal climates!! 😆 I've filmed a lot of weddings and it really does test your gear like no other...I used to shoot with 3 GH4s and the A7sii for the low light stuff, all cameras had just one card slot and I never lost a single shot...as long as you buy good quality SD cards from a reputable dealer, format them properly and be careful with them, they will last...and multi-angle shoots with a second shooter means that if any card was to fail, there would be other angles to use. At the end of the day, they are both great cameras and produce good quality video and photos. 👍
@@mikesphotography I'm shooting videos in weddings and the temperatures in peak season are very high. This summer we had 40C+ and we shoot for very long time. Overheating on the a6000 was a joke. It was overheating in about 20 minutes of continuous recording and after a stressful workday I replaced it with a VG-30 which has served me nicely since ~2015 until last month. Also having b-roll cams is rare because of the budget being limited. I've had one accident with an SD card a photographer gave me. It was a Lexar and just stopped recording during the ceremony and I quickly removed it, inserted my own and I kept going. Thankfully the footage until then it was OK.
@@perseusarkouda Oh wow, in those temperatures, most of the modern mirrorless and dslrs would probably overheat. I was doing a video shoot in the desert behind Dubai a few years ago and had to keep going into the car with AC to keep the temp of the camera down. I completely understand that it would be highly frustrating at a time sensitive shoot such as a wedding!!
@@mikesphotography Yes, that's why I was sacrificing better features over reliability. The VG-30 never failed me but on the other hand the picture was not competitive enough anymore. Now shooting 1080p in a 4k camera and hoping to not face the same problem as the older compact cameras had. However VG-30 still has a place in my bag just in case. I just wish instead of more compact cameras Sony would focus to more reliable cameras. I'm reading even a7S III or even more the FX3 (with it's internal fan) has temperature issues on video in high ambient temps. The best combination for me it would be a GH5 tank camera with Sony's sensor, autofocus and low light capabilities. I wouldn't mind the bulky size at all!
Sir Taking me a camera for family photography. Extremely lowlight excellent images quality results...daytime amazing sharpnes clerty dynamic range best in..a7sii..a7r2..which camra body suggest me...I'm used camera buy in 2hand camera market..my budget 1300 usa dollar...You tell everyone a camera from your side. Please guide me
6:29 I don't believe that any menu is better or worse then the others, they are different. The worst situation is that you have three cameras with totally different menus. You have to practice menus, and honestly when you set up your camera it's really rare when you go deep in menus, and you have the custom menu options.
Most definitely...whatever menu you have, you'll end up getting used to it...and like you said, having three different menu systems is really annoying if you have to switch between cameras all the time. Thanks for watching 😁👍
@@mikesphotography Having touch operability for the menus on A7SIII is definitely a big improvement, and I fully agree, it would be worth learning a new menu system. In this respect it was shame that Sony didn't apply the same menu as the A7SIII.
Fair and balanced post, Mike! Well done.👍 Have A6600 and A72, will wait for A74. A6 type dials/wheels can be vexing, especially accidentally changing ISO when rotating wheel; definitely need front and rear dials. Bummer on lack of multi-port, and poorer IBIS. The one SD card is only type 1, yes? Flippy screen is good; when shooting portrait orientation; do you have option to display settings info in portrait orientation as well?
Thanks Paul! I'm definitely looking forward to the a74 release...I reckon it'll be march-june next year (but I could be completely out on that!! 😆). It does feel like they've taken the brains and body of the a6600 and put in a full frame lens...yep, it's a type 1 port, and I haven't found a portrait orientation for settings...although that would be quite cool if it switched everything in the portrait orientation. 😁👍
I want a full fram video camera coming from the a6400 cant afford a7siii so i looked into a73 and a7c,, the only thing that scares me is the lack of stabilisation since its so light
I'm in the same boat, I couldn't justify spending all that money on the A7siii at the moment. The A7C is the little brother of the A7siii and comes pretty close. I haven't found any problems with the weight either ... and with stabilisation, the gyro data is fantastic and really does make handheld shooting without a gimbal a viable option. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Nice video, few tell about multi port omission. Was Sony corporation waiting for Nujon to launch Z5, Z6 m2 & Z7 m2 before launching A7m4. Its like they are deliberately withholding themselves to see their competitors move. Its not hard for Sony to launch A7m3 in body of A7s3 with vari-angle screen call it A7m4
That is true...but I'm hoping they do more than that for the A7iv...hopefully they will release it mid next year with a lot of the newer functions and features in all of the cameras in their range... Thanks for watching. 😁👍
Its hard choose which one is great for us. Damn. Before i want to upgrade to a7iii. But now when the a7c came out. Its hard to decide man lol. I used photography most of the time. But video once in a while.
I did think that it was a bit silly of them to change the design of the evf. I tried fitting the extra eyecup to it from my a6600 and it definitely doesn't fit does it...🤦
Ah... that is a pity. It is pretty much this one thing that keeps me from going for the a7c. I love the small body of the aps-c line but kind of need the better low light capability of a full frame.
So there are big savings to be had on Sony cameras at the mo...check it out if you're in line for a camera body: alphauniverse.com/stories/save-big-on-the-sony-a7-iii-and-more-with-special-deals-on-sony-alpha/
This was the best comparison that I have seen. I am still loving my A7III. I do wish that it had a flip screen, though. Hope all is well.
Thanks so much dude! The a7iii is going to be a top performer for a long time yet...😁👍
This is the best A7C review on the Internet. Great stuff. I am subscribing. Wish your channel the best.
Thanks so much Mainak...and thanks so much for the sub, much appreciated! 😁👍
Been searching a7c DAILY to get an answer on whether or not the record button and exposure dial is customizable. You answered both. GREAT detail.
Great to hear I could help Aaron! It's such a shame the exposure compensation dial isn't a customisable one...would be so much better if they'd have included that.
Thanks for watching.😁👍
thanks for going so much in detail with this! it helped a lot as I'm trying to decide between these two cameras for quite a while now 😅
Wow dude you did so much work here. Thanks a ton!
No worries, I was surprised at how many things were actually different in the A7C, so decided to document what I found...the more I use this camera the more it is growing on me...especially the autofocus tracking...it's ridiculously good!
Thanks for watching 😁👍
This is the best a7 iii vs a7c video
Thanks very much!!
Great video. I still can’t decide between the 7c and the 7iii , I’m mostly looking for a camera for pictures, not so much videos, which one would you recommend?
Thank you in advance 🙏
Thanks Luis,
I'd say if you use the EVF a lot, then the A7iii would be better, if you photograph a lot of moving objects that you need to track, then the A7C.
I hope that helps.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Great video
I'm looking forward to buy the A7C next week with Tamron 28-75 G2 lens.
Thank you:)
Great to hear I could help Vineet! Have you decided yet!? 🤔
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Great video I enjoyed watching I just received my A7C
Thanks very much Lori!
I hope you enjoy the camera as much as I am!
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Wowwwww your review's so much detail on menu system. It's really help me so much and I like it. Thanks you
No worries, I thought I'd dive deep in there to show you what was really different! Thanks for watching! 😁👍
Can you turn on the eye AF manually when display monitor is attached to the a7c?
Yes, I shoot all my studio talking to camera pieces with focus wide, and eye af on, and it keeps a box linked to my eye.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Interesting! can I ask where is the AEL button is? I've just learnt how to do the pano's from your video on the a7iii
@@mikesphotography Thank you

Great video Mike. Very helpful. I’m considering upgrading from my current Sony ZV1 so the A7c looks the better option as I mostly make hiking videos. In your opinion, would the additional cost of the upgrade be worth it?
Thanks Anthony,
I'd say yes because of the versatility you have with interchangeable lenses...THe A7C is fantastic for shooting videos and that is basically what it is made for. I love shooting video with mine...
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Great breakdown of the settings and features! This is really helpful!
Thanks very much Lance! 😁👍
Excellent review, once again. Thank you!
I am photographer and I decide to start videgraphy and focus in photography and videography. what do you prefer to me? 7c or 7iii?
If you are going to do both, either wait for the A7iv or get the A7C.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
@@mikesphotography thank you so much
Hi there, im confused if I should get a7c or a7iii.
Do you know if you can upgrade the viewfinder cup on the a7c to make it more comfortable?
That's a good question David...I haven't seen one yet...It isn't a nice eye piece is it...I'll let you know if I find one.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Hi Mike, hadn't found you at this point ... In a bit of a muddle , A7c just arrived already happy with a7iii. Just wanted something lighter, but my paws are a bit big , and might miss the customisable buttons. seems to be just one..... any thoughts? I'm turning in to another Mike friend of mine he keeps buying new cameras lol.
Haha! It is all about buying new kit these days!! 😆
You can customise the movie record button as well as the rubbish button ... and also the af-on button ... but I do agree, there is space for more buttons and I don't know why they left them out. It would have been a perfect little camera if only it had two more ...
@@mikesphotography decision made, my beak presses the screen, would be annoying the amount of pics i take in one go. gonna go back unfortunately...
THE BEST REVIEW ANYWHERE
Amazingly detailed with photos for the best understanding. Keep up the good work mann
Thanks so much Kabir! 😁👍
Thx for this video. Do you use back button focus on the 7c?
No worries Eric, thanks for watching. Yes I do, I set it to the AF on button. 👍
Can I use hss flash and flash trigger with a7c ?
Yes you can. 👍
I'm glad I could help. I'll definitely be doing more with the A7C in the new year...and also, most of my A7iii tutorials will work with it as well. 😁👍
Your video helped me alot but I'm still confused whether i should buy a7iii or a7c my need is for both picture and video but a little bit more picture my previous was nikon d750 which i have sold kindly guide me.......
If it is a little more photography, go with the a7iii, whereas if it is more videography, go with the a7c. 👍
Thanks for watching 😁👍
hi.. is the internal audio recording the same please?
Good question. It seems quieter, so I have to bump up the levels from 1 to 6 in camera from a rode NTG3 going through a juiced link preamp.
Great video with in-depth details. If I only do travel/landscape photography with zero interest on video. Does it make more sense to go with a7iii?
It would be great if they would have given the option to scale down the menu lists to just what we use on a regular basis...it's so annoying having to scroll through a huge list, especially when you only use 1-2 settings in that list!
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Could you use the c port with your accessories and just buy a tiny plug converter? I have one that is only like 3/4 inch long and half an inch wide.
That could be an option...I might have to get one and try it out...I suppose as long as the connectors line up between the two different ports, it should work. 👍
Hi Mike, good job as always ... for astrophotography, would it be the same, but with fewer buttons? ... cheers from Chile
Exactly! It's the same sensor so will give you the same results. If you already have the A7iii, no need to change to the A7C.
Thanks for watching. 😁👍
@@mikesphotography Thanks!
Thanks for clarifying i also noticed this and it made me think my camera was broke lol
You pretty much covered it all brother. Good job
Thanks so much!
I'd still go for the a7c. It's just a stable unit with no overheating issues and solid 4k as well as 1080p...and a really good dynamic range 😁👍
@@mikesphotography great thank you. Any choice of lens😃?
If you're on a budget, stick with the kit lens and maybe get a 50mm 1.8 from sony for that really nice shallow depth of focus look.
Mid range budget:
The Tamron lenses are great for what they cost.
👍
Just doing photography, considering 300 off currently on a73 making it 100 cheaper than a7c, is it better to go a73 or a7c still for minor upgrades
For photography, I'd say go with the a7iii, especially at that price. 😁👍
@@mikesphotography Thank you, good info! But, what about long exposures?
That's the only thing they haven't addressed ... So annoying as in theory it should be pretty straight forward for them to have a feature where you set the exposure time...
The sony Bluetooth remote works in the bulb mode...you press it once to open the shutter and then press it a second time to close the shutter.
Hopefully some third party companies will come out with some USBC remotes soon. 👍
what is that marks on your right hand bicep
That's one of my tattoos. 😁👍

The a7c is really growing on me the more I use it. Just a shame about the missing custom buttons and the third dial...

Thanks very much! Sounds like you got a great deal with the A7iii.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
So there’s no way to adjust iso, aperture and shutter speed individually? Is there any kind of compensation for that? Like on Nikon, you can press and hold a button and the dial becomes the iso
I think there is in the custom menus, but then that uses up another button of which there as so few.
@@mikesphotography man. I think this is a deal breaker for me. I need to quickly change all 3. Wish they replaced it with the exposure comp but I guess a lot of people use that. I don’t. I’d rather control compensation with the 3 dials
Yeah, it would have been much better if the exposure compensation dial was fully customisable...
It's definitely a good addition, expanding those touch screen options a little. 👍
Very nice and fair comparison. I learned a lot too! Thank you for making this video. New subscriber too.
Great to hear it has helped!
Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing, much appreciated. 😁👍
Thanks so much Fred...I'll see what I can do...might make an interesting topic on it's own! 😁👍
at 2022 does a7iii catch up after firmware updates? regarding af and so on
No it doesn't unfortunately.
It's the rode NTG3...then I play around with the audio track in audition afterwards...some compression and a bit of EQ bringing up the bass and treble sections just a little...the mic is a little expensive, but well worth the investment!
amzn.to/3ogagEF
I'll definitely add it to the list...not sure why I forgot to put it in...🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for watching!
Will the A7III have a firmware upgrade to allow one to disable timed video.
Who knows...it all depends on how much time the Sony techs want to spend on the a7iii firmware...only time will tell.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Thank you for such a deep comparison!
No worries, thanks for watching Ruben.
Very nice comparison! Thank you!
And thank you for watching. 😁👍
Hey Mike, is there a ‘My Dial’ function in the a7c menu like in a6400?
Hey Kalych, yes there is but it is only for the two dials on the camera, not the exposure compensation dial...it would have been great if the expo comp dial had been a blank dial like on the A6400, then it could have been included in this menu option.
Thanks for watching. 😁👍
@@mikesphotography thanks Mike. Great comparison!
Good comparison. Thanks 😊
If I was going to jump to full frame, this camera would be it. Ultimately I’m going to stay with my a-6400 since it’s such a good camera. I’m glad Sony is trying different things and it’s good to see improvements along the way
Most definitely Curtis! This is the kind of evolution we want to see...and even though sometimes they seem like small changes, when added up over time, they make a big difference...it'll also be interesting to see what they do with the A7iv as well...🤔
Thanks for watching 😁👍
i'm already proud here having the A7R MKII :)) but the comparison is sublime!
Thanks so much! The A7rii is a fantastic camera and will continue to produce great results for years to come!
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Great review! Do you live in Thailand?
Thanks Jira, yes I do! 😁👍
Great comparison review.
Thanks very much! 😁👍
Thank you Mike for your many fantastic tutorials. You refer to a Bluetooth shutter controler, could you please tell me which? Yours Christian Busch, Copenhagen
No worries Christian, I am glad they are helping!
There is this one which is really good but a little expensive amzn.to/3pm41j8
This one is a little bit cheaper but I'm not sure of the compatibility...in theory it should work but I'm not 100% sure...
The first one definitely works though.
I hope that helps! 😁👍
Hands down best comparison video! Thank you so much for this!
Thanks so much! It was a fun one to do ... and the A7C is definitely growing on me!
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Mike Smith This is the only video that convinced me to get an A7C by selling my a7iii!
Do you shoot video or stills!? Have you sold it yet!?
You can also set up the FTP function in the A7C so it backs up your photos as you go to your phone, or an FTP site. th-cam.com/video/AS3kzvKcXZg/w-d-xo.html&t
Thanks for watching 😁👍
This is an art attack
Great review and comparison! Liking the look of the C. Already have the R3 so this would be a second/backup, and probably daily driver....
Hey Mark,
I bought it as a main camera for filming these tutorials and reviews, but it growing on me the more I use it...especially that focus tracking...it just seems to lock on and not let go for photos and video! 👌
This would definitely be a great second cam to the riii. 😁👍
Great video Mike. Tilt screen forever though! 😛
Thanks so much! Haha! ... Now it'll be interesting to see what comes out on the a7iv...🤔
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Thank you Mike! You are really convincing me that I do 'need' the a7c! Did you actually try out the kit lens? As I have the Tamron 17-28, 28-75 duo plus a handful of small primes, I guess I should skip it and use the money saved for more glass.....
Haha! We all "need" more cameras!! 😆
I did have a go with the kit lens but it seemed pretty restricted at 28-60mm...
@@mikesphotography is the lack of stabilization due to weight a pproblem im here for video?
Leaning toward the C. But I am going to wait through the holidays for the announcement of the IV.
Wow at 5:17 you have a Batis, I love Batis lenses, too.
Haha! You definitely get the award for the most attentive viewer! 👌 The batis lenses are fantastic...I film all of my talking to camera pieces with the 25mm batis and love having it on my camera as a walk around lens in low light. 👍
Love batis
Does catalyst browse stablizes in 120fps?
That's a good question...I'll try it out today and let you know. 😁👍
"Agnib Das ,no I don't think it does - its capped at 50/60 fps". A comment from a Facebook user.
It doesn't work in 120fps...the gyro data is only recorded up to 50fps in PAL and 60fps in NTSC.
@@mikesphotography Good point Sir. Hmm for each custom mode an additional setting could solve this dilemma: Autoupdate Custom Settings On/Off.
Now that setting would be a game changer...👍
There are 6 customizable buttons on A7C and around 10 on A7m3
PS Specifically the down button on the wheel is free for customization when you get the camera.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
bro ....my a7iii some times getting shakky while taking photos ....one focusing on non moving Subject .... please replay
Sounds like you need to raise your shutter speed. Do you shoot under natural light or do you use flashes?
@@mikesphotography I used two halogen 1000k watts ...and white balance 3200k

So the most of differences are sofware. I wonder if Sony will upgrade a73 firmare?
Yep, a lot of them are software based.
Thanks Arshad. 👍
Once I get my hands on both of those lenses, I'll definitely do a review.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
If only Sony would acknowledge the shutter issue in the A7iii. It’s such a dark cloud over the ownership for me ☹️
Hey Gavin, so have you had one fail on you?
Awesome video!
Thanks so much Febin. 😁👍
@@mikesphotography I will hit you up in Insta for more advise. Thanks for the reply Mike, i was waiting for your video 🙂
You don’t discuss on the steady shot ?
I'm pretty sure I mentioned the IBIS/stabilisation in there somewhere...🤔
Because im on apsc shooter before so I choose the a7c because the lightweight and very handy for travel photography and street like a phone so small LOL not being professional look but powerfull
I can't do time-lapses on my new slider with my new camera (that multi-port)!
What slider do you have? Maybe the slider company offers a usb-c cable option?
I chose the a7III over the a7C because I had the a6000 and the overheating was bad (shooting weddings). When I saw a7C in that small body and the single card slot, I said no. Scary stuff for professionals.
By "shooting" do you mean, photography or videography?
If I don't have the AC on my A7C does overheat after about 30 minutes of constant filming, but it is 35 degrees here with about 85% humidity, so that does take it's toll, but for shooting documentaries, short films and tutorials, it is fine...and also, filming in normal climates!! 😆
I've filmed a lot of weddings and it really does test your gear like no other...I used to shoot with 3 GH4s and the A7sii for the low light stuff, all cameras had just one card slot and I never lost a single shot...as long as you buy good quality SD cards from a reputable dealer, format them properly and be careful with them, they will last...and multi-angle shoots with a second shooter means that if any card was to fail, there would be other angles to use.
Got the a7c
It's a great little camera isn't it! I use mine all the time now! 😁👍
Thanks for watching 😁👍
best comparison video.
Thanks very much Hayat! 😁👍
Get the a7iii
I could not live with the EVF in a7c. On my a6500 I need the eye cup, why Sony have removed that from the a7c is a mystery.
