At 4 minutes 40 seconds into the video you ask is that brass or copper and took a file to it. How do you distinguish between the two they both would show a yellowish color
The biggest starter I ever found was a one from some heavy truck and it contained about 16 pounds of copper, but it was without a solenoid unfortunately.
@@scrapitall200 Copper is much heavier than aluminum. I suppose you have guessed that way earlier than showed in a video while checking with file. Or still hoped?
I don't take starters apart any longer. Rarely is there enough copper to make the time worth it compares to a regular electric motor. Now you start adding aluminum is the coils, forget 'em. My scrap yard actually pays pretty good for starters as they are, twice that of regular electric motors. Ask your yard.
The best way to remove the copper from the rotor is to stick it into some hot coals on your grill and let the heat burn away the lacquer. The copper contacts will also come free from the rotor with the help of a screwdriver. Not only will this free up all the copper on the rotor, it will also make it #1 instead of #2 copper. Keep a bucket of cold water handy to drop it in after it stops smoking, it'll be nearly red hot.
not sure how he got 4.50ish for 1 ounce of copper ..they pay 4-5 dollars a pound so id say he added wrong there.. unless he meant pound . i go by pounds and so does my yards around ehre..
So little copper. I once took garbage disposal motor winding thinking it would be copper. Took about 2 hours pulling winding off only to find it is copper clad aluminum. Not worth my time. Copper on stator will come off easier if you burn off resin they put, but you will probably spend more money in propane.
Starters that are all copper are pretty good. I have a video on garbage disposal, doesn’t take very long at all, but they are pretty much always aluminum. Burning copper is illegal where I live and my scrapyard won’t even buy the copper.

Thank you for watching.
At 4 minutes 40 seconds into the video you ask is that brass or copper and took a file to it. How do you distinguish between the two they both would show a yellowish color
Brass is bright yellow, almost like gold color. Copper is an orange-ish red-ish color.
Hope that helps.
A short roast will loosen the armature wires.
Burning copper is illegal where I live
it depends on the year, i know microwave transformers are aluminum but the early ones are copper
There is still newer microwaves with double copper, just scrapped one today.
👍
Thank you!
The biggest starter I ever found was a one from some heavy truck and it contained about 16 pounds of copper, but it was without a solenoid unfortunately.
@@Peter-gc4pm that’s awesome! The other two starters I did had great copper in them, that’s what I was expecting with this one.
@@scrapitall200 Copper is much heavier than aluminum. I suppose you have guessed that way earlier than showed in a video while checking with file. Or still hoped?
@@Peter-gc4pm I knew right away once I held it that it wasn’t copper. Yes, I was still hopeful 🤣
@@scrapitall200 Yeah, copper is a 21st century gold. It's in a big demand these days.
Absolutely! Will be interesting to see where scrap prices go over the next 5-10 years.
I've got a nice big tractor starter to do let's see what i find
@@paulfrost8413 I bet it will be copper! At least I hope it will be for you.
I did talk about that scrapyards have their own category for starters. It’s worth it to me as a hobby scrapper.
Should have only cut the “difficult end”. Then you could have something to pull with
@@JosephWett-vw7zp sometimes scrapping is trial and error lol
The best way to remove the copper from the rotor is to stick it into some hot coals on your grill and let the heat burn away the lacquer. The copper contacts will also come free from the rotor with the help of a screwdriver. Not only will this free up all the copper on the rotor, it will also make it #1 instead of #2 copper. Keep a bucket of cold water handy to drop it in after it stops smoking, it'll be nearly red hot.
@@scrapman502 that is illegal in my state and my yard will not buy the copper.
That's probably why starters don't last
@@quinton3997 I completely agree.
What is copper???
Copper is a metal that is used for electricity, plumbing and other various purposes.
I would buy that whole for 10 dollars and sell as a auto core
Where’s the fun in that? 🤣
4449th woohoo
Wohoo 🎉
That looks like a Chevy starter?
You are getting rusty buddy lol
not sure how he got 4.50ish for 1 ounce of copper ..they pay 4-5 dollars a pound so id say he added wrong there.. unless he meant pound . i go by pounds and so does my yards around ehre..
That’s the total value of all the copper
Oh no wonder mercury isn’t that a ford 😂
Of course 😂
hi
How come you never comment about the video?
@@scrapitall200 idk thought i'd say hi
@@smitchlego no worries! Hello 👋
That must be a aftermarket Chinese starter grrrrr aluminum
The best 🤣🤣
So little copper. I once took garbage disposal motor winding thinking it would be copper. Took about 2 hours pulling winding off only to find it is copper clad aluminum. Not worth my time. Copper on stator will come off easier if you burn off resin they put, but you will probably spend more money in propane.
Starters that are all copper are pretty good.
I have a video on garbage disposal, doesn’t take very long at all, but they are pretty much always aluminum.
Burning copper is illegal where I live and my scrapyard won’t even buy the copper.
You need a Bertha
Send her in the mail please 🤣
I think you'll just break even on the motor price. Leave it as it is.
I go over all the numbers! 👍
