    Temples are my favourite places to visit on my trips to Japan, the cities tend to stress me out a lot so spending an hour to enjoy the atmosphere of the Temples and Gardens is always a highlight for me.

      But I think it gives you are warped picture of Japan, because
      A) most Japanese aren't zen, they belong to a different Buddhist sect.
      B) Most Japanese don't take Buddhism that seriously any more. Only for funerals. So my advice is skip the temples, visit #Osaka.

    Thanks Quinlan. That's a beautiful temple. I used to live in a Soto Zen temple when I was younger doing some shugyo for a while. Listen to the monks, they have quite some stories to tell and their life philosophy is fascinating. Zazen is deeply rooted in the daily life of the temple and it is actually quite tough. Back in the days, we started the day sitting 2h from 4-6am and ended the day with 2h zazen from 7-9pm, with some days sitting for up to 15h per day (!). The temple was high in the mountains so it was actually quite freezing especially early in the morning, but no socks or hats allowed. The stick the monk hit you with is called kyosaku and in reality they would hit you quite a bit stronger than the gentle touch he gave you in the video. But nothing compared with rinzai-zen, where they do not use this half-cut bamboo stick, but a much harder version.

    • @GoNorthJapan
      @GoNorthJapan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, sounds like you've had some amazing experiences!! Was that at Eiheiji? Also didn't realize that the provide more pain at Rinzai-shu temples..!

    You dont even need to sit to meditate. You can stand, walk or lie down. You can do anything, as long it has no purpose. It is to stop trying… and accept the void. The still, amazing, heart-opening moment that surrounds us. We are not isolated, we are not singular, we are part of a whole.

    Amazing!! The sheer compassion in his voice when he is explaining the "zazen" shows his years and years of mind training. You can see a zen monk and experience instant "attraction" towards them, you are near them and you know and in this video can see something the zen monk has that we lack. 🙏🙏

    This explanation of meditation makes it sound so much more manageable! Makes me want to try (along with the idea that I, too, could be facing a beautiful garden while doing so). Seeing the beautiful temple and grounds and the statues of the Kami makes it all a bit more relatable too, compared to the interviews with the zen monk alone. And all of this when you were trailed by a camera crew! I had not expected such a calming yet fascinating video to come out of that arrangement :)

    Thank you for this exceptional video. I started meditating about a year ago and understand a bit more thanks to you and the master of the temple. When I started to meditate my mind was all over the place and could not make my mind rest. Now I go to a trans-like place. It's more like images of things I think of, instead of full thoughts. Sometimes I come to and am bend over almost to the floor, so relaxed. (Would get a few stick taps for sure as they would think I fell asleep, lol.) Feeling at peace with myself and my surroundings.

    just a wonderful visit. thank you. very inviting. I was also happy to watch because Miyazawa Kenji was from Iwate. There is something about that sensei (I'm sorry, I don't recall his name now) that seems so soft, so firm, so clear and caring, a full left hand and a full right hand together, that I hope others will be encouraged to spend some time with him and practice zazen.

    It looks like a wonderful temple. I'm rather corious what the tv team made of your trip there but I guess i will never know. The temple is beautiful and the monk seems so kind! There seems to be a train going from oushou which is pretty cool it means I could even go there for a change! I have never done a meditation...was it not hard to sit like this for so long? I am not sure i could get my legs into that position in the first place...but it is rather tempting. I wonder what else they offer. I will have to run their website through google translate I guess
