I saw a few old D4’s rigged with a 12 volt starter on the fender, set up to pivot. Had a V belt to pony motor pulley. Had a battery, and a bar for a handle to put tension on the belt to crank the pony motor. Worked pretty good. I’ve yanked on a starting rope more than I cared to. Might be why my shoulder is shot.
If you’ll grab the plug wire end coming out of that magneto while cranking, it’ll start faster. LoL

Back in the 60s in Sth Australia, I drove a Cat D6 37a with a pony motor that was looked after and started easily. Then in the late 70s I was contracting to put in bush tracks for loggers in Tasmania. They had an old 933 Cat loader with a pony and it was a real pain in the rear. I used to walk about a mile to get a log skidder to tow start the Cat with the winch. It was easier than trying to start the Cat by hand. Almost pulled the bucket through the fairlead before I was able to stop the winch.

My dad and I had an ole D4, 7U back in the mid 70,s, it was a little newer than this one. The fuel tank was behind the seat. I started it with a rope, the first time, standing on the track. The rotten rope broke, over backwards I went, landing on my head on the frozen ground, I wuz lucky to not have broken my neck. After that I always pulled the rope standing on the push arm. We used to skid logs with it. When I went to log skidders, I sold the D4 to the farmer we were working for. That was 40 years ago, I think its still on that place. I will check on it .

I ran my first dozer when I was 8 years old. It was a 1955 D4 and I had a blast. 11 years later I got a job with a company that had that same dozer and man did it bring back memories, the iconic sound of the pony running, then the diesel taking over. I ran that little 4 for 33 yrs before retiring in 2008. The company still has it in use. I dont miss the hand clutch, steering and blade levers compared to today's servo controls.

You are spot on about the loader hydraulic kick out. I drove a 966 c way back when. It was set up so that it would kick out so that the bucket would be level when it was lowered to the ground. Helped with safety as well because, being a two lever set up for the hydraulics, one could lower the bucket while the tilt looked after itself, so you're not driving around as much with the bucket raised.

Could not see how he shut off the pony motor... It is necessary to cut off the fuel and let it suck the carb dry. To just kill its ignition and leave gas in the carb is a no-no, it will leak into the crankcase and dilute the oil. There is precious little oil in those pony motors to start with, and its splash oiled at that... Keep em running! that is living history, the sound of America being built.

So great to see the D4! Mine is a far cry from a show piece and that's fine for now as I enjoy my young grandkids learning to operate it. Looking at an old truck with a 3408 that is blown. Jeff and D4 friend did you see squach253 advice video on pony motor use. Do not turn off magneto on pony when the engine is started.shut off the fuel and run the carb dry. This prevents the carb from flooding the pony motor and diluting the quart of oil in the pony motor causing failure of the pony motor.
