Ihave struggled with a slice forever. But your explanation of the geometry as well as the progressive drills is very helpful. I just tried this as you suggested at the range and it is working. I know it’s going to take practice but you’ve given me hope I can learn to hit a draw. Thank you!!!
I like the straight to the point style. I’ve watched dozens of golf teaching videos where you’re treated like a beginner. The vast majority of viewers are amateur golfers who are experienced and know a lot about the game but need tips to tweak their game or cure a habit. What you get here is some respect and acknowledgement that you are a GOLFER already.
Adam, just wanted to say thanks! I am a lifelong baseball player that always struggled with an open club face, even though I have a decent golf swing in general. This little drill really has helped reduce the amount of times I’ve missed to the right. Incredibly helpful and straight to the point!
Hi Adam! Finally!!! A video that I can apply to my swing that makes sense! I’ve watched COUNTLESS videos on how to hit a draw or stop slicing and the common theme was to swing shallow and/ or finish more to the right. Neither ever worked for me- shallow resulted in coming in so low that I often “drop kicked” my driver and trying to swing further to the right produced near misses and a really awkward swing path with almost no power. The example you give with the ping pong paddle or tennis racket actually makes wayyy more sense! Thank you thank you thank you!!! This works!!!!
Wow, I’ve been playing for a year and could never figure out why I was slicing. When you say that, you can’t just plug in a swing and try it, that makes complete sense to me. Taking baby steps makes way more sense, and has led me to hit my first consistent draws yesterday. Thank you so much for this.
I have struggled with slicing my drives. I watched many videos to no avail. Then I watched this video. Your use of a tennis racket resonated with me. I needed some kind of key while swinging and that was it. When I played tennis, I could hit top spin or back spin shots. So today, I was finally able to manipulate the club head by thinking of hitting a slight top spin shot with my driver. Finally, I was able to stop slicing the ball and hit it straight or a slight draw. Not just with my driver but with my irons as well. I can't thank you enough.
I went to the driving range this morning after watching this video, having played a bit of tennis in my youth I understood exactly the point being made , it didn't take long to get the feel of a slight twist closing the club face through impact. What this did for me was eliminate a violent slice or extreme fade to the right as the ball landed . What would look like a good shot , when it landed would go 15 or 20 yards to the right . I understand these are early days . However it was the best trip to a driving range I can remember ! Thanks for the tip .
It can be done folks! I took my 79 year old father to an indoor golf place yesterday so that I could show him in slow motion what his club was doing at impact, because he struggles with a slice (and I have a natural inside out swing). And within ten minutes I had him going from a pretty drastic outside-inside swing to an inside out! I was able to use this video to build his swing up just a little at a time and to use Adam's words, in a very playful and fun way and that quickly he had it! That's the key, play around with it and don't be in a hurry, walk before you run as the old saying goes!
Mr Bazalgette thanks for all your help, a question, can you teach how to draw a ball with a hybrid (4,5,6,)o fairway wood ( 3 or 5) thanks. JC Rodriguez el paso texas
@@Scratchgolfacademy Thanks for share your knowledge, i been playing golf for 3 years and 3 months i start the year a 18 hcp, i follow you videos and im a 11 hcp. Thanks again.
Riding the R to L wind. One of the fundamentals of golf. Tee it high, swing up through it to the outside, and most of all hold your head back, don't peak. Nick Faldo illustrated this shot from Royal St. George's last week. He claimed to even use it to control distances into greens based on the pin positions. He even illustrated that with actual hits with both cuts to the right, and wind riding left flights
Tried this today at the range…I went through the drill and I have to say that out of a large bucket of balls, I only sliced about 8-10 balls towards the end as I was beginning to tire. It felt a little funny trying to exaggerate my hips to the left and I did start to top a few shots, but for the most part, I was able to straighten out my slice with one bucket of balls. Still have a lot of work to do and I am trying to get my wrists working properly and swinging from the inside out rather than over the top, but I do believe your instructions helped and I have a new confidence to be able to hit the ball straight down the fairway…which will then generate a new feeling of enjoyment for the game!! Ty
Watched a lot of your videos lately after decided to try and work on the mechanics of my swing. Everyone is helpful in some form and very easy to follow. Also the 'playful' mental side to learning really has helped. More patient about getting results than getting frustrated after every bad shot. Thanks Adam 👍
thank you very kindly Adam, your lessons are great ! To add one observation, .. , I have found that changing to a baseball grip with a normal full blooded drive, gives a wicked drawn verve or spin on the ball towards it's latter flight path, looping in in a jimmy connors top spin style, so for the top hand, tuck (both) thumbs in, hands facing opposites, it's the fastest way to nuke a troubling slice, by tucking in the thumbs, it allows the club to switch hit thru at impact, crossing over, hands crossing over radically and immediately, as the top hand thumb does not lock impede or bar this flexion movement, so it adds power and accuracy aswell, and after about 30 practise drives it becomes a tad sore on the bottom hand thumb joint, but it's the best grip by far for guaranteeing atleast a 3 to 5 yard curve in bend in the shot ! And for heavy shots, the most accurate, yet clearly softly softly is a better style. Just a brief comment, the grip i learnt from a golf manual from ivy league Boston colleges written in the 80s perhaps. Based on my recollections. 👍👌
Yes, the swing is in a circle, so there is a natural opening and closing, plus you can create more whip and speed this way. Hope this helps. All the best, Adam

Want to thank you I've been struggling lately watching to many videos I find that yours to be helpful I,m left handed and have problem rolling my right wrist seems to be more mental any suggestions I,m. going to stick with your methods. Thanks
Hey Adam--thanks so much for this video. Belief it or not, the swing cue that helped me the most was "relax and have fun!" So far with this instruction my slow 40% swing goes about 200 yards with a slight draw. Unfortunately, my longer swing goes about the same or less. Probably just need to incorporate the relaxed mind set on the longer swings Thanks so much, and as a golfer just rejoining the game after 30 years away, I appreciate all your videos. Cheers!
Adam, Thank you for offering such a great video. Liked how you broke it down into simple steps, then built on it gradually. Different views were great. Got more of the idea when viewing from behind the ball. Viewed it first last week. Tried it this past weekend. Wow, I can do that! Thanks again. Bill A.
Adam I have learned so much binge watching your videos over the past few days. My family thinks I'm nuts for shifting my hips and snapping towels around the house. Really awesome content. I played twice during that time and am noticing a huge difference in ball striking with irons especially. I was hitting ground before the ball often with irons and your vids have given so much insight into correcting that. Just thinking about snapping the towel during setup has made a huge difference. I will never miss a vid and will tell all my golf buddies to tune in great job. Also your swing analysis of pro golfers is best around.
+Milhouse Van Houten I really appreciate your kind comments, and I'm glad you are making some progress. I appreciate your offer to share the content with friends (my partner who is the tech guy says Facebook works really well), and hope they get something out of it.In my days of really working on my game my family thought I was nuts too!Best, Adam
took your tips right to the course, no warms even. hit a couple pull hooks, then next 3 drive were beautiful draws right down the middle. I never had any luck with the draw thank you very much.
Kevin,Thanks for the note. I'm glad it helped you. With practice I trust you'll be able to do it (and lots of other things in your game) with precision and consistence.Best, Adam
Could you please comment about ball position, keeping the club face open and the grip? I seem to hook the ball when the shots are rushed or with the strong grip. I have also read maintaining the wrist angle same all the way is critical. Great teaching videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Shailesh, Thanks very much. I'm a believer in pretty standard ball position (middle to a little forward of middle for irons, driver left instep), but it's not a hard and fast rule. Regards the grip, obviously the real key is delivering the clubface the way you want to through impact, rather than the grip. What I'm suggesting is that you need to find a grip that you find makes it easiest for you to deliver the face squarely to the ball, and it's a bit different from one player to the next. Sorry I don't have a more clear answer, but I hope this helps a bit. Best, Adam

Thanks again Adam. I told you it worked on the range, I took it to a tough breezy links in Kent on Sunday and after a couple of holes where I was stuck between old and new swing I started trusting this technique and just kept hitting fairways. All my playing partners said they have never seen me drive so consistently. Just got to get my iron play sorted now😀
Great video as always sir. I am a serial ‘down hitter’ of the ball (-5 degrees on average). Do you have any advice for controlling this/differentiating driver swing from iron swing, as I believe it it causing me to slice.
Josh, I have a number of videos at this channel about the driver in general. Also, at www.scratchgolfacademy.com I offer full video courses, including one on the driver, I hope you'll consider it. All the best, Adam
Hi Adam; I tried this yesterday & can hit a snap hook but can't get it up in the air. Any thoughts? Also, I recall hearing that when hitting a draw, the ball should be teed lower & moved back in your stance. Do you agree? Thanks.
Mike, If anything move it back, but only a little. I'd experiment with tee height, but likely leave it the same. My guess is the toe is slamming past the heel at impact turning the face left (which is ok as you experiment with drawing the ball), which also rolls the loft off the club. At impact get the handle of the club (grip end) more up and ahead of the clubhead. this adds loft back and gets ball started more to the right. best of luck! Adam
Mike, It's an option for sure. Either way, the golfer has to feel the club through impact (a lot can change, and often does from address to impact), but if starting a bit closed helps then that's fine. Best, Adam
+UC3hNjcBylBEqM9jfZw01_-w what's worked for me is the ladder. Set up a closed and do your normal swing. Timing is too hard if you ask me and I am scratch. feel free to check out some of the content i post for more instructional content
Thanks for the tips. I've been striping my drives but there is a dogleft par 5 that kicks my butt and Im lookin to find a good way around. Hopefully this works for me!
Love your simple directions & also me being a new golfer your reminder to "No overthink" & get the consistent feel. Can't wait to see more & ready to practice today!!
if i can have a question, i thought the draw comes with a clubface open to the target line, but closed to the swingpath, as the ball starts always perpendicular to the clubface, it needs to be open to the target line. is it a wrong startement?
You are correct. An ideal draw (one that starts right of target and draws back to target) would be as you described. The ball does not start perpendicular to clubface, it starts between clubface and swing path. However it starts closer to face than path, about 75% relative to clubface. Thanks, Adam
I’m a fader ,usually ,that can of course turn into a slice , my home course has 2 holes that a fade just won’t work so I’d love to develop a reliable draw , when I try (I stand a little closed , hood the clubface face a little and try hard to stay down on the shot )the shape is starting straight but turns bit right at the end ending up right rough or sometimes running into bigger trouble. Anyway my main point is some pros who fade have tried to draw the ball and gave up on it eg Martin kaymer and Collin Morikawa , kaymer in particular supposedly messed his game up doing it , should you stick to what you good at ?? I’m a 3 h cap , Also could just practicing a draw help to straighten your fade ?? Great video as always Adam !!
Gerard, That's really a personal thing. If you can 'quiet' your conscious mind, keep rehearsing the moves you want, then step up with nothing but a simple mental picture of the swing you can probably get it to the course in some fashion pretty soon. Hope this helps. Best, Adam
Could you pre-set the club turned near target line and swing in to out? That makes more sense to me than flinging the hands around, and it would make the swing occur naturally. Just my two cents. Thanks for the tips!
You're right Adam! Controlling the club face at impact is something you have to be mindful of, but I think this can help players that aren't concentrating on that in their swing, and mainly want to think of swing path! Cheers!
I am trying to draw but ball goes to right as a big push. It will not curve. What am i doing wrong. My stance is close, and path is same way with strong drip. I come from inside out. I am puzzled. Please guide me.
Club face is open (aimed right) at impact. Do small scale and overdo tilting the face towards the ground through impact until you get some smother hooks Best, Adam
Getting it going right to left is not my issue, overcooking it is. I struggle with stance alignment and clubface alignment when I am trying to do this. Im really trying to figure this out cause my go to shot off the tee is straight and I know enough to know that isnt good. When I am struggling I miss on both sides of the fairway. Liked the video though and I think with some work I can get it figured out.
A draw tends to go farther is the real reason. But, practically speaking, a fairly straight ball flight is the easiest to play with. Often working on something like a draw can build skill and awareness, even if it's not a 'bread and butter' shot. Best, Adam
to draw my ball i simply start by setting up a little closed to the golf ball ( to the right of square) instead of square, swing path is an in to out more in to out then your average normal swing, down the line swing path should be more out to the right than staight or down the line (kinda like your pushing out to the right with down swing). thanks for tips
attack angle has to be coming from the inside....imagine a golf ball right imagine 3 points or dots at the bottom of golf ball left middle right. the aim is to hit the left side (inside of goll ball) so attack angle has to come from the inside
can you please do a video ware a left handed person does the stuff you instruct? I watch all your vidios but they're hard to understand because I'm left handed. thanks!

I just aim right a bit, grip it with the face slightly closed, and swing normally. Works almost every time! Opposite is true for a fade.
Sounds good Toby.

Adam Brilliant So clear your the man....thnks
Thanks for the comment Phillip.

Right on, Pro! And what's the difference between a draw and a hook? About 1.5 strokes per hole.
I hear you Tim, I’ve hit plenty of hooks in my time.

Great video as always sir. I am a serial ‘down hitter’ of the ball (-5 degrees on average). Do you have any advice for controlling this/differentiating driver swing from iron swing, as I believe it it causing me to slice.
Josh,
I have a number of videos at this channel about the driver in general. Also, at www.scratchgolfacademy.com I offer full video courses, including one on the driver, I hope you'll consider it.

Excellent to see the coorrect way being shown too many people are taught to flip instead of turn the hands over 👏
Thanks very much Graham

Hi Adam;
I tried this yesterday & can hit a snap hook but can't get it up in the air. Any thoughts? Also, I recall hearing that when hitting a draw, the ball should be teed lower & moved back in your stance. Do you agree? Thanks.
Mike,
If anything move it back, but only a little.
Adam
Thx a very practical approach to teach myself
Hope you make progress
Hi Adam;
I was wondering if gripping the club a bit closed at address might be easier than trying to close it at impact with your wrists. Thanks!
Mike,
It's an option for sure. Either way, the golfer has to feel the club through impact (a lot can change, and often does from address to impact), but if starting a bit closed helps then that's fine.
Best, Adam
do u manipulate club head as in rolling the golf club over? or do u just set up closed and do your normal swing?
Dee,
You can do it either way. In that video I was turning the clubface in the downswing. Hope this helps.

+UC3hNjcBylBEqM9jfZw01_-w what's worked for me is the ladder. Set up a closed and do your normal swing. Timing is too hard if you ask me and I am scratch. feel free to check out some of the content i post for more instructional content
Hello I'm? Playing golf and would like to have help on hitting the golf ball more on the fare way not going to the right

Thanks for the tips. I've been striping my drives but there is a dogleft par 5 that kicks my butt and Im lookin to find a good way around. Hopefully this works for me!
Best of luck with that. I hope this helps you!Best, Adam
Move to the left side of the tee & hit a fade. Might cost a little distance but much easier to do consistently.
This is exactly what I was looking for..I like your baby steps 1st..then work your way up.......Leland
Thanks Leland.

Love your simple directions & also me being a new golfer your reminder to "No overthink" & get the consistent feel. Can't wait to see more & ready to practice today!!

Adam, this video is simply fantastic - you are THE MAN! I cannot wait to hit the range after this
Thanks, I'm glad it was helpful to you.

Exactly my thought, I'm A pretty decent ping pong player. Work the paddle for directional shots and translate that concept to the driver for a draw
Thanks, hope you make progress
if i can have a question, i thought the draw comes with a clubface open to the target line, but closed to the swingpath, as the ball starts always perpendicular to the clubface, it needs to be open to the target line. is it a wrong startement?
You are correct. An ideal draw (one that starts right of target and draws back to target) would be as you described. The ball does not start perpendicular to clubface, it starts between clubface and swing path. However it starts closer to face than path, about 75% relative to clubface.
Thanks, Adam

Thanks for the comment Stephen.

I’m a 3 h cap ,
Also could just practicing a draw help to straighten your fade ??
Great video as always Adam !!
Thanks Alan.
Practicing different shape shots generally builds skill, even if they are not your ‘go to shot’
New to the video... how long would you recommend to work on this at the range before you take it to the course?
Gerard,
That's really a personal thing.
They are both acceptable ways, although just because we set face a bit closed at address by no means guarantees it will be there at impact.
Best, Adam
You're right Adam! Controlling the club face at impact is something you have to be mindful of, but I think this can help players that aren't concentrating on that in their swing, and mainly want to think of swing path! Cheers!
Love your instruction
Thanks very much
I am trying to draw but ball goes to right as a big push. It will not curve. What am i doing wrong. My stance is close, and path is same way with strong drip. I come from inside out. I am puzzled. Please guide me.
Club face is open (aimed right) at impact. Do small scale and overdo tilting the face towards the ground through impact until you get some smother hooks

At 80 yrs old is still fun to play and be one of the top 10 golfers in the world by age
What about shutting the Club Face and swinging in to out to in?
If you mean shutting the face at address, that can work. You've still got to have some feel for where it is at imoact though.Best, Adam

Great tip.
I can do this, question is how do I stop?
We all have to fiddle with it to find the right mixture.
All the best, Adam
THANK YOU!
You’re welcome
Getting it going right to left is not my issue, overcooking it is. I struggle with stance alignment and clubface alignment when I am trying to do this. Im really trying to figure this out cause my go to shot off the tee is straight and I know enough to know that isnt good. When I am struggling I miss on both sides of the fairway. Liked the video though and I think with some work I can get it figured out.
Thanks, and hope you make good progress.
All the best, Adam
Thanks Adam
Glad you liked the video

What is the purpose for hitting a draw? Is it better to develop dead straight drives?
A draw tends to go farther is the real reason. But, practically speaking, a fairly straight ball flight is the easiest to play with. Often working on something like a draw can build skill and awareness, even if it's not a 'bread and butter' shot.

Man that course is pristine.
Thanks, Mediterra (in Naples, Florida) is a lovely place.

awsome vid
Thanks very much Chris.

that grass is so nice
Yes, Mediterra is a beautiful place.
Thanks for watching the video Richard.
to draw my ball i simply start by setting up a little closed to the golf ball ( to the right of square) instead of square, swing path is an in to out more in to out then your average normal swing, down the line swing path should be more out to the right than staight or down the line (kinda like your pushing out to the right with down swing). thanks for tips
attack angle has to be coming from the inside....imagine a golf ball right imagine 3 points or dots at the bottom of golf ball left middle right. the aim is to hit the left side (inside of goll ball) so attack angle has to come from the inside
Thanks for your interest in the videos, and for your comments.
