But the Navy put out a requirement for a new Aircraft that was cheaper to operate then the F-14. Northrop enlarged there original design and McDonnell Douglas contributed by strengthening the undercarriage and making the aircraft carrier capable. @Joshua N. Ajang I read way back when they took the best pilot from the navy and best pilot from the airforce and pitted the F14 up against the F15. I'm no expert but in this contest the F14 won.

The block III definitely smooths our the lines of the aircraft. Almost like going from 80s to 90s to now where the have really perfected smoothing out cars for better aerodynamics.
I hope, at least the Block III will get the F414 EPE engines, finally. The Block I and Block II F414 engines are more than 25 years old and even if it was around 30% more powerful, than the old F404, it was not enough powerful to the much heavier Super Hornet. The EPE is ready long time ago, but neither the Boeing, nor the US Navy were interested in it. I don’t know, why. The other old bug is the weird, canted pylons, which were the most bizarre “engineering” solution of a too lately revealed design issue. Because of the airflow around the new intakes, from the original straight pylons, the dropped bombs and fuel tanks could collide to the fuselage. Instead of a proper new position of the pylons, the McDD’s engineers just turned outwards the pylons, to generates a twisting aerodynamic force to preventing the collision. During the era, when Boeing bought the McDonnel Douglas Co, there was no time/money to make a correct redesign. The result is a much higher drag, far less range and more stress on the airframe. The Super Hornet lost all range and speed advance on the legacy Hornet, what was demanded. In 2020, if Boeing would like to beat Lockheed and the performance of the F-35 family, somehow has to solve these old issues.
I realize this is an old issue, but to update on what has happened since this video was posted: The Block III wasn't planned to get the F414 EPE engines. The reason is quite simple: No one, in the US or elsewhere, was willing to pay what it would cost to actually develop the EPE, which is a "paper" engine. There were parties interested in looking at the EPE as long as someone else paid the large sum of money necessary to develop it. No one thought the benefit gained was worth the upfront cost. The Super Hornet has not been a big success in export sales. Australia bought them without competition because they felt it would be a good placeholder until they could get the plane they really wanted, the delayed F-35. Kuwait bought them to replace its aging Classic Hornets, but they bought Typhoons as well. Aside from those two, there have been no export sales of the Super Hornet that might produce a market that would be interested in developing the EPE. Boeing's losing Super Hornet bid to India included the EPE, but that meant India would have to shoulder the development costs, a prospect that didn't appeal to them. The other nations that are building aircraft that use the F414 (Sweden, Korea and India) aren't producing enough to justify the cost to develop the EPE. The problem with the wing pylons on the Super Hornet, is that by having six instead of four the inner ones were too close to the fuselage and there were safety concerns about launching powered ordnance off the inner pylons. This wasn't discovered until flight test. If you look at the first Super Hornet prototypes, they had straight pylons,; angling them out on later airframes was done to make the pylons usable for weapons launching. Boeing has no illusions about competing with the F-35, but was hoping to sell it as a cheaper alternative if you didn't need all the F-35 could do. . However, whatever you may think about the plane, the F-35 has won every contest in which it was entered. Boeing was going to shut the Super Hornet line in 2025, but Congress directed the Navy to buy 17 more, so that has been postponed until 2027.
And a continued F-14 upgrade program would STILL have produced a superior fighter. The Hornet's only advantage was that it made the Navy's calculator and pocket protector crowd happy.

Just wish they would've designed the 'super hornet' to where its redesigned engine inlets where extended further towards the cockpit, closer to the front landing gear, to where it met flush with the trailing edge of the wing. That way, they'd have more area for external hard points to mount dead weight to the underbelly of the plane and not just its wings.
I see a lot of comments here talking about a tomcat 21. I would like to see one also , that said i think most people would be disappointed, since it would end up being similar to the super hornet. There would have been a conversion of power to reliability, lower fuel consumption and easy of maintenance on the engines. The fuselage would have to be adjusted for partial stealth. The weapon system would end up being similar to the hornet since something like the aim -54 would have problems operating today and in logistic terms making things as uniform was possible since we are not living in the cold war , where budgets would flex in response to your enemy. All of that would have impact on the "new tomcat" . I like music videos and so I seen this song tribute on youtube "Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet - Numb Linkin Park" and I had also seen the youtube video "LOCKHEED F-35 TRIBUTE - CALL ON ME" and also "Doug Stone - In A Different Light Lyrics" and "Garth Brooks - The Dance (Lyrics)" and it made me think of this song again "Debbie Gibson - In Your Eyes" and so I was just saying that I thought that the F/A-18 was a very important plane!! Thank You!!
What happened to the Advanced Super Bug?
Excellent stuff bro
Awesome F/18 SUPER HORNET !😎👍🏿
I am curious as to what 'Block' means...
@VFA-102S Diamondbacks I was more curious why the term is called 'Block' really
And by when do they plan to integrate into the F-18 Block III the vector nozzle engines that add greater maneuverability, as well as their Russian counterparts..??
For me I like f18 with large area display but to have new capability on stealth capability that will be awesome
Any irst onboard?
Rest In piece block II. You will be missed.
For the last 2 years, it seems Boeing can't even make a functional paper bag. But I do believe They did and are doing an amazing job with the F-18.
Conformal fuel tank
Great job
How about a renewed F-4 Phantom..all with digital controls, new engines, and modern avionics..would be the true badass fighter.
Woah that cockpit is awesome but doesn't look like a hornet anymore ;(
It's called progress
Sweet looking jet
Even today, I do not believe that my Brazil did not choose this aircraft.
Thank you "John Knudsen Northrop "
Friendship ended with F-35C, now F/A-18E Block III is my new best friend
India will be 36 of them
Significant upgrade. Should just call it the f18G
It already exists, it's called the E-18 Growler. It replaced the E-6 Prowler as the electronic warfare aircraft.
i don't know jack squat about planes but that looks cleannn
Might get this for my mom next mothers day it might fit in the ol backyard
Great video 👍
I hope RMAF can get 10 at least for F/A-18 (Hornet and Super Hornet) MRCA squadron besides Flanker MKM and other candidates(Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, F-35 B) who replace Fulcrum M.
If Canada won’t buy the F-35 then at least get the block III
Canada can't even pay their grunts, you think they're going to buy new planes when help is just south or west of the border?
It’s ok Canada, you can have our second hand F/A-18s, best regard from Australia 👍🇦🇺🇨🇦
R Soul they're spoken for! An American businessman poached the lot!
Dolly Rancher Canada bought 25, but I didn’t know about the deal you spoke of until you just told me. The man in question bought 46 for agressor training. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I had no idea 👍
It's pretty cool for him, isn't it. Good on Canada for adding to her fleet
I wish the Royal Australian Air Force had stuck with the Super Hornet. Now equipped with Growlers, Block III Super Hornets would have been a more efficient and effective capability than the F-35.
Love the US 🇺🇲 from France 🇫🇷
Hi, I would like to repost your video on Instagram if possible
Oh wow Hemo left Lockheed and went to Boeing!
Ah yes super hornet my favorite aircraft i even wanted to have the model toy it took me two times and the second time i got it what i wanted and the first one i do have but i lost it :(
come on Boeing, come out of this max debacle...we need you.
Boeing:I used F 18 to destroy F 18
Malaysia should procure the Block III Super Hornet up to 3 squadrons. It should complement existing F/A-18D and Flanker fleets to deter the South China Sea aggresor PLA.
Eagle Dynamics better get on this, and where's our Longbow!?
Nice aircraft!!!!!
malaysia need a few..come on in..
Can you fix the ECS, it freakin sucks, keep gettin AV Air Hot caution every couple days and had to change almost every P bar and S bar
Why is it called F/A-18 and not just F-18?
It was designed as both a fighter and attack aircraft, which is why it gets the designation F/A.
Wait you guys can make a functioning product still?
Their civilian and military branches basically operate independently, the military branch will never stop churning out functioning aircraft.
I know that im just saying like maybe they should be asking these guys for some pointers 🤷♂️
It could be a good buy for Indian Navy
I'm sure the Navy still misses the F 14 Tomcat , but at the same time , they must realise that the world has moved on - my 5 cents worth
Not so much, everyone prefers the F-14.
India should consider this planes
Wow....India waiting for 114 FA18 Super Hornet planes as per MMRCA 2.0 😍
போடா புண்டா மவனே 💣🖕💣
Essentially the JF-17 and F-18 had a baby but the baby took 93% of the F-18s genetics.
Looking those big low back intake ... remind me for Sukhoi flanker family .. specially last scene takeoff for distance 😁
