      It's probably due to the Dice Tower's general tastes skew away from super dry euros like Concordia, with a few exceptions from individual reviewers, if Chris Yi was on this list I bet it would be on his.

    • @hucz
      @hucz ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used to think it was fantastic. But it started to feel like a game kind of like chess or Root in the sense that every thing happening in the game is extremely important and thinky. Dry, punishing, very strategic, and the reason it went unmentioned IMHO, not very 'fun'. Feels like an exercise in efficiency and IQ and not much else.

    • @nerzenjaeger
      @nerzenjaeger ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hucz I agree. I found it incredibly dry. Good, but dry. Devoid of fun. For whatever reason, I don't have the same problem with Brass Birmingham.

    • @hucz
      @hucz ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nerzenjaeger Very different game. Concordia has pretty straightforward rules to explain. Play a card, do that action. The action itself can at times be difficult to think about, but it's the weight of that action and when it's taken that is the core of the game's strategy. Brass Birmingham has more complicated rules to explain and more actions and decisions, imho. The player interaction is more integrated and it feels more fun for us becusee of how the game plays and the theme. I'm not explaining it very well but, I think they're pretty different games. I would compare Brass more to Barrage if I had to pick. Concordia more like Hansa Teutonica or Le Havre. At least for me.

    • @nerzenjaeger
      @nerzenjaeger ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hucz They are very different, but they have a reputation of being "not for everyone". I actually wouldn't compare it to Barrage, because that game, though both are very interactive, is very much a rules-forward game, which I think Brass isn't as much. Personally, I've found that Brass is quite a tight rules set, it's just a sub-optimal teach, because of its exceptions. Thanks for sharing your perspective, always interesting to read, how other people perceive these games. Brass for me is full of life, which Concordia isn't, even though I owned and like that game.

    This was a fun list. 🙂 For me Eldritch Horror was the top 2013 game, it's easily the most played game with one of my gaming groups despite being a bear to set-up and a pretty long game. My number 2 is Euphoria, I just love the theme in that game and with the expansion it plays very well solo too. My number 3 is tougher to pick. The most played game for that spot is Pathfinder Adventure but, like Mike, I got a bit burned out on it after a while. So I think my #3 would either be Welcome to the Dungeon or Nothing Personal, they're both games that are a lot of fun but that I haven't played recently.
    P.S. Tom mentioned not having played the second edition of Carnival Zombie yet. That game is great! I finally got a copy last year and it's easily my favorite zombie horde game. 😄

    Lots of good games! Forbidden Desert was the first cooperative game I ever tried, and I still have it! Didn’t try Freedom The Underground Railroad until last summer, but I agree, it was very respectful and interesting! Kobayakawa was underwhelming to me; I’d rather just play poker (sorry, Zee). Sushi Go is even enjoyable to my students, who are notoriously picky as to which games they will try. I liked Viticulture when I first played it … need to play it again because it’s been a long while. Concordia is great and I am very tempted to get my own copy (despite the app being broken and expensive).
    In 2019 the owner of a local FLGS bought 20 or so copies of Kashgar because he was sure that it was going to become the next classic. He didn’t count on the bad cover art dissuading people as much, nor the accidentally untranslated German components in the picture on the back cover. No one bought it. That year for a Boxing Day sale he sold copies of Kashgar for super cheap and everyone bought them, so having a copy of Kashgar has become a sort of litmus test for how long you’ve been gaming in my city. 😂

    Honestly I think Freedom: The Underground Railroad is one of the best cooperative games ever made, it's more famous for wonderfully handling the tough theme, and that's amazing, but it's also just a tremendous design. It's very different, everything makes sense, it flows well, it's just fantastic.
    Of course it's sad when there are slaves you can't help, but I think that's Academy doing history well. It's not a game where you can miraculously save everybody and single handedly end slavery. It's about knowing you can't save everyone and doing your best to grant lives to the people you can. I understand why some people are pushed away from playing it at all, even with everything I'm saying I don't bring it out that often, but I would suggest anyone give it a shot at least once, it deserves it.

    I think there are two scales for scoring games. If you are counting during the game then I think it feels good when 100 is considered a good score. If all the scoring is at the end then I would say 50.

    The year that I got into gaming hmm, going to have to go back a bit like a really long time ago. It was the rocking 1960's and the year was 1965 and I was eight years old. There was no Euro type game back then but their were still games to play.

    Kashgar definitely deserves more love. I think number 10 was too low Zee, come on!
    I also love Lewis & Clark and I will play it at 3 if everyone knows the game and what they need to do. With new players, it is hard to get it to a fast pace. Besides that, I still feel feel the race is more interesting at 3 than at 2. Playing it at 4? Sounds like a challenge I would have to be convinced somehow to be part of.

    Ah, I also didn't realize that Firefly came out that year. That was the year after my first ever board game group started. The whole crew loved the show and one of our number bought it and brought it. I loved the flavor, of course, but god did the game itself suck. The flight deck in particular was just awful. Everyone else got the luck of the draw in their favor and got to move where ever they wanted at will. I never got more than one space before disaster struck and stranded me. I frequently found myself limping along without fuel. I got maybe one or parts of the objective done by the end of the game if I was lucky.

    "Tom Vasel, Zee Garcia, and Mike DiLisio take a look at the ancient past and talk about their favorite games that are a whole decade old, older than most of the people on the Dice Tower staff."
    Is Dice Tower saying they hire underage workers? lol
