My favorite part of the year is when everyone shares the board games that stood out to them. I get to find a bunch of games to look forward to playing for the next few months.

At the beginning of 2021 I did not think this was going to be a good year for board games, but now there are SOOO many games I want to play!
I don’t think the energy gels as well as normal with Stephen added in, but I mean this in a respectful and productive way. This is just my opinion. Thanks for the video.
Counterpoint, I immediately hit play when I see the Podfather is guest starring on a video but I love how his PoV mixes it up. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I thought that the first time Mike showed up, but every time after that, I loved his insights. I think having a 4th is always a little jarring to the format... it doesn't really matter who the 4th is.
I don't even know who he is but I loved the banter, self humor and passion 😁
I am 100% with Zee on dice throne adventures. If you cannot purchase that box on its own and play it, it is an expansion.
Do you know if it will work with Marvel's Dice Throne?

Stephen has a point about being able to list 10 games if your job isn't a reviewer.
Most people don't play 10 games in a year that came out that year. Unless you are a reviewer that's only for a handful of fanatics.
And even if you did play ten 2021 games in 2021, your 10th place is like the worst of them. You'd need to play a lot more than 10 to make a list of 10 good games.
So maybe Stephen isn't qualified to be on this list, but I love the guy so I'm glad he was there.

I'm very curious what the Dice Tower Awards deem eligible this year. Half of Tom's list wasn't available for most people this year. I KS'd The Great Wall and still haven't gotten it, but reviewers got it months ago
Zee is always a great source to find great games for me, he delivers again ! Except Ankh, I hated that game after 30 minutes in ... but I haven't played with 2 so I can't judge on it like Zee did.

Always a great video that I look forward to viewing every holiday season. But guys, after roasting Stephen, BGG has Vagrantsong as a 2022 game.
As per the questions about including Ark Nova on the 2021 list: The Dice Tower strives to be a global channel (I think) and this has been the hottest game in Germany this past couple of months, as well the top game on the BGG Hotness for weeks. I can't remember the last time I saw a game hold the top spot there for such a long, continuous period. Basically every gaming family I know here in Germany (except us) got this game for Christmas. That is a total of six copies of the game. No clue if it will take off as fast when it drops in the U.S. in a couple of months,, but yes this game is big.
Great number 1 Mike. It really shot up to my top 10 games of all time. I have the expansion characters and haven't even tried them yet. Finally cracked into secret stash. Love it so much. Podfather your #1 is great as well.
I hadn't even heard of mobile markets until yesterday's list, it's definitely on my radar, now just need to get Meadow, Vagrantsong and Arknova

I added 18 games to my thinking about it list in BGG from this and the surprises list, so many new good games!
Surprising that Terraforming Mars Ares isn’t on Tom’s list he was raving about that game in the 4 Squares review
I think Ark Nova probably knocked it out if the list. Anyway it's definitely gonna be on the 10 More Great Games list Tom teased.
I played Blood on the Clocktower about three and a half years ago now back in June/July in 2018. There was a person who got their hands on a prototype during testing or something. I only got to play maybe two rounds at a local game store on a specific night but I loved and and had been waiting for it to show up on Kickstarter or somewhere but I forgot all about it. Looking forward to it coming out later this year then.
Never heard of adventure tactics, I’m putting that on my radar for sure now. Deck builder + Gloomhaven = sold.
Santa delivered sleeping gods early, and this made me want to open it and dive in. So excited to play that game.
Love Adventure Tactics! Another comparison is that if you are an old school video gamer and played Final Fantasy Tactics, this is the board game version of that.
@@andrewjohnson5550 even more sold now! FF Tactics was one of my favorite games growing up. I enjoyed Krosmaster Arena (board game) for scratching a similar itch too. Adventure tactics is now on my “buy on sight” list 😀

2021 was a great year for games. There was no time to play them all, but I manage to squeeze these in:

Lists like this make me feel like as soon as I get around to playing a game theres a new one that makes it obsolete.
I do feel though that this year feels weak compared to others, if you have a look at how much the guys enjoy picks from previous years - I won’t be surprised if a lot of these games don’t make their top 100 list

Really surprised to see Cascadia on Zee's list! In the 4 Squares review, he gave it a 7 and said it was a pleasant game but very by-the-numbers and he wasn't even sure if he'd add it to his collection. His opinion must have shot up dramatically in the last 2 or 3 months. I'd be really interested to hear what changed for him.
It happens, look at Blood Rage for Sam Healy. From what I recall, he was pretty "meh" on it in the beginning. 😁
Sleeping Gods and Ark Nova are two games I definitely want to buy. Hopefully I'll have the opportunity to do so soon. I'd also like to try Meadow, Cascadia, and Blood on the Clocktower. I feel like I've been hearing about the latter for 5 years now. Maybe it will actually be released in 2022?

As someone who really didn't like 7 Wonders that much... Architects sounds like a game that I would like to own!

We loved 7 Wonders Arquitects. Its super quick and slightly unbalanced but we enjoyed it. We loved Iki even though it hasn't generated much buzz, but a solid one in our fam. Genotype is on our wishlist close to buy it because it looks fun with enough crunch for us.

Wow, Whale Riders at number 3! Now I just have to hope that the legal battle between Knizia and Grail settles in a way that sill gets me (and anyone else) my pre-order.
Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition a 45 minute game? I've played it 3 times so far 9 (with 4 people), and it tends to go on for close to 2 hours, almost as long as a game of regular Terraforming Mars...
Not the A group, you all are the control group, tested and true. Which makes the other top 10 video...experimental.
With Vincent D’Onofrio being cast as Kingpin in the MCU, we can now feel relief that Tom Vasel didnt get the part. That means more board gaming goodness for us for the foreseeable future.

Blood on the Clocktower is practically 3 years old at this point. Seriously. Anyone who wanted it could easily get the print or online version. By the time they release the physical copy, it will be old news.

Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition is my favorite of 2021 and once everyone knows the game really well (and some of us have played it a lot), it takes about one hour. Starting out or teaching others, closer to two hours.
Do you play at 2p? If yes do you use a third dummy deck? Because for us a 2p game is above 1.30 hours.
@@fayVR No dummy deck and we've clocked in at around 1 hour. Of course, we also don't audit each others plays and advancements so everything each phase we do simultaneously.

I love Ares Expedition and only like Terraforming Mars. I have never liked Ryan Laukat’s games. Only because they game is too short. When I play any of his games, I feel that I just getting started and the game is over. Perhaps Sleeping Gods is something that I should look at.
The lesson to learn from this is that Tom needs to play more new games with Stephen.

It seems crazy to me that someone could play 10 new games in a year. Just the cost itself seems rediculous. Maybe if you have a cafe or something that updates crazy fast

That's not a knock against Buonocore, who is a fine gentleman, but what is he doing on *this* Top 10 if he hasn't even played ten 2021 releases? It basically means that every new game will make his list - and some he hasn't even played. You could have gven him a top 5 and everybody else a top 12 to even things out :-D

OK i get why IKI is not on the list. It's a new edition.
Having played Meadow recently, I can now sympathize with Stephen with his negative opinion. What a tedious exercise of scanning dozens of symbols on cards every turn and then placing in your tableau. Boring, repetitive, too long, and zero tension. No amount of theme integration can save it from these flaws IMO.
