I just love these videos. I just got started with hand lettering at the end of 2022. I practice a lot and I am seeing such improvement. I am taking note of your recommendation to save some of my earlier work to see how far I have come. My hand lettering issues are:
1.Shaky upstrokes, but I'm noticing that it is only with certain pens, such as Faber-Castel brush pen and Copic brush markers, so I don't use them. I have the best upstrokes with Tombow and Stabilo pens
    2. I find myself mixing lettering styles. I'm too indecisive at times. Example sometimes I fancy a loopy "r" and other times I go for the block style.

Hi Fiona! Thanks so much for watching & I'm so glad to hear it's going well! As for your issues, I'll admit, some pens are just better with this than others. I personally don't use the copic alcohol markers (also the Winsor & newton alcohol brush markers) because they just seem to struggle with the motions we use in brush lettering. Another recommendation is to use a smooth paper if you aren't already. And I think it's totally fine to mix styles! In fact, that's probably how you'll start to develop your own signature style... over time you will probably start to notice that you gravitate towards certain combinations, but it's totally fine to experiment too! I hope that helps & thanks again for watching!

@@HowtoHandLetter Thanks. I learned the hard way that the paper is so important. I ruined a few pens early into my journey by using multi media and cheap notebook paper. Now I have switched to Rhodia and HP premium . I also have started paying attention to my own internal state of relaxation. I have noticed that if I am tense, exhausted or anxious, I struggle with my lettering and my upstrokes are shakier than usual (even though lettering usually is very calming).
Thank you again for your encouragement. I'll make sure that I am subscribed to your channel.

I struggle alot with getting my letters to be more round and bouncy. Mine are straight and square almost. Not the look I'm going for. I used to do a little calligraphy years ago, and I can't seem to shake that square professional look. I want round and fun! 😁

Great tips! You should do a video series (like your Pen A Day Challange) comparing brush pens!

Me too. Its helpful when they show real-time lettering. Once you go slow and get the results you want, it gets easier. I am mentally repeating to myself "Slower, slower" when I am lettering.

Hey, I recently started hand lettering and got new brushpens. But I somehow think that the pens I bought are not actually for handlettering because even thought it has a brush tip. It is very difficult to create thinner strokes on the paper. And it doesnt even give even strokes. Btw I have been using doma brushpens super soft tip. Would you pls guide if these pens are meant for handlettering or not
