Most of what the conductor is there for takes place in the rehearsals. In a lot of cases the orchestra is so good that at the conductor could walk off the stage and the orchestra would pull it off as if he or she were still standing there.
I feel an urge to say that I have mixed feelings about this kind of performances. Not that I find anything wrong with Rudolf Buchbinder. On the contrary, his relationhip with the piano fascinates me but I'm missing here the moving eye contact with the conductor. If members of an orchestra are able to offer us their splendid interpretations while the soloist requires the intense concentration he needs, it seems they don't "need" a conductor. Hopefully, I'm mistaken. Because please, don't misunderstand me. I enjoy this music with all my fiber. Cheers.-
