Hi Michael- Nice shave and shaving product reviews; thank you! It’s nice to see what a regular guy in India might have available to him for a daily shave; it’s nice for perspective. I hope you are having a great holiday weekend and all the best!
Absolutely and we would all likely make do with *at least* the razor and just reach for a cheaper shaving soap and a boar brush, or synthetic if animal products are not an option. All the best to you, it's nice to have a four day week every now and then!
This was my first de razor back in 2008. It was my companion all through my learning curve. We don't get much choices online when it comes to de razors, thankfully parker razors are here, not the worst.
@@mfreedberg i think their most expensive offering is parker variant for around 50 dollars here. Pearl razors are descent as much i have heard of them. But not quite the finish and heft of parkers. Threading of top cap on parkers is horrendous though.

Hello, Michel I am one of your subscribers from INDIA, this razor is easily available over here, I am writing this comment as I found this razor to be a better razor than the most of the expensive razors, recently I purchased Henson Al13 medium aggressive razor but for me this razor is in no way less than Henson Al13 Medium rather gives a better shave, no blade alignment issue, no blade chatter and this feels extremely comfortable too👍👍🙏🙏🙏 make a comparison video of both the razors if possible.
Your description and process with that foam from the can means, you would find this change to be good to try: Use a shave brush! Wet the bristles or soak; squeeze out the water, and squirt some foam into the brush. Start a face-lather, and add water as necessary to build a better lather.
Nice Shave Michael! I absolutely agree your point on the foam as its not slick at all and tends to dry the skin. The Gillette Sterling is the best budget DE razor available here in India. I started DE shaving with this razor and still consider this one as one of my go to razors. One tip I generally use it to apply a layer of pre shave oil on wet face before applying the foam, this step adds the slickness/glide and protection missing in the canned Foams.
Good tip, and you can also try adding a bit more water to the foam if it is too dense, but in the end you are not going to get that good a lather from it. What is your favorite local shaving cream? The Godrej?
I have been using Gillette 7 o'clock sterling safety razor since June, 2005. I like this Razor because it's inexpensive and gives BBS close shave after 3 pass. In other words Best performance at lowest price.😊😊
In June 2005 i am 5 year old 😂. I started shaving back in 2016 and use qshave safety razor but moved to sterling razor just 2 weeks ago great results very cheap and time saving product
Way to “take one for the team” Michael! Canned foam is a serious sacrifice. Can’t get water incorporated into the “heavy” lather. I hope you enjoy your long, holiday weekend. Take care, Zac
Thanks, it wasn't TOO much of a sacrifice :-) You can add water to this lather, and I think you can make it slicker than it starts off, but you will never really get what I would call a *real* slick and protective lather. I had a pretty good long weekend, how about you?
As Mad Eye Moody always said: "Constant vigilance!" Best to be prepared for the days ahead when and if this is it and we all have to make do -- may that day never come!
Wow, you made it through the shave unscathed! When I saw shaving FOAM, I thought sure it was going to be ugly. I was curious about the razor, though. Thanks, Michael! Cheers! -Rob
Great shave Michael. That's one product I don't miss at all since I started wet shaving 5 1/2 years ago and that's shave foam. It has no moisture in it, no slickness, no glide and no cushioning ability to it at all and it often irritated my skin. The Gillette 7 O'clock green label and these blades are amongst my favorites. Oh RazoRock has a new single edge called the Eco which is based upon their hawk only it uses half a DE blade. They are scheduling it to be released after labor day.
I never used this type of shaving cream, and it just feels weird when you touch it. Glad to be using real soaps and brushes :-) I look forward to seeing your review of the Eco!
I got one of these razors sent from Indian. The base plate was not symmetrical and the guard stuck out about 1.5mm more on one side compared to the other. Not sure how much it would have affected the shave as I never used it. Quite disappointed. I also have a made in England 1970's Tech, and a Chinese Gillette. Both hold the blade well-aligned - though needless to say the 1970's Tech is the pick of the bunch.
I used the gillette super blue razor and 100 pack of blades just to try out, and I was pleasantly surprised. Of course you need a little pressure when you use this razor however I didn't get any tugging or irritation. I'm scared that this is going to be my new favourite razor/blade combo for 2020. I'll say it again as I always do, you'll have to pry my vintage carbons from my cold, dead, clean shaven face
Great review, Mike! I actually stood surprised by the 7' O'clock 'pot metal' razor... Loaded with a Nacet, it proved efficient, smooth enough and hey...for 'tuppence less than f**k- all' you get a great little traveller. I bought three and I guess I just got lucky with the one I opened - I can't really fault it for what it is. As for that foam? I think once you've experienced the joy of using even simple soaps and creams, it's hard to go back to a foam or gel. Nothing seems to satisfy in that regard. Park Avenue do a cream, so I might give that a guernsey and see how that fairs.
I know, it's really not a bad razor at all, certainly for the price! They should sell those over here too, and lower the in-store price of DE blades. The foam just feels so wrong, and you are right: even the cheapest shave soap will out-perform this product. I would take Arko over this any day. Let's see how the shave cream fares (at some point in the future!)
I've got the super blu blade version purchased on aliexpress..think is the same form. If used with a very light touch and a sharped platinum blade is veeeery mild on the skin
Nice review Michael, enjoyable as always and informative. Could one not load up a brush and apply with the brush? To avoid all the hand related messiness and get a bit of the brush related fun / skin prep benefits.
I guess you could, but then you are cheating yourself of the entire experience - and that is half the fun! I wonder if this lather would just break down. I may have a go...
Wow! Think I'll pass on the expenditure, thanks for the review. Good shave or was that "save"💈😉 At least the a/s was worth the effort to upload. Missed the brush/bowl, maybe next time😢 Interesting video. Enjoy!
Good "save" -- that was funny! The aftershave is actually quite pleasant, and I am glad I have it. No brush, no face lathering, funny how much I missed that.
I can well imagine, and I hope that a lot of people will continue to use this set of products! I have finished the foam, but still have most of the bottle of the aftershave, as well as a practically unused Godrej shaving round. Good stuff!!
"... and deliver us from evil, amen.." Tell me now that the foam worked well for you..! :-) He could bring at least a Godrej cream or a Trigodon soap! PS Wholly Kaw is somewhere hidden, crying, because of this great competitor he has to win!
To be fair, I did get a close shave, but that's more down to my EXPERT TECHNIQUE :-) That foam kind of works, but cannot really compete with a real shaving soap. Wholly Kaw has literally *nothing* to worry about!!
I am not sure if this is the proper razor for a beginner. It is light, so he might use pressure resulting in a bad experince. I would say this "gillette g1000 colne" could be a travel razor for an experinced de shaver. I am de shaving since 2012 and i always wanted to try one. This blade however was a horrible blade for me.
I think this razor would be fine for a beginner, it is *very* mild and feels very safe on the face. Even if you were to press down a bit, I think you would still be totally fine. Most people learn pretty quickly to ease up after they give themselves a bit of razor burn with whatever razor they start with, so I think this should still be fine. What blades do you find work well for you?
I absolutely do use both edges, just not one right after the other. I really don't like shaving with one side full of lather and stubble, so I use one side, rinse, turn over and use the other side.
Nice constructive review where many would be anticipating foam/less than a dollar razor/cheap aftershave to be slaughtered. As you say ;someone somewhere, that is their daily shave 👍
Review things for what they are, and you can find great shaves in all kinds of places. And yes, for lots of people this is IT for shaving, and they are getting the job done as well.
