I freaking LOVE the Smithsonian.... I just wish I could afford to go and see it for myself... I remember in 1976, the Smithsonian sent around the Freedom Train... I remember that Lincoln's hat, the ruby slippers, Howdy Doody and a reproduction of the Declaration of Independence among lots of other artifacts were in the traveling museum. Thanks much for going there, Jacob!
When I went to the Smithsonian American History Museum in 2004, they had the flag that was draped over the Pentagon on September 12, 2001 hanging on the wall as soon as you walked through the doors. It was high up so you had to look up to see it but it was chilling. You could see a tear or two and there was still soot and grease from the hands of the workers who'd carried it up to the roof and hung it there. Mesmerizing. Brought tears to my eyes. Curators and restoration personnel were also working on THE "Star Spangled Banner", the actual flag Francis Scott Key saw that inspired him to write our national anthem.
When I went to this museum a few years ago, I was amazed at how small people were, say 150 to 200 years ago. You can tell by the military uniforms that some of the men wore. Their bone structure was much smaller. Did you see the waists sizes on the clothing that was born back then? Crazy.
Unrelated, but my dream is to tour and film Baltimore's best and creepiest with you and Dan Bell. I admire what you both do so much, and I'm such a dweeb, so very far away...but yeah! It's one of those dreams that will never come true, but that fuels my passion to both spend a week-long vacation in Baltimore, tour the entire Route 66 on a Caravan, and spend at least 6 months living and breathing Texas, my all-time favorite place in the United Stated (of Amurica).
I visited this museum in 1994 when I was in 8th grade and it was very interesting, one of my favorite places during the trip. I remember seeing some of these like Dorothy's ruby slippers and Archie Bunker's chair. At the time they had a carousel exhibit and one on the first ladies. Not sure if you went to the Natural History museum but that was great too. I'd love to check these museums out again!
I first went there in 8th grade and then again two years ago and the Ruby Slippers are always leave me in awe because The Wizard of Oz is my all time favorite movie.
Thanks Carpetbagger this video and your other videos in Washington DC was very helpful to know what to see during my first trip to DC this past July for my birthday.
This video is just incredible! Isn't it amazing that you are standing right in front of endless objects of history?! WOW! I went to the Smithsonian when I was 10 years and I was in a trance becuase ever since I was a kid I love history so much! Its so fascinating. I remember seeing Abe Lincoln's hat, Edith and Arche's chairs, on and on!
Yeah, they're about 15 - 16 years old. There were more puppets I believe in the exhibit but because of "mechanical" difficulties jerking motions, speech timing was off, etc.) most of them were removed. He was a puppeteer for about 25 years.
This was very interesting! I hope there will come some more episodes from there. I have always dreamed about visiting that museum! Of what I can understand it is enormous. According to wikipedia it houses over 156 million objects! If you watched every item for only one second it would take about five years to see them all!
Loved this museum. Sadly, only had time to see a few of the exhibits. Wanted to make sure I saw the flag that inspired the Star Bangled Banner. Also saw the Ruby Slippers, & an amazing exhibit on the cost of war.
What a wonderful place Jacob. The prize exhibit for me among the treasures has to be Dorothy's ruby slippers. The Wizard of Oz is the greatest film of ALL time for me.
Wonderful video! I went to the Smithsonian in 1986, shortly after they had acquired the set pieces from "All InThe Family" and one of the three pairs of "ruby" slippers used in "The Wizard Of Oz". I saw both of these and I was quite impressed, I must say! I also remember seeing Hoody Doody and Charlie McCarthy and Kermit the Frog! I loved all of it! Don't remember if I saw the Hope Diamond or not-I'd "hope" not! The cursed thing gives people a lot of bad luck, and certainly no "hope"! About that piece of "medical quackery" that was used on President Garfield-I wouldn't call it "quackery". That piece was one of the very first metal detectors, and this one was developed by Alexander Graham Bell to help doctors locate the bullet inside the President. It didn't work only because the President was laying on a bed filled with metal springs which made the gadget go haywire. The President died, not from the bullet wound itself but from the infection that set in later. Once Bell figured out what had gone wrong with the gadget it became invaluable to doctors of the time, helping them to save the lives of many other gunshot victims, up until the invention of X-rays around 1895.
FYI What's shown is not a "carpet bag." From Wikipedia "A carpet bag is a traveling bag made of carpet, commonly from an oriental rug. They were a popular form of luggage in the United States and Europe in the 19th century. Some modern versions serve as handbags or purses."
Greensboro Museum actually have the real sitting counter cuz I went to the Greensboro Museum and it's still there so the one you went over there and the fake one
This one is real, its the four seats they sat in. A couple other bits are in the african american history museum as well. The rest of the counter is still in greensboro.
past presidents items like fishing reel and fishing flies all looked used but that basket ball had no scuffs on it like it was never bounced . New Ball
The metal detector wasn't quackery. It was assembled by Alexander Graham Bell to find the bullet and would have done so successfully if Garfield's incompetent doctor hadn't insisted it was on the wrong side of Garfield's body.

I always wanted to go there, so why not check out youTube, I'm sure someone has made a vid. Found yours, and glad I did. You did a nice job and it made me think. This is not on you at all, but I question the authenticity of some of the displays. There are at least 5 pairs of ruby slippers. That's one of Archie's chairs. The condition of the uniform, not likely to be real. To me,( and just my opinion ) Don't want to drive that far to visit a "Planet Hollywood". It was very helpful.
jacob you're so lucky that you get to go to all these places. I would love to go a road trip someday
I want his job!!!
I Wish This Video Been About HOUR LONG ... YOUR BEST VIDEO YET !!!
Thank you for the tour! It's always been one of my favorite Museums, but I haven't been in years! So nice to see all of the displays!
Definitely a highlight from my first trip to Washington D.C. was this place. I'm a huge museum guy, so this was like paradise to me.

They (the women) also wore corsets
All the chemicals and crap in the food we eat.
Fantastic video, will never be able to see it in person, thanks for letting us see a bit of all the amazing things.
Wow! This museum has a TUN of awesome stuff!

its missing the official carpetbagger suitcase
It's got miles of traveling still to come before it assumes its rightful place at the Smithsonian!
Yeah! But, he aint dead yet! Silly😅

CB... Got my postcard today and loved it. I'm going to do a scrapebook with the postcards. I enjoyed Jesus with the children. Thank you.
At 4:40 - 4:44 those puppets used to be animated and talked....my fiance spent the night there doing the voiceover for them....
+C Stokes that's amazing
Your poor fiancee! All that work for nothing~!
Yeah, they're about 15 - 16 years old. There were more puppets I believe in the exhibit but because of "mechanical" difficulties jerking motions, speech timing was off, etc.) most of them were removed. He was a puppeteer for about 25 years.
He sounds like a keeper!
Mel Campbell Sure is considering that was his side job.....he’s a fifth degree black belt and teaches kids Tae Kwon Do to kids and adults now.....👍🏼
I love that museum! I have friends there, I will send them your video. I know they love to get feedback from visitors, and you did a great job.

What's that at 1:50 that made you laugh?
Seconded; I'm utterly flummoxed.

amethystducky Your mom
He had made fun of quilts at a quilt museum and they got mad. So seeing a giant quilt display is funny.

Where's all the bones of the giants they've confiscated over the years?

I'm sure Pres. Lincoln had more than one top hat throughout his life!
If you like Wizard of oz artifacts, check out the Wizard of Oz Museum in Wamego Kansas

-Technically, the lightbulb was patented by Thomas Edison. He pretty much stole a lot of other people's work.-
Thomas eddison is not the inventor of the light bulb ;-)

How could one fight fire in a metal hat w/o one's brain melting down? Imagine how unbearably hot that must've been!
