It's just like the random chance that your pokemon card will grade a 10 pulled fresh from a booster pack because most of the time the cut of the card and centering will create a difference between perfection and near perfection. With Funko pops, it's the random chance that the figure was shipped without a dent being put in your box. (I'm kidding of course.)
I’m not an expert on funko pops but they seem pretty clearly to me to be designed to remain in the box. It’s actually a rather clever piece of packaging design. The boxes are strong enough to be able to stacked on top of each other but with a nice big display window that it can be seen quite well in the box from many different angles. In vintage toys that’s almost never seen. I don’t know enough to say that funko pops pioneered it but they’ve definitely capitalized on it.
I can't believe the reserved investments cinematic universe is expanding with the 1 AM rant spin off series. Usually I'm not a fan of spin offs but I love these videos!
Good points about what Harry Rinker said. Also noticed when I went to his website he says he is going to be semi-retired. Too bad because I think a lot of these pop collectible markets are going to start to really slow down and Rinker would have kept things in focus. Looks like Shawn will have to pick up the torch from Harry Rinker to keep us informed.
I appreciate the video. Keep'em coming. I'm slowly starting to lose interest in investing outside of stocks, and this just reaffirms my actions. In a Capatalist society the stockholders are the most important.
What's your take on C.A.S. (Collector's Archive Services)? I use the, moreso because their prices to grade are cheaper than AFA & the sold to prices appear to be at parity with AFA? Also, what's your take on (one day) a third-party grading for records?
Did you read Seth abramsons amazing response in the Pat’s wata video comments?? You say pat did an amazing job but Seth takes his analysis apart pretty severely. You do a good job of analyzing the video game market objectively stop aligning yourself with pat and his biased views on the subject
Awesome channel full of classic catchphrases ie "Kimmy's Timmys, and Poindexter Juniors." & "Hit in the face with a stale donut" lol. Thanks for all the level headed financial advice and real world perspectives on the collectibles market.
Looking forward to seeing that video about consolidation in the collectibles market in the nineties. I was in primary school and high school all through the nineties and had minimal awareness of what was going on in the collectibles markets at that time. Given that history repeats it would be good to understand how it fell apart back then.
Hey Shawn. Regarding pumping a market and fiduciary duty, might be worth doing a video on the Stanley Gibbons Stamp market pump and why it popped in 2016-2017
You have made mention several times of lack of government oversight in these markets. Isnt that the beauty of it? Personally I subscribe to the theory that, “a fool and their money will soon be parted”. Keep up the great content. Its nice to hear an unbiased voice.
How many of the fools have been misled by other people? Recognizing that the fools are naive or desperate for money should not justify the behavior of people who are taking advantage of the fools.
I’ll double down with my stance. Those Kimmys, Timmy’s and Pointdexters who thought they can get rich without doing their due diligence is on them. These, “victims” are indeed fools.
This has been the most important TH-cam channel for me ever, it made me look at my collection with a diferent perspective and with a knowledge i didnt have before. Thanks you is all i can say
Yea prices are dropping in the graded video games market but Pat was comparing different variants and different grades. He didn't compare much of the same variant same grade.
I totally agree grading funko pops are ridiculous, I collect pops as a hobby nothing more or less. I'm an out of box collector, don't care if a ceral box adds value to them. They are everywhere, alot of funko Collectors brag I got a 50,000 collection. Well that value will drop. I just collect for fun.
It's funny how many people mistake things they don't want to hear as "negative". Finance is a lot like math. It just the facts. Perhaps if a person doesn't like what they are hearing they need to reevaluate? Good discussion Shawn! 👍🏻
Could you do a video on the current trading card market. I saw you did a video on vintage marvel cards but I’d really like to hear your opinion on current trading cards. Sports and non-sports.
Great video shawn, as always rly on point! I have to honestly admit that i dont even feel bad anymore if i profit of a timmy on a regular base if i see them doing the same mistakes over and over again. Right now all the economic FUD helps me to get good prices on established and less speculative investments. I am excited to see how far the china bust takes down everything as a whole. Great opportunity to get discounts on bluechips!
The graded video game scene is experiencing what is happening to real estate right now and it hasn't even begun to crash as those population reports get updated.
@@alex12104 Pat the NES Punk has a point in his recent WATA games video from about a week or two ago. These graded games are crashing in price and Pat is right to say that people are scared to bring out the Super Mario 64 games because they will crash.
These are wonderful videos. People are going to believe what they want, they ignore facts because they can’t grow & admit they made a mistake. People throw so much money away because they refuse to get educated. They spend more time looking over a menu at a restaurant than getting smart about these alternate investments.
And to be blunt, you could start grading beanie babies... There is plenty of holders who would pay the money to get the seal of approval on their items.
Wasn't that part of the whole WATA scandal? That they were intentionally not grading games or intentionally taking way too long to grade them so the high grade copies they already had they could push at certain auctions to get max value ?
Squishmallows=new beanie babies Funko pop= branded beanie babies True game collectors who didnt care about money are priced out. The collectors that are left turned into dealers
It may sound rough, but I just gotta say there's going to be more great fools than greater fools. If it isn't already happening subtly, it will happen strongly, and most likely sooner than later.
I think you over-estimate the vintage coin market. Few people track coin sales on auction sites nowadays. Coins reminds me of stamps, like no one collects stamps nowadays. More people are tracking old baseball cards and old comic books than coins or stamps on auction sites. I do agree that video games, funkos, pokemons are just a fad though, much like beanie babies. I also agree that stocks and real estate are still the best. Just my opinion. Just remember, superheroes will be around forever, coins like stamps could go extinct (e.g. digital payments for everything)
@@ReservedInvestments for sure and appreciate those concepts. Do you think the crypto winter that has sunk the value of most NFTs is indicative of where the overall economy is at (and crypto) or is this market finally correcting?
i hope i can get a response from you mr.shawn , the following comments are solely my perspective and not factual but strictly based on my observations , for a guy who talks alot about how to treat this like a financial market you sure do fail to mention how the guys who invested in sealed games 2-5 years back selling at the peak or even now which you consider to be a 'crash' they are still up folds(x) up from when they bought , now moving froward the vhs market is on a steady uptrend , if your gonna talk about the bad or the 'negative' as you would say you should shed some light on the good as well , look forward to hearing from you
It seems like CGC is being too ambitious. They can't possibly create 3 new grading services at once. They are probably doing pop because of psa. Psa encapsulates signed funko pops so for them it makes sense they would go to grading .
I’m surprised you thought Pat did a great rant. He made several factual errors and Ian had even correct him. Seth put a comment on it, even, explaining much of the nuance Pat consistently neglects to include in his “analyses.” Anyway, I love me a 1AM video, good stuff otherwise!
I think what he liked is the price comparison about how much some game have lost value. Quite frankly, i doubt he agrees with everything, Pat made some obvious mistakes analyzing the data, it's a market he clearly hates.
This doesn’t change the fact that the pro-WATA fan boys are getting burned badly in a market they know nothing about. It does not surprise, however, that you have this take. The numbers and facts don’t lie.
As always, a nice video with good advice. I don't agree 100% with your take of Pat's video though... he shows some good data, but he is totally bias against graded videogames as a hobby (not as an investment) from the very beginning, and it shows. One thing is to know its speculative and very volatile, and another to clap because the high end market is down, using a few examples. Ian seemed more level headed and even corrected pat on some points. The hobby is there and its not going to dissapear.
I'll start with funko pops are artistic cancer. The lack of anything of any unique to them yuk. Shawn is 100 percent right about the beanie babies analogy. You can be offended or you can step back and view the greater picture cause they are going in a land fill. As they have no value. Like actual other than nostalgia to kids in 20 years maybe but they are cheap looking. To each his or her own I guess I'll take Todd's sculpts anyway over the minion wannabes . Finally I believe you are right that Pat's video is worth watching pat is usually very thorough. I have stated my feelings on pat before.
