I turned 39 this year. I miss going to our mall looking for games (King's Plaza in Brooklyn NY), and our monthly trips to outlet malls in NJ and upstate NY. KB Toys & Electronics Boutique were my favorite stores and I miss them greatly. I own a geek games/toys/collectibles shop in Scarsdale NY and foot traffic and local support has been incredible with kids 20+years younger than me coming in the store with their jaws on the floor at seeing what a store like that could be. I sell CDs and VHS tapes to 20 year olds, action figures to 12 year olds and Pokemon cards to 40 year olds. It's wild seeing how society has shifted. Thanks for sharing your story, I still remember the day I came home with the PS1 shortly after seeing FF7 on launch at a friend's house. Or bringing back Baldurs Gate 1, reading the book sized manual on the bus ride home marking it up with notes on how to spec my character when I got home. Happy New Year & Happy Birthday. Cheers.
There was something to be said for back when something came on tv that was your chance to watch it. You couldn’t stream it later, let alone binge it. Being able to watch series in order as an adult is a dream
I think we long for the past more today because we’ve been led to believe the future will be worse than today. Whereas our parents and grandparents grew up during the prime NASA and Star Trek years and truly believed society was headed that direction.
Shawn, thank you for this video. I share your sentiments. I was born in the early 80s and have such fond memories of going to the mall with friends/family. My wife and I love going to KOP as well! Happy Holidays to you and your family!
Slightly older than you Gen X here and I smiled and nodded through this whole video. Also a December baby. I've seen NIN in concert 4 times. One of the best ones was when they co-headlined with David Bowie. I remember going to the arcade or even a trip to the really big record store was a valid choice for a date or a friend's night out. Toy R Us was always the place to be.
For me it was going into Toys R Us and taking that paper ticket for video games to the register. And sometimes being disappointed that the game you wanted is sold out - that was part of the fun!
I like both physical and digital. I have a decent chunk of my Star Wars collectables (officially licensed) as digital collectables. I don’t care what the value does but I like the aspect of no wear and tear, no storage/ display space, no insurance and each item has a mint number. Also with a greener more sustainable world being pushed in the very long term I don’t know how we can continue creating all these physical items with plastic and cardboard. People are downsizing home size just to be able to afford a place so room for these physical items will be harder to justify. I’ll keep my hand in both markets and I appreciate both markets.
As an elder millennial I also miss malls and the excitement they garnered in the 80's and 90's, there was something for everyone to enjoy when going. Unfortunately mall landlords are greedy: it's a big obstacle and for a video game store which is competing with discount retailers, online, and eshops. At least there are retro stores (usually in cheaper locations), which are great to explore.
As a Baby Boomer (72) I miss the 90's ! The malls, strip centers, and stand alone brick and mortar stores as well. Your trip down memory lane reminded me of the experiences I had in MEDIA PLAY here in Rochester, N.Y. and all the books, movies, and especially action figures they carried. Next to TOYS R US they were my favorite store ! Thanks for the nostalgia. That's exactly what drives my obsession in collecting. Glad to hear that younger generations are still experiencing hands on shopping. I spend my days online searching out the items from distributors instead of driving around from store to store and facing one disappointment after another. That's not to say that I don't miss the thrill of THE HUNT ! It's just less hassle to track it down online. I do give BBTS and Entertainment Earth kudos for delivering undamaged products and sometimes double boxing items to ensure collector quality. Great job, and HAPPY NEW YEAR !
18:52 duuuuuude cant believe i jokingly guessed Dreamcast!😂 Getting and playing Sonic Adventure with that new console was LIFE CHANGING. Great video and happy birthday Shaun!
Geriatric Gen Z’er here, I love your channel, especially the general rants. Wishing you all the best in the new year and know there are still some of us pushing for physical!
I'm 50 years old & still rock out to NIN, Cure & hell even Bon Jovi 😂 I hope people around our age really enjoyed visiting great shopping places like Toys "R" Us, K-Mart, Circuit City. If I could bring back one Nostalgic place it be Chucky E. Chesses, I grow up in that fun place so many birthdays & items I won there makes me cry not seeing it again. Happy late birthday & have Happy New Year Shawn🎉
Thank you, Shawn, for all the informative videos you made in 2024. I know it's not always pleasant to read some of the feedback one receives, but please know you are creating the right video content at a time when many people need guidance. May you have a prosperous 2025 and hope you had/have a great birthday!
Money and items aren't shit without the memories. I was never mall rat but I always loved hanging out in public. Attention, goofing, bonding, lots of activity and good memories checking out music, games, clothes, thrifts, food, whatever. A small nuisance we should welcome back. And I also think arcades and social zones should return :)
I bought my PS5 from Best Buy. I had to go to the customer service desk and ask to purchase it. They rang it up while someone else went into the back to get it. They wouldn't let me touch it until I had completed the purchase. It's clear that these big stores are having severe issues with theft.
I'm from '78. I think I have never been happier than when I was playing Phantasy Star on my Master System. I made maps of all the dungeons, because, well, no internet. Not a care in the world, no responsabilities. What a glorious time indeed. I get nostalgia. Keep doing what you love to do in 2025 Shawn.
I remember all of the Sega Dreamcast In my area we’re sold out for a couple years during that time & seeing younger people go back to malls and playing arcade games sounds like something that would be in a Simpson’s episode if not already
As a father, I’m sad that I can’t take my child to the toystores, arcades, bookstores, record stores, etc of the 80s-90s. Heck, can’t even get a comic book at a 7-11 or supermarket. I think corporate greed outgrew the profits not the public outgrew the physical media.
I didn't go to the mall much as a kid, and most of my nostalgia is going to the beach and collecting seashells. Thankfully, the ocean hasn't discontinued shells yet, so I can still go there occasionally to get that feeling
Well, here I thought I was the only one. One of my favorite videos thus far Shawn! We are losing something in this digital age that will never show on the balance sheet till it's too late. Happy Holidays and New Year! Hope to connect with you in 2025!
Seeing the Toys R' Us X-Mas commercial, you know it's that special time of year.. and running past the bmx bikes to your favorite toy aisle, with perpetual stacks of toys reaching the ceiling 🥴
As someone who has been playing through emio. It's a fantastic time! I've been playing it one chapter at a time one a week treating it like a TV show which has made the experience even better (in my opinion).
Me and my gf are millennials, we love walking and shopping around the mall. Online shopping is lame. You save time and a couple of bucks but you lose out on the experience. Yolo ✌️
I've been making it a point over the past two years or so to do as much as I can in person. Going to stores instead of buying online is very high on that list. I've definitely noticed the amount of other people I see at malls and stores to be ticking up consistently. I was just at the mall yesterday. Plenty of people including teenagers. Not quite back to 80's and 90's level. But that particular mall still has some vacant storefronts. If this trend continues I can definitely imagine going back to that same mall in two years and seeing zero empty storefronts and the whole mall being packed. Not there yet. But absolutely a possibility.
Happy Birthday! The future will be won by the companies who ride out this digital-only wave. Already, Barnes and Noble is learning how to adapt and expand to fill the gaps left by the Amazon algorithm. Anecdotally, this Christmas I noticed much better inventory levels in my local JC Penney and Belk stores.
We definitely need more physical locations to go to (and reasons to go there) instead of spending our lives on screens. There's really is something important missing when all you do is shop online.
back then not all stores had the same stuff, so you had to go to multiple stores, unlike today where every store has the same stuff especially video games. But then theres now alot of defunct stores that use to exist back then where you had more options...kmart, venture (etc thats just the ones by me) now you only have like target and walmart or just walmart if your lucky.
I have a mall still open by me too and I want to take the younger kids there as well I like stopping there cause some good stores are still in there PLUS they did do just that put a arcade in at the front by the food court (where it use to be 20+ yrs ago, not same exact spot) and people were actually in there.
I went to the mall and tried. It was to packed. Parking lot was full. Store had more customers the employees and they didn't have the shoes I wanted. Had to leave and order online. Mall near me is like the malls were. I know I'm lucky some malls went out of business. I have a arcade 30 minutes from me. Only $6 all you can play. Like you said I think kids are living more and want we had. It's fun.
Software etc was such a great store. So many titles in one place. I still prefer brick and mortar stores. Online and its AI generated offerings is annoying. Reminds me of a twilight zone episode Walking Distance. We all want to go back to simpler times. That’s a part of getting old and the nostalgia of it all. The 1980’s and 90’s was the golden age. 2001 was the beginning of the end.
Great content as always. Reflecting on 2024, and mid to late 2023, I was ROASTED in the comment section for saying Pokemon and specifically modern Pokemon were attractive long-term collectible categories with how strong Pokemon's IP was. Everyone discounted modern pokemon as mass produced, horrible store of value etc... who's laughing now.. it's probably one of the best performing collectibles in 2024. I have around 30 sealed cases from SWSH and 250+ PSA 10 Alt Arts, everything has exploded in value. If you're talking shopping malls for Gen X - pokemon is THE nostalgia for millennial's like myself who now have "adult" money to spend. Kids under 10 to adults in their 50's collect, that's a powerful thing for longevity with worlds most valuable IP. The ability to get even recent Scarlet and Violet sets direct from my distributor has also dried up.
And now Gamestop is leaving Germany closing all there locations over here. No Gamestop shops are left in Europe except some in France. They failed here really hard.
theres nothing wrong sharing these experiences with younger people, but alot of people who hype and fomo about this in a nostalgia sense do it because its their job and they have a HUGE back room investment in video games or toys or whatever that they in turn resell to their "viewers". Nostalgia is as bad as a drug for some and it shows by how much people are spending on this stuff. Can you imagine having $30,000 worth of video games sitting on a shelf instead of $30,000 sitting in the bank? Then you need that money to pay bills and sell your "$30,000 collection for $12,000 cash cause you need that money asap" and thusly you lose $18,000 on nostalgia/addiction collecting? Happens all the time and it serves no benefit for the collectors but serves MAJOR BENEFIT for the resellers who make the money "coming and going" rebuying and selling this stuff cause of "nostalgia" This is a big issue in the gaming community as of now. Telling everyone out there to be smart, enjoy, have nostalgia and remember the past but dont get lost in the past. Have self control, just say NO and you DO NOT have to buy everything you see in sight cause you have 'nostalgia' for it. Sometimes just seeing it and holding it makes all the difference.
This was way more than I expected. Two minutes in and I feel like I took acid. Enya? Nin? The eb neon glow? If you start talking about listening to enigma with your older male friend who taught you "magic" at the boy scout Hall then we might be twins 😂😉 Man I remember sitting at the mall bar on break from Sears shipping and cougs would send me drinks with their number. I've said this for a while and this ain't the channel to say it on but im saying it anyways. Ain't any women alive these days that are anywhere near as sexy as they were pre 2000. I'm still out here don't get me wrong but the quantity has gone up but quality has plummeted. Now let me make a drink for the rest of this video. I feel high off memories of muzak now.
I enjoy walking down memory lane, but it kinda bums me out you didn't get nostalgic about Toys R Us. That was where my video game love really developed. Those other stores in the malls were great, but were always overpriced compared to TRU, probably because of the mall rent I guess. Wish I had love for Best Buy, but about a decade ago (wow time flies!) they wouldn't honor coupons on two different occasions that were still valid for 2 more days. Called corporate and they basically told us to kick rocks. Never again after being treated that way. Enjoyed going there to look at video equipment in the past too, oh well!
yes it appears that The Switch 2 and Evercade will be the last video game consoles that have physical media if Microsoft and Sony go all digital in the next generation and I would like to see you do another video on the future of video game collecting if this happens also considering if a game gets delisted digitally and not re released and the only way to own it is through the physical copy that was released :)
F*ck sake I'm 30 and I could probably pass for your Dad. 😂 Thanks for all the advice this year Shawn.
😂
Thanks for sharing your trip of memory lane.
I'm with you Shawn! I miss those days so much. I'm 45 and I also have these fond memories.
I turned 39 this year. I miss going to our mall looking for games (King's Plaza in Brooklyn NY), and our monthly trips to outlet malls in NJ and upstate NY. I think the widening wealth gap makes it both harder to establish a small storefront, and harder for us to afford anything but online prices.
Happy belated birthday dude! You saved me from making stupid investing choices.
Thank you!
Nostalgia is a hell of a thing

Shawn, Ive seen NIN like 15 times. One of the best bands to watch live.
💯

Enya! She's the best, I love it, great video.
TGIF was pure gold

I went to the mall this Xmas just for nostalgia. And because we don’t know when it will be the last chance to do so.
As someone who has been playing through emio. It's a fantastic time! I've been playing it one chapter at a time one a week treating it like a TV show which has made the experience even better (in my opinion).
90's was the tippy top of pop culture, its all been downhill from there with a few minor hills on the way down
Me and my gf are millennials, we love walking and shopping around the mall. Online shopping is lame. You save time and a couple of bucks but you lose out on the experience. Yolo ✌️
Simon mall near me has 3-4x the people it did 10 years ago and is back from (what seemed like) the grave. Good luck in 2025

Great video Shawn to bring 2024 to a close ... Looking forward to your 2025 content! I agree 100% with you keep physical media alive!!!
I never heard of electronics boutique. However, we had Radio Shack.
We definitely need more physical locations to go to (and reasons to go there) instead of spending our lives on screens. There's really is something important missing when all you do is shop online.

I saw a video of someone shopping in Japan where they still have tons of variety. Made me feel nostalgic even though I've never been to Japan.
With ya on this one pal. I used to work at Software Etc.!
Miss the old days.

We are birthday brothers
Shawn, quick question..........Longenberger?
Still in production h*ll…lol.
@@ReservedInvestments I cant wait to see it
80s and 90s was the peak of USA, we are on a rollercoaster ride down in decline. thanks globalism
You're not wrong. Social media and the internet's hold have definitely changed the pop culture landscape that's for sure.
i hope you have a healthy and prosperous 2025
Thank you!
Show your game collection I know you got some heaters
I get death threats just by showing parts of my paper money collection. lol.

Society is pushing back on the Internet because some experiences aren't virtualized well
Successes… Pokémon videos
This was way more than I expected.

Mallrats good movie lol
That was shot at Exton Square Mall, another mall about 30 minutes from me. Sadly, it’s a dead mall now…
To look younger I also try to apply skincare to my neck, it will give away your real age right away
